Thanks for the reply! I think the reason Calvanism comes into play for me is that the predestination that Calvanism is rooted in (some are preordained to be saved and some not, human effort means nothing) informed neoliberalism in a cultural background manner.
Good people/bad people. It's the right people that matter. Etc. You can see the fingerprints.
That video is excellent btw, I remember watching it when it came out. Shaun always brings receipts.
I do think it's not that ML is trying specifically to push the political ideology, so much as the writing crew is so steeped in it that it simply bleeds onto the paper.
Re: more eat the rich
It comes down, I think, to a particular moral framework that TA seems to ascribe to. JK Rowling is another good example. There's a name for it.. it might be Calvinist?
Basically: The problem isn't having rich people, it's having the *wrong* rich people. You're not a part of an exploitative system that concentrates wealth, you're a *bad rich person*.
The same lens is used for everything else. Nothing is actually systemic. The *system* can't be questioned, only individual actors within the system can be called out as bad at fulfilling their role.
If you use this lens to examine other points in ML that seem weird, I think you'll find they suddenly seem more coherent.
Now- this approach is patently wrong on it's face, but that never stopped people from believing in anything, ever.
(Post that spawned this ask)
The word you're looking for is probably "neoliberalism" and I've noticed it, too! I haven't mentioned it because JK Rowling and her works have become such an upsetting topic for many fans and former fans, but Miraculous absolutely matches Harry Potter's concerning messaging about people being the issue, not the system. The system is inherently good and should not be questioned. I hated that as a kid because I was an avid reader and this wasn't how this kind of story was supposed to go! Why wasn't anything being fixed? Why weren't the inequalities being address? Why weren't the slaves being set free? What is this mess? Don't show me a broken system if you're not going to fix it!!!
If anyone is curious about this world view, I'll give you a video essay on the topic of why Harry Potter is just like that. It's about JK Rowling's political views and how it's reflected in her books which does indeed match Miraculous with things like systems being inherently good and people falling into the categories of "good" and "bad" based on their world view or "team alignment" instead of their actions. The last one really shows up in Miraculous as you can see with the redemption nonsense. Nathalie is inherently good so we welcome her to the good side with no effort required. Chloe is inherently bad so redemption is impossible. Marinette is inherently good so her being mean to Kagami is no big deal. Chloe is inherently bad so her being mean to Marinette in similar ways is horrifically wrong. Really depressing way to view the world.
There are other similarities, too. I'm going to have the video start at the part where it really dives into the neoliberalism stuff, but I encourage you to rewind to the start and watch the hour before that part as it's still relevant to this discussion. Pretend it's about Miraculous and you'll be shocked how many matches there are! It's honestly kind of fun. Like there's a section that talks about time travel and how it was solved by just removing time travel from the universe in an incredibly forced manner and a section that talks about the house elves thing that you could easily port over when talking about the Kwamis. I think about the Kwamis' being slaves a lot. It's a lot more subtle than HP, but it's still there with things like Su-Han talking about how it's bad that Plagg is out of the box since he's supposed to be locked away forever apparently. A line that's played like a joke not an indication that a freedom movement is needed. Nooroo is the only Kwami whose enslavement is a problem because he has a bad master. The other kwamis being slaves is fine for some reason...

Did you assume there is something Religious about my bringing Free Wil?
If so you probably made a very assumption about my Theology, I'm an Arminian not a Calvinist.
What I believe about Free Will I consider consistent with my religion but it's a conclusion you can come to independent of it, there are Atheists who reject Free Will on the same grounds I do.
I'm referring to Determinism not Fatalism.
People actually out there arguing that the age of consent should be raised to 25. Do they inhabit this planet? Why are people so utterly desperate to infantilise grown adults? My parents had been married for 7 years and had a child by the time they were 25.
Imagine saying with a straight face that you're functionally a child until your mid 20s. Sounds an awful lot like trying to avoid responsibility for yourself to me. If you're still a 'minor' then it's easy to say you can't be held accountable for your actions. Grow up.

Some of my hot takes for the fandom. I have no desire to insult anybody with these, these are only my opinions. But now onto the hot takes:
Dusttale is a better written than Dreamtale once we consider the novels. For more elaboration, one of the three creators of Dusttale had written a bunch of novels that are considered semi canon to the narrative. These novels detail and show the downfall of Sans from being The Judge to becoming The Genocider. Each part of the novel, which is available in AO3 though in the Korean language, is a delight to read and some parts of it even gave me chills. It made Dusttale from just a mediocre AU for me to one of the best aus, a straight 7/10. It's not the best but the side novels definitely need attention.
Error!Sans is genuinely stronger than many people make him out to be. While he's definitely not the immortal invincible destroyer that the majority of the fandom portrayed as. He's also not as harmless, remember he has canonically admitted to destroying universes before. We even see him during when he destroying a universe, the Undyne one where he first met Core. So yeah, while I still ain't buying him as a super strong entity that most of the fandom portrays him as, I also don't buy him as harmless. He's somewhere in the middle for me, a decently strong guy who's still a dork/loser, it's literally one of his best traits for me.
Execution is the most important thing when it comes to writing. Even bad ideas can be incredibly good if they are executed well. Dusttale novels are a good example since they turned a bad and boring idea, Sans kills everyone for lv to defeat the human, into a good read.
The problem with the over sansification in the fandom with most outcodes turning out to be Sans is that most of them don't have effort put into them. There are genuinely very few new Sans outcodes I have seen that have actual effort put into them or any story besides a summary. It is this factor that often paints them in a bad light and makes people lose interest. A good written character would always attract people regardless if its a Sans or any other Undertale character and vice versa for bad written.
Axetale is kinda solid as an au and should definitely be noticed more.
Again just my opinions and I don't mean to offend anyone with them. That is all.
Link for the Dusttale side novels

honestly i feel like a lot of the uproar about generative ai art specifically comes down to a feeling of jealousy that somebody is getting a pretty picture without putting in an arbitrary amount of work in to get it.
its literally the same feeling/argument conservatives have about welfare and other social safety nets - that it's "unfair" that people are "getting something for nothing" because "i had to work for x, why shouldn't they"
because god forbid technology makes life easier
and like yeah yeah ai is an issue for labor rights, although the environmental costs are way overhyped, its horrible for misinformation and that is all true HOWEVER
these arguments only ever seem to get pulled out whenever somebody correctly clocks that the person frothing at the mouth about ai-generated visual art (bc thats 99% of their complaints, i never hear this about other forms of LLM and machine learning) is just jealous that somebody else found a less tedious process of making cool picture before you did and is now reaping the benefits and you're mad that you had to walk uphill both ways in the snow to get pretty picture and these kids today don't know the struggle
it's literally ye olde calvanism but tech flavored lmao

“During the 1950s and 1960s, Los Angeles had its own Motown records. Dootone Records began on a front porch in Watts and grew to become one of the largest Black-owned record labels in the country. The label's owner, Dootsie Williams, was a trailblazing Black music executive and entrepreneur who not only left an impact on the music industry, but also in his community.
Dootone Records, also known as Dooto Records, was perhaps the most prolific West Coast doo-wop label, producing doo-wop favorites by The Medallions, The Larks, The Cuff Links and The Calvanes.
Located in South Central Los Angeles, its first couple of years were not especially distinguished but in 1954 it produced "Earth Angel" by The Penguins, which is now regarded as one of the most revered doo-wop ballads of all time. From there it went on to be a leading proponent of the doo-wop sound.
Founded in 1949 by record producer Dootsie Williams, originally as the Blue Records label. Two years later he changed the name to Dootone. One of the first artists he recorded on Dootone was a violinist named Johnny Creach, who years later would become popular as Papa John Creach.
While the label would record a wide variety of music, it would be best known for a series of comedy recordings by Redd Foxx.”

also, the whole “this person did something Bad and will be Bad forever because of it” isnt actually holding someone accountable! it is just straight up moral purtianism.
yes you should hold people accountable to their bad actions, but holding someone accountable means telling them their behavior was shitty and giving them a chance to apologize and do better. what people are doing around the current situation is not holding people accountable as much as it is a mass harassment campaign because they believe this person is Bad Forever
I'm not looking to debate or rip apart the current ... topic right now. But I do want to express how terribly disappointed I am with this community. Not surprised, but disappointed.
If we held everyone accountable, always, for the worst things they've done, there would be no hope for ANY of us for a safe and happy future. There would be no point in trying to accomplish anything. Human beings are an imperfect species. Especially when they're a traumatized child in spaces for traumatized people. Every single person should get the chance to atone and apologize for the things they've done. They are allowed to grow up and become wiser and better people than they used to be. You don't have to allow them room back into your life. You don't have to like them. But you don't get to go "This person is evil for this and this and this even though they've apologized, they'll always be this horrible person".
If you're seeing this, I'm proud of you. You're miles from where you used to be on your personal growth history from what we've seen. I hope this isn't going to discourage you from keeping it up <3
#i am begging you guys to like actually fucking look into moral puritanism and calvanism#because so many of you are pulling this shit!!!!!#you can hold people accountable and give them chances to change and do better!!!!!

May I also just say - the cultural background of the authors shine through in a very ironic way.
Harry Potter is about a secular society and is written by a religious woman, and Celia's Journey is about a religious society and is written by a non-religious woman
FYI Celia’s Journey is fundamentally a story about growing up. It’s about adolescence and adulthood and responsibility and choice. This is why it’s derivative to call it just like Harry Potter. Those books aren’t about coming of age, they’re about the triumph of good over evil
#it’s hilarious#and you can TELL#you can tell Harry Potter is informed by JKR’s Calvanism and you can tell the Overseer isn’t meant to be one big metaphor for the trinity#it’s crazy#mg
