#2882 - Celosia spicata - Flamingo Feather Flower
Tumblr media
One of a genus of Amaranths native to tropical Africa, SE Asia, and the Americas, named from the Greek for 'burning', after the luridly coloured flower heads. Some cultivars commonly grow into fasciate mutations, as here, adding to their visual appeal if you like your plants looking particularly alien.
Other common names include woolflower, or if fasciated, cockscombs. In Swahili they're known as mfungu, and one edible species is called Lagos Spinach or soko yokoto, meaning "make husbands fat and happy" in Nigeria.
Kerala, India.

Language of Flowers: Cockscomb
There is, in the language of flowers, a flower for every day of the year. The flower for today, December 14, is Cockscomb, which signifies singularity. Image above from Wikipedia. Celosia is a small genus of edible and ornamental plants in the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae. The generic name is derived from the ancient Greek word kḗleos, meaning “burning,” and refers to the flame-like flower…
