I don't know how to say it so that people will listen, but if you work at a business you should just accept that *unless your literal job is being the only one who handles wire transfers and you are professionally engaged ONLY in verifying that money is being transferred correctly* any request to wire someone money is a scam.
Our client is working with a company called (anonymized for internet example purposes) "Anaheim Sales" and have been communicating with them at their email, which is, deeply unfortunately, [email protected]
Client has been told by Anaheim Sales to send a check in the mail. They put the check in the mail, then get an email from [email protected] requesting a wire transfer instead. They cancel the check and they wire the money.
Now. A huge part of this is Anaheim Sales' fault. Buy a domain, dipshits. Your business email shouldn't be going to a gmail aim yahoo outlook whatever ass address, it should be going to [email protected] because it's a lot harder to scam your clients when you have to purchase YOURDOMIAN.COM than it is to scam them by setting up [email protected].
But also. They never should have wired the money. Even if it HAD been from [email protected], Bob's email could have been compromised. Even if it's in an industry where wiring money isn't something that happens only once in a blue moon.
If you are working at a business and you get a request for a wire transfer, you NEED to make sure that you speak to someone from the requesting business who you either know personally or who you reached by calling a known number for that business (KNOWN NUMBER from your vendor/client records; not from an email signature, and not from their website). If I were allowed to make all the rules, you wouldn't be allowed to make a wire transfer without a notarized request from the accounts payable department of the vendor.
This will slow down the transfer. It will make things take longer. But nobody doing legitimate business with you is going to be pissed if you take a couple extra hours to verify that they are actually making that request before you send them tens of thousands of dollars. If someone is yelling at you that you need to send the money NOW, that is actually when you need to stop and back away and escalate to your boss or get someone else from the requesting company on the phone.
"They said the contact I knew was out sick" cool don't send the money, if your known contact is not available you require a notarized request from one of the company's officers.
"They said they'd cancel the contract if we didn't get it out by this afternoon" then let them cancel you can re-sign a contract, even with a penalty, but you can't get that money back.
"They said that THEIR business was tied up and they couldn't do anything because they didn't have the payment and the check would take days to clear" sounds like a them problem; unless you get a signed, notarized request for a wire transfer you will not be sending a wire transfer.
And if you are a business owner you need to give your employees unlimited permission to say "yeah this sounds like bullshit I need to verify before I move forward" to anything that is even slightly suspicious. Your employees should NEVER be worried that they'll get fired if they say no to wiring money. You should give them a fucking bonus if they cause a delay in getting a *legitimate* wire payment transferred because they needed to get confirmation.
Wire transfers need to be a last resort, and you need to have policies in place that make them extremely cumbersome to use. The fact that wire transfers are immediate, efficient, convenient, and irreversible is WHY they're such a common way to scam people.
Also ffs please please please just set up a real website for your business there are cheap and easy ways to do it that will mean your clients are less easily targeted by scammers because they know that your email address isn't at *AOL INSTANT MESSENGER DOT COM*

The Invention of the First Coinage in Ancient Lydia
Money may take many forms, from the digital code of cryptocurrency to the woodpecker scalps favoured in early California. People have also used cattle, cacao beans, cowrie shells, chewing gum, grain, and giant stones as money. Early cultures became especially fond of metals, particularly silver, gold, and electrum (an alloy of the other two). These held their value (unlike a dead cow), were easy to transport (unlike a giant stone), and they could be measured out in exact amounts and fractions (unlike a woodpecker scalp). The only problem with metals is all the weighing. This adds time to every transaction, increasing the inconvenience and costs of doing business with bullion. There had to be a better way – and the ancient Lydians invented it.
Lydians Invent Coinage
In approximately 630 BCE, someone in the Anatolian kingdom of Lydia stamped a piece of precious metal with something akin to a signet ring. One outcome of this simple act was that it increased confidence in the lump’s weight and purity when later used in the marketplace. This procedure did nothing to modify the intrinsic value of the commodity, but it simplified the exchange of bullion for anyone willing to accept the stamp’s guarantee prima facie rather than reweighing and retesting the lump every time it was traded. Merchants could set aside their cumbersome scales, weights, and touchstones to accelerate their transactions by counting out, not weighing out, this new form of currency. The Greeks, who quickly adopted this Lydian technology, named the coins nomismata because they functioned as money by accepted convention (nomos).
That acceptance probably grew by degrees. The first time a fellow showed up in a Lydian marketplace with some stamped chunks of electrum, most of his neighbors may not have noticed or cared. The metal went into the balance pan with other bullion to pay a debt or purchase a lamb. Nothing differentiated the stamped and unstamped pieces until people could agree, by custom (nomos), that the message punched into the metal had special meaning. At that point, the object obtained the three essential elements of a coin as later stipulated by Isidore of Seville in the seventh century CE: acceptable metal, weight, and design. The stamps were rudimentary affairs at first, bearing messages in Greek or Lydian stating, "I am the signet of Phanes" or "I am of Kukas."
It must be remembered, however, that ancient peoples treated a seal more formally than we do a signature; the seal embodied the full power and prestige of the person associated with it. We might compare this to a document that has been notarized and not merely signed. These legends accompanied diverse images ranging from a lion to a stag, all hammered into the metal by a hardened die. Persons such as Phanes and Kukas (perhaps one a military commander and the other a king) stood surety for their stamped bullion in terms of its quality and quantity. Their prior involvement with the metal made it easier to transact business using it. To make this innovation even more convenient, coins were struck in seven denominations going down to a minute fraction (1/192) of a stater weighing less than a tenth of a gram (0.004 oz). This fact suggests a high degree of coin-based monetization, accommodating payments large and small across the Lydian economy.

"Poker Night"
Mystrade Monday - May 26, 2025
You know you can't fool me.
@mystradepromptsandscenarios
WORD COUNT: 952
Biweekly, Greg and his mates had a poker night. Tonight was a rare event: Mycroft had some free time. He was convinced he could bluff his way to a solid win, and perhaps build his reputation with Greg’s colleagues in the process.
Greg tried to explain the stakes to him on the drive there. “We do a non-monetary betting system, starting with things we offer the pot. But as more people fold, and the stakes get higher, they start throwing in more demands for the last hand lost.”
“They do?” Mycroft questioned.
“Yeah,” Greg responded, then paused. “I tend to fold early.”
Mycroft smirked. “I didn’t take you for a quitter.”
Greg laughed. “Nothing I can do when the cards are shit.”
“If the last hand lost takes on the demands of the pot, then what’s the penalty for early folders like yourself?”
You can read the whole thing here, or on AO3.
—
Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!
Greg slammed his glass down on the counter by the table, nothing but some bubbles left behind. Sally Donovan, the only woman at the game, approached Greg with a paper crown. On it, written in a drunken sharpie scrawl, read Coward of the Cards. “Being the first to fold is a right of passage,” she laughed out.
“C’mon,” a man at the table, one of his fellow D.I.s, stated, “we all know Lestrade’s afraid of commitment.”
“Says you,” Greg retorts as he sits back down at the table. “You throw all your arrests on your Sergeant's lap because you don’t want to be responsible for arresting the wrong guy.” This garnered some oohs from the party. “Hey, who’s on for a secondary bet? I’ll bet a fiver that Lake folds next.” He reached into his pocket for his wallet.
D.I. Lake rolled his eyes and fished in for his own. “Tenner says it’ll be your boyfriend in the clean suit.”
“I call your tenner!” Greg waved his hand at the dealer. “Do the thing.”
The game went on. The fourth community card went out. D.I. Lake folded.
“HA!” Greg put his hand out. “25 quid, please!”
Lake rolled his eyes and swiped the cash back at him. The bet-ception intrigued Mycroft. The game went on. In the end, it was only Mycroft and Philip Anderson for an interesting twist of fate.
“Loser walks my brother’s dog, thrice daily,” Mycroft bet.
“Call and raise,” Anderson says, an eyebrow twitching upwards. “Your brother handwrites me a formal apology letter for years of emotional abuse.”
“Woah,” Greg spoke up, tilting his head. “Anderson, the stakes need to be reasonable.”
“I think it’s doable,” Anderson responded and continued to glare Mycroft down. “Fold?”
“Hardly, Mr. Anderson” Mycroft responded confidently, leaning forward at the table. “I never fold under diplomatic pressure. Call and raise: You complete a written statement on record, signed and notarized, admitting to the raspberry jam incident.” He raised his eyebrows. “You know the one I’m talking about. When you, in all your forensic expertise, mistook it for arterial gush and documented it.”
Anderson stared at Mycroft with his lips pressed tight. Greg observed. Everyone was silent.
“I believe the file conveniently went missing from Gregory’s office. The fall landed on my brother when it was found half-charred in his fireplace. All that remained was a little gold paperclip, the kind that only you buy.”
Anderson slammed his cards on the table. “I fold,” he said in defeat.
They each turned over their cards. Anderson had two 3s, making for a four of a kind with the other two 3s on the table. With a 7 on the table, and two more lucky 7s in Mycroft’s hand, he only made out with a full house. He would have lost, had he not pressured Anderson to fold.
“Holy shit,” D.I. Lake commented, astonished. Everyone showed how impressed they were by the pressure Mycroft was able to apply. He could have had a junk hand and just a community pair and still won. Greg was smiling, a real subtle corner-lipped smile.
“I’d like a carbon copy of that record statement framed to replace that horrid skull above my brother’s fireplace,” Mycroft then added.
“Loser deals,” Donovan said.
Anderson scooped up the cards and began shuffling. Greg cut the deck, and the next game began. Bets began rolling in. A round of beers at happy hour, donuts for the office, designated driver for the next poker night…
The first to fold was D.I. Lake, and the Coward of the Cards cap was passed to him. Then Harrison, Sergeant to another D.I. who couldn’t make it tonight. Then Anderson. He couldn’t risk being the last one out again. Each person to fold was drinks down the hatch. For the last card placed on the table, it was down to Donovan, Greg, and Mycroft.
“Dishes for a week,” Greg bet.
“I’m not getting in the middle of a domestic,” Donovan said, “I fold.”
“Winner gets to choose the movie for the next movie night. I raise,” Mycroft then added, “no veto.”
Greg squinted at Mycroft and shook his head. “You know you can’t fool me, no veto isn’t a bloody raise, s’already implied.”
“Fine,” Mycroft sighed out and sat back in his chair. “I called.”
Greg smirked. “I call, you come to the next pub trivia.” Mycroft scoffed and rolled his eyes at that.
Bets were over. Anderson said, “show your cards.”
They both turned over their cards. Greg had a straight flush, the second best hand in the game. Mycroft had a royal flush. He won again.
“There will be no trivia for me, I’m afraid,” Mycroft said with a proud smirk.
“Cheeky bastard,” Greg laughed as he began to scoop for the cards.

WIP (5/?) - NR - 14k words
An Inconvenient Arrangement by @doodlingaway
“This story is set after the Sheffield dinner. What if Anthony was honest with Edwina regarding their loveless marriage? And then Kate proposes a marriage of convenience. Chaos ensues. It's a brilliant emotional revelation. Really anything by this author is A+!”
Description: After the Sheffield dinner, Anthony is struck by Kate’s mention that he would break her sister’s heart by calling off their engagement. He decides that a conversation is in order between them to clear the air, which goes about as well as you might expect. Kate is left to pick up the pieces and find a way forward for her family. Which, most disconcertingly, might just involve the one person who has caused all this pain for her family to begin with.

It was my first soul marks fic, and I’ve been in love with the trope ever since. Antematter is a fandom gem!“

Description: She is glad that Edwina managed to find a good match for herself - despite all of Kate's meddling and disapproval and interference. And after she goes home and hands the settlement papers to Mary with careful instructions regarding its notarization and safekeeping, she must congratulate her sister as well, sweetly and sincerely, and wash her hands off the entire affair. For she has now been set free.
WIP (5/10) - M - 28k words
A Promise Made In Haste by @waterlilyrose
“Hands down the best take on the 'What if Anthony married Edwina' premise that I have read. It's a very slow burn as the author takes the time to actually navigate regency era divorce (taking some liberties, of course). A really spectacular, thorough journey to their HEA.”
Description: An AU where Anthony actually goes through with marrying Edwina and Kate actually goes back to India. And Anthony and Edwina (after maybe a year or so into their marriage--which is going miserably by the way) go to visit her in India.

Today at work we had someone use a google ai search result for how to notarize a document for a real estate loan as part of completing an auto loan signing. 😐
The ai search results included: “if ID is not provided, two credible witnesses who can vouch for the person’s identity can be used instead”
We ran into issues because this was for an auto loan, not a real estate loan, and we have a comprehensive chart of what different forms of ID can be used for different things (opening an account, withdrawing cash, notarizing a document in the state of Arizona). The person in question wasn’t able to provide a suitable form of ID that followed our own guidelines, but that didn’t stop the branch manager from completing the notary anyway because she found a convenient result through google instead of keeping in line with our detailed established policies
#who remembers learning ‘don’t trust any random information on the internet as an absolute fact’ in school#ALSO!!! we have a huge chart with all the different forms of ID and what they can be used for#AND SHE WAS A BRANCH MANAGER!!!#personal#work adventures

Collin MacDonald came by the Rose house to discuss the contents of Lila's will, finalize Kathy's divorce with Reginald III Barber, and notarize the official adoption papers of little Catherine Rose all in one convenient visit.
"Now you're all set to meet someone new to go with this new life of yours," he said with a smile. In fairness, from his perspective, divorce often meant his clients were free to pursue their happiness.
But in the days following the recent whirlwind events, Kathy struggled to see much of a bright side to her new situation.
The weight of losing the people most important to her fell on Kathy not all at once but through a steady increase of pressure with no end in sight. First Lila, followed by Reg III, then Will, and even Vivian left too.
At least she had little Kate to keep her together for now, but we were far from what Kathy Rose imagined her life to be.

Contact Review in Thailand
Contract review in Thailand requires a nuanced understanding of Thai legal principles, business customs, and potential pitfalls that differ significantly from Western jurisdictions. Whether you're drafting an employment agreement, joint venture contract, or commercial lease, failing to properly review terms can lead to enforcement difficulties, financial losses, or legal disputes.
This expert guide provides:
Critical clauses unique to Thai contracts
Enforcement challenges under Thai law
Industry-specific red flags
Strategies for dispute resolution
Step-by-step review methodology
1. Legal Framework Governing Contracts in Thailand
A. Civil and Commercial Code (CCC) Foundations
All contracts in Thailand are governed by Sections 354-452 of the CCC, which establishes:
Freedom of contract (with limitations)
Requirements for valid formation (offer, acceptance, consideration)
Statute of frauds (certain contracts must be written)
Key Difference: Unlike common law systems, Thai courts may consider equitable principles over strict contractual wording.
B. Mandatory Protections That Override Contracts
Certain provisions cannot be contracted out of:
Labor Protection Act (minimum wage, termination rights)
Foreign Business Act (restrictions on foreign ownership)
Consumer Protection Act (unfair terms)
2. Critical Clauses Requiring Special Attention
A. Jurisdiction and Language Provisions
Dual-language contracts must specify which version controls (Thai typically prevails in disputes)
Forum selection clauses may be unenforceable if requiring overseas litigation
B. Termination and Penalty Clauses
Termination for convenience often requires minimum notice periods
Liquidated damages exceeding 20% of contract value may be voided
C. Force Majeure
Must specifically list qualifying events (e.g., "political unrest" vs. generic "acts of God")
COVID-19 precedent shows Thai courts narrowly interpret these clauses
D. Intellectual Property Ownership
Thai law defaults IP rights to the hiring party in work-for-hire agreements
Must explicitly address moral rights under Copyright Act BE 2537
3. Industry-Specific Review Priorities
IndustryHigh-Risk ClausesThai Legal QuirkConstructionDelay penalties, change ordersMust comply with Ministerial Regulation on Construction ContractsManufacturingQuality standards, inspection rightsProduct Liability Act imposes strict liabilityTech/StartupsIP assignment, non-competeNon-competes limited to 1 year/30km radiusHospitalityRevenue sharing, franchise feesHotel Act requires specific licensing disclosures
4. Step-by-Step Contract Review Process
Phase 1: Foundation Checks
Verify counterparty authority (check Company Affidavit from DBD)
Confirm regulatory compliance (e.g., FBA restrictions for foreign entities)
Identify mandatory clauses (industry-specific requirements)
Phase 2: Risk Allocation Analysis
Indemnification clauses tested against Section 375 CCC limitations
Warranties must specify Thai consumer law carve-outs
Insurance requirements (verify local policy availability)
Phase 3: Enforcement Practicalities
Notarization requirements for land/property contracts
ADR provisions (Thai arbitration vs. court proceedings)
Tax implications of payment structures
5. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them
A. "Standard" Templates That Violate Thai Law
Example: Automatic renewal clauses may be void if not prominently disclosed
Fix: Insert boldfaced notice above signature lines
B. Unenforceable Dispute Resolution
Foreign arbitration awards require enforcement petitions in Thai courts
Better approach: Specify THAC (Thai Arbitration Center) procedures
C. Hidden Landmine: Stamp Duty
Unstamped contracts cannot be evidence in court (1% of contract value typically)
Solution: Factor into signing logistics
6. Dispute Resolution Strategies
A. Pre-Litigation Options
Negotiation through Thai Lawyers (saves face)
Mediation via OIC (for insurance disputes)
Expert Determination (common in construction)
B. When Litigation is Unavoidable
Document all communications (Thai courts favor written evidence)
Prepare for multiple expert witnesses (common in technical cases)
Expect 2-5 year timeline for commercial cases
7. Expert Recommendations
For Foreign Companies:
✔ Always engage Thai-qualified counsel for final review ✔ Build in 30-day cure periods before termination ✔ Use parallel English/Thai versions with clear precedence clause
For Thai Counterparties:
✔ Request board resolution proof for corporate signatories ✔ Verify commercial registration details match contract parties ✔ Insist on wet-ink originals for enforcement
Conclusion: The Thai Contract Review Mindset
Successful contract review in Thailand requires:
Understanding what the law actually enforces (vs. theoretical rights)
Planning for worst-case enforcement scenarios
Building flexibility into long-term agreements

The First Interviews; Simone | Clarion News Network
Ft. @ianhale and @simone-montgomery
Ian smirks, looking at his phone screen as he lounges in the sitting room he was escorted to while the Del Bosque family debates his fate, and he fate of the family, but he hopes his words and his reveal have an impact. He opens his email to see a reply from Simone Montgomery, a local investigative journalist. He smiles as he reads it, an interview request. She's left her contact info in the email, so he shoots off a text asking her when she's free. When he sees that they can meet at his earliest convenience, his grin widens. The interview is set for an hour from now in a local Cafe out in Old Town, a good 40 minute drive from Casa Del Bosque. He hums as he stands up, and moves to leave. Someone he vaguely recognizes as also being dismissed from the meeting room tries to ask him where he's going, and to stop him. “I have an engagement I need to see to, then I will be back. Don't worry.” he smiles disarmingly, and thanks his mother for her insistence he learned proper manners and participate in extracurriculars that tended to be filled with more of the upper classes. Without having done lacrosse and select team football as a kid, and participating in Greek Life in university, socializing with families at least in similar social circles to the Del Bosques, he would’ve felt too scrutinized and out of place to do any of this. That said, this family he is tied to has another thing coming if they think he cant play their game. They likely will underestimate him, but he will use his middleclass smile and charm to his advantage, disarming them and lulling them into a false sense of security. Let them assume. “Seriously, I’ll be gone for maybe three hours, that should give everyone time to pick their side and debate, no? I will see you all for dinner, promise.” he says, voice earnest and eyes softening ever so slightly. “But I really don't want to be late, and I gotta get all the way down to old town. So, see you later!” he presses past with a wave and a smile. They let him pass with a bewildered look, watching as he finds his way back out of the winding halls of the main house. He makes his way to his car, and pulls out, turning on near-deafeningly-loud music to sing as he drives, windows down, to the parking lot for Old Town. The drive is warm and pleasant, and passes by with no incident as he gets into the city proper. He finds a decent parking space and parks. He checks his hair and teeth in the car mirror, leaves his vest in the car, and makes his way to the cafe. He waits for Simone with bated breath, trying to snack on a cookie to occupy himself while he waits. He thinks about the meeting he just walked in on and bore witness to. The fighting, the chaos. It is even worse than he thought it was, and such an influential family being in disarray… It’s like they've forgotten where their influence comes from and how to take charge. Maybe they really aren't fit for guiding Coronado anymore if they can’t even communicate amongst themselves. They squabble like school children, all of them. He sits back, leaning against the back of his chair, head hanging back as he sighs and wipes a hand down his face.
When he sits back up, he sees Simone entering, the jingle of the bells on the door having caused him to glance over to her. “Hi, over here! I am Ian Hale,” he stands and shakes her hand firmly. “I am Rafael's son, I have notarized document copies, if you would like, to verify?” he offers, and leads her to their table for the interview. “So, I am sure you have a million questions. I’m uh, pretty much an open book. Fire away.” he smiles with a touch of a smirk on his lips. Confidence clearly not a struggle for him, even in the face of telling the entirety of Coronado, and the world, who his father is. Exposing himself and opening up his life in a way he had never imagined he would, before now. And well, too late to back out now, so, he may as well smile his way through and let the games begin.

Beyond Paperless: The Unexpected Reasons Businesses Need Printers

In today's digital world, the concept of a paperless office has gained significant traction. With the proliferation of cloud storage, electronic signatures, and digital workflows, it's easy to assume that traditional printers have become obsolete. However, the reality is quite the opposite. Despite the push towards digitization, printers continue to be indispensable tools for businesses. In this article, we'll explore the unexpected reasons why businesses still need printers and how they contribute to efficiency, security, and overall productivity.
The Convenience Factor
In a world where convenience is king, printers play a crucial role in streamlining everyday tasks. While digital documents have their advantages, there are still numerous instances where physical copies are necessary. Consider the following scenarios:
Client Meetings: Despite the prevalence of digital presentations, having hard copies of reports, proposals, and contracts can enhance the professionalism of client meetings.
Legal Documents: Many legal processes still require physical signatures and notarization, making printers essential for handling contracts, agreements, and other legal paperwork.
On-the-Go Printing: In fast-paced environments, the ability to quickly print boarding passes, event tickets, or last-minute documents can be a lifesaver.
Security and Compliance
Beyond convenience, printers play a critical role in maintaining the security and compliance of sensitive information. While digital files are susceptible to cyber threats, physical documents provide an added layer of security. Here's how printers contribute to safeguarding sensitive data:
Confidentiality: Printing sensitive documents in-house reduces the risk of unauthorized access compared to outsourcing printing services.
Regulatory Compliance: Many industries, such as healthcare and finance, have strict regulations regarding the handling of sensitive information. Printers equipped with secure printing features help businesses comply with these regulations.
Data Protection: By utilizing secure printing methods, businesses can prevent unauthorized access to printed documents, mitigating the risk of data breaches.
