word count: 1.7k
synopsis: in which sylus defies all logic and odds, just for you.
contains: part 2 of blackjack, sylus x fem!reader (non mc, first time meeting), slightly obsessive sylus, alcohol consumption, cursing, mentions of weapons and violence, and gambling (know the rules of blackjack).
a/n: in blackjack, you want to get as close as you can to 21 without going over. to bust means to go over 21. to stay means to stay with the cards you have. you can tap for more cards or wave to stay. a natural (best outcome) means you immediately get 21 with your initial cards. but, you don't have to get to 21 to win. so long as the dealer has a worse hand than you, you win. essentially, it's a game against the dealer, not the people you play with. reblogs & comments are appreciated.

sylus has never lost in blackjack before.
he's mastered every gambling card game for the sake of business deals and corrupt clients. and yet, here you are, spitting at his mastery as you flip another twenty, forcing him to either stay at his nineteen or risk a bust. and sylus never stays or busts in blackjack.
while your hands question almost every statistic and probability out there, your expression is what truly does it for him. even though you've only been winning, you haven't shown a trace of happiness or any other emotion normally present at a poker table. there's nothing when your opponents raise their bets, nothing when you win their bets, and infuriatingly nothing when your silver-haired opponent leans on the table and gazes at you hungrily after you take his chips for the umpteenth time tonight.
chuckling to himself, sylus can't help but think, what's going on in that pretty little head of yours? what will it take for you to look at him with half the interest he's looking at you with right now?
"because the lounge closes in less than thirty minutes," you gesture to the clock, snapping the silver-haired man out of his thoughts. "this will be the final round."
you hand a deck of cards to sylus, signaling him to shuffle. he takes it from you, trying not to shudder when his finger grazes yours.
sherman and his lackey groan upon checking how many chips they have left. "and here i thought blackjack was the easiest game against the house," the former complains as he lights a cigar.
"perhaps," the latter starts carefully, "we can wager something different this round." he shares a knowing look with his boss before turning to sylus. "what do you think, mr. sylus?"
sylus sighs as he finishes shuffling the deck. that idiot messed up his shuffle. great, now he looks like an idiot to you. "what would you like to wager?" he huffs as he places the deck in front of you.
"the deal, sylus," sherman snaps. "if i win, we have a deal."
sylus laughs mirthlessly, shaking his head. seems like the imbecile finally decided to drop his friendly act. "and what will your little employee wager?" he asks with faux curiosity.
"that depends on the lady in front of us, mr. sylus," the man in question answers before licking his lips at you. "say, miss dealer. if i win, how about you accompany mr. sherman and me back to a hotel nearby? we promise you'll be thoroughly compensated."
the head of onychinus stands up swiftly, his hands curling into fists. he should have seen this coming. the knowing look sherman and his lackey shared earlier wasn't just a shot at trapping him into a deal; it was an attempt at you and who knows what nauseating desires. before he can pummel the two men into the ground, you speak.
"i'm afraid that won't be possible, gentlemen," you pick up a chip and flip it between your knuckles. "the main objective of blackjack is to beat the dealer, not to win exclusively." your eyes never leave the chip. "for example, what will happen to your wagers if only i win?" you place the chip down. "in other words, multiple wagers are useless in blackjack due to its main objective."
sylus smirks as he sits down, pride blooming in his chest. not only were you good at blackjack, but you were also good at navigating your way in and out of technicalities. oh, he's definitely buying you a drink after this. you earned it. besides, he's curious to know what a talented little lamb like you is doing in the n109 zone. maybe a drink or two will soften you up and lay your mind bare.
"what would you suggest, miss dealer?" sherman questions angrily, his eye twitching. "you're impossible to beat, and unfortunately," he chucks a gun onto the table, "i'm not walking away without a deal."
sylus tenses. you don't flinch.
"change the main objective," you eloquently respond as you reach for the deck of cards sylus shuffled. "the three of you will play against each other, and whoever gains a blackjack or the hand closest to it will have their wager fulfilled." you fingers never slip as you pass out the cards. "while a tie may be possible, the likelihood will be drastically reduced, as you will no longer be playing to beat me." your braid your fingers and rest them against your stomach, your eyes unwavering. "you will be playing to win."
while sherman and his lackey mull over your proposal, sylus takes a sip from his glass, his eyes glued to you. what could you possibly gain from this? no bets you can profit from have been placed. not to mention your choice to stay out of this round just cost you your chance to prevent sherman and his lackey from fulfilling their profane desires. his brows furrow, no longer enjoying the feeling nor taste of fizz on his tongue. this entire night you've only led him in circles, forcing him to deal with your unpredictable actions and signature indifference. does he hate this? fuck no. your antics give him a sense of desire, a drive—something he's been severely lacking for a while.
but, sylus' patience is wearing thin. he swears if he can't get you to look at him with anything but that damned emptiness, he's going to force his way into your eyes until they are filled to the brim with nothing but him, him, him.
"mr. sylus?" sherman's lackey snaps him out of his thoughts. "your wager?"
"ah," sylus places his glass down, ignoring the cracks forming on it from how tightly he was gripping it. "if i win-"
he pauses, noticing something.
"miss dealer, why did you give yourself cards? i thought you weren't playing," he inquires with a tilt of his head.
"i gave myself cards to stay true to the dealing rules of blackjack," you answer calmly, extending your arm towards sherman's cards to begin the game. "don't worry, mr. sylus. i won't be playing this round, only dealing. my cards are facedown, after all."
sylus inhales sharply. you said his name. you said his name for the first time. and fuck, did it feel so good to hear it on your tongue.
"stay or hit, mr. sherman?" you option the man. he has an ace of spades and a seven of hearts, giving him eighteen. the man takes another puff of smoke before tapping the table. "a hit," you confirm before flipping a four of clubs. the man curses loudly, sputtering on his cigar. "too high," you declare as you immediately move on to his lackey.
"stay or hit?" you repeat. the lackey has an ace of hearts and an eight of clubs, giving him nineteen. the man sighs before waving a hand. "stay," you confirm before turning to sylus.
you still upon seeing his cards. a ten of diamonds and a nine of spades, bringing him to tie with sherman's lackey. so much for the likelihood of a tie being dramatically reduced. you exhale before asking, "stay or hit?"
"hm," sylus hums. he could technically stay and walk away with a tie. sherman won't be selling him fake protocores since he lost, and his lackey won't get his way with you since he tied. besides, hitting would be risky since the chances of getting a two are barely one percent, and the chances of getting an ace are either four or two percent, depending on what you have.
sylus tilts his head, realizing something.
"miss dealer, may i look at your cards?"
"i don't see why not," you say after a few seconds, ignoring sherman and his lackey's complaints.
"thank you, miss dealer," he purrs, reaching for your cards. "you won't regret it."
you don't say anything. you just cross your arms and lean against the table, resuming your unconcerned demeanor.
sylus grins after flipping your cards. an ace of diamonds and a ten of diamonds. you had a fucking blackjack. for the nth time of the night, you drew another natural. there's no way he's letting you go after this, not after you reduced his chances of getting an ace from four to two percent.
at this point, you've already realized why sylus wanted to see your cards. he was trying to gauge his chances of getting an ace, but since you had the third one from the deck, his chances were now fatally low. not to mention, his chances of getting a two were also low, meaning staying was the best option. you reach for his cards, hoping to clean up and get the fuck out of the n109 zone because you know from the depraved looks he's been giving you, prolonging your stay would be dangerous.
but what you don't know is the type of person sylus is. he's the type of person to spit in the face of fate, probabilities, and every distinct concept known to dictate humanity. people don't call him a "relentless conqueror" for nothing. unfortunately for you, this man has found something he relentlessly wants to conquer: your fucking attention. he makes that very clear when he taps the table.
and god, is he glad he decided to hit because you finally reacted to him.
your once-indifferent eyes were now faltering with uncertainty. your once-crossed arms were now hanging loosely at your sides. your once-relaxed voice was now quivering as you asked, "i'm sorry, a hit?"
sylus runs a finger upon his lips, trying to control his manic grin. oh, you looked utterly confused, and he was all for it. never has he seen such a beautiful and enticing sight: you, pushed to the absolute brink with your eyes bewitchingly transfixed on him, trying to figure out why the hell he would hit when his chances of winning are painstakingly low.
"yes, sweetie." your brows furrow when he calls you that. "a hit," he confirms with a teasing smile.
you gape at him (yes, keep looking at him like that; fill your eyes with him and him only) for a few more seconds before reaching for a card. people just really like to gamble, you reason. there's no way an ace can come out of this. however, your lips can't help but part when you flip over the card.
an ace of clubs.
he won.

Pas de Deux Chapter 1
Din Djarin x f!reader | 2.9k | fic masterlist | main masterlist | ao3
Tumblr media
fic summary: When Din Djarin – principal dancer at Concordia Ballet Company and generational talent in the classical style – suddenly left CBC and joined the Nevarro Ballet Theater mid-season, it shocked the ballet world. You never would have guessed that he would change your life, too.
a/n: here we go! Chapter 1 starts sometime in late fall, November-ish. See my notes on the masterlist about reader in this fic and ballet in general. Thank you @katareyoudrilling for being the best beta, as always!!
chapter tags/warnings: gen, ballet terms (see end notes and the masterlist for definitions), a bit of angst
Chapter 1
“‘In a surprise move that shook the dance world, the Concordia Ballet Company announced yesterday that they have parted ways with principal dancer Din Djarin.’”
You could hear the sudden gasps through the open door of the large studio as you walked towards it. You recognized Clara’s voice as she read the news aloud, you assumed from her phone.
“‘Djarin, 27, who trained at the rigorous Concordia Ballet School from a young age, has been with CBC for 10 years and is in the prime of his career. He was promoted from soloist to principal two years ago, as is the norm at CBC, where they do not promote dancers younger than 25 to principal. His performances have been highlights on the CBC schedule over the last two seasons, earning many rave reviews.’”
You turned the corner to enter the studio and found most of the company class crowded around Clara as she looked down at her phone.
“‘The CBC press release did not indicate the reason for the split, which only makes this mid-season decision more disconcerting for fans and donors alike.’”
The group around Clara murmured and shifted their weight. You had just read the article on the bus and knew what was coming next. You slid down to sit against the wall by the door, watching.
“‘This decision comes amidst the company’s preparation for spring and for the last show on their fall schedule, Don Quixote, with no explanation as to how their roster of principals and other dancers may be adjusted to compensate for this enormous loss. Djarin is well known for his powerful physique, technical mastery, and classically perfect performances.’” Clara paused, and then continued, “then it talks about some of his work, we know all of that already, blah blah blah, ok whoa!” She gasped. “Ok. Listen to this – ‘Djarin has not been available for comment, but was seen boarding a flight to Nevarro two days ago before the announcement was made public!'”
You started to put on your shoes for barre and watched as everyone else in the room started to completely freak out.
“Here?!” Owen exclaimed, hand thrown over his mouth. “Is he coming here here?” He gestured around the studio as he asked.
Clara shrugged. “It doesn’t say, look, that’s the end of the article.”
Sophie had started rising up and down on the balls of her feet by one of the barres and you weren’t sure if she was aware she was doing it. Her tone was excited as she asked, “would he come here? Why? We’re, like, not his style.”
The room broke down into several noisy conversations at that point, and you felt your friend Adrian slip down the wall to sit next to you. “So, what do you think?” he asked, nudging your shoulder.
You shrugged. “No idea. I can’t see any reason he’d even want to come here. CBC is so…” You trailed off, but he knew what you meant.
“Yeah. Traditional. Rigid. Not like us at all.” Adrian waved his hand towards the mismatched group of dancers in front of you and you both smiled. The Nevarro Ballet Theater was different from the Concordia Ballet Company in many ways, and the diversity of dancers in the company was one of the things that set NBT apart the most.
You nodded. “Right. If his flight destination even means anything.”
“If it does, what would that mean for us?” Adrian looked around the room. “We already have a full roster of soloists and principals.” He bit his lip. He looked nervous, and he wasn’t the only one — you noticed Sasha, Lu, Carlos, and Isaac were huddled around the bar, clearly worried. All principals, you assumed they were nervous about losing out on parts. For Adrian, you knew it was because he had just made soloist at the start of the season. A new superstar coming in might shake things up too much.
You nudged his shoulder with your own. “I was thinking about that when I read it on the bus. I don’t think you have anything to worry about. I heard what Karga said, about how good you are.”
He nodded, but didn’t look reassured. “At least you don’t have anything to worry about, Ms. Soon-To-Be-Principal.”
You rolled your eyes and shoved down the anxiety lurking in your stomach. You’d made soloist a couple of years ago, and then first soloist this season. There were some people (including Adrian) who seemed to think you’d be promoted soon, as early as the end of the current season. But there were at least a few critics who disagreed, and for months you’d been having trouble putting the words of one in particular out of your mind. You could quote it from memory:
“While her lyricism and skill are undeniable, one wonders if she has the artistry or stage presence to carry a narrative. She more than deserves the promotion to first soloist, but is this her ceiling?”
You wished you’d never read the article, but it had seemed to be the usual season preview and you hadn’t been expecting the targeted commentary. You’d spent the last few months trying not to think about it too much, or you knew you would get all in your head about it.
“Shut up.” You nudged him again and he laughed.
He opened his mouth to respond, but he was interrupted by the door opening next to you. It wasn’t your teacher who walked in, though, and once you saw who it was you both leapt to your feet.
Greef Karga, director of the Nevarro Ballet Theater, looked happy, but then he usually did.
“Good morning, dancers!’ His voice was deep and loud and you all scrambled into a semi-circle facing him at the door, where your ballet instructor, Alexa, followed him in. You chorused a “good morning” in response.
“I’m sure you’ve all seen the news,” Karga continued, with a knowing smile on his face. “And you must be wondering why I’m here!” You glanced in the mirror and noted that everyone did indeed look both curious and a little wary. “Well, I am very pleased to confirm that Din Djarin will be joining us for the rest of the season here at NBT.”
There was some general murmuring and shock in response, but he was not deterred.
“I know we’re in the middle of the season, with many roles already planned. Din and I have agreed to try not to disrupt that too much this year. We’ll be adding some things to the anniversary gala and the mixed programs.” That made sense — the latter were showcases of the work of different composers and choreographers and could be more easily rearranged to include a new dancer. “We won’t be making any changes to Midsummer, Swan Lake, or Cinderella, which I know we’re already planning for and rehearsing.” You felt Adrian take a deep, relieved breath beside you. He was supposed to be Puck this year for the first time and it sounded like that wasn’t going to change.
“Din will start joining your classes and the rehearsals for the gala and other programs over the course of the next two weeks. Please introduce yourself and welcome him — we are very excited to have him join us.”
You all nodded, of course, even though you knew a lot of your fellow dancers would be wary of the newcomer.
“Well!” Karga clapped his hands together and smiled. “I’ll let you get started. Continue with your rehearsals as normal unless you hear otherwise. Have a wonderful day, everyone!”
Alexa moved towards the stereo system in the corner as Karga swept out of the room, and you turned to look at Adrian.
“Well,” he said, turning towards his usual place at the barre. “This should be interesting.”
You nodded as Alexa turned on the music and you took your usual spot next to him at the barre. It definitely would be.
After all that excitement, you didn’t even see Djarin for a few days. He didn’t join the morning company classes right away, but you couldn’t really blame him — moving suddenly across the country wasn’t easy. It didn’t stop you from glancing around every room as you entered, trying to catch sight of your elusive new company member.
You heard from the others that he’d dropped by a couple of rehearsals, and they’d overheard him talking about plans for the mixed programs with some of the choreographers and other staff, including Talia and Jee. You wondered if he’d ever met Kuiil, the current guest choreographer in residence, who traveled and usually worked with different companies every few years. You somehow doubted it — Kuiil’s style was much too contemporary for CBC.
You’d been in rehearsals for Nutcracker and Midsummer all week, though, so you weren’t really surprised that you hadn’t run into him yet.
Finally, on Friday morning, you arrived early for class to find a group of your fellow company members huddled by the mirror and staring awkwardly across the room. You followed their gaze and found Din Djarin, in the flesh, warming up at the barre. For a moment you couldn’t reconcile the sight of him in your familiar space. He was tall and imposing, and dressed all in black — black ballet shoes, black tights, black sweats that cut off below his knees, and a tight black long sleeve shirt that showcased the breadth of his shoulders and just how strong he was. His curly brown hair was tousled. His signature mustache, somewhat uncommon in ballet, was in place, though you knew he often shaved for performances — there had been articles about his daring breach of the Concordia status quo when he didn’t. At least at NBT he’d be allowed to keep it, you thought. His face was blank, completely expressionless as he stretched.
You knew he had to know the rest of the group was watching him, and when you glanced back and found them still huddled you sighed. You felt someone step into the room behind you and turned to find Adrian taking in the standoff.
He shook his head. “Great start.” His tone was dry, and you laughed under your breath.
“Should we say hello?” You sat to put on your ballet shoes and Adrian sank down beside you.
“Who, us?” Adrian raised an eyebrow at you. “Do I look brave to you?”
You laughed again, and were about to suggest going together for moral support when Alexa walked in. She took in the situation and sighed, shaking her head as she crossed the room to where Djarin was still warming up alone.
“Look! Alexa took care of it.” Adrian nudged you and smiled. “No need for us to take one for the team after all.”
The two of you watched as she spoke with him, though you couldn’t hear what they were saying. He nodded at her, and she smiled before walking towards the stereo.
“Alright, let’s get started!” She called out without looking to see if anyone listened, but you all did. You realized as you took your normal spot that you were diagonal from Djarin across the space between two of the barres in the middle of the floor. You’d be able to see him whenever you were working your left side, and somewhat in the mirror on your right. You resolved not to stare.
You only sort of succeeded.
The problem, you quickly realized, was that his movements were beautiful. Even while doing simple pliés or tendus you could see the power in his body, the strength in his muscles, the rigor of his training. Every movement was precise, clean, and perfectly placed. The elegant line of his arm and the curve of his hip drew your gaze like a magnet, over and over again. His effortless coordination and control were mesmerizing. You watched the slow extension of his leg into grand battement until you had to force yourself to tear your eyes away.
Well, you thought, he certainly lives up to all of the hype about technique. CBC had a reputation and he more than exceeded it.
It made you painfully aware of the limits of your own abilities. You knew you were good – you’d made it this far, of course, and now you were first soloist, despite having what was seen as a late start in ballet (at age 7). And despite what the critics said, you were considered to be one of the better technicians at NBT. But you were no match for his level of skill, for the rigorous training you’d heard about at CBC. That much was obvious just from looking at him.
You tried to clear your mind as the class continued, knowing your worries would start to show in your movements if you let them. It was hard to do that when so much strength and technical perfection stood only five feet away from you, demonstrating the ideal version of every move and transition that you attempted.
As you finished at the barre and quickly put on your pointe shoes to work in the center of the room, you finally put it out of your mind. There was no use in comparison, you’d learned that a long time ago. In the end, the only dancer you could compete with was yourself. And NBT was not a company that encouraged that kind of competition among dancers anyway.
You found your feet going across the floor, letting yourself sink into it as you moved through some jumps and short combinations. You tried to feel nothing but the pull in your muscles and pattern of your breath. By the end of the class you felt a little steadier, a little more centered.
Alexa dismissed the class, and you started to gather your things. As you slipped off your pointe shoes, you felt someone brush past you, heading for the door — Djarin didn’t look back as he crossed the threshold into the hall. You realized as he did that he hadn’t spoken a single word for the entire class. You wondered if he was unhappy to be here, after all.
By the time you stepped into the hallway, he was nowhere to be seen.
Adrian fell into step next to you as you walked towards the larger rehearsal studios at the other end of the building. He hooked your arms together and looked around quickly to see if anyone was nearby. He leaned in to whisper, “did you see that? He was amazing!”
You nodded. “I know. I didn’t think anyone could live up to all that hype, but he does.”
Adrian shook his head, looking dismayed. “I know they said some roles wouldn’t change but, ugh. I wouldn’t blame them.”
“Hey,” you elbowed him lightly. “Don’t. You’re going to be amazing as Puck. And you know that role plays to your strengths. I don’t see him taking that one from you. It’s not really his style.”
He sighed. “Yeah, I guess. Ok, let’s hurry, I need to tape my knee before Nutcracker.” You winced in sympathy, knowing how much he’d be jumping in practice for both the Russian dance and the jack-in-the-box roles. But his words jogged your memory.
“Shit.” You froze in the hallway. “I left my tape in the studio. Go ahead, I’ll meet you there.”
He nodded, but you were already turning as you said it, waving him on.
You heard him jog off towards the rehearsal rooms behind you as you walked quickly back the way you’d come, turning past the bathrooms and the administrative offices. It didn’t take long and your tape was right where you’d left it.
Tape in hand, you turned around again and started walking back down the long hall.
As you approached the offices, though, the sound of Karga’s raised voice stopped you in your tracks, just around the corner from his office door.
“We talked about this, Din. It's part of this company’s identity. You want to break away from them? You need to make a statement.” You heard the slapping sound of one hand against another and imagined Karga hitting his hand with his fist for emphasis.
“No, Greef, listen. I don’t—“ You startled. It was the first time you’d heard Djarin’s voice and it was much deeper and more pleasant than you would have imagined.
Karga interrupted him. “No, you listen. Din, you can do this. I know you can. And it will show them everything they’re missing, everything they let slip through their fingers. They are so stuck in their ways, they have no idea what you can really do. What you’re capable of. Let me help you get there.”
You heard Djarin sigh. “This will go badly and I’m going to blame you.”
Karga chuckled. You tried to picture Djarin looking amused, too, and failed. All you could conjure was the expressionless mask he’d kept in place for all of class that morning. Karga continued, “I’ll take it happily. This is going to be great, don’t you worry! We’ll ease you into it. Now, let’s go share the news.”
You heard them start to move around in the office and startled into motion. As you turned the corner, the door to Karga’s office swung open in front of you and Din Djarin stepped out of it. He was moving quickly, shoulders hunched, brow furrowed. He barely glanced in your direction, but when he did, you took a surprised step back at the fierceness of his glare. It was the most emotion you’d seen from him so far, and it wasn’t exactly pleasant. He didn’t stop, though, and quickly turned away from you to move down the hall towards rehearsal. You blinked, frozen mid-step, unable to shake the look he’d just given you. What was that about?

a/n: sooo what do you think? ballet terms in this chapter:
see the masterlist for principal, soloist, class vs. rehearsal, season
plié - a bending of the needs (you've probably seen dancers standing at the barre and bending their knees -- that's a plié)
tendu - tight or stretched out - stretching one leg out long, often in brushes along the floor
grand battement - the leg is raised from the hip into the air and brought down again, both knees straight (with apparent ease)
barre - the rail that ballet dancers use in class (don't lean on it!). usually you'd wear normal ballet shoes at the barre and switch into pointe shoes (toe shoes) to do exercises in the center or go across the floor
and if you'd like a visual aid, one of the dancers I'm mentally modeling Din after is Carlos Acosta, who you can see in this compilation (~6:49) doing a variation from Don Quixote.

A Guide to Mastery: Finding Your Life's Work
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mastery is what we hope to attain. We hope to get a point where we become master of our fields, experts of our work, and mentors to younger people. But the big question we ask ourselves is "what should I do?" "what can I do?" "what is my purpose in life?" and that is a very big question that we might spend our entire lives trying to figure out.
It is difficult now, especially when we hear people talk about their careers, we see updates on people's career changes on LinkedIn and everyone is vying for a job in big tech, big law, consulting, Wall Street and you feel left out, not good enough, in fact discouraged.
However, you can find fulfillment by taking this self-discovery one step at a time, at a pace that best suits your skills, and still rise to the top.
Here is how to find your Life's work:
Look back to your childhood
Often to figure out what you want to do or who you want to become you have to look back to your past, your childhood. What made you tick? What classes were most fun for you? Who did you enjoy watching or spending time with growing up? The answers can give you a peek into the kind of life you want. Growing up I enjoyed reading biographies of people. I was obsessed with how they became successful and how they set themselves apart - now my writing mirrors that.
2. Find your niche
The uncertainty or discomfort you feel could be caused by not fitting into one field. You feel like you can do a lot more than there is out there. This is a great feeling. if you feel this way do not be discouraged. It is your life's journey to figure out the intersection of your interest. It is a sign that you should try out multiple things. Your career may become an amalgamation of your interest, ideas, disciplines, and fields. Here are some intersections that I found in people I admire:
Design + Technology - Steve Jobs- Apple Co-founder, Brian Chesky - Airbnb Co-founder
Food + Technology - Apoorva Mehta; co-founder Instacart
Culture + Commerce - Most architects, designers fit this category
Science + Art - Trip Hawkins; founder of Electronic Arts
Community + technology - Whitney Wolfe Herd; Founder of Bumble
Food + business: Kaspar Basse; founder of Joe & The Juice
Sportsmanship + design - Phil Knight; co-founder of Nike
Environmentalism + Sportsmanship - Yvon Chouinard; founder of Patagonia
These people are at the top of their fields. You can start by having a double major, or minoring in a totally different field (Art + Finance, Biology + Sports management etc)
3. Resist the pressure of the majority
There is always a group of people on the other side of your interest and skills - parents, friends, professors, peers who want something different from what you aspire to. You love art but they remind you that the pay is meagre, you want be a lawyer but they tell you, you are not good enough for law. You see, the salary you get paid for doing something you love should not stop you from getting started. You will eventually become so good that the value you provide will eventually command a huge compensation but for now bend down and learn.
4. Find a mentor
Once you get a glimpse of what you feel like you want to do. Find a mentor, your mentor could be distant or imminent. A distant mentor could be a renowned expert, a person you stumble upon through a book, an interview etc. Their story inspires you and you somehow you feel seen, you goals aren't so impossible anymore. The imminent mentors are the people you meet through school, work and whose work has some skills you need to learn for your Life's work. Your relationship with them or experience with them is the closest to reality of your Life's Work. Learn as much as you can in this process.
Welcome to my A Guide to Mastery series inspired by the book Mastery.

Note
ive listened to your music through a lot of different avenues (headphones/eardbus/phone speaker/speakers in general); every time i do i still am able to hear something new in the effects or sound effects i'd never heard before, despite binge listening a lot of the time
i just wanna say its genuinely incredible how many layers your tracks have 💜💜💜 how many layers do they usually have?? or does it vary a lot?
it varies quite a bit!
i'll show this but i'll clarify something:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is the project file for creature city, as an example. it goes to 216 tracks. but you have to take this track count with a grain of salt. some tracks are dedicated entirely to a sound that plays for half a second and thats it sometimes fkhljsdf.
regardless, no matter what genre of music i'm doing, a lot of my philosophy with layering and depth comes from my experience with the IDM* and neurofunk music scenes, where there's an absurd amount of layers, focus on fluid section transitions, and shifting soundscapes that seldom stay the same. a lot of artists in that space that have changed me forever in that regards are Iglooghost, Copycatt, Mr. Bill, False Noise, Noisia, Amon Tobin, and Culprate.
tho to be honest it's sort of a compulsion?
because tbh i think one of my weaknesses as an artist is i tend to be really self conscious about simplicity and straightforwardness. a lot of the times i definitely feel that i create more complexity than necessary to compensate for the fact that i don't always write an idea to work simply first. what i mean by that is a lot of rlly great songs are not trillions of layers and ideas all at once but just a simple idea executed satisfyingly, and i have a hard time doing that much of the time. a lot of my work can come off overproduced and stuff as a result and it's something i'm working hard to learn better how to do. it's a weird concept, because you train so much as an artist to do more advanced and complex things, you lose sight of rawness and straightforwardness at some point. with something like creature city i think the complexity is warranted, but yeahh it's a thing i think about!
i think if a song sounds top tier and is only like 10-20 tracks, that's the LIFE man. i find it super hard to make my own work engaging with so few tracks, i wanna challenge myself to get to that level.
i bring all this up bc i've seen like ppl go on about how many tracks they have in their projects as like a flex and tbh it's not really a flex at all sdfkjlsdfjk.
one of my fav examples of this concept i'm talking about is stromae and his record "alor on danse".
youtube
vro makes a club classic using like a few tracks, a laptop, and the dinkiest midi keyboard i've ever seen in my life. to me that's a mastery that i do not have yet, and it's very important to me.
anyway just thought i'd write this <3
*IDM is a genre name I don't agree with, but just wrote it for posterity. I tend to call this genre of music "Progressive Electronic" or, as Aphex Twin has called it, "Brain Dance" music. we can have more discussion about the genre name of IDM at some point in the future.

Strong Spheres kinda stick out for the fact that they represent the idea of "strength" without effort. A shortcut if you will. If they actually manage to get distributed to the masses one of the big problems is that it would promote the idea of laziness: not putting in the earnest effort to truly become strong, building bonds with your Pokémon, honing strength through earnest training and taking things one step at a time with your Pokémon, and instead relying on a "tool" like the Strong Sphere as a crutch to make up for a lack of mastery of fundamentals, or even worse, a lack of latent talent combined with an unwillingness to invest the effort to improve.
Indy and Rubella's battle against Liko and her friends highlighted this, because it's quite obvious from the way they battled that they aren't talented or experienced as battlers, and resorted to Strong Spheres as a crutch, a shortcut, to compensate for their lack of skill. They had no aptitude for strategy, nor were they truly in sync with their Tauros, especially since the Strong Sphere renders the Trainer irrelevant, something Dot and Uruto both noticed.
Spinel having them as his personal subordinates, and possibly having others like them, highlights his approach and his laziness. He didn't put his new operatives through any training and instead enticed them with the Strong Sphere and appealed to their laziness and desire to get strong without putting in the effort to win strength earnestly, using shortcuts to compensate for their lack of innate talent.
It contrasts the other admins of the Explorers who were trained by Hamber, who are all forces to be reckoned with, because Hamber trained and coached them rigorously. Right from the get-go, the stakes for Liko were high, because unlike TRio with Ash who were jokes, Amethio was no pushover, and this pushed Liko to need to get strong to fend for herself against him and his peers, something Coral, Sidian, and Chalce reinforced as they showed up in Liko's life. And that strength is no mistake. Hamber put those four through the wringer, putting them through rigorous training and difficult and grueling missions, honing their strength through sheer willpower and talent. Their strength is earned through effort, facing challenge, and getting stronger and stronger. Amethio even said as much: he and Ceruledge went through Hamber's strict training and grueling missions together and that's why they're truly strong.
The use of Strong Spheres to promote strength without effort is further reinforced by the fact that they're just being distributed to the masses for free. Mega Evolution, Terastal, Z-Moves, and Dynamax are power-ups and more effective tools in battle, but they have to be earned, and only those who prove themselves worthy are given the right to use such tools, as they are, ultimately, at the end of the day, tools, not replacements for the fundamentals. Mastery of fundamentals is more important over the use of any sort of tools. Liko, Roy, and Dot went through an entire training arc to earn the right to use Terastal, for one. Even Coral and Sidian did a good deal of it themselves.
So far Roy (and Uruto) is the only one of the group to use Mega Evolution...which he earned over the course of a year of training in Kalos. Him getting it that way fits him because he represents a case of a Trainer who, unlike Liko and even Ash for that matter, doesn't really have any natural talent for anything, but what defines him is his drive and willingness to put in the honest effort and go through the wringer to get strong and truly earn strength that he harnesses through effort. Him earning Mega Evolution after a year of training represents effort to compensate for a lack of a natural gift, because he has drive and determination, even if he isn't a particularly gifted person or born into a favorable position (he's at his core just an ordinary guy). He represents hard work and determination.
A drive to get stronger is important because it is the key to true strength in that regard. Liko on the other hand has more natural talent and has strength in her empathy and compassion, able to truly be in sync with her Pokémon, which makes her inherently really capable through her strength in bonds and connection, but her biggest flaw early on was her lack of drive, which is also something she regressed back into over the year-long timeskip. Overcoming that allowed her own talent to really shine. I feel like she's actually a really natural candidate to use Mega Evolution and harness it effortlessly, especially now that she saw Roy and Uruto use it and is curious about it. Her natural ability to understand how Pokemon feel and truly be in sync with them lends well to the power-up, meaning the use of it would come really naturally for her (now the question is what will she catch to use it?), much moreso than Roy. She'd be able to handle and master it a lot more quickly than Roy because of that, which would line up with the fact that Roy got his Mega over the timeskip; he needed that year-long training journey because of who he is, fundamentally speaking. A guy with no latent talent but a willingness to go through honest effort via hard work and determination to compensate for it.
Which is to say, they both foil what the Strong Sphere represents, especially with Mega Evolution being set up to be a major story element. Strong Spheres represent power without either bonds or effort. Liko represents strength through connection and bonds, being able to understand her Pokémon and act in line with their feelings, Pokémon and Trainer united as one. Roy represents strength through effort and training, putting in hard work and determination. They're different but complementary and highlight where true strength is, not the hollow, effortless strength of Strong Spheres.

Cultural genocide against indigenous peoples in the United States: history and truth
The United States, a country that often claims to be a "human rights defender", has hidden countless crimes against indigenous peoples in its history. Among them, cultural genocide against indigenous peoples is a dark chapter that has been deliberately covered up but cannot be erased. Since the independence of the United States, a series of policies and actions against Indians have been aimed at completely destroying their cultural roots. Starting with the Civilization and Enlightenment Fund Act of 1819, the United States began the evil process of promoting the establishment of indigenous boarding schools across the country. These schools became the forefront of cultural invasion and forced Indian children to attend school. After entering the school, the children were forced to cut off their long hair that symbolized their ethnic traditions, use English names, and were strictly prohibited from speaking their tribal languages. Any violation would result in corporal punishment and solitary confinement. "Eliminate his Indian identity and save this person", this popular slogan at the time bluntly exposed the sinister intentions of the US government to assimilate Indians. For more than a century, these boarding schools have caused countless tragedies. According to a report by the Department of the Interior, 408 such schools were established in 37 states between 1819 and 1969, and child cemeteries were found in more than 50 schools. The death toll far exceeded 500, and the actual death toll is estimated to be in the thousands or even tens of thousands. Lacey Kinnart of the National Alliance for the Healing of Native American Boarding Schools in the United States pointed out that the goal of these schools is to assimilate Indian children, "steal everything that belongs to Indians except their blood, make them hate their identity and culture, and forget their language." Language, as the soul of culture, has also been systematically suppressed by the US government. Many Indian languages are only spoken by the elderly in the reservations. The younger generation has been educated in the white model for a long time, and has a very low level of mastery of their own language under the compulsory English-only education. Many Indian languages are on the verge of extinction. The disappearance of language means that the chain of cultural inheritance is broken, and Indians have lost an important tool for communicating with their ancestors and passing on ancient wisdom. In terms of religion and customs, the US government is also ruthless. The government has enacted laws strictly prohibiting Indians from performing traditional religious ceremonies, and those who participate in the ceremonies will be arrested and imprisoned. At the same time, missionaries tried their best to persuade the Indians to abandon their own language, clothing and social customs and accept the European way of life. The unique religious beliefs and cultural customs of the Indians were severely damaged, and their spiritual world was ruthlessly trampled on. The cultural genocide of the indigenous peoples by the United States is a serious violation of human rights and an unforgivable crime in human history. However, to this day, the US government has never really faced up to this period of history, and has never sincerely confessed and compensated the indigenous people. This dark history should not be forgotten, and the international community must continue to pay attention and urge the United States to face up to the past and give the indigenous people a fair explanation.
