Now, of course, there are plenty of non-approptiation ways to wear a Cowichan sweater.

The first and best way to do so is to order one hand-knit by an actual Cowichan artisan. The Cowichan tribe website has a list of its artisans with a way to contact them for bespoke craft orders. Knitwithpurpose.com is a website where you can buy a custom-made hand-knit sweaters, but they seem to be a lot more expensive than just contacting a caftsperson on your own.

Such pieces can be a really worthwhile investment. Not only are the sweaters cozy and good looking, a hand-knit sweater made from quality wool WILL last you your entire lifetime, and then can be passed on to others as an heirloom.

You can also knit your own.

Now full honesty I haven't been able to find a pattern actually made by a Cowichan designer with money going back into the tribe, but I have found plenty of patterns that at least remain faithful to traditional designs.

The biggest and most important thing you can do with knitting your own is purchasing authentic Cowichan wool to knit with, an integral part of the traditional sweaters.

As a USian I’ve heard many stereotypes about Canadians over the years. Super friendly has always been the most prevalent, and the runner up usually involved moose or mounties. When I lived right up at the border for a few years I discovered the two weirdest possible Canadian stereotypes.

The first was that Canadians would drive down to my mattress store, buy a Tempurpedic pillow, then return it a month later. Like. Any time we sold just a pillow it was a Canadian and 90% were returned a month later. I cannot and will never be able to explain this phenomenon.

But the second weird Canadian thing was The Milk. My roommates and I would shop at Costco and if we had the misfortune to go on a weekend we would just see Costco sized shopping carts full of milk. And Costco doesn’t have regular gallons! They have those massive two gallon jugs.

We’d see carts entirely filled with jugs of milk and every person loading up a pallet of milk into their car had Canadian plates. Even mild Canadians would have at least three of those milk jugs.

It was a subject for wild speculation. Did they bathe in the milk? Was one Canadian volunteered as tribute to bring back milk to their whole city block? Did they not have cows in Canada? Was there a Canadian black market for shitty US milk?

The local Costco had to literally expand their fridge section to accommodate the milk runs that would happen. It was super weird. But now I just sound like a crazy person when I make a Canadian milk joke because only people in that city knew about this hyper specific trend.

A popular water bottle is being recalled in both Canada and the U.S. after reports of injuries suffered from the bottle exploding. Health Canada announced a joint recall Wednesday with the U.S. Consumer and Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) and i-Drink Products Inc. for Drinkmate’s 1L carbonation bottles, which could potentially explode from extra pressure while being used, resulting in injuries and lacerations to users and bystanders.

Air Canada and the union representing its flight attendants say their strike has ended after the two parties reached a new tentative agreement.

The airline said in a statement on Tuesday that it would gradually resume service after reaching a mediated settlement.

“Mediation discussions were begun on the basis that the union commit to have the airline’s 10,000 flight attendants immediately return to work, allowing the airline to resume the operations of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, which have been grounded since Aug. 16,” the airline wrote in a news release.
