DIIV - Frog In Boiling Water (2024)

DIIV — Frog In Boiling Water (Fantasy)
If 2019’s Deceiver was DIIV frontman Cole Smith’s reckoning with the self-deception he perceived in 2016’s Is The Is Are, then new album Frog In Boiling Water is the band collectively turning their attention towards the universal clusterfuck that was the COVID pandemic and its aftermath. DIIV took the opportunity during lockdown to start up their own podcast, where they took a deep dive (pun intended) into the music that either directly influenced them, or fans identified as being potential influences on their sound: The Cure, Slowdive, Sonic Youth. The influence of My Bloody Valentine was writ large on Deceiver, mainly due to the production input of Sonny Diperri, but the band didn’t just master glide guitar; they took the psychedelic heft of Kevin Shields’ best work and melded it with the melodic nous of their own earliest, catchiest material. Now, on Frog In Boiling Water, DIIV have synthesized a bunch of fresh influences, including guitarist Andrew Bailey’s penchant for hip-hop, plus the band’s new-found fascination with sampling and tape loops, to craft their most diverse and perhaps finest album to date.
The production input of Chris Coady harks back to the spacious, dreamy heaviness of Beach House’s 7 (which, coincidentally, has a song called “Dive”), plus there are obvious guitar touchstones looming in the rear-view mirror, such as Loveless and Siamese Dream. Though these latter points of comparison may be 30 years old, the relationships among DIIV’s members evoke a new-found inspiration, whether it’s the airy harmonized vocals of Cole Smith and bassist Colin Caulfield, the gutsy guitar interplay between Smith and Bailey, or the rhythm section’s spritely but muscular propulsion. However, the inspiration doesn’t end there; according to a recent episode of the DIIV podcast, it was drummer Ben Newman who wrote the lyrics and vocal melody for mid-album highlight “Everyone Out.” Frog In Boiling Water is truly a four-headed beast, each member of the band intently focusing on the best way to bring each song to fruition.
Each of the ten songs offers an exciting new chapter during the album’s unfolding, and there are plenty of surprises to be found within each song, many featuring multiple interlinking sections, each with strong lead melodies and their own atmospheric character. “In Amber” is a heavy opener in the vein of much of Deceiver, but soon takes a left-turn into a long, dreamy mid-section akin to The Cure, who are also evoked on the jangly “Raining On Your Pillow” and the doomy “Little Birds.” There’s also a cheeky reference to MBV’s “I Only Said” in the outro of single “Brown Paper Bag,” and “Everyone Out” has a clear precursor in the chiming harmonics of Sonic Youth’s “Shadow Of A Doubt.” There’s even a nod back to Deceiver’s pounding opener “Horsehead” in the guitar line of “Frog In Boiling Water” before the chorus ascends vertiginously.
The most surprising inclusion, though, is the band’s incorporation of samples and tape loops, which weave their way through the guitars, bass, drums and vocals like ghosts. This is most apparent on stunning single “Soul-net,” with its stomping breakbeat and countless swirling layers, and “Everyone Out,” which conveys the feeling of being trapped in a confusing slipstream, the lyrics alluding to escaping a crumbling civilization in search of a new way forward. Another of the album’s more immediately gratifying tracks, “Somber the Drums,” ends with the sound of a cassette player being paused, but only after there have been multiple unconventional structural shifts, from lazer-like lead guitars to a middle section that feels like hurtling headlong through a black hole.
Despite the music’s dense layering and the overall feeling of frustration and confusion, Frog In Boiling Water thankfully leaves the listener with a feeling of hope and eventual redemption. Closer “Fender on the Freeway” unfolds like the promise of a new dawn, its interlocking guitar arpeggios forging a way forward, freed from simmering resentments.

Melvins + Unsane @ Webster Hall; April 29, 2012.
Unsane just dropped Wreck after five long painful years of waiting. You know what that means: new album, new tour.
They were one band I hoped to see live one day, and here’s my opportunity. In a rare instance, the band I’d come to see would be the openers, not the closers. Who got that night’s honor? Melvins. I never heard of them before, so I was going blind not knowing what to expect. I bought tickets to see Unsane, bottom line. Anything after that was a bonus.
I stayed in line outside the venue for a good 45 minutes before we’re allowed entry. I ended up getting the best standing-room spot possible: up front and center, right between the drum kits. It won’t get any better than that. It was a few minutes before Unsane started pouring out on to the stage. Here’s Chris Spencer ready to go. Dave Curran is all set. But…where’s Vincent Signorelli at? I’ve heard he suffered a bad injury that kept him from drumming tonight’s show. It’ll be Dale Crover taking over on drums tonight. Not complaining.
No one should expect the Unsane crowd to be the hard-knuckled, knock-down drag-out type. Far from it. The audience didn’t match the viciousness and filth of Unsane’s power as I expected. They were more relaxed and chill. Not one fan even started a shoving match. But, that didn’t matter to me. I’m here to experience. You’d know Spencer with those enraged eyes, clenched teeth, and maddening expression on his face. He’s even lifting up his guitar to twist its horn during the essential chords. That’s the nature of Unsane; usually a tough, painful, and injurious aggression of sound. Curran pushed through and kept it going on bass to carry its rugged sounds, and Crover did great as Signorelli’s temporary sit-in.
“Stuck” became one of my favorites on the newly-released Wreck due to the subject of desperate, hopeless addiction which reminded me of a friend of mine. It became one of Unsane’s “ballads” if you dare call it that. Not to say that it didn’t deliver any jarring, anguished, and mournful riffs that burned like a barn fire. They also covered “Ha Ha Ha” from one of their punk influences Flipper, and that would end Wreck. Did they play any other classic material? You bet. Spencer did whip out the harmonica for “Alleged” off Scattered, Smothered, And Covered. On that note, no one would expect Unsane not to play “Scrape” in their home town, thus making us New Yorkers proud. It was undoubtedly the shortest set I’ve experienced, but my ‘thank-you’ to one of my all-time favorites has been paid.
It took a while before Melvins took the stage. When they did, I was baffled. Who is this person with the huge grey kinky hair all dressed up like he traveled light-years from the cosmos to be here? It’s fucking Roger “King Buzzo” Osborne (no relation to Ozzy or that old crow Sharon, thank the Lord). Dale Crover is ready to go on drums, and Coady Willis gets situated at drum kit #2. On the right was Big Business’ Jared Warren; this berserker Viking warrior of bass player.
They must’ve played every card in the deck because they went all over the place. They ignited their set with “Dog Island” to psych things up and shot right off onto “Hung Bunny” for some thick sludgy stuff. They showed their fun side and sense of humor. King Buzzo would lead the charge with “Evil New War God”, which segued right into Crover and Willis dueling it out on “Water Glass”.
It was amazing how on “A Really Long Wait” that they perfectly balanced and stabilized their sound to a floating mass. They bended, twisted, and stretched their sludgy riffs on “A Growing Disgust”. One of their high moments came in the form of a Wipers cover (“Youth Of America”) where Melvins totally went bonkers and took all their time to run through.
It all culminated into “The Bit”, a trudging 12+ minute kiss goodbye that would seal the deal for tonight. Buzzo hangs his guitar up and called it a night as while they laid down some more monstrous riffs, leaving it up to drummers Crover and Willis one final go before their standing ovation. Warren turns on Big Business mode and takes over for vocals. He’s left on stage as the last man standing; firing out the final buzzsaws and drones to close the night out.
**********
You remember me saying that I had no idea what the Melvins’ legacy was. Damn. Now I know.
Melvins were the first band I ever realized to be an adventure because that’s how it felt for me. My mind took off, turned on autopilot, and let it fly. It was all full-on dynamics, never straightforward nor formulaic. That’s the gauge in knowing how great, knowledgable, and talented an artist is. You wouldn’t want to feel cheated either just standing there or just going with the motions because you would support them anyway.
I can count on one hand all the artists who impressed me on first sight. It works best when you don’t even know that the band existed. Meshuggah came to New York City with Ministry and turned Irving Plaza into chaos. The lack of crowd control that they enabled convinced me more than enough to get my hands on Obzen. Melvins had about 30 years of putting out albums and touring, and made the best of every minute. If I was a musician, I would take great strides to write and run through ideas as much as I can. As much as I like the countless bands who have some sort of formula and leave it up to their sound, sometimes you discover bands who run on structure and create many more possibilities for what can happen in the future.
**********
Believe it or not, the ‘bonuses’ still came rolling in. I arrive home after a long train ride and log on to my laptop to see if Unsane thanked us for being there. That I don’t remember, but reaching back, I don’t think they ever did. Our own skipped over us. What in the fuck? Reaching further was something I found to fuel the continuous fire of Unsane’s legacy. Curran and Jim Paradise just came out with a new project. They morphed The J.J. Paradise Players Club into Pigs, and their debut You Ruin Everything was now out in the wild. As my team lead always use to say: “yeah! Let’s keep the fire going!”

The Storm Has Arrived: High on Fire w/ ZETA & High Command Live at The Senate
Grammy award-winning High on Fire is a doom/heavy/stoner/thrash/sludge metal band from Oakland, CA. which formed in 1998 after frontman Matt Pike’s former band Sleep took on a hiatus. High on Fire now consists of Pike (guitar/vocals), Jeff Matz (bass), and Coady Willis (drums). High on Fire has released nine (9) LPs, three (3) Live albums, two (2) EPs, four (4) Splits, ten (10) music videos, and four (4) singles. Their latest release, Cometh the Storm, was released on April 19th, 2024, on MNRK Heavy. Since its release, Cometh the Storm has charted high across the board with the music industry: #5 Current Rock Album, #1 Record label Independent Current Album, #3 Current Hard Music Album, #10 Current Digital Album, and #11 Digital Albums just to highlight a select few. As a longtime fan of High on Fire, Cometh the Storm is moving up to the Top 3 in my favorite albums by High on Fire. Snakes for the Devine (2010) and Blessed Black Wings (2005) would round out my Top 3 albums by High on Fire.
High on Fire announced via their socials on March 19th that they would tour in support of their latest release, and I noticed that The Senate in Columbia, S.C. made the cut for this tour. For opening support, High on Fire enlisted the help of High Command and ZETA. This would be my first time attending a show, and for that matter doing photography at this venue in Columbia, S.C. Now that I think about it, High on Fire would be my first show doing photography in the state of South Carolina. Truthfully, I know I am very fortunate to have this opportunity, and want to do my utmost best!
High Command is a thrash metal/crossover/hardcore punk band from Worcester, MA. that formed in 2016. High Command consists of Kevin Fitzgerald (vocals), Chris Berg (bass), Ryan McArdle (guitar), Razzle (guitar), and Ryan Pitz (drums). They have released two (2) LPs, two (2) EPs, one (1) split video, and one (1) Demo. They are currently signed to Southern Lord Recordings and their latest release is entitled Eclipse of the Dual Moons (2022). I first listened to High Command on the Bandcamp app when they were announced at tour mates. “Merciless Steel” off Beyond the Wall of Desolation and “Imposing Hammers of Cold Sorcery” off Eclipse of the Dual Moons were played during this set so I was happy to hear a few of my favorite tracks from High Command performed live. Their set was just as vicious and full of power as I expected from streaming their music before the show. I hope to see High Command later down the road during one of their headline tours or as opening support for another wicked band.
Check out High Command’s setlist from the second night of this tour below:
· “Omniscient Flail of Infamy”
· “Merciless Steel”
· “Everlasting Torment”
· “Fortified by Bloodshed”
· “Sword of Wisdom”
· “Imposing Hammers of Cold Sorcery”
· “Impaled Upon the Gates”
· “Eclipse of the Dual Moons”
· “Inexorable Darkness”
Show High Command some support and head to their Official Bandcamp page today to grab some merchandise.
Zeta is a Venezuelan post-rock band that was founded in 2003 in Lecheria. Zeta consists of founding members Juan Chi (multiple instruments/vocals) and Dani Debuto (multiple instruments/vocals) with Chino Sandoval (drums) and Antonio Pereira (bass). Zeta has released six (6) LPs, two (2) Live albums, one (1) EP, and two (2) cassettes. I knew that Zeta performed at Grantski Records in Augusta, GA. a few months back, and I knew I should have made that show. Instant FOMO. I knew Zeta and how great this band would be live. But I had no clue of the magnitude until I saw Zeta perform at The Senate. Phenomenal musicianship with an electrifying performance!
You can view Zeta’s setlist from The Senate below:
· “Intro”
· “II Afrontar”
· “III Sufrir”
· “IV Perder”
· “Yo el peor de todos (somos cosmos) XXV”
· “V Completar”
· “La flor del tiempo”
· “VII Magia infinita”
Check out ZETA‘s Official Bandcamp page today and show them some love!
Closing out the evening, High on Fire took the stage at The Senate with a thunderous roar from the pumped-up crowd in attendance. After being warmed up with both High Command and Zeta, you could see the excitement in the crowd’s faces as “Karanlik Yol” played over the venue’s loudspeakers. You could almost feel the anticipation as the crowd wondered what song would kick off their set. In honor of their new release and the first single from Cometh the Storm, the introduction to “Burning Down” riled up the crowd as this was the second time that High on Fire has played this song (or any song off the new album) live for their fans. Trust me when I say, that “Burning Down” was just as ferocious live and left a lasting impression on me. I was happy to see “Come Down Hessian”, “Rumors of War”, “Carcosa”, “Fury Whip”, and one of my all-time favorite High on Fire songs “Snakes for the Divine” on the setlist for this tour.
You can check out High on Fire’s setlist from the second stop of their tour at The Senate in Columbia, SC. below:·
· “Karanlik Yol” (Intro)
· “Burning Down” (2nd time playing live)
· “Turk”
· “Fertile Green”
· “Hung, Drawn, and Quartered”
· “Last”
· “Come Down Hessian”
· “Cometh The Storm” (2nd time playing live)
· “Rumors of War”
· “Carcosa”
· “Fury Whip”

Thursday April 25th!
Adaline, Canadian indie pop songwriter ~ sensation performs in Baltimore joined by local favorites Gay Baseball & Bloody Crying Twinks!
~
Queer alt-pop artist Adaline plays at the Crown Baltimore in support of her new record "Hymnal"! Featured in ground-breaking tv shows such as Wynona Earp and Grey's Anatomy (for real!), this queer singer songwriter weaves a haunting narrative of a stifled upbringing in conservative evangelism between belt-your-heart-out choruses, angst-ridden soliloquy, and perfectly pop ballads of love, loss and catharsis. Her new album, HYMNAL, recorded by Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grizzly Bear), features a unique blend of tailor-made powerhouse pop tracks and swiftly moves through alternative, lo-fi & retro vibe, featuring dramatic strings hits, aggressively 80s FM synth and understated drums reminiscent of a hammond organ in a church basement.

EKKSTACY Shares Double Single “Shutting Me Out” / “Goo Lagoon”
EKKSTACY shares his captivating new singles “shutting me out” and “goo lagoon” with his fresh blend of shoegaze indie pop-rock. The songs are instantly catchy and playful. Hear and read more below: Following the announcement of his forthcoming self-titled album, EKKSTACY shares his second wave of singles with “shutting me out” / “goo lagoon.” These tracks serve as a prelude to the album scheduled for release on January 19, 2024, alongside his previous pair of singles, "i can't find anyone” and the standout track “bella,” which EKKSTACY released a Jason Nocito-directed video for starring Lumia Nocito last week. In this emotional one-two punch, EKKSTACY explores a fresh sonic direction, signaling a pivotal moment in his career. The songs delve into the personal experiences and rhythms of his life over the past two years that informed this album, touching on themes of solitude and finding solace in being constantly on the move. Reflecting on the tracks, EKKSTACY shares: "I remember recording ‘goo lagoon’ in my hotel room quite some time ago. I never travel with my instruments but for some reason I happened to have my guitar in LA that day. This is my favorite song on the album. I started surfing recently and this song is cool to listen to before I go to the beach. All my friends love this one." Sonically, it's fitting that this third body of work from EKKSTACY is a self-titled album. It's an autobiographical reflection on his life as a musician and the highs and lows of the solitude that comes with creating art and touring. Recorded with frequent collaborators Mangetsu and Apob between long stints on tour and festival plays over the course of the last two years, including his Lollapalooza debut earlier this year, EKKSTACY is the most dynamic version of the raw and frantic sound he first emerged onto the scene with on widely-celebrated debut NEGATIVE and breakout single "i walk this earth all by myself." He's continued to hone that sound alongside Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands, The Drums, etc), who mixed his new self-titled LP and his previous album Misery. His songwriting is resolutely solemn, but there's a maturity behind the meandering thoughts in his head that blossomed into powerful post-punk, jangly surf-rock, and big, brash shoegaze moments on EKKSTACY. Future Islands Announce New Album, Share Video for New Song “The Tower”: Watch
People Who Aren’t There Anymore, the group’s first studio LP since 2020, is coming in January
Future Islands have announced their new album, People Who Aren’t There Anymore. It’s coming January 26 via 4AD. It features a number of recent singles, including “Deep in the Night,” “King of Sweden,” and “Peach.” Today, they’re back with “The Tower,” which has a new video directed by Jonathan van Tulleken, who worked with the band’s Samuel T. Herring on the Apple TV series The Changeling. Watch the video below.
“Anyone who’s seen Sam on stage shape shift with his whole body and voice from heart wrenchingly tender to fantastically ferocious knows that he is a truly, magnetic, performer,” van Tulleken said in a statement. “This was no small reason why he was cast for a role in The Changeling where he plays a complex character who appears to be one thing whilst actually another. It was a role that would be no easy task for even the most seasoned actor but Sam, applying all his stage craft, charisma, smarts and natural empathy, absolutely nailed it producing a riveting performance. I loved working with someone who came to acting via this persona they had built in their music.”
People Who Aren’t There Anymore follows Future Islands’ 2020 studio LP, As Long as You Are. Steve Wright co-produced the new album with the band, and he mixed it with Chris Coady, who produced Future Islands’ landmark 2014 album, Singles.

Music like Beach House | Similar Artists Playlist One of the finest dream pop groups of the 2000s and 2010s, Beach House is the duo of vocalist/keyboardist Victoria Legrand and guitarist Alex Scally. Over the years, Beach House moved from the charmingly lo-fi sound of early Carpark releases like 2006's self-titled debut to the ethereal perfection of Sub Pop efforts such as 2012's Bloom, but they always focused on hypnotic melodies and Legrand's velvety voice. Legrand and Scally met in Baltimore's indie rock scene and formed Beach House in 2004. They began releasing songs soon after, including "Apple Orchard," which appeared on Pitchfork's Infinite Mixtape MP3 series in August 2006. That October, the duo released their self-titled debut album, which drew comparisons to Nico and Mazzy Star, on Carpark. Early in 2007, Beach House recorded their second album in two months at Lord Baltimore Studio; the results were the fuller-sounding Devotion, which arrived on Carpark in 2008. Following a lengthy tour, Scally and Legrand worked with producer Chris Coady on their Sub Pop debut Teen Dream. Released in early 2010, the album continued to refine the duo's sound, and debuted in the Top 50 of the Billboard 200.
