365 Proverbs for Daily Living
Day 26 – Trust in the Lord
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. (Pro 3:5-6 ESV)
Read: Joshua 6:1-7
About 30 years ago when my wife and I were young parents, we attended a church with a thriving AWANA program. Now, I had no idea what that was, and odds are you don’t either, unless you were in one, or your church has one. As an aside, for those who DON’T know, AWANA is a worldwide bible-teaching Christian ministry serving boys and girls with the gospel of Christ, and training them to serve Him. It reaches 7.1 million kids in 136 countries around the world, using over 500,000 equipped leaders and over 84,000 churches. A child who remains in the program and does the work will memorize over 570 verses, more verses than the entire book of Romans.

But I was one of those who had no idea what it was, and considered it to just be a ‘babysitting service’ for the church when we went to night service, or out to small church in homes. Little did I know God was about to ‘take me to school’. It began when each parent received a letter from the ‘babysitter’ telling us that she needed help with the kids or we’d have to take our little ones with us. I said, “If nobody else will do it, I will.” Let me tell you, those are not words you want to say entering into a ministry. You need to consider carefully what you are doing, but above all, you need to Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and not lean on your own understanding.

There were 25 kids ages 3-4 in there, two of them already on Ritalin, and just coming down from it as evening service started. Yes, four-year-olds on speed. With one leader and 25 kids. It was all I could do to physically restrain Thing One and Thing Two, and the other 23 were up to the lady. It was a nightmare, until she sat on the rug. Immediately the screaming stopped and every kid dropped to the rug to hear a story. When the story was over, it was back to crazy until the parents came forever later to pick up their kids. I lasted two weeks in there, and vowed never to ever come back. I told that story to a friend, and he chuckled. “You’re going to be Awana Commander!” I told him he was crazy. I would never go back.
The next year, my daughter started refusing to go to church at night. She loved Jesus, and was only 5. My wife went with her that night to find out what was up. I went to small group alone. When I picked her up, her eyes were shining. “You’ve GOT to come see this ministry they are doing with the kids at church! You’d be fantastic at it! It’s this thing called AWANA!” I backed up. “Unh Uh! Never again!” She told me to try it just ONE SUNDAY. If I didn’t like it, I never had to do it again. I took a gulp and agreed to go back to that torture. But it wasn’t like before.

I was asked to sit in a chair while kids who couldn’t even read yet were bringing books up and asking me to listen to them reciting scripture they’d memorized. Verses I’d never heard of in the Bible. And I started crying. It was so beautiful, these kids WANTING to hide God’s Word in their hearts. The old fire I’d let die down, when I first connected with my Maker, was on their faces. That desire I’d lost, they’d somehow found. And frankly I couldn’t wait to return the following Sunday.

After a few years in the ministry, just listening to sections and helping out, sometimes bringing my guitar and leading songs, I volunteered to be on the Children’s Council board. It met Wednesday nights, and lasted about 30 minutes. In one of the first meetings I was in, they were discussing needing a warm body for something. I wasn’t listening, I was thinking about dinner. But they suggested one person after another, rejecting each idea. One person had left the church, another was in a different ministry, blah blah blah. Finally one of the ladies sighed. “Well, WHO can we get to be Awana Commander, then?” IMMEDIATELY, my friend’s face popped into my mind from four years previously, saying to my face, “You’re going to be Awana Commander!”

By this time, I knew what a prompting from God was. I knew what God wanted by reminding me of that incident. But I was scared, so I argued with God, back and forth, each time, silently telling him I was inexperienced, was afraid, was not equipped. Each time, that friend’s face would reappear, with that line. Finally God broke in with a verse I’d heard weeks previously. One you might have heard from Esther. It ends with the words, the only ones I heard, “…for such a time as this…” I stood up and shouted at God. “FINE! I’LL DO IT!” Suddenly, I looked around, and remembered I was in a meeting. And everyone was staring at me. “Did I say that out loud?” The children’s pastor nodded. I sighed. “I think God is calling me to step up and do this, if you’ll have me.” He nodded, checked a checkbox on his clipboard, and said, “Ok, that’s done. Next order of business…” As if this sort of thing happened every day. LOL. It probably did.
So, what’s the bottom line? Like Joshua at Jericho, it doesn’t always make sense. But trust God anyway. “It’s impossible.” Haven’t you heard? NOTHING is impossible with God. “I’m not equipped.” HE is. “I can’t do this.” HE can. “I’m afraid.” TRUST Him. Oh, dear Christian, whatever challenge you’re facing, whatever difficulty you see before you, whatever mountain you have to climb or river you have to cross, He is with you. TRUST Him with ALL your heart, and stop leaning on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in everything you do, and he will take care of the rest.
Prayer:
Oh, Father God, Thank you for your gift of wisdom. Help me Lord to trust you more, and lean on you, and trust you to know the way in the challenges that face me, today. Amen

Fluoxetinianas

Geoffrey: Hey, you ever wondered what happened to Vanessa?
Bob: Vanessa? Vanessa Villareal?
Geoffrey: Yeah. When we came back from break, she just- vanished.
Bob: Yeah, that was crazy, huh? I talked to Cassie about it once. She said it reminded her of that whole Angela thing that happened junior year.
Geoffrey: What Angela thing?
Bob: You don’t know about the Angela thing!?
Geoffrey: [chuckles] No one told me about it! It was like a urban legend.
Bob: Vanessa and her mean girl squad ganged up on her and started bullying her because they thought she was a lesbian or something.
Geoffrey: No way. Was she?
Bob: I dunno. I mean, she was always hanging on to Vanessa. I guess that’s where the rumors started. Anyway, Cassie thinks maybe people were starting to talk about her and Nancy. They were close too.
Geoffrey: What? Why didn’t you guys tell me?
Bob: Dude, it’s just gossip. We can’t know for sure that’s what happened. Vanessa was always getting sent to the office, she probably got expelled.
Geoffrey: Yeah...
Bob: Are you ok, man?
Geoffrey: I think maybe that’s why Nancy’s been so down all this time. I think she misses Vanessa.
Bob: Probably, friendships between women are really intense.
-
Darling: [groans] I can’t believe I have class in 5 hours. I’m screwed.
Nancy: [laughs] Who told us to throw a rager on a Thursday?
Darling: Hey, we’re still in better shape than those two over there.
Nancy: The Thetas? More like tea parties.
Darling: [laughs] Hell nah.
Nancy: Should we check if they have a pulse?
Darling: [chuckles] Man, they can’t handle their liquor for shit.
Nancy: Did you meet them through the club?
Darling: Morgan chased me down to do a tarot reading one day.
Nancy: Ah. She got you too, did she?
Darling: I kinda like that stuff, you know, like zodiac signs and all that. Tells you alot about a person. Speaking of, what’s your sign?
Nancy: I have no idea. Maybe I’m a Pisces?
Darling: When’s your birthday?
Nancy: January 17th.
Darling: Huh, no shit? You’re a Capricorn. I’m a Virgo.
Nancy: What does that mean?
Darling: For one, means we’re compatible.
Nancy: Oh? How can you tell?
Darling: We’re both earth signs, means we grounded. We want the real thing.
Nancy: I don’t know what I want.
Darling: I think you do though. I think you don’t want to say it.
Nancy: What don’t I want to say?
Darling: You tell me.
Nancy: Well. I guess... I guess I have alot of questions.
Darling: Like what? Keep it real, it’s just me.
Nancy: Well.. How do you know that you’re- you know.
Darling: What, into girls? I’ve always known.
Nancy: But how do you know for sure?
Darling: I was probably born this way. I never looked at guys the way I look at women. I love everything about them. I love the way they smell, the way they feel. I’m probably crazy about them. It’s wired in my brain.
Nancy: Have you ever kissed a girl?
Darling: [chuckles]
Nancy: Don’t laugh...
Darling: You’re right, you’re right, my bad. Yeah, Nancy. I’ve done alot more than kissing though.
Nancy: Oh. You mean...like sex?
Darling: Yeah. Like sex.
Darling: Oh. I guess that means you’re done asking questions.
Nancy: ....What is it like?
Darling: Kissing?
Nancy: I know about kissing. I mean [clears throat] the sex. With a girl. What does it feel like?
Darling: You really wanna know?
Nancy: Well. I asked, didn’t I?
Darling: Alright. Give me your hand.
Darling: You wanna know?
Nancy: [swallows] Mhm..
