How important is the "similar books" section on Query Manager to you after reading the query? I know writers need to know the market and where their book fits in but do you just glance at that or really study it to make sure the writer knows what they're talking about? Also, what do you expect to see there--in depth about each comp about WHY it's similar or just a list and if so, how many do you like to see? TIA!

I probably peek at that BEFORE the query, actually. But either way, it's so-so in importance. Like, it's not going to make me like a book I don't already like. Nor will it make me DISLIKE a book I DO like. But good comp titles MIGHT make me more excited to read something.

And it does kind of give me a bit of a sanity check for the author. How do THEY see this book? Where do they see it in the bookstore? What kind of audience are they aiming for? Are they generally familiar with the parameters of the market, etc.

A few titles is fine. If you HAVE specifics about the book, that's fine. (For example, if your book is TONALLY or setting-wise like XYZ, but not plot-wise, you can say, "it has the Dark Academia Vibes of SUCHANDSUCH by So-And-So, and will appeal to readers who like Romantasy and Dragons like BLAHBLAHBLAH by Such-and-Such and YADDAYADDA by Whatsit") -- but also, I can probably figure that out, so a list is fine, too.

At the end of the day, you don't need to be (and indeed SHOULDN'T be) seeking books that are JUST like your book. You don't want your book to be a copycat! You just want to show that you understand what it is you are writing and what type of folks might enjoy reading it. That's it. VIBES, babe.

Indie are there any characters you are nominating

Well I won’t be nominating myself, competitors will be decided 100% by popular vote. But I can still encourage y’all to submit characters from certain media:

1. I’m into Murder Drones, and the creator’s (probably abandoned) side project Internecion Cube

2. Obviously Ena, I set them as my profile picture for a reason lol

3. One of the rules I added was specifically to allow Bee and Puppycat despite being on Netflix now

4. I also really love stuff Piemations made. Maybe someone can submit Todd Hayseed or Suction Cup Man

5. Fluffle Puff is an example of a fanmade character for existing media who qualifies for this comp. And from the same fandom, Snowdrop

6. Glitchtale, preferably Betty. Also that series is like the shining example of creator’s improvement over time. The difference in quality between the first episode and the last is out of this world
