I really appreciate the “show don’t tell” that the show employs compared to the US version, but especially how we don’t get the same closure for Carol with Pat as Pete does. There’s no Carol apologising while Pat listens, no big conversation about it. They show up, Pat isn’t as angry as he is upset, but he still loves his family and needs them to hold onto in death. We don’t know if Carol felt remorse, if she was ever sorry for being so blatant in her cheating and breaking Pat’s trust, maybe she doesn’t even think she needs to be sorry because as far as she knows, Pat never found out, and she got re-married. Maybe she is feeling guilty and that’s why she visits. Maybe it’s for Daley’s closure more than hers, and she just values Pat’s role in his life so much that she wouldn’t separate the two. Maybe she thinks Pat’s there somewhere, maybe she doesn’t. The ambiguity of her actions make her more interesting rather than just the guilty cheater trying to make up for her mistakes or the guiltless mother that knows she tried to reach out and spice up their life to no avail, but still wants Daley to be involved in something regarding his dad.

Do you lay on your bed staring at the ceiling while listening to The Beatles' "For No One" and think about Humphrey and Sophie, Fanny and George, Pat and Carol, and Julian and Margot driving yourself to the brink of insanity or are you normal

Ok but the way ghosts writes multilayered/conflicting romantic relationships,,,,,,
Fanny hates George. He never gave her what she needed in life. Every time she brings him up, it’s to vent about him. He killed her and had no issue covering it up and living without her. She has to relive this brutal betrayal every day. But she stops Alison from throwing his portrait away. She doesn’t like to look at it but can’t bear the thought of not having it. She uses it to remember him and their life together. She still thinks she needs him even though he never needed her.
Pat adores Carol. Or he did until he found out she had been cheating on him with his best friend for most of their marriage. He was furious. Memories of his family were all he had left and she took that from him too. He screams at Alison to send her away, that he never wants to see her ever again, to kill her. But every time he recounts a memory of her he can’t help but smile. He gets a far-off dreamy look like he’s falling in love for the first time all over again. If you asked, he would probably say that despite everything, she’s one of the best things that ever happened to him.
Humphrey wanted to love Sophie, he really did. She spent over twenty years hating him and he tried to content himself with that. They didn’t share a bedroom, couldn’t have a conversation, and weren’t even able to make it through a single meal without someone storming out. But she cared enough to put an immediate and decisive end to any unkind whispers behind his back. He cared enough to sacrifice his own life so she could live. And even though any nice comment they made to each other was laced with passive aggression, several hundred years later he still thinks of her fondly and mourns what could’ve been.

JANCYWEEK2024 | mythos ✨
The myth spread across the land, quickly gaining notoriety: Nancy Wheeler— goddess of grain— had been wandering the mortal realm when all of a sudden Jonathan Byers— god of the dead— dragged her to the underworld, trapping her there with him until the end of time. The story, as horrifying and tragic as it is, is just that. A myth. Something Tommy probably sneered about in spiteful jest only for Carol to repeat to all who would listen. But it is still just a myth, and a bullshit one at that. The real story is far less scandalous, if you care to know... Nancy Wheeler had been in the mortal realm, but she was the one who sought out Jonathan Byers. You see, her best friend, Barbara Holland— a mortal— had been missing for days, leaving behind no evidence of her whereabouts. Nancy, fearing the worst, confronted Jonathan to see if Barbara's soul had made it to the underworld. Together, they embarked on a journey across the realms to solve the mystery of Barbara's death and during that time, they grew fond of one another, surprised at how different the other was from their preconceived assumptions. Once they ensured justice for Barbara's murder, and it was time to part ways, Jonathan was prepared to let Nancy return to the heavens and resume his lonely rule in isolation. But just before he could send her away, Nancy grabbed a pomegranate off his table, popped a handful of seeds in her mouth, and expressed her desire to stay at his side. In truth, Nancy is able to come and go from the underworld as she pleases but she chooses to stay with Jonathan so they can rule the underworld, together and in love.

Ok, something that I love about Codex Alera is that, even through the early story (I'm currently in early second book), the politics are fluid. They change and evolve and there's consequences through the world for what the main characters are doing.
I think too often, fantasy feels too self contained to the story that is told, ie, writers are aware of the way society changes towards the main character, but it feels like they are not aware that this would also impact someone completely out of the direct scope of the story. This makes the world building incredibly one dimensional, and is usually a consequence of a small number of pov and also of using politics and social change as window dressing and to carry the plot forward

Darren McGavin portrayed Carl Kolchak for the first time in the TV movie The Night Stalker that premiered on January 11, 1972. The screenplay was written by Sci-Fi legend Richard Matheson based on a story by Jeffrey Grant Rice and Max Hodge. In this movie, he was a reporter in Las Vegas working for Tony Vincenzo (Simon Oakland) and the Daily News (in the Next movie, The Night Strangler, he worked in Seattle for Tony at the Seattle Daily Chronicle, and in the TV show they lived in Chicago and he worked for Tony at the Independent News Service). In this movie, Kolchak found himself investigating a series of murders committed by a vampire. ("The Night Stalker" TV Event)

Pat couldn’t sleep. He sighed for the umpteenth time and rolled over to look at the figure snoring softly next to him in the bed. He had been dating James for three years now but two months ago, they had made the jump to living together. Now was supposed to be a “honeymoon phase,” as the youth called it, but Pat didn’t feel any of that. At first, he figured it was because they were too old for it, but any feelings of excitement he initially felt were quickly replaced with anxious anticipation. Everything was reminding him of… her.

Has anyone written a Carol/Brandish accidentally kills the Butcher fic? Admittedly a horrifying thought and something even Carol doesn't deserve, but it could be a very funny oneshot. Any longer and the humor wouldn't really stick.

there is such a fascinating difference between characters and real people because no matter how multifaceted the piece represents the character there will always be bias and missing pieces and a tendency of the audience to boil down that character into bite-size palatable bits. like there's always a good guy and there's always a villain and it has everything to do with the person writing or creating that character and nothing to do with the perceived person that the audience believes the character is. I just think the relationship between the bias of the creator and the limitations of media and the audience reaction to stories is endlessly interesting.
