Green apple, pear, white flowers and hints of quinine join a classic citrus nose, smothered in textbook bath powder. Follows through to tangy lemon-lime palate which finished a fraction warm. Appears less edgy or exuberant than a young taut Clare due to bottle age. Wild ferment and 6 months worth of lees aging explain the greater volume and textural richness. Versatile. — ★★★

- pour and a half of the botanist with mediterranean fever tree, grapefruit slice preferable but will settle for orange (or standard gin mare with charred rosemary)
- literally any buttery riesling from the clare valley
i miss drinking a lot but its absence has allowed me to work on myself, my relationship with alcohol, and really massage the kinks in my life without a crutch. i genuinely enjoy the taste, the smell/s, the art form. i like the way it makes me feel without the nuance of escapism. there is simply nowhere to hide in sobriety! and i enjoy making/drinking mocktails, especially at restaurants. the experience is still pleasurable which should be the idea of ~drinking~ and connecting anyway, regardless of alcohol content.

Giới thiệu về nho Riesling Riesling là giống nho trắng có nguồn gốc từ châu thổ sông Rhine - nơi khởi nguồn của nền văn minh Âu châu. Tên gọi “Rießlingen” được lặp lại trong nhiều tài liệu khác cùng thời.
Cách viết “Riesling” lần đầu tiên xuất hiện vào năm 1552 khi được đề cập đến trong cuốn thảo dược Latin của Hieronymus Bock. Ở thung lũng Wachau ở Áo, người ta còn phát hiện được một dòng suối nhỏ và vườn nho cùng được gọi là Ritzling - cái tên được người dân địa phương đã đặt cho Riesling. Tuy nhiên, dường như không có bằng chứng nào chứng minh những cái tên này chắc chắn đang ám chỉ nho Riesling chúng ta thấy ngày nay.
Phong cách sản xuất rượu vang Riesling phổ biến nhất hiện nay
Rượu vang nho Riesling ủ sồi Nếu là một tín đồ chân chính của rượu Riesling, bạn sẽ cảm nhận rõ rệt mùi thơm độc đáo của xăng trong các chai Riesling trên thị trường. Note hương khá lạ lẫm với nhiều người và thường được ví như mùi dầu hỏa, dầu nhớt hoặc cao su. Phải đến gần đây, khi các chuyên gia đưa ra nhiều đánh giá tích cực hơn về chúng, rượu Riesling lão hóa kĩ đã có chỗ đứng hơn trên thị trường rượu Đức.
Rượu nho Riesling Late Harvest Riesling Late Harvest được mệnh danh là dòng vang đắt đỏ nhất được lên men từ nho Riesling và thường cũng là một trong những chai rượu đắt đỏ bậc nhất hành tinh. Phong cách rượu Late Harvest chủ yếu là để sản xuất ra những chai vang tráng miệng với hương vị ngọt đậm. Phía nhà sản xuất sẽ để trái nho trên cây mà không thu hoạch khi đến độ chín mọng như thường lệ. Họ tận dụng nấm Noble Bot để phần thịt nho bay hơi bớt nước hoặc bằng cách đông đá và đưa vào máy ép để loại bỏ nước trong trường hợp sản xuất vang đá - Ice Wine. Từ đây, họ thu được chiết xuất nho đậm đặc và lý tưởng cho sản xuất vang ngọt.
Nhờ có quá trình này, tiềm năng lão hóa của loại vang trắng này trở nên bất bại và kéo dài đáng kể. Ngày nay, việc sử dụng Noble Rot và phong cách rượu vang Late Harvest được sử dụng ở rất nhiều vùng trồng nho như Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, Eden Valley ở phía Nam Úc. Nhưng vì sở hữu bí quyết Noble Rot nên không rượu vang ở đâu ngon như vang Late Harvest của người Đức.

Unlike Sauvignon’s European versions, these wines are brimming with tropical fruit redolent of passion fruit, lychee and kiwi, always with refreshing acidity. Enjoy Sauvignon Blanc with fresh cheese and seafood. For dry white wine, Australian white wine has you covered.

Riesling
Riesling is the queen of cold-climate white grapes; it's easy to see why it thrives in Germany and Austria. Well, Australian grape growers have found great spots for growing the late-ripening and aromatic variety as well. The result is an elegant wine with floral and petrol aromas, often with hints of ripe peaches and mango. The sweetness in these wines may vary, so read the label carefully.
Riesling is particularly compatible with white meat, including pork and veal. It can be a great partner for spicy food like curries, too. Riesling is a wonderful summer sipper, and it’s easy to enjoy on its own as well.

Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Tasmania, Western Australia.

Many other white varietals show promising results in Australia, including Vermentino, Pinot Gris, Fiano, Muscat and others.
Australian Red Wine
Although Australian white wines are up there with the best in the world, the country is best known for its reds. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are the two most planted grapes in Australia and make almost half of the vineyards. Both grapes arrived in the country in the 1830s at the hands of the “Father of Wine Australia”, James Busby. Today, producers make the most acclaimed wines in the country with one of these two grapes, but there are others. Let’s get to know them.
Shiraz
Shiraz, AKA Syrah, is a red grape from the Rhône Valley, France. The rustic grape produces big and bold red wines with ripe fruit aromas and hints of freshly cracked black pepper and chocolate.
Shiraz is also commonly blended with Grenache and Mataro (Mourvedre) in the now-famous GSM blend, where Grenache plays first fiddle. These wines are complex but approachable and offer a wide range of fruit, herb and spice aromas.
Australian Shiraz is best enjoyed with hearty stews, meat pies, grilled red meat, barbecue, roasts, goat and lamb.

Barossa Valley, Margaret River, Hunter Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted grape globally and the second most popular in Australia. There’s no doubt the noble Bordelaise varietal produces age-worthy and structured wines across the country. You can find wines made 100% with Cabernet Sauvignon everywhere and spectacular blends, most likely Cabernet-Merlot and Cabernet-Shiraz.
Cabernet Sauvignon wines are an excellent match for thick, fatty steaks, especially rib eyes and strip steaks. Cabernet will also shine with meaty stews, casseroles and semi-hard cheese.
Regions for Australian Cabernet Sauvignon:
Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, Margaret River, Victoria.

Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is not amongst the most planted red grapes in Australia, not because producers don’t want to grow it, but because the thin-skinned Burgundian grape is tough to grow and only thrives in the coldest climates.
Pinot Noir produces elegant, almost silky red wines with elevated acidity and fruit purity on the nose and palate. These sensual wines pair best with mushroom dishes, oily fish like salmon and tuna, and roasted poultry. Pinot Noir is also often used to make pretty rosé wine.
Regions for Australian Pinot Noir:
Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley, Tasmania, Adelaide Hills.

Other Australian Red Grapes
There are dozens of other red grapes in Australia, although not nearly as popular as those described above. Tempranillo is worthy of a special mention, and it’s doing great in Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Heathcote and Margaret River.
Merlot, Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Petit Sirah (Durif) and many other grapes are worth seeking out, and they’re climbing the popularity ranks at an impressive pace.

Three days in and this is my first post! Alan and Jess are moving to Perth to start a new chapter and Jess’ father (also Alan) and I are driving over with them.
Day 1 ended at Murray Bridge in South Australia and Day 2 at Streaky Bay. Tonight we are at Border Village, just steps from the quarantine station on the WA border and a giant kangaroo - and in a time warp that a Dr Who scriptwriter would be proud of. This roadhouse stop is 45 minutes behind WA and 45 ahead of SA. That means that the time zone we are in is set to the quarter hour. This only affects a stretch of 340 kilometres along the Eyre Highway and is very rare. Apparently this came about as the result of a compromise back in the days when the Eucla Telegraph station was operational. It took an hour and a half to pass messages between each capital city so they split the difference. We have racked up 1964 kms - only 1440 to go.
The Murray Bridge leg is a blur to me now. Our first pitstop was in Ararat, our second at Nhill and we arrived at our destination just in time to see the old one-lane bridge we were crossing and find our way to the hotel bar before the sun went down. Lured by a river view and the idea of stretching our legs we trekked cross country to the Community Club. No lights on the river unfortunately but the food didn’t disappoint. The raffle draw was a highlight also. Winners spun a wheel to claim their prize, which more often than not landed on a stubby holder or a $5 voucher. This procession of winners looked like they knew what to expect. We were up and out of the Bridgeport Motel the next morning before daylight to get some kms on the board.
The Gawler bakery provided a surprisingly good breakfast. Driving though the Clare Valley brought back happy memories of the cycling David and I did along the Riesling Rail Trail some years ago. Everything was just where we left it, including the Sunrise Hotel. We drove alongside the Ghan railway line into the Spencer Gulf, stopping for lunch at a little shop in the city centre that promised home cooked meals. One of the great things about travelling is that eventually every experience ends up reminding you of something else. This little place that looked more like someone’s house than a cafe, reminded me of a restaurant David and I stumbled upon in Portugal that really was someone’s lounge room. Despite not being able to read any of the items on the menu, we ended up with the best chicken and chips we had ever had.
Streaky Bay came into view not a minute too soon for Al and I. Not as salubrious as the Bridgeport but the colonial looking West End hotel facing the bay had everything we needed, including a continental breakfast the next morning after a stroll along the pier at sunrise. Streaky Bay, home of the Wirangu people, is a coastal town on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia just off the Flinders Highway. It is the centre of an agricultural district with established fishing and tourism industries. The streaks Matthew Flinders saw in the water when he named it are now thought to be the result of oils released by certain species of seaweed in the bay. Dinner at Drift was the best so far. It had to be as it started with a dozen oysters. As elsewhere on the Eyre Peninsula, Streaky Bay and nearby Elliston were the scene of some terrible conflicts with Aboriginal people.
We had less driving to do today so allowed ourselves the luxury of a bowl of coco pops and a sunrise (in reverse order) before hitting the road. Streaky Bay was asleep when we bought the makings of lunch to enjoy when the opportunity arose. Fortunately Jess and her dad found a turn off to the coast and with some strategic manoeuvring we managed to create some tasty and rustic ham cheese and salad rolls (if you count cucumber as a salad). The expanse of the Great Australian Bight was something to see. Limestone rock underneath us and dainty little pig-face and leptospermum plants emerging from lesser trod sandy paths. Very lovely. On the Eastern end of the Nullarbor today, we experienced more of the short sharp rains that seemed to be the handiwork of just one single cloud, soon outrun by the Corolla doing 110.
Tomorrow we head for Norseman.

It’s felt kind of autumnal all day so I found myself in an Aussie Shiraz kind of mood (which admittedly happens all year round but still).... the wines of @jimbarrywines have been an ever present in my wine life for as long as I can remember. The Florita Riesling has long been one of my favourite white wines and we typically have a McRae Wood Shiraz as a special treat now and then. This Lodge Hill Shiraz is a fantastic value at various places in the U.K. around £10-£12. It’s from high altitude in the Clare Valley giving it a nice blend of elegance and punch. Basket pressed with ferment finishing off in barrel / tank. Raw Power fruit was machine harvested early morning with whole berry ferment in 10 ton open top concrete fermenters with twice daily pump-overs. Vintage commenced Feb 13 with the ‘Plains shiraz, fruit came thick and fast over the next four weeks in a compact crushing season. Our Adelaide Plains and Mt Lofty Ranges vineyards really stood up to the dry conditons, yields were approx 15% down, quality was up and no instance of disease, damaged or stressed fruit were recorded. In terms of quality it will rate extremely high, in terms of fruit timing it produced some of our earliest picking on record, in terms of weather conditions one of the driest and coolest for a long time. Vintage/Winemaking Notes Across the board 2013 was an outstanding vintage in many ways.
