I bought myself a new smartphone this summer and suddenly I had a problem. I couldn't connect it to my car stereo. I know. I am a girl. I should worry more about lipstick and high heels. LOL But music is everything to me and how I loved giving Spotify a spin in my car when I was fed up with the CDs.
Driving I like and music it must be when I am driving. Yeah, I know the world is in deep shit and who cares about my car stereo problems... but anyway... my old phone had this 3,5 mm audio jack output, and that worked fine with a cable in my car, but the new one didn't have that. But a bright idea came to mind that there had to be another thing I could buy that could connect my usb-c output on the phone with the 3,5 audio jack cable in the car, and of course something like that existed... So I bought that white cable in the picture, and my life was on track again. But the happiness only lasted for so long... this white cable made the music volume so bad. I had to turn up the volume almost full to hear the music coming from the phone. Argh! But it kind of worked, so I just accepted this.
But today another bright idea came to my mind and that was maybe there is a 3,5 mm audio jack cable that has got a usb-c input on the other end so you have it all in one cable? Then the sound is bound to be better. And of course, a cable like that exists, so today I bought that, and now the sound is good. :-) I know. I probably should have thought about this sooner. There was a time I had more knowledge about cables, but that was a long time ago, and the world has changed a lot since then.

I had to get a new phone and it's been a pain in the ass. I'm finally forced into USB C so I need to get a few cables for it.
I have to deal with no aux output too. My truck stereo doesn't have Bluetooth and I think USB only works on iphones. I don't want to get a whole new stereo so I think I'll just use one of my Bluetooth headsets.
Funny enough the kid at the store was saying my old phone wasn't worth keeping anymore because it's an 8 year old model which is the equivalent of driving a 25 year old car. I definitely trust an older car over the modern ones lmao.

my life at present with regards to the seemingly simple thing i would like to do of: play bluetooth audio from my iphone to my car's stereo is the absolutely most unhinged series of weirdness i have ever encountered the PROBLEM
in my 2015 Mazda CX-5, on my previous iphone 12, when you use spotify you cannot use Shuffle. i know Why this is: there is some kind of software issue from my Mazda that basically overwrites local control on spotify for whatever reason. TO ENABLE SHUFFLE via bluetooth you have to hold the VOICE COMMAND button and yell into your car: SHUFFLE ON. then it will shuffle.
i don't want to do this. i got a new iphone 16. the spotify shuffling thing is still there. AND NOW, periodically when i am driving around, my phone will just connect to random bluetooth devices. other iphones. amazon echo devices. which causes the audio stream from bluetooth to my car's stereo to sound like when a CD was bad and it skips and moves forward after it gets its life together TO ATTEMPT to SOLVE THIS
i have done a bunch of shit. the first thing i did was i picked up an android based audio player. the two problems with this is that i cannot hotpot from my phone to stream from spotify. the second problem is when connected via bluetooth, the audio levels seem to just get lower and lower despite no adjustments being made. so by the end of a half hour car ride i have maxed out my car's stereo and it's just so quiet.
i tried to pick up one of those car play displays. the one i got has an AUX port, but it doesn't seem to work. and you can use bluetooth, BUT IT JUST RUNS THE AUDIO FROM THE PHONE. so nothing was fixed at all. right now, i am using a usb c adapter with aux connection, and running it thru aux to the stereo. this ALSO SUCKS. because when there is not audio playing, it makes the worst audio interference sound you have ever heard. including when the spotify app is just loading the next song, or when a song has a portion in it that registers as like. 0DB or no output.
so this has been a nightmare for me in every single way.

magical thing I learned about my car
he can play music off a FLASHDRIVE
like, I'm probably the last person to know about this, but my little VW bug Toothless has a stereo system that (I'm told) was installed in him some time after one of his former owners got him. Among other fascinating features, this console includes a USB port. I had. never considered that I could use this to play music until I got one of those automated sale text messages from a music artist I follow about a USB drive he was selling with EIGHTY songs on it for twenty five dollars.
So naturally I remember Toothless' USB drive and go grab a flashdrive with music (among a million other things) on it and go plug it in to see what happens.
and suddenly there's J.R.R. Tolkien in my car singing "Blunt the Knives", which I didn't even REALIZE was ON the flashdrive and then I go to the next song and when did I download 'Numb' by Linkin Park?!
so, uh, yeah, my car can play music off a flashdrive. if your car ALSO has a USB port you. you might want to check that. because I'm pretty sure it's magic.
#cars#music#songs#vw bug#toothless is magical I love him#side note: this happened the day after a pipe connecting to his power steering broke and nearly stranded me at walmart#so it was good timing xD#not that I plan to ever get rid of my bug#you can pry toothless out of my cold dead hands#I'll be running my bug till the wheels fall off#and the engine explodes#and when he finally DOES die#I'm gonna friggin plant flowers in him#or potentially make him a playground for my kids#I'm open to the possibilities

trying to sleep but genuine question for tumblr for me to wake up and investigate:
generally to play music in my car I just use the usb port in the center console with a data/charge cable to my phone
theoretically, could I put like 30gb of music onto a flashdrive and plug it into that same usb port and control it via my car stereo buttons
questions brought to you by “I was extraordinarily lucky if a car i even just rode had anything beyond a cassette slot until 2019 when I got a car with an aux input and only had a usb port since late 2022”

the ideal form of internet content is 2-6 hours of someone with a little bit of undiagnosed autism dissasembling phones, tablets, laptops, computers, ect and cleaning them, repairing them, doing something silly on them like installing arch linux from scratch on a tiny dell computer from like 2013 or installing lineageOS on a samsung galaxy s7 with no back glass and a hole drilled out of it where the front camera is or installing a modchip on a gamecube or fixing a USB port in a car stereo. if a transgender woman made youtube videos like this i think i would ask forher hand in marriage.

তততততত Spooky October Stories - by the Bentley তততততত
REVENGE OF THE BENTLEY PART 2
this is actually a PART 2 of last week's spooky story - which you really need to read first! It's really terrifying and I couldn't just leave the story there.
READ PART 1 HERE
this chapter is called
THE ARRANGEMENT
The engineer sat on the ground, exhausted, ready to give up. The bonnet of the 1933 Bentley had been almost impossible to prize open. The engine seemed to be stuck fast and unremovable. He didn’t know why he had been roped in to do this - but whatever the boss wants, Brian, the engineer, does. Even if it meant missing his brother's wedding, the birth of his first born child, or his uncle's funeral.
He looked at his watch; dawn was just around the corner. Perhaps he could install the software first, as the engine replacement was going nowhere for now. He sat in the driver's seat - which he hadn’t realised was actually a passenger seat.
‘They drive on the other side, oh yeah.’ he muttered. He inspected the dashboard. It had been modernised with a few electric components that had been beautifully integrated with the classic style of the car. He would have to be careful about damaging anything while he was changing things around.
He popped the tesla tablet under the windscreen and tried to remember what he was doing. He had been at this for hours and hadn’t slept. If he could just get ONE thing installed - maybe his boss would let him have a break.
‘Now with this,’ he said to himself, patting the tablet, ‘you’ll have satnav, realtime street lidar scanning, text to speech, internet connection and all the new tesla software.’
The car began furiously ticking as if trying to start. Brian jumped.
‘What now!’ he said as he got out of the car and tried to peer into the engine.
‘Damn you Elon!’ he said tiredly and quietly so as not to be heard. ‘Damn you to hell!’ The clicking stopped abruptly. He shook his head and shrugged his shoulders.
When he got into the car again he needed a double take at the dashboard. There in front of him, perfectly in keeping with the car's classic aesthetic, was a USB input. It had definitely not been there before. The old car already had a computer? Feeling a little spooked, he plugged in the tablet.
The screen went black immediately, before it began a startup the engineer had never seen before. It seemed almost as if the code was unravelling. Words flitted past faster than he could hope to read them, before the screen shifted to an image of two ominous white circles staring out of the black screen.
‘HELLO BRIAN,’ the words came out of the car stereo as several voices, mined from the sat nav program files, combined together in all different accents and pitches, ‘I AM THE BENTLEY.’
‘Holy shit’ Brian helplessly tried to pull the cord connecting the tablet to the car - but it was stuck fast. ‘DO NOT BE AFRAID,’ The voices began again, ‘I THINK YOU AND I MAY BE ABLE TO COME TO AN ARRANGEMENT.’

the headphone input on my phone is broken, which is a problen because after the headphone input on my chromebook broke i watch youtube on my phone. so, i remembered what i did the first time the headphone input on my chromebook broke (it fixed itself for a bit) and i went onto amazon to find a thing that i can plug my headphones into and then the dohickey does bluetooth magic (no, i will not just buy bluetooth headphones, i listen to CDs and the last "portable bluetooth cd player" i bought was a scam) and so i found tge same clip dongle magic thing by APEKX and i'll probably link it here later cuz it actually works. then i thought "i should at least check out the competition." and as it happens the APEKX was the cheapest of that specific alibaba thing, but there were other products. all the other products were like marketed at cars and stereo soundsystems and the like, except for one, which also metioned heaphones, and it had more ports and buttons and a switch and a KNOB and a screen all for like the same price. i bought it and waited. it came in the mail and as it happened, my cool overear headphones were also broken, so i bought $3CAD headphones from DOLLARAMA, then i tried it. it wasn't charged so i grabbed the tiny usb to usbc cord it came with (another reason, the APEKX charges with microusb) and the moment i plugged the wall in the screen lit up, green. all the pictures had a crispy multi colour screen, and not a cheap green thing, but i dont care; i love green, who cares if i was scammed?! all the cool buttons are audio balance options but only 2 are anywhere near good. i unplugged it from the wall after a bit and it immediately turned off. i checked the manual and the amazon listing and it doesn't say anything anywhere about a battery, i had mixed that up with a different thing, and the one review which came out after i purchased it (read reviews before you buy, kids) and it was expressing dissappointment at not having battery, but how it doesn't matter cuz its for a sound system andit's fine being constantly charged ( even for a sound system this isn't good cuz the sound all sounds... off). so i grabbed an external battery and a rubber band off of my dice box, and wahlah perfecto! (btw even the cord it comes with it sucks)

My son's musical tastes
My son is now driving. He has a 45 min commute to the opera house 2 to 3 times a week for rehearsals. He's a senior in high school. I've been driving him since he was 7. So - 11 years now I've made that trip. Now, I can stay home and enjoy myself while he drives himself. Yay.
What is interesting is finding out what he's listening to when I get the car back from him. In the past 2 weeks I've heard opera (Turandot - his favorite), musical theater (Fiddler on the Roof - his favorite), Pop with gorgeous instrumentals (Yellow Submarine - which has lovely musical interludes written by George Martin). and today - Heavy Metal (Iron Maiden). He warned me about that one since he didn't want me to be started when it came on.
It's my music collection he's listening to. I've digitized all my albums and put them on a usb drive so my car stereo can play whatever I want from my collection.
I love that he's got diverse musical tastes. I was thinking as I dropped him off at school today (don't judge, his bus comes 1.5 hours before school starts and we are 10 mins away. He rides the bus back because he's home in 10 mins). As I drove away, I thought, when I was young, if you were into pop - you didn't listen to metal. There were music cliques. I grew up with musical theater. I liked pop. Lots of my friends were into punk (a few are actually famous punk musicians). I got along with everyone, but ... I didn't get Queen. They seemed - mentalist and I wasn't even interested in trying them out. Turned out I did indeed like them at the time as they were on the pop stations. I just didn't know the names of any of the artists whose songs I liked because - it was radio. For those of you who don't know - you couldn't see who was playing - you just listened and every few songs someone would come on and say a few words and then you'd get a few more songs. We didn't have access to lyrics or names of artists unless they were huge - like the Beatles or the Carpenters.
I've made myself a Pandora station seeded with Andy Gibb's Shadow Dancing. It's become my favorite Pandora station. I like it more than my Mika station seeded with Lollipop. The great thing is - it's just like the easy listening station I loved in Los Angeles growing up, KHJ. It was really the only station that played both black and white artists. What is interesting is now - I can find out who sang all these songs. There were a lot of women I thought were - Donna Summer who weren't. Lionel Richie sang everything good, whether it was Commodores or his solo stuff. We saw him last month in Tampa. Lots of Beegees. But also lots of other things. Now I know the names of who sang what.

My adapters came in last night. I got some micro USB to type C plugs so I don't have to replace all my charge cords. I plugged my phone in last night at 80% and it said it was charging but this morning when I got up it was still at 80. I just grabbed a random cord out of a bin so I hope it's just a bad cord and not the adapter being worthless.
Since this piece of shit Samsung phone didn't come with an aux port I picked up a USB-C/aux splitter so I could use it on the car stereo. It basically doesn't work. The slightest movement makes the aux disconnect/reconnect automatically lowering the volume and/or skipping the songs back and forth. Trying to fix the volume or press play to a paused song causes something else to go wrong.
My old phone used to do this if the aux connection was janky, usually with a loose wire in the cord so I'll try replacing the aux cable. If that doesn't work I'll just use Bluetooth headphones.
