Hogwarts As A School
Tumblr media
i saw someone else do this and our drs are vastly different in how hogwarts schooling is ran so i thought i’d post my version. i’ve been shifting to Hogwarts in a few different eras for years now and this is how school has always ran for me. i shift to a university style hogwarts btw, first 5 years are like undergrad, and then you can leave after 5th year if you don’t need it for your work. 6th and 7th years are the equivalent of grad school.
School Size
hogwarts is much smaller than many of you think
the castle itself is massive but the population is quite small
there’s about 280 students at Hogwarts give or take some. 10ish students per house, per year. my graduation class at hogwarts in 38 in my golden trio dr, and 45 in my marauders dr
the wizarding population of the uk is much smaller than you’d think it is
Classes
All classes are 2 times per week minus astronomy
astronomy is at midnight or later on different days for each year. Mondays are 2nd years, Tuesday is 3rd years, Wednesday is 1st years (as per the first book) Thursdays are 4th years, 5th years are Wednesdays at 1 am, 6th years are Tuesdays at 1am, 7th years are Mondays at 1am
classes start at 9am Monday through Friday and last class ends at 3pm
for your first two years, you don’t have any electives (per the books) so you have a lot more free time. out of 20 class slots (minus astronomy time) 13 are taking up for 1st years, and 12 for 2nd years, Flying being the extra class for 1st years
when your 3rd year comes, you must take at least 2 electives, but you can take up to 4 without needing a time turner like Hermiome in the 3rd book. 6 core classes plus 4 electives taking up all 20 class slots. (i am doing this in my 5th year and it’s HELL. but i want the OWLs so i suffer)
Testing
for final exams every year each class has a written test where you go over your theoretical knowledge of magic, and a practical test where you get to test the skills you’ve learned over the semester.
exams are taken twice a year in december and june with mid terms in october and march
OWLs are taken at the end of your 5th year, and then you take NEWTs at the end of your 6th year. you have to test at a certain level for each class to be able to take OWL/NEWT level classes
General Things
breakfast is from 7am to 8:30, lunch is from 12pm to 12:45, dinner is from 6 to 7:30
uniforms do not have to be worn for meals unless there is a special event
you also do not have to sit out your house table unless there is a special event
Sports/Clubs
club sign ups are always the second weekend back so around the middle of September
you can sign up for as many clubs as you like as long as you can balance them
you can also sign up for things like study groups or house study halls, Ravenclaw house study is on Wednesday after classes from 3:30 to 5:30
Quidditch try outs are always at the beginning of October, and the season starts the first weekend in November.
Canonically there’s only about 6 games of quidditch but that’s dumb so there’s quidditch most saturdays November to April with the games starting at around 10am
thats everything i can think of right now! if you have any questions feel free to send me an ask!

Hattie Canty (June 10, 1933 – July 12, 2012) was elected president of the Las Vegas Hotel and Culinary Workers Union Local 226, a position that enabled her to significantly improve the standard of living for tens of thousands of workers in Las Vegas’s booming hotel and casino industry.
She moved to Las Vegas in 1961 where her husband worked in construction until his untimely death in 1975. With ten children, she joined the Culinary Union in hopes of securing a decent salary as a hotel maid. She made ends meet by cleaning rooms at the Maxim Hotel and Casino. Her perseverance helped her to overcome lingering racism in the hotel casino industry. Union members hired her to the executive board and she was promoted to a uniform attendant.
Professional organizers from the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union saw in her the dedication and leadership skills needed to secure higher wages and respectable benefits for workers in Las Vegas’s thriving gaming and tourism industry. She thrust herself into the limelight by leading a series of highly publicized strikes.
Following a successful strike of the famous Binion’s Horseshoe Hotel and Casino, she and the Culinary Union set their sights on the staunchly anti-union New Frontier Hotel and Gambling Hall. The union mounted one of the longest strikes in American history, an effort that cost the owner of the New Frontier, an estimated one billion dollars when she sold the property.
Her unifying presence helped dissolve racial animosities in the ethnically diverse union, convincing members that solidarity in labor organization could bring about tangible gains. Maids and other hotel employees in Las Vegas could earn more than double the average wage of service workers in other cities. She organized a job training program for new members, Unionized hotel workers in Las Vegas at the start of the twenty-first century could buy homes, send their children to college, and live a middle-class lifestyle. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Chloe Simon at MMFA:
After President-elect Donald Trump selected venture capitalist Sriram Krishnan as his senior policy adviser for artificial intelligence in December and Trump ally Laura Loomer publicly criticized Krishnan for his position on immigration, an intense debate erupted in MAGA world over the H-1B visa program. Some right-wing media figures defended the program, arguing that H-1B visas are “not enough” to replace American workers or pointing out that less than 1% of the “high-skilled tech workforce” are visa holders. Others criticized the program as a “total and complete scam” or even the replacement of “White Americans through legal loopholes.”
Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as AI adviser sparked controversy within MAGA media
In December 2024, infighting erupted in right-wing media over the H-1B visa program following Donald Trump’s selection of venture capitalist Sriram Krishnan as senior policy adviser for artificial intelligence. According to The Washington Post, right-wing activist and podcaster Laura Loomer criticized Krishnan over his support for “making it easier for skilled foreign workers to come to the United States” and the tech industry’s dependency on H-1B visas. This sparked Trump adviser Elon Musk to advocate for the visa program, claiming that the “reason I’m in America along with so many critical people who built SpaceX, Tesla and hundreds of other companies that made America strong is because of H1B.” Former GOP presidential candidate and current Trump adviser Vivek Ramaswamy initially expressed support for the visa program as well, claiming that “a culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian [the top student in a class], will not produce the best engineers.” He later clarified, however, that he believes “the H-1B system is badly broken & should be replaced.” [The Washington Post, 12/30/24; The American Prospect, 1/2/25; Business Insider, 12/31/24; BBC, 12/28/24; The Independent, 12/26/24]
After Musk advocated for the visas, Trump expressed his own support for the program in apparent contradiction of his previous position. Trump stated, “I didn't change my mind. I've always felt we have to have the most competent people in our country, and we need competent people.” He further emphasized the need for “smart people coming into our country.” During his 2016 presidential campaign, however, Trump advocated for the complete elimination of the H-1B program, and his administration suspended H-1B visas in 2020. [Newsweek, 12/31/24; MSNBC, 1/2/25]
MAGA-aligned media pundits are fighting over H1-B Visas.

4 Lone Wolf
Tumblr media
Previous Chapter
"Alright, beautiful, now moving swiftly along." The lieutenant said, nodding to the personnel near the door to turn the lights off. They did so and closed the blinds to prepare us for a film. My eyes adjusted to the darkness quickly and I pulled out a small pocket-sized notebook just in case it would be required for notes. Unlike Maverick I took pride in my studies and enjoyed the opportunity for learning.
"During Korea, the Navy kill ratio was 12 to one. We shot down 12 of their jets for every one of ours. During Vietnam, that ratio fell to three to one. Our pilots became dependent upon missiles, they had lost some of their dogfighting skills. Top Gun was created to teach ACM, air combat maneuvering. Dogfighting, if you will. At the end of Vietnam, that ratio was back up to 12 to one." The lecture he gave was quick, but he showed examples of dogfighting on the small TV at the front of the classroom. I smiled knowing that this was what we were going to be perfecting here with the program.
"Blinds, please. Now I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our commanding officer at Top Gun. The very first man to win the Top Gun trophy. You will not find a finer fighter pilot anywhere in the world. Commander Mike Metcalf. Callsign, Viper." The doors we had come through not 30 minutes ago reopened to reveal a grizzled officer probably in his mid-50s by now. He walked through the aisle looking at every one of us with an intensity that I couldn't describe. When he got to the front, he turned towards us.
"Gentlemen," He paused looking directly at Doe and I.
"And ladies… I apologize, it is the first time we have had women in this program. Though I'm certain you will live up to your callsigns." He continued with a bit of discontent in his tone. I actively stopped my jaw from dropping at his remark. I had been expecting this, but not from a commander. Well, it was no real surprise to me that we would have to prove ourselves to everyone who did not want us here. It was a brand-new concept for many of the old command.
"All of you are the top one percent of all naval aviators, the elite, the best of the best, otherwise you wouldn't be here. We'll make you better. You'll fly at least two combat missions a day, attend classes in between, and receive evaluations of your performance."
"Top Gun is not an opportunity to slack off, get drunk, and go on romantic outings." He added as he saw Iceman grinning ear to ear. The smile was quickly wiped from his face, his head snapping back to his notes as his fingers twirled the pen he held.
"It is an opportunity, that your commanding officers thought you fit to journey on. Now, in each combat sequence, you're going to meet a different challenge. Every encounter is going to be much more difficult. We're going to teach you to fly the F-14 right to the edge of the envelope. Faster than you've ever flown before and more dangerous. Now, we don't make policy here, gentlemen, elected officials, and civilians do that. We are the instruments of that policy." He paused, I saw Maverick look at Iceman and they locked eyes, glaring at each other.
"And although we are not at war, we must always act as though we are at war." I'm sure he felt he made his point among everyone present as he started walking again towards the back of the room. I turned to face where he was.
"What are you doing?" Goose leaned over to Maverick asking him the question in a whispered tone. I rolled my eyes knowing this could only lead to my annoyance growing.
"The tip of the spear." Viper continued.
"I'm just wondering who's the best," Maverick answered Goose's question with an arrogant remark.
"In case some of you wonder who the best is, here, they're up here on this plaque on the wall. The best driver and his RIO from each class has his name on it." Viper turned back around facing the front and walking towards the whiteboard. He had no doubt heard Maverick's question and answered it amused.
"And they have the option to come back here to be Top Gun instructors. You think your name's going to be on that plaque?" He turned to face Maverick who was tracking him delicately with his eyes now, no longer distracted.
"Yes sir." He answered him quite confidently.
"That's pretty arrogant considering the company you're in," Viper replied to him, gesturing around the room at all the other pilots that were now in competition with each other.
"Yes sir." He said again looking briefly down towards the floor and back up to Viper.
"I like that in a pilot," Viper said, a trace of a smile on his face.
"Remember when it's over out there, we're all on the same team. Gentlemen this school is about combat. There are no points for second place. Dismissed." He said finishing his monologue, and letting us go about our business. I gathered my things again, putting my notebook and pen away in my front pocket. I got up quickly ready to leave the room with Doe right behind me. Maverick and Goose following, I couldn't stand the testosterone that was practically oozing from these feral pre-pubescent males.
"The plaque for the alternates is down in the ladies' room." Iceman joked with everyone, Goose let out a hysterical fake laugh. I continued forward not wanting to stay and came up with a witty reply. I let out a breath when I exited the room standing off to the side with Doe as we waited for Maverick and Goose.
"Oh Jesus, oh you kill me, you really do. But watch out for Reaper, man, she'll put you down fast and hard. Make no mistake, these ladies have balls bigger than you've got hanging between your legs." Goose told Iceman and the others, who immediately quieted upon hearing his remark. When Maverick and Goose walked out they immediately started leading the way. I was almost positive that Stinger had put in our applications for housing ahead of us leaving the ship.
"So where are we heading?" I asked the two men ahead of us.
"Stinger pulled some strings and got us a house we can occupy for the months that we're here. Seems like we'll all be together since he couldn't find two separate houses. It's 4 bedrooms and 2 baths so we all get our own room. He specifically mentioned no funny business, Mav." Goose replied to me, calling Maverick out. Maverick let out a light-hearted laugh shaking his head as we traversed one of the parking lot keys in hand. He walked up to a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle, sticking the key in the ignition. I watched as Maverick loaded his bags to the back of it, securing them down tightly so they wouldn't budge.
"You bastard, you had your bike delivered?" Goose asked him.
"That I did, you jealous?" He asked him, as he retrieved his aviator sunglasses and put them on. Goose simply stood there in awe of his friend and retrieved his own keys clicking the button to reveal his car a couple of rows away.
"Sounds amazing." I smiled happily as Maverick started the engine of the bike.
"You want a ride?" He asked me pleasantly surprised I had taken an interest in his mode of transportation. I nodded but stopped myself.
"I would, but let's get back to the house first, and then we'll talk about that later… Maybe you can take me down to the coast?" I asked him, just wanting to get to the house and relax for a bit. I left his side and went back towards Goose and Doe. We walked to Goose's 1985 Ford Bronco. When he unlocked it I opened the door and looked inside, I immediately wondered if I had made the right decision, there was not much room in the back for me.
"Goose, did Stinger get me a car? I can't help but notice there's no room for me." I told him, he smiled at me and took out another set of keys from his backpack throwing them to me. I caught them with ease.
"The arrangement had been made to have your Corvette brought out." He said, I smiled pushing the button to locate the car. It was a few spaces over from Goose's. I tried to contain my excitement upon seeing the car again. It was a sleek black model that I loved dearly and had in storage because I didn't need to use it much because I flew planes for a living. But it got me around in style, that's why I bought it.
"I'll follow you and Maverick over," I asked Goose but expressed it as a statement. He nodded as he and Doe entered his car.
I threw my things inside and got in, started the engine, and let the car warm up. I saw Maverick pull out of his spot and wait for all of us to get the show on the road, I pulled out next to him and Goose was behind me. I smiled as I shifted, and we got out onto the highway that led away from the base. I saw Maverick wanted to weave in and out of traffic so I let Goose in front of me so he could lead me instead. Once he got in front of me it was a very smooth ride to the house, we were only one exit off the highway to the base and a few turns away from the highway.
The house was in a very nice neighborhood, surrounded by almost identical houses. It was a two-story Victorian house, beige in color with a slate gray roof. I parked myself in the driveway next to Goose, looking at the wrap-around porch that had been decked out with a porch swing, sitting chairs, and a small table. I shut off the engine, got out of my car, retrieved my duffle bag from the back, and closed the door marveling at the house.
"Wow, it's beautiful." I breathed out, pressing the button on my keys to lock the door to my car. I left my flight things in there as I would not be needing those anytime soon unless I was on base or studying.
"I was not expecting Stinger to get us something this nice. I thought he hated us." Maverick said as he got all his items from his bike.
"Hates you guys maybe, he loves us," Doe said to him matter of factly. I let out a small laugh. It was true, he loved us because we actually followed instructions and listened to him when he gave us orders. Maverick always disobeyed him and Goose being his RIO carried that reputation with him as well, even though Goose was level-headed about most things and kept his pilot in check.
"Well let's see the inside, shall we?" Maverick said, bouncing up the stairs to the door unlocking it with the key attached to his bike keys. I followed his lead as we walked through the door the stairs were off to the right in front of us, the kitchen straight back, the living room to the left, and the dining room to the right. I walked into the kitchen it was minimally decorated but perfect for what we needed, to the right was a washer-dryer tucked in a small room near the backdoor. Goose and Doe went up the stairs to claim their rooms as Maverick and I explored. I opened the backdoor to reveal a backyard with a smoker and grill on the patio with a small hot tub. It was quite honestly paradise.
When I grew up my parents tried their best to be good role models for me. However, the family background was shrouded in addiction and secrets. I yearned to get away from it and I managed to quite easily when I applied to the Naval Academy. The rest is history, I took a deep breath closing my eyes. I reached my fingers into my hair and pulled down the ponytails that held it in its bun. I felt fingers push the hair from the front of my face to the back tucking it behind my ear it brought me back to the present moment. Maverick was standing behind me I could feel his breath hitting my neck as he moved my hair to the side. I cleared my throat as his fingers wandered to the base of my neck gently massaging the skin.
"Everything you ever dreamed of having?" He asked in a soft voice.
"It's more," I smiled relaxing into his touch. He was getting bolder, it seemed as if he was trying to touch me every opportunity he could. I was still getting used to accepting him this close to me. I flinched as his fingers traced quickly over my scar and down to my lower back. The movement reminded me of the pain of getting the scar, the searing blinding pain, wet blood soaking the uniform I was in. I internally begged Maverick to pull me from the memory. He noticed the stiffness of my body and spun me around putting his forehead against mine so I could hear his calm breathing, before pulling me into a hug.
"I don't know what you're going through, I wish you would just tell me, so you don't have to suffer through it alone." He whispered into my ear. His sentiment to my welfare had me struggling to keep my well-adjusted composure.
"Maverick, maybe I will someday. But you have to stop pushing." I told him unhappily, lightly pushing myself from his grip and moving to go back inside the house.
"I'm sorry Maeve." He said switching back to real names rather than callsigns so I knew he was serious.
"Wait…" He started, grabbing my wrist before I could get much further, I turned around to look towards him wondering what else he wanted to say to me.
"What?" I asked him looking curiously into his eyes as if I was going to find the answers there. I could tell he wanted to say something more but he was struggling within himself to do so.
"I know we've only just started the program… But I want you to be careful flying with these guys. I don't trust them. I know you can handle yourself but please be cautious. We've all heard the rumors of how you got your callsign. I just worry." He said to me, I nodded contemplating his request.
"What're the rumors?" I asked him curiously; I hadn't heard any new ones recently. There were a couple that assumed I had killed a lot of people in a certain deployment, which wasn't entirely far off from the truth. Maverick had only met me a few years ago, the talk of how I got my callsign had died down since then, or so I thought.
"I heard that you killed your RIO, murdered actually. I've heard that you were engaged to him. I've heard so many different versions but they all end with him dead." He said to me looking skeptical, judging my reaction. My bottom jaw clenched involuntarily, and I let out a chuckle.
"It's interesting how people twist stories after some time has gone by." I smiled through the wound he had just reopened. My body itched to leave the conversation as quickly as I could.
"Fine, I'll be careful, but you need to heed your own advice Mav," I told him, he let my hand go and I walked back inside and up the stairs to see where Crystal had set up her bedroom. I got upstairs and heard her and Nick laughing about something or another. I would say I was the more serious one out of the group of us because I knew the dangers we faced all too well. I went into the empty bedroom furthest away from the laughter that filled the house. I deserved to be this way, alone, I was better off this way.

To date, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have only shared, well, “concepts of a plan” to improve K-12 schools. During this month’s presidential debate, American families, students, and teachers had no opportunities to learn about the candidates’ education positions. Moderators did not ask a single question about education. Of similar concern, we have heard little from either candidate about specific policies to support teachers in our nation’s schools. This is particularly troubling given the convincing body of research that teachers are one of the most important school-factors to improving student learning.
Trump’s agenda, outlined on his campaign’s website, is aimed at ensuring our children have “great teachers” by adopting merit pay and ending teacher tenure. Harris’s plan seems to focus on bolstering teachers unions, such as by ending “union busting.” Delegates at the Democratic National Convention adopted an education platform, endorsed by the vice president, that includes language about improving school working conditions to “make teaching sustainable.” Neither candidate has spoken in any substantive way about recruiting, preparing, and recognizing great teachers.
In the closing weeks of the election, if both candidates are serious about strengthening the teacher workforce, specific policies, not platitudes, will be critical to strengthening the nation’s teacher workforce. Of course, a U.S. president can’t singlehandedly fix our teacher workforce problems, but they can help to set a national agenda–while initiating some federal action along the way. Here’s what each candidate should consider as they detail their teacher policy proposals:
First, the two leading candidates should outline a vision for recruiting a high-quality, diverse teacher workforce. Supporting teacher pay should be central here: A recent survey found that low teacher pay prevented otherwise interested college students from considering a career in teaching. Both Harris and Trump should support the idea of a national minimum salary of $60,000 for K–12 public school teachers. Moreover, recognizing that housing is one of the largest expenses for educators, rural and urban local school districts across the country have started to build housing for teachers. These local efforts should inform presidential candidates’ policy priorities by creating an inter-departmental effort between the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Department of Education to develop housing in communities where we need teachers, one of our nation’s indispensable resources.
Second, great teachers—like great doctors—are not born that way, but developed. There is substantial variation in how the approximately 1,700 colleges and universities, school districts, for-profit and nonprofit organizations prepare future teachers. Recently, the Texas Education Agency placed the state’s largest preparation program, a for-profit online program, on probation for failing to adequately prepare beginning teachers. Across Texas and the nation, for-profit alternative certification enrollment has increased, while enrollment in traditional teacher preparation programs has declined. One ongoing critique of traditional university-based preparation is its emphasis on teaching theories of supporting student learning with less of an understanding about how to apply those theories into practice. Low-quality teacher preparation will not provide our children with the skills to enter the middle class. A recent report published by the National Academy of Education highlights the characteristics of a high-quality teacher preparation program, which include partnerships between preparation programs and school districts and placing teacher education candidates in classrooms of experienced and effective teachers. Such high-quality preparation can be obtained through traditional and alternative preparation programs, but we need federal leadership to establish and enforce these kinds of standards for programs across the country.
Third, like doctors, teachers who have mastered their craft should be able to demonstrate it and be rewarded for it. So, the leading presidential candidates should also have a vision for promoting and supporting great teachers. Such a plan must include a federal grants program that incentivizes states to support teachers to pursue National Board Certification, the gold standard of teacher certification. Similar to doctors, teachers must meet certification requirements to teach in a particular state. And, doctors, like teachers, through a series of rigorous exams, can earn a national board certification to demonstrate their professional expertise. Prior evidence shows that National Board Certified Teachers improve student outcomes when compared to teachers who are not board certified. But here’s the snag: while 80% of doctors in our country are board certified, only 4% of teachers are board certified. We need to encourage more teachers to earn this distinction and then reward them for their mastery, especially when teaching in hard-to-staff areas. States such as Texas, California, and Maryland have created incentive programs for educators to pursue National Board Certification. For teachers working in the highest-need schools, the annual stipends after earning board certification in Texas, California, and Maryland are $9,000, $5,000, and $17,000, respectively. Across red and blue states alike, policymakers have viewed investments in National Board Certification not only as a way to reward great teachers but also as a policy lever to retain teachers in schools where they are needed most. Presidential leadership on this issue will enhance teachers’ status and paychecks while improving access to quality teaching for disadvantaged students.
There are less than 40 days until the U.S. presidential election. Both candidates’ goals to “Make America Great” or to create an “Opportunity Economy” can be actualized by detailing teacher policy proposals to improve K-12 education. It is high time for more specific policies and fewer platitudes from both former President Trump and Vice President Harris.

Back to School: Interview with Meredith Towne, Young Writers Program Educator
Tumblr media
NaNoWriMo’s Young Writers Program helps over 85,000 kids, teens, teachers, and families set creative goals and tell stories they care about. We asked some of our amazing YWP educators to share how they take on the NaNoWriMo challenge in their classroom. Today’s advice comes from Meredith Towne, a high school English teacher in New York City!
Q: What grade/ age level do you work with? What type of NaNoWriMo group is it (whole class, club, homeschool, elective, etc.)?
A: 12th. Whole class (ELA 12, general education and ICT)
Q: How long have you been doing NaNoWriMo with your students?
A: 7 years
Q: How do you structure the entire project (for example, do you start prepping in October and write in November, do you have kids work on it all year, etc.)?
A: We do 2 weeks of prep in October, write in November, revise 10 pages in December (2500-3k words). This year we had workbooks for all our students which was a huge help.
Q: What does a normal NaNoWriMo day look like for your students?
A: In November students come in and write. Teachers do 1:1 check-ins. With holidays sometimes students only get 13 class days (60 min each) so every moment is precious.
Q: How do you set and manage word-count goals?
A: We conference and since Covid have let students choose their goals and have pushed less. Usually we challenge 10k, 20k or 30k+ goals.
Q: How do you manage grading? Do you grade?
A: We do 4 progress checks where students are to meet the word count goal for that day. This is a participation grade. The revision is then graded as a summative assessment for all of our core competencies. I also love the YWP portal. It has become easy to track student progress and coordinate with co-teachers.
Q: How do you approach revision/ publishing (if at all)?
A: 10 pages, a section of choice. Bookcreator.com is an amazing tool for creating a cover and cool layout. We do a public share as well.
Q: Any NaNoWriMo tips or tricks to share with other educators? Hard-won lessons? Ah-ha moments?
A: Get the workbooks. Don't grade down for not meeting goal. Progress not perfection. In our classes students have to write at least 1500 words to be eligible to revise. If they have not met goals they move to an alternative assessment we have designed that aligns with our competency skills.
Q: Have you ever run into resistance from your administration about doing NaNoWriMo, and if so, how did you manage it? What do you say to people who don’t see the point of having students write novels?
A: No, never an issue. It has become one of the things lower classmen are warned about in Ms. Towne's class! 😀 I love this legacy.
Q: What are the most meaningful things you or your students take away from the project? What's your best NaNoWriMo memory?
A: One of the students who did NaNo in 2017 is starting a MFA in creative writing. This is the same kid who told me his senior year he didn't want to go to college. I credit NaNo!
Tumblr media
Meredith Towne is a high school English teacher in New York City. She has challenged her Seniors to win NaNoWriMo YWP for the last 7 years. Meredith especially loves writing along with her students so they can see her walk the walk. She does her best writing early in the morning and can be found in her classroom before the sun comes up in November to write.

Poast about something in LeftFashistan, Duce.
I am not nearly larpy enough to take that title, I'm some weeb in a hovel that posts on a dying webbed site.
Anyways, education should and will be nationalised as a public necessity. The nation lives and dies by the aptitude of it's people, and critical services such as medical fields are absolutely completely fucked up by education debt and poor training to meet quotas or silly notions of social ideology. K-12 and up to eight years of tertiary should be 100% subsidised.
Educational reform away from Liberal Education is also on the menu as it is in it's entirety a failed aspiration, and a bougie one at that. Not everyone wants to be in or belongs in a liberal ed or academic program. Plus the ability to be an intelligent well-rounded citizen should be achieved before even secondary has concluded.
Part of this reform is better testing and triage of pupils towards where they would do best or want to do. No more repeating American History every other year, no more treating children like little cogs or teens as morons who can't focus for more than three quarters of an hour, no more bullshit courses to justify budgets; MORE trades and life skills, MORE arts and creative/productive classes, MORE learning how to live well and nobly, and the most important: a shift towards interest-based curricula ala a certain well regarded Italian lady.
Elective Ed, I guess you could call it, should kick in around seventh year and each year beyond you choose more of your classes with guidance from instructors and counselors (of course a minimum arithmetic and language comprehension work will be required in all years, but the focus is on electives). This will be supplemented by frequent field trips to see different kinds of work in action and in older secondary pupils perhaps even work-study.
I have another take about mandatory federal service and that ties in here too, but not directly relevant to educational reform. Simply making courses free is not enough to fix our shit learning just like a few laws and regulations isn't gonna fix our market republic. Sweeping structural changes are needed.

Worldbuilding Soljoro
Soljoro is the largest nation on Corsova 3, dominating a little over half of the continent Numaria, which it shares with its rival nation Insturi. Soljoro and Insturi are the locales of principle action in the series.
Soljoro is majority human and has a population of about 40 million people. Insturi is majority Fae and has about 27 million.
Originally called Nulor until the end of the 3rd Epoch, when the dynasty of the Tols came to an end, it became a constitutional Republic and has lasted about 900 years.
Its government is representative democracy governed by the Charter of Rights and Duties enumerating what rights citizens have. Currently most people are unofficially considered citizens but only property owners who are cis male can vote. But the question of citizenship is not resolved. It will take a social movement to reform the Charter and expand the franchise.
Every five years a Premier is elected by eligible voters to serve as the executive. The Premier presides over the Soljoran military and the Assembly, which is made up of 45 members, each of whom are elected on a 3 year term.
The political process is aided by an unelected group called the Order of the Wise. Originally advisors to the Tols, they were exposed as having been founded by the (now extinct) cult of the Drach-Noz, servants of the defeated Fellwraith under the reign of the last of the Tols, Tol Aranon. Purged, reformed, and reorganized, they now help study proposed laws and determine their effects.
Another powerful group involved in politics is the central bank of Soljoro, a private institution called the High Bank of Rel. Their lobbiests bribe elected Publicans in the Assembly and generally work in the interests of itself, profit, and the wealthy houses.
Soljoro is also home of Tem Sharis, the mysterious compound of the Artificer Collective. The Collective is a secretive, isolationist group of spell-weavers who are officially neutral on Soljoran policy, but this is not universally held. Publicans are eager for advice from the Collective, which is believed to be able to predict the future, and at times they will intervene if a bill or crisis is dangerous or severe enough. The compound comprises the Collective's housing, research facility, and Artificing workshop. The Collective has majtech far in advance of the rest of Soljoro, thanks to the Mindlink. The Mindlink is a space of larger collective consciousness created by the link between each individual consciousness; once Integrated you cannot disconnect, but you also do not lose your individuality. Rather, your baseline knowledge is elevated to the best current collective understanding of the Collective. If you knew nothing about the piano but joined the Mindlink, you would gain intimate knowledge of the best skilled piano talents in the Collective and know how to play it as well as them, and as you play you integrate it by developing your own personal style which is then added to the Collective.
Socially, Soljoro is divided into several classes. The upper class are eligible to vote in elections, and are organized in a hierarchy of wealth and prestige. The pinnicle of the pecking order are the Seven Houses, the wealthiest and most powerful of the elite, the last remaining intact descendants of the 12 founding Lords houses who served the Tol dynasty.
After the switch to a republic the Seven attempted a coup to overthrow the Premier and the Assembly and restore the monarchy, provoking the Wars of the Merchant Kings. Ultimately they lost and the Republic stripped them of their titles of nobility to forestall a popular revolution, which the Seven have never forgiven. They have spent the last three hundred years intermarrying with the rising merchant class to unify their position and move into the trades business. This has resulted in a monopoly of several merchant guilds. The two which control the vast majority of the market are the East Wind Free Trade Consortium (EWFTC) and its primary competitor, the Syndicate of Mercantile Ventures (SMV).
The Seven haven't given up on restoring the monarchy. They continue the search for a rumored heir of the Tols that had survived down to the present time, and report to one another at an occasional meeting at the manor of House Tullis, the oldest and richest of them all.
Beneath the Seven and the EWFTC and SMV and the High Bank of Rel, there are the middle class merchants and their families. Their style is a fantasy steampunk version of Victorian London wear.
Below them are the ordinary people, who subsist at the level of peasants just before the French Revolution. They work in the factories and shops and do odd jobs for a little extra cash. A large disabled population, including children (victims of child labor) mangled in the factory machines beg for food and coin, or if they can still do some limited work, go to the Skyport or the riverdock called the Whorl to load and unload luggage and supplies.
At the time of the series, Soljoro has become badly corrupted and the Assembly seems unable to do anything. Reforms have ground to a halt against three decades of sustained backlash and rollback, and the High Court is stacked with cronies of the Seven. As one wit has it, "the old is dying, and the new cannot be born." That is the crisis.
People feel stuck and the nation seems on the verge of riots and possibly revolt from below. A religious revival sweeps over the poor, drawing them into the wealthy arms of the Constellation, the established religion that worships the Twelve (heroes who saved the world in the past) and the One (the high god Anistaru). A populist nationalism is growing bolder and more violent, clammoring to retake the land Soljoro gave to the Insturins long ago to rebuild their own civilization. A civilization that now rivals and threatens to overtake Soljoro as the power on the continent.

From Defeat to Victory: A Journey of Leadership and Resilience
Hello, cherished readers! Today, I'd like to encourage you to travel on a journey that captures the essence of The Professional's Compass: a personal voyage that is a story of aspirations, tenacity, and endurance.
Since my first days of school, I have been in awe of the senior students who are chosen to serve as captains and head boys/head girls. Their leadership made a lasting impression on me and inspired a passionate desire in me to one day assume that role. I was resolved to take charge and serve as a change agent in my school's community.
I gave everything I had to every duty from the moment I took on the position of Monitor/Prefect in first grade and gave everything I had to school activities. I improved my leadership abilities with every year that went by, learning how to uplift and encourage my colleagues. By the time I was in class nine, I was more than prepared to submit my name for consideration for the Assembly Committee, which consisted of professors who chose students based on their abilities and commitment.
I was chosen to serve on the Assembly Committee with unshakeable commitment and a dash of divine grace. My desire to climb the leadership ladder was further stoked by the acknowledgement and sense of accomplishment.
Then came class 10, which was crucial since it was the first time I was able to run for council. As I decided to run for the coveted title of Agni House Vice Captain, excitement sprang within me. The road to success was not without challenges, though. I experienced an unanticipated tsunami of hatred and animosity during the campaign. I yet clung to the hope that I would triumph despite the obstacles.
My heart raced in anticipation as the election results were announced. However, my aspirations collapsed as I realized I had lost. The hit was crushing, and I started to doubt my skills and worry about other people's opinions of me. It appeared as though my aspirations of leadership were vanishing in that depressing moment.
But there was a glimmer of resiliency inside of me—a resolve not to let hardship dictate my path. I decided to pull back, give myself some time to recover, and consider what I might acquire from this experience.
I recommitted to school activities in the couple of months that followed, wanting to learn and develop. To improve my strategy, I acknowledged instances where I could use feedback from peers and mentors. I gradually but steadily turned my attention away from the defeat's disappointment and towards my goal of achieving the title of the Head Girl, the highest position in terms of management in my school.
The epidemic that affected every part of our existence, including school elections, in class 11 presented unforeseen difficulties. Despite the failure, I remained determined to succeed. I remained tenacious, maintained my desire, and patiently awaited the right time to pursue my dream.
I knew it was time to jump again as class 12 approached, bringing with it fresh challenges and chances. I started my campaign with an unflinching commitment, hoping to get the support of my classmates.
The battle to win was a steep one. I held onto my vision and my confidence in myself despite the doubts and worries that threatened to keep me back. I came to see that being a leader wasn't merely about a title but rather about motivating others and having a good impact with each conversation and connection.
The election results were declared at a crucial moment. My palms were clammy with anticipation as my heart raced. Then it happened: I was chosen to serve as Lakshmipat Singhania Academy's Head Girl! Waves of happiness, relief, and appreciation swept over me. This victory wasn't only for me; it was also a symbol of the strength that comes from resiliency, tenacity, and steadfast faith.
In hindsight, this experience offered me priceless lessons. I discovered that failure doesn't mean the end but rather a chance for development. Setbacks can be transformed into stepping stones on the path to success with the help of peers, mentors, and an optimistic outlook.
I hope that my tale encourages you, my readers, to embrace resiliency and unshakeable faith in your unique potential as you travel your path in the areas of leadership, integrity, and personal development. Let The Professional's Compass serve as your compass, pointing you in the direction of success and harmony in your personal and professional lives.
May you have the courage to dream, to fail, and to ascend even higher. In the end, the transforming journey we take to realize our full potential—rather than the final destination—defines who we are. Thank you for coming along with me on this life-changing journey as we set sail for a time when visionaries will dream big and make a difference in the world.

Why BCA is a Smart Choice for Students Interested in Coding and AI
In a world where every business depends on technology, students who love programming and artificial intelligence are finding exciting new opportunities. If you enjoy solving problems, writing code, and exploring how machines can learn and think, the Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) is a course that can turn your passion into a career.
This article explores why BCA is an excellent choice for students after Class 12, especially those who want to build a future in coding, software development, or AI. It also highlights why choosing the right BCA college in Dehradun can make all the difference.
What is BCA, and who is it for?
BCA is a three-year undergraduate degree that focuses on computer applications and programming. It is ideal for students who want to work in the IT sector but prefer a more application-focused path than traditional engineering courses.
Unlike BTech, which often includes subjects like physics and advanced mathematics, BCA offers a more practical and coding-centric approach. Even students who did not have mathematics in Class 12 can apply, depending on the university.
Coding is at the Core of BCA
If you love coding, BCA is designed for you. The course teaches programming languages such as:
Python
Java
C and C++
JavaScript
SQL
You will learn how to write clean code, build software applications, develop websites, and work with databases. The focus is not only on learning the syntax but also on solving real-world problems using logic and algorithms.
A Great Starting Point for Artificial Intelligence
AI is one of the fastest-growing fields in the world. Whether it's voice assistants, recommendation systems, or self-driving cars, AI is reshaping how we live and work. BCA introduces you to the foundations of AI and related fields such as:
Machine Learning
Data Science
Natural Language Processing
Neural Networks
You will also learn how to work with large datasets, train models, and understand the logic behind how intelligent systems function. With the right electives and projects, BCA students can gain strong practical knowledge of AI.
Strong Career Opportunities in IT and Beyond
Graduates of BCA can pursue a variety of roles in the tech industry. These include:
Software Developer
Web Developer
Data Analyst
AI and Machine Learning Engineer
Cybersecurity Specialist
System Administrator
UI/UX Designer
Tech companies, startups, multinational corporations, and government agencies are constantly hiring skilled BCA graduates. The demand is especially high for those with expertise in coding and artificial intelligence.
Higher Studies and Specialisations
After BCA, many students opt for higher studies to deepen their skills. Popular choices include:
MCA (Master of Computer Applications)
MBA in IT or Business Analytics
MSc in Data Science or Artificial Intelligence
Professional certifications in cloud computing, cybersecurity, or AI tools
This helps you specialise in a niche area and makes you more competitive in the job market.
Why Location and College Matter
While BCA is offered across India, choosing the right location and institution is essential. Dehradun, known for its peaceful environment and educational excellence, is home to some of the country’s top universities. Studying at a reputed BCA college in Dehradun gives you access to quality education, modern infrastructure, and industry exposure.
Why IMS Unison University is a Top BCA College in Dehradun
If you are looking for a trusted BCA college in Dehradun, IMS Unison University is a standout choice. Its School of Computer Applications is designed to meet the demands of today’s tech industry.

Conclusion
Choosing a BCA degree is a smart move for students who are serious about coding and want to explore careers in AI and technology. It combines practical learning, industry exposure, and flexibility for future specialisation.
And if you are planning to study in Uttarakhand, enrolling in a well-established BCA college in Dehradun like IMS Unison University can be your first step towards building a rewarding career in tech.
Your future in coding and AI starts with the right course and the right campus. Make your decision wisely.
