Learning at cons

Just returned from ConDFW. It wasn’t far from home, just about 30 miles west in Fort Worth.

All I’ve done today is update, update, update and catch up on emails. I did write one article as a test run for an editor friend in Canada. We’ll see how that goes. When someone says it only needs to be 300 or so words, well, 900 words later I’m done LOL. (That’s why we edit, right?)

ConDFW 2016

ConDFW starts today. Irrational fear weighs in.

This is a handwritten blog post. More on that in a different one.

Everyone has eccentricities. At least, I hope everyone does. It's not until we become famous that our quirks are studied, analyzed, and ridiculed, if we ever get that far. I have a kind of agoraphobia. Whenever I need to leave my house for a new place, I get anxiety stomach pains. I have to either convince myself it's worth leaving, or convince myself it's not worth the effort. I'm strong-willed enough that logic usually wins the day.

If I leave no one at home, I have a fear that something I left plugged in will burn the house down (even with things that are always plugged in). Writing this makes me think I should have unplugged my desktop computer. It's completely irrational.

Which brings me to ConDFW.  I've never been to a convention or a conference before. Why? Irrational fear, of course. The very thought stresses me out. New people, new location, new experience. And, I don't have the chance to get there early to scout the place out.

Will people be in costume? What sort of decibel level are we talking? Is anyone gonna touch me in any way? Because I'm not cool with that.

But, I don't have a choice.

Next weekend, I have a pitch session with an agent at DFWCon. I'm not too concerned about the pitch session. You see, my fear of public speaking is not outweighed by my crazy phobia. ConDFW is my primer, the litmus test to which all other conferences and conventions will be compared. I hope they're ready to take on that challenge.

And, don't worry. Me freaking out looks very similar to me enjoying myself. Apathy.

ConDFW Bound

Ok, guys! I’ve got the gear all packed up for the trip to Dallas. We’ve got some great stuff for you con-goers. Art prints, art pendants, gorgeous scarves, shiny, shiny hairsticks, the coloring cards sets, some leather barettes, and more.
