In writing my last few posts, I have realized that there is quite a lot of basic(to me) knowledge required to understand most of this stuff. I've done my best to explain as I go, but I think this deserves its own post. So, here we go!

Junior Gemology 101

This post is mostly about diamonds! I am well aware it's called Junior Gemology, but 90% of what I deal with on a day-to-day basis is diamonds. Also, a lot of this applies to coloured stones too, so no need to repeat myself.

What is a diamond, actually?

Diamonds are carbon! That's all there is! Except for inclusions. And coloured diamonds. Those have little bits of other materials in them. And are also a topic for later. I digress. Like always.

Specifically, diamonds are carbon atoms bonded together covalently in a tetrahedral shape. Confusing enough yet? This means that each carbon atom is bonded to 4 other carbon atoms. It's ok if you don't get it, I spent about 3 hours trying to understand diamond structure before things started to make sense. This website has a 3D model of the tetrahedral structure seen in diamonds and is what I used to finally wrap my head around it. The important part is: diamonds are made of carbon atoms connected in a pattern. If the pattern was different, It wouldn't be a diamond! If the carbon was bonded in hexagonal rings, it would be graphite! Same atoms, veeeerrrryyy different result.

What makes diamonds so darn special?

I've told you what a diamond is - so why do people care about this very specific pattern of carbon? The answer is(mostly) that humanity LOVES shiny things, and diamonds are great at being shiny. Why have diamonds become THE shiny thing to have? A combination of some REALLY successful marketing campaigns and some of diamond's unique characteristics. These characteristics include things such as their hardness, brilliance, and fire. I went deeper into these characteristics and what they mean in terms of telling diamonds from other stones in this post, but I'll give you a quick run-down here.

Diamonds are very(and famously) hard. They're a 10 on the Mohs scale, and almost nothing is harder than them. This doesn't mean diamonds are impervious to damage - while they are very hard, diamonds can also be brittle, and a hard smack in the wrong place can chip, crack, or even shatter a diamond. Trust me, I know. I've broken a few by accident.

Brilliance and fire are what give diamonds their characteristic bling. Though they are classified as different things - brilliance being the bright white reflections of light and fire being the rainbow reflections - they're both caused by diamond's Refractive Index. Refractive index(RI) is the measurement of the speed at which light travels through different materials - for our purposes though, think of it as how much a ray of light bends when it moves from one material to another. Diamonds have an RI of 2.42, which causes high brilliance and a medium amount of fire. RI isn't super important for most people to know - it really only comes into the conversation when comparing diamonds to simulant materials.

What are the 4 Cs?

The 4 Cs are the meat and potatoes of diamond basics - Carat weight, Colour, Clarity, and Cut. These four terms are used to describe diamonds worldwide, each describing a different part of a diamond's look.

Carat weight is the weight of a diamond. Pretty self-explanatory. What's not clear is what a carat actually is - no, not a carrot. A carat. A carat is 0.2 grams. Therefore, a 5 carat diamond(good lord) would weigh 1 gram. With me? Why do we weigh diamonds in carats instead of grams like sane people? Because way back yonder, carob seeds were used as a counterweight to weigh diamonds, and language did what language does.

Colour refers to - you guessed it - the colour of the diamond. There are two basic systems that GIA(The Gemological Institute Of America, and the accepted authority of these things in North America) use; the normal colour range and the coloured or fancy diamond range. The normal colour range is used for stones that are colourless, light yellow, or light brown. These are the most common colours of diamond, thus the "normal" colour range. These stones are graded alphabetically D-Z, with D being colourless and Z being quite noticeably yellow or brown. Normal range colour grades are sorted into 5 groups based on the general amount of colour; colourless(DEF), nearly colourless(GHIJ), Faint(KLM), Very Light(N-R), and light(S-Z).

Stones that fall outside this range (stones that are too yellow or brown for the scale or show any colour other than yellow and brown) are graded using the fancy colour grades. Fancy colour grades are an entire thing, but generally pretty self-explanatory. The grade will include 1 or two colours(the more dominant of which goes last) and an intensity descriptor such as light, intense, fancy deep, etc. For example, a stone may be graded as a fancy greyish blue - this means that the stone has a middling amount of colour and is blue with a hint of grey. Easy peasy.

Clarity is how many inclusions are in a stone. Well, technically it's more complicated than that, accounting for placement and contrast and type of inclusion etc etc etc. Really, clarity is how many inclusions you see in a stone. Inclusions are things in the diamond that are not diamond, such as included crystals, or imperfections in the diamond itself, such as cracks(called feathers) or chips.

Clarity grades are, frankly, confusing as fuck. There are 11 grades, broken down into 6 grade groups. From highest to lowest, they are; Flawless, Internally Flawless, Very Very Slightly Included(VVS), Very Slightly Included(VS), Slightly Included(SI), and Included(I). VVS, VS, and SI are each broken into 2 grades - 1 and 2. I is broken down into 3 grades - 1, 2, and 3. The lower the number within a grade, the better the grade - a VS1 stone would be less visibly included than a VS2. You know what'll help? Visuals!!

The diamond on the left is graded as a VVS2 - the red arrow points to the inclusion that gave it this grade. The diamond on the right is graded as an I2. No red arrows are required - this stone has many highly visible inclusions. If you want a little more info (and examples) of clarity grades, GIA has a lovely little tool that explains it quite well.

Cut refers to the shape of a diamond - specifically, the combination of shape(face-up outline) and cutting style(the arrangement of the facets). A classic round brilliant is what most people think of when they think of a diamond, but there are dozens of different cuts. When talking about cut grade, cut refers to how well executed the cut is. Are the proportions ideal? Is everything symmetrical? Is the polish well done? These determine the cut grade of the stone. Cut grades are as follows, best to worst; Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor.

What are the parts of a cut diamond?

Specifically, the parts of a round brilliant diamond. Round brilliant is the name of the most common cut of diamond. Think of a diamond. Is it round? That's almost definitely a round brilliant. Think I've said round brilliant enough? Round brilliant. Whew. Done with that now. This is best explained with diagrams.

The parts we're most interested in are the table, crown, girdle, and pavilion. The way those 3 parts are shaped and proportioned has a huge effect on the looks and value of a diamond.

Knowledge Check

Let's say you're looking at a 1.01 carat round brilliant diamond - it has a colour grade of F, a clarity grade of SI1, and an excellent cut grade. So, what does this mean to you?

Round brilliant is the cut of the diamond. It has a round outline and a brilliant cutting style. 1.01ct is a fairly large diamond - this one in particular is 6.42 mm in diameter (that's a quarter inch!). This stone is colourless - F is the lowest colour grade in the colourless range, but it is still classified as colourless. The diamond will either have one large or several small inclusions that are easy to see under 10x magnification, but hard or impossible to see while looking through the table of a stone with the naked eye(they may be visible through the pavilion with the naked eye). The diamond will be very well cut - the best cut grade possible, in fact! There will be no visible variation in the girdle outline, and all the facets will be well-placed and symmetrical.

It's up to you to decide if this stone matches your criteria - is SI1 a good enough cut grade for you? Is 1.01ct the right size? How "good" a stone is depends on what you want - there will always be bigger, clearer, more colourless diamonds on the market. What makes a stone "good" is if it's the right fit for you. Another stone may be better quality, but if it's out of your price range, then it's not a good stone for you.

In Conclusion

So, you made it this far! Congrats! Hopefully, I haven't bored you too much. We've really just scratched the surface - this was enough information to give you a good idea of what's going on and allow you to navigate the mysticisms of those strange numbers and letters you see associated with diamonds. Kinda annoyed with the assumption that all socialists are just economically illiterate dumdums who would realize the error of their ways if they'd just take an Econ 101 class. Well I have taken introductory econ classes. I've taken multiple econ classes. The university I went to has one of the top 10 economics programs in the US. I originally went into college wanting to be an econ major before I switched to CS. I got to the point of taking one upper division class right before we started getting into the calculus.

The problem with how economics is taught in school is that it takes an approach of capitalist realism that taints their interpretation of everything. Everything that supports the ends of capitalism is assumed to be good. Everything that doesn't maximize efficiency is assumed to be bad. Anyone who advocates for something that has been shown not to maximize efficiency is a big dumdum who doesn't understand economics. There is no question or discussion about whether maximizing efficiency is something we always want in every case.

We got taught that price floors and price ceilings and taxes and regulations cause deadweight loss. Deadweight loss is bad for maximizing efficiency. All those politicians who want rent control and minimum wage and increasing taxes on the 1% are big dumdums who don't understand basic economics. Are there any trade-offs where it's worth it to increase deadweight loss for some other benefit? Not considered.

I do remember getting taught that monopolies are bad. Monopolies also cause deadweight loss. Notably, it is incredibly hard to be a billionaire without being the CEO of a monopoly. Billionaires are causing deadweight loss. Any politician who's against trust busting is an economically illiterate dumdum. If you don't have a problem with billionaires then you hate the basic principles of capitalist competition. (Or alternatively you're an economically illiterate dumdum.)

There are many forms of economic efficiency, but the only one I was taught in school was Pareto efficiency. None of my professors mentioned any other variant. Pareto efficiency was treated as a law of the universe. It's just a theory by some guy. He made some pretty math equations that work under idealized conditions. What if he's wrong? What about all the other models that think he's wrong? What if he's right but he didn't consider things like institutions of oppression? (19th century white Parisian nobility are well known for taking into account how racism, sexism, classism, etc affect society.)

I think the order of classes is suspicious too. First you get simplified microeconomics then simplified macroeconomics then increase the math of each while still being simplified, all before talking about where real life capitalist countries are failing at approaching the idealized model. By that time, the capitalist realism has already set in. We should get to the differences between the graphs and the reality by the third class bare minimum. Perfect competition isn't possible. It's a utopia. Does that actually mean that we should be trying to get closer to it? What sort of trade-offs should we consider when we're departing from perfect competition? We never discussed it.

To the extent of my knowledge, my university never had a class on idealized socialism or communism or any other economic model but focuses entirely on idealized capitalism until upper division classes. The only classes that acknowledge socialism exists compares existing capitalist countries to existing socialist countries. By then, you've already drank the Kool aid of how capitalism could be at its best and it turns out theoretical capitalism is more attractive than existing totalitarian dictatorships. What would a socialist democracy look like? They never bother to ask.

You can't compare and contrast something you don't know anything about. It's all capitalist realism. Anyone who hasn't taken a Socialist Economics 101 class where they draw the simplified graphs and they explain the concepts is an economically illiterate dumdum too.

Another dawless jam that I recorded on video. I think from now on, when I edit the videos to post online I’ll also try to rip the audio so I can upload both. That way people have an option to either just listen to the jam or watch it.

I also would like to see if I can actually stream. I set up a twitch account, and now that I’ve got my spouse’s old laptop set up as the streaming/recording computer in the studio (my spouse and I got our laptops at the same time, but mine was the top-of-the-cheap-models and my spouse’s was top-of-the-midrange-models, so even though it’s equally out of date, it’s a bit more powerful.) I can at least record with OBS, I may be able to stream too. The only way to find out is to try.

For this one, I decided to go without percussion, and just record a couple of bass and chord lines on the Novation Circuit Tracks, then play and improvise along with them. I went simple, no instrument doubling for this one. Just the Circuit playing its two loops, and me playing the MS-1, Crave, and CS Reface on the fly, with me recording a loop or two for the Circuit to trigger the Crave in there.

I know a lot of people out there look down on some of these cheaper synths, but for someone who can’t afford a classic Roland SH-101, a classic Yamaha CS or a modern Moog Mother 32, these knockoffs do what I need them to. They let me make music.

Exploring Creativity: Assignment 2.2

After reading about the Four C model theory on creativity, I learned that James C. Kaufman and Ronald A. Beghetto are trying to establish a measurable science behind creativity by categorizing how individuals fit in situational and relative-based models of thinking. While creativity can be defined differently in each scholarly discipline, my takeaway is that creativity is a unique perspective on a situation or concept.

The unique perspective on situations and concepts lies behind education and experiences. Creativity is shown in various ways, yes, categorically based. I believe that education is the conduit for developing an outside-of-the-box mindset, leading to the invention of expression. There is not a one size fits all education model that makes a creative thinker/doer.

According to the C model theory, our levels of creativity can continually expand and grow with our education levels and experiences. The growth mindset of creativity is one of the most enduring attributes of creative invention. Creativity is ever-evolving, and there is no limit to education or imaginative effort.

╚ He represented Hanahreum Company and left the show to undergo a surgery for a serious injury (he was treated for three weeks) making him land on the 59th spot

╚ After the show, Taemin debuted as an actor. So far, he has 1 Drama entitled, Sunny As Well (2018) and 1 Film entitled Whisper (2018)

Park Woodam, Woo Jinyoung, Jeong Woncheol, Jo Yonggeun

╚ They represented HF Music (Happy Face Music). Woodam placed 35th, Jinyoung at 40th, Woncheol at 95th and Yonggeun at 93rd

╚ Woodam was known for his high notes and he is the brother of SISTAR member, Soyou. Jinyoung amazed the national producers with his performance of SMTM's I Am Not What You Think where his nickname "Woo Jinyoung micheotji" (Woo Jinyoung is crazy) came from.

╚ After the show, Woodam, Jinyoung and Yonggeun joined another survival show, MIX NINE. Woodam didn't made it to the cut, Yonggeun was eliminated in the 3rd round and Jinyoung actually WON the show, he was in the 1st place set to debut in YG's new group. UNFORTUNATELY, YG and other companies disagreed with the new contract YG set (As far as I know, YG changed the contract saying the winning members of MIX NINE should promote for THREE YEARS which is very impossible for a SURVIVAL SHOW group since they came from different entertainments). This misunderstanding made HF Music file a lawsuit against YG Entertainment (and up until now, there's no result yet). Like, guys Jinyoung BEGGED YG for another chance during MIX NINE cause he is so determined to debut. He did well during the show and got the 1st place but YG suddenly fucked up. (Sorry, I'm just mad at YG for not letting MIX NINE debut)

Tesla needs a perfect year. That won't be easy

But in order to justify its sky-high stock price, the automaker will need to overcome a growing list of challenges.

What’s happening: A global chip shortage is snarling production, while the business environment in China, a crucial market, remains fraught. Competitors are gaining ground and Tesla faces a safety investigation tied to a fatal crash in Texas.

Shares are down 2% in premarket trading.

Some Wall Street analysts still see a solid case for Tesla’s stock, which is trading at more than 1,100 times its earnings, according to data from Refinitiv.

“While the company is still far from the sort of scale to justify its stock price … production has exploded, and the company expects further expansion with the 2021 completion of its Berlin and Texas factories,” Bespoke Investment Group told clients.

But a closer look at the company’s financial results show that a big reason the company had a strong start to the year is because of its sale of regulatory credits, which brought in $518 million in revenue, and bitcoin holdings.

Tesla invested $1.5 billion in bitcoin last quarter while the cryptocurrency was soaring. Zachary Kirkhorn, the automaker’s “master of coin” (okay, chief financial officer), said the company later sold 10% of its position, resulting in a $101 million profit. That’s nearly a quarter of the $438 million Tesla earned when results are adjusted for stricter accounting standards.

And while there’s no denying that the company’s car sales could continue to boom this year, there are, as ever, a long list of risks.

CEO Elon Musk, whose official title is now “Technoking,” told investors Monday that the chip shortage was “a huge problem” for Tesla, and that it was battling “some of the most difficult supply chain challenges that we’ve ever experienced.”

Musk said the company should be able to stick to its target for better than 50% growth in sales this year, which would take sales over the 750,000 mark.

To reach that target, the company needs to continue to see strong demand in China, the world’s biggest market. But it faces potential issues there from both consumers and Beijing.

Last week, Tesla’s booth at the Shanghai Auto Show was briefly besieged by protesters complaining about problems with its cars. The episode comes after Tesla was summoned by regulators in February to discuss the quality of its Shanghai-made vehicles. The following month, reports surfaced that the country’s military had banned its vehicles from entering its complexes over concerns that cameras onboard could be used for spying.

Chinese authorities aren’t the only ones putting Tesla under the microscope. The company is also working with US safety investigators after two passengers were killed in a crash of a Tesla Model S outside Houston.

These challenges come as Tesla faces increasingly fierce competition from upstart rivals like Rivian, as well as traditional automakers like Volkswagen and General Motors that are ramping up their electric vehicle offerings.

Tesla could still rise above the fray — and Bespoke Investment Group notes that the company’s stock is often divorced from its financial performance anyways. But the path ahead for Tesla and its Technoking looks tricky.

Wall Street’s Archegos losses just topped $10 billion

Losses caused by the collapse of US hedge fund Archegos are piling up, my Appradab Business colleague Charles Riley reports.

The latest: Swiss bank UBS (UBS) revealed on Tuesday that it lost $774 million from last month’s implosion of Archegos Capital Management, a bigger hit than many analysts expected. The announcement came as Japan’s Nomura (NMR) said it would book losses of $2.9 billion from Archegos, a sharp increase from its initial estimate of $2 billion.

Global banks have now disclosed losses of at least $10.4 billion from the failure of Archegos, a New York-based family office that managed the fortune of investor Bill Hwang. Some smaller banks may also have been hit, and the fallout has taken the shine off an otherwise strong earnings season for global banks.

Credit Suisse (CS) has been rocked hardest. The Swiss bank said last week that the collapse will cost it a total of $5.5 billion, and it has announced the departure of its top investment banker and chief risk officer. Other members of the executive board will not receive bonuses for 2020.

Morgan Stanley (MS) suffered a $911 million loss, and Japanese lender Mitsubishi UFJ Securities is expecting to lose roughly $300 million.

Remember: Archegos used borrowed money to build massive positions in stocks including media companies ViacomCBS (VIACA) and Discovery, and was unable to pay back its lenders when share prices dropped. The resulting damage to banks has raised concerns about the dangers of leverage and led to calls for tighter regulation.

Is the $2 trillion company club about to expand?

Apple (AAPL) is the only American firm to reach a $2 trillion market value. But it could soon have a lot more company in that elite club, my Appradab Business colleague Paul R. La Monica reports.

Microsoft is worth just under $2 trillion. Amazon has a market capitalization of $1.7 trillion, and Google owner Alphabet is worth about $1.5 trillion.

Tech stocks have come roaring back in recent weeks, helping to push these Nasdaq stalwarts near record highs.

In fact, tech���s Magnificent Seven — Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Alphabet, Microsoft and Tesla— are now collectively worth about $9.3 trillion. That’s a quarter of the S&P 500’s total market value of $37.5 trillion.

“The earnings expectations for the S&P 500 are through the roof for this year as investors expect this great recovery, and tech is a big part of that,” said Daniel Morgan, senior portfolio manager with Synovus Trust Company. “These companies are just so dominant.”

Morgan noted that while some of the tech leaders of the 1990s, such as IBM, Oracle and Cisco, eventually began to post slower earnings and sales growth, that doesn’t appear to be happening with the current industry leaders.

“They are high-growth companies but also defensive because they could still do well if the reopening of the economy doesn’t go smoothly after Covid,” said Chris Gaffney, president of world markets at TIAA Bank. “Some consumer behavior changes during the pandemic may be permanent.”

Curriculum design in 2020

Curriculum has historically been defined as a “product or completely contained system” (Wiles & Bondi, 2015, p. 3) based on a set of clear educational objectives (Tyler, 2013). While curriculum design was seen as a set of defined steps a designer follows to create the curriculum. The definition of both curriculum and the steps toward creating it have become more nuanced over time. In the postmodern age, curriculum now encompasses the planned and unplanned, the documented and hidden. The steps, once “linear, sequential and easily quantifiable” are giving way “to a more complex, pluralistic, unpredictable system or network” (Wiles & Bondi, 2015, p. 3). 

Ubiquitous access to technology and the Internet, have certainly turned many curricular assumptions on their head. Educational objectives based on merely disseminating content knowledge are questioned as learners have easy access to that information (Wiles & Bondi, 2015). As the pandemic has shown, curriculum and curriculum design also need to be much more agile. 

One analogy that comes to mind for a way to think about the evolution of curriculum design in 2020 is the evolution of software design and development process. When I was a product manager at IBM, we used the traditional Waterfall methodology which laid out clear steps to follow in an orderly fashion over months or years that resulted in the delivery of a final product. It was a good model to use for big, complex software projects that were delivered through physical means like the hardware it was installed on or diskettes, CDs and DVDs. Access to high speed Internet changed the software delivery mechanism and now consumers expect fast updates and upgrades. The Agile development methodology is an iterative process where every few weeks a team cycles through the creation of new features, updating existing features, and fixing bugs after each iteration.

When I first stumbled into my K-8 teaching career, I was asked to create the technology curriculum because it did not exist at that school or really anywhere, for that matter. I was pointed to curriculum from other subject areas as models for my work. Slick and thorough, I sensed that these had been produced through a Waterfall-based method. So I found myself teaching while trying to produce a K-8 technology curriculum that satisfied administration and parents. I found once I had documented something, it felt obsolete pretty quickly.

Over my teaching career, I have found myself leaning toward an Agile approach to curriculum development using CS standards and the overall mission of the school as the framework, but working week to week or project to project with colleagues and students to create or remix curriculum to fit our unique situation. I often wondered if it was just the nature of computer science and technology education, where there is always something new to learn, that made the Agile approach so helpful. But with the pandemic and a rapid move to distance learning, I saw many teachers using a 1-3 week iterative approach to curriculum, that paid greater attention to student needs, parent concerns, accessibility, cultural contexts, and the sharing of resources across domains.

I believe that the curriculum design process in 2020 needs to continue to embrace an Agile-based approach. As the Agile Alliance notes, "Agile is the ability to create and respond to change. It is a way of dealing with, and ultimately succeeding in, an uncertain and turbulent environment." The pandemic and the racial inequalities that have come to the fore, demonstrate that we are in a time of great change. The curriculum design process needs to be an iterative, collaborative process that incorporates the voice of all the stakeholders.

Pairing:  Captain Swan

Summary:   A series of unrelated, fluffy one shots featuring Killian Jones and  Emma Swan and the relationship that makes us all swoon. Will contain  both canon and AU stories. My contribution to Operation Rainbow Kisses  and Unicorn Stickers (aka, my attempt to drown out the season 4 finale  angst with ridiculous levels of fluff.)

CS Genre: Lieutenant Duckling

Lieutenant Killian Jones of the Camelot navy stood on deck and watched as the busy port of Misthaven loomed ever closer.  It was lovely in its own way, but Killian’s true love was the sea.  He hoped that however this current diplomatic mission worked out, he would not be forced to give up his sailing adventures.

“We’ve made it, little brother,” Captain Liam Jones said, clapping a firm hand on Killian’s shoulder.

“Younger brother,” Killian corrected automatically, his eyes still scanning the harbor.  “And so it seems we have.  The men appear eager to go ashore.”

“Aye,” Liam said, looking around at the sailors finishing up the tasks necessary to safely bring a ship into port.  They wore wide, delighted smiles as they worked.  “Let us just hope we’re not called to break up any drunken brawls tonight like the last shore leave.”

Killian grinned.  “I doubt there’s much fear of that.  After the dressing down you gave all of them the last time, I’d wager they’ll be model patrons at any of the pubs they choose to frequent.”

Liam quirked a brow.  “I should hope so.  Tonight, after all, is quite important.  We can’t afford to be called out to referee our men.”

Killian’s stomach dropped as the nerves took over.  Liam did not exaggerate.  Tonight was crucially important to their kingdom.  Very important diplomatic ties between Misthaven and Camelot could be forged tonight, and the responsibility fell squarely on his shoulders.  He’d no idea if he was up to the task, but the thought of letting his family, of letting his king down was simply unthinkable.

“Breathe, Killian,” Liam said, gently.  “You are ready for this, and it could conceivably change your life in marvelous ways.”

“I’m not sure I’m ready for a change,” Killian muttered.

Liam squeezed his shoulder. “Perhaps a bit of time ashore will do you good as well, brother.  Take a few hours; forget about what tonight entails.  Just enjoy yourself.”

“Liam, I’m not sure. Perhaps I should stay aboard and prepare…”

He gasped, his words forgotten, all rational thought suddenly abandoning him as he saw her sitting on a bench along shore.  She was the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen, with her long, blonde hair like wavy strands of pure sunshine, pulled up at the sides, her sparkling green eyes, her simple peasant’s dress that did nothing to hide her slim, womanly figure.  If ever he’d seen a goddess in the flesh, this woman was it.

Her eyes met his, and it was as though a bolt of lightning struck him, tethered him to her.  He’d fancied comely lasses before, of course, but he’d never felt anything like this…like he’d come in to a cozy home after a lifetime out in the cold.  He couldn’t tear his eyes from her if he wanted to.

“Nonsense, Killian,” Liam said, clearly unaware of the earthshattering moment his brother was having. “There’s nothing left to prepare. Go.  Enjoy yourself.”

“Aye,” Killian said, absently, already moving toward the gangplank and toward the woman he simply must meet.

As Killian made his way off the Jewel, he noticed the two men approach his blonde woman.  It took but a heartbeat to ascertain that their presence was very much unwanted, and Killian’s heart began to beat faster as he pushed his way through the crowd.

The woman got abruptly to her feet, backing away from the man who’d taken a seat beside her, but before she could make her exit, the second man grabbed her from behind.  The first man stalked toward her, his intent clear. She fought back, but with her arms pinned by the second brute, she had little chance to defend herself.

Sudden, white-hot rage filled Killian, and he took the last few yards at a run, already pulling his sword from its sheath.

“Unhand the lady!” he said with a deadly calm voice as he placed the tip of his sword against the man’s back.  “Unhand the lady or I’ll drive my sword through your heart!”

The man cursed, spinning around to face Killian as he reached for his own weapon.  Killian was prepared.  His sword against the brute’s chest before he’d even fully turned.  For a moment the man glared at Killian defiantly, but finally he turned his head.

“Let the bitch go,” he muttered to his companion.  “She ain’t worth dying over.”

Keeping one eye on the man he held at sword point, Killian watched as the companion did as he was bid, dropping his arms to his side.  As soon as she was free, the woman spun on her heels, pulled back her fist and walloped her attacker with a punch that would have laid his best soldiers out. The man’s eyes rolled back in his head, and he crashed to the ground like a mighty oak tree in the forest.

Killian felt his admiration for this amazing woman grow by leaps and bounds as she shook her hand, giving the unconscious man a venomous glare and a kick from her tiny, dainty foot.

The remaining goon cursed her again under his breath, and Killian applied pressure to his sword, just enough to break the skin.

“That was not polite,” he growled.  “Apologize to the lady.”

“Piss off,” the man said, glaring at him.

Killian pushed a little harder, relishing the man’s quick gasp of pain.  “I’ll not ask a second time.”

The man looked recalcitrant for another moment, but then backed down.  “I apologize for my behavior,” he said sullenly.

“Now get out of my sight before I decide to rethink my leniency.”

The man obeyed, hurrying off, muttering oaths under his breath the whole time.  Killian watched him go for a moment before turning his attention back to the woman.

“Are you alright, lass?”

She brushed off her skirts, a look of annoyance in her eyes.  “Yeah, I’m fine,” she said, looking up at him.  “I could have handled it, you know.  I’m capable of saving myself.”

“Aye, I can see that,” he answered with a gentle smile.  “You’ve a quite impressive right hook, love.  I however cannot stand by idly when a woman is in need, particularly when she’s ambushed from behind.  Bad form and all that.”

“Perhaps I could have handled it on my own,” the woman conceded, smiling up at him as she took a step closer, “but thank you for your help, all the same.”

“It was my very great pleasure, Miss…?”

Killian watched as a flicker of indecision passed across her face.  “Swan,” she said finally.  You may call me Swan.”

“Curious name, love. Have you a given name to go with it?”

“I….” she began.  “I think for the moment it’s best if you simply stick with Swan.  It’s a nickname given to me by my father.”

“Well Swan,” Killian said with a neat, precise bow, “I’m pleased to make your acquaintance. Lieutenant Killian Jones at your service.”

Swan curtsied, allowing him to take her hand and brush a soft kiss along the back of it.  Killian gasped as his lips touched her skin. There it was again, that strange electricity that bound them together.  From the widening of her eyes, he’d swear she felt it as well.

“So Swan, might I have the pleasure of your company for the noonday meal?  I find I’m rather loathe to bid you farewell quite yet.”

She smiled up at him, and to his delight nodded.  “Lead the way, lieutenant.”

Notes:

--So there you have it.  Emma and Killian have met and worked together to defeat her attackers (they do, after all, make quite the team, lol).  Now it’s time for them to share a meal and get to know each other better…to an extent, at least.  Princess Emma, clearly doesn’t have any intention of letting the handsome stranger know who she really is.  

--Up next: Depending on how much I get written before the muse says “That’s enough for this week”, you’ll either get the last or the penultimate chapter of this story.  Killian and “Swan” spend a pleasant afternoon together and then reluctantly part, believing they’ll never see each other again.  Emma prepares for her ball, and Killian gets on with his mysterious important diplomatic business.  But are they right?  When they say goodbye at the pub, is it really goodbye forever?
