Benjamin H. Forbes, BJU Class of 1974.
Benjamin Howell Forbes (85) passed peacefully on July 19, 2024 after succumbing to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Always a man to live on his own terms, he determined when he was ready to be made comfortable and was prepared physically, mentally and spiritually to leave this earth.
Born in Wilson, NC on June 19, 1939, Ben was a 1957 graduate of Charles L. Coon High School. He earned the rank of Airman First Class in the US Air Force, serving from 1958 to 1962 at Stead Air Force Base in Sparks, NV, where he trained hundreds of pilots in desert and mountain survival training, including the first seven US astronauts. Following his honorable discharge, he served in the Air National Guard in an RF-4 Phantom (Aerial Reconnaissance) unit as a film processing specialist.
Ben enjoyed trying and learning new things and worked by turns as a milkman, a professional fire fighter and a casino dealer in Reno, NV. He returned to Wilson, NC in 1969, converted to Christianity and moved to Greenville, SC to train for the ministry. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible from Bob Jones University in 1974 and served as a pastor and school administrator for ten years. He then became a residential contractor prior to returning to the gaming industry in Nevada.
A man of many talents and interests, Ben easily made friends everywhere and loved to take long road trips to visit them. He could often be seen helping someone with a home project or donating to/volunteering with charity organizations. He loved to garden, he loved to travel and, most of all, he loved to teach. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children, who often quote one of his most-used phrases: ""These are things you need to know.” His favorite place in the world was the Pilot Peak community near Montello, NV. He loved the beauty of the desert and the ability to see for many miles in all directions.
He is survived by a daughter, Catherine Forbes (Pitsch Karrer) of Chatham Center, New York; a son, Col (ret) Christopher Forbes (Amy) of Columbus, GA; a daughter, Liz Forbes of Greenville, SC; and four grandchildren Tori Ruff (Nathan), Jessica Theodorski, Jack Forbes and Charles Forbes, two brothers, Raymond Forbes (Nancy), William Forbes (Cindy) and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin C. and Glennie T. Forbes, and two brothers Clarence Forbes and Bruce Forbes in Wilson, NC. Interment of ashes ceremonies will be held on future dates in Wilson, NC and Montello, NV.
The family expresses their deep appreciation for the compassionate caregivers at The Gables on Pelham and Providence Care Hospice in Greenville, SC, as well as the staff at the VA Salt Lake City Health Care. Additionally, special thanks to Dad's good friends and neighbors in Nevada and Utah, who helped him be able to live independently as he wanted.

1974 ad for Scalecraft model kits including the Supermarine Spitfire, the FV601 Alvis Saladin armoured car, the Ford GT40 and the 'Ton Class' Minesweeper*.
*The 'Ton' referred to the minesweepers being named after British towns and villages ending in 'ton' such as Kirkliston, Highburton, Wilton and so on. Very British.

humble fumble, ballot boxed
Tumblr media
Not sure what "try being popular" even means. I don't think Reggie ever wins these things.
Tumblr media
The execution on "Ballot Boxed", where after seeing how everyone is swayed by Jughead's slogan posters for Archie's candidacy Reggie buys him off and you see the rest here, leaves something to be desired. It needs just a mite better slogans than "Archie By Cracky" for me to suspend disbelief and accept. On the soundness of the premise, I am reminded that in voting for asb positions, having nothing else to go by and no clear idea of what the heck I was voting for besides a good line for the candidates' college applications, I voted for whoever have me the most number of campaign stickers.

Pogue splashed down with astronauts Gerald P. Carr and Dr. Edward G. Gibson, 84 days after the trio was launched by a Saturn IB rocket from Kennedy Space Center. Circling the globe 1, 214 times aboard the sophisticated Skylab space station during the nearly three-month flight, the astronauts demonstrated man's ability to live and work in space for extended periods."

As a first step on my way to outlining a swedish version of ghosts, I've sketched out the fundamental character dynamics that make the original show work. What's important in an adaption isn't to follow this template to the letter (you can't), it's to understand the principles behind the creative decisions, so that you can develop and build something similar but with different materials.
And while I don't think I stated it explicitly below, the house is obviously THE thematic core of the show. It is what bridges the past with the present and holds all the characters in place, tying them to each other. And it's in ruins - that's very important. It's the embodyment of the ghosts' crumbling relationships, until Alison and Mike turn up and begin to repare it - or, well, at least maintain it, because it's also a symbol of their crumbling financial situation (both before and during the show). Thus the house not only brings the characters together, but it also requires input from the outside world; it keeps generating conflict in two direcitons, perfectly adapted to the traditional A plot/B plot formula of sitcoms. In short, a situational comedy thrives on its situations: in ghosts, the house is the situation.
First: an outline of the show as is, providing some character traits for inspiration and an example of how they can balance each other out. Good to have as a reference point, even if it shouldn't be used as a cookie cutter template.
Tumblr media
+ a bonus plan for how to start creating new characters based on historical periods (in swedish though :P but google translate should work on images. I'm just lazy)

I hate that so many respectability politics morons made it so that gay people who want to buy high quality legal pads and nice loafers are seen as being in opposition to gay people with pink liberty spikes wearing harnesses. 1974 ad for Dinky Toys.
Model 609 - 105mm Howitzer. This was the US M101A1 105mm Howitzer. Introduced in World War ll and still in use at the time of this ad.
Model 675 - Motor Patrol Boat. The Royal Navy Brave Class motor torpedo boat. The RN only had two (HMS Brave Borderer and HMS Brave Swordsman) and both had retired by 1970. A small number of others of this class were built for the export market.
Model 1030 - Land Rover Breakdown Crane. As it states in the ad this particular vehicle was in kit form. The other two items shown were ordinary diecast models but this Land Rover was one of a new series of models Dinky had introduced in the early 70's that required some construction and painting first.

Because you know a lot about these sorts of things: is D&D the first place where devils and demons are distinct groups of mutually antagonistic evil entities as opposed to being synonyms for one another, or did they steal that from some obscure fantasy pulp novel from the 1960s, as so much other stuff now seen as iconic to D&D is?
Much like making picky distinctions between wizards, sorcerers and warlocks, the general idea of making "devils" and "demons" distinct classes of supernatural beasties pre-dates Dungeons & Dragons in popular fiction, but the specific definitions that D&D uses are basically only applicable to D&D; every work of sword and sorcery fiction I'm aware of that distinguishes between the two terms does so differently.
For example, in Robert Aspirin's "Myth Adventures" series, "Devils" are a specific race of extradimensional aliens who coincidentally resemble pop-Christianity's notion of the Devil (i.e., red skin, goat legs, etc.), while a "demon" is simply any sapient being who's been magically summoned from another dimension. Hence, Devils are sometimes demons (at least when they're away from home), but – unless there's a convention or something going on – the majority of demons in any given dimension are not Devils.
To the point, I can't think of any particular work of pre-1974 (i.e., pre-D&D) sword and sorcery fiction whose demons-versus-devils split hinges on Law and Chaos in the same way that D&D's does; I suspect that the game's authors simply took the pre-existing notion of demons and devils being different things and pasted the terms onto a straight lift of Michael Moorcock's "Eternal Champions" cosmology (which doesn't use either term) – though if anyone is aware of a prior case of fantasy fiction specifically associating "devil" with cosmic Order and "demon" with cosmic Chaos, I'd love to be corrected!
(As always, if anyone would like to offer a counterexample, please check the publication date first; works published after 1974 post-date Dungeons & Dragons, so they're no help here.)

Curious in the first one Betty would view Archie's transactional adjustment as romantic flirting. It is certainly a weird lesson for Science class, and a cursory search online shows what is obvious -- this is in no way the case. The contradictory messages of our educational system move forth -- you are so very special and reach for the stars versus you are insignificant and need to remain firmly grounded.
