For decades, reading instruction in American schools has been rooted in a flawed theory about how reading works, a theory that was debunked decades ago by cognitive scientists, yet remains deeply embedded in teaching practices and curriculum materials. As a result, the strategies that struggling readers use to get by — memorizing words, using context to guess words, skipping words they don't know — are the strategies that many beginning readers are taught in school. This makes it harder for many kids to learn how to read, and children who don't get off to a good start in reading find it difficult to ever master the process.
[...]
Phonics is challenging for many kids. The cueing strategies seem quicker and easier at first. And by using context and memorizing a bunch of words, many children can look like good readers — until they get to about third grade, when their books begin to have more words, longer words, and fewer pictures. Then they're stuck. They haven't developed their sounding-out skills. Their bank of known words is limited. Reading is slow and laborious and they don't like it, so they don't do it if they don't have to. While their peers who mastered decoding early are reading and teaching themselves new words every day, the kids who clung to the cueing approach are falling further and further behind.

sleepover time 11 and 25?
hi!! thank you for the ask 💗
11. Did you make any predictions about either of the prequels? Did they come true?
i was not in the fandom when ballad came out, but for sotr i predicted that the book would be in haymitch’s pov. i said that it might focus more on D12 than the games, which did not come true unfortunately. i did think that suzanne would make beetee winning the 34th and wiress winning the 49th canon, i don’t know why or how i came to this conclusion, but i had a hunch and i was right!!
25. Do you have headcanons for any cultural practices for specific districts?
i have this post for D3 and cultural beliefs, but i have many more thoughts of it than just that. this answer will likely be much more culture focused rather than practices, i hope you don’t mind that hannah!
basic terminology for this is that the stills is the poorer part of D3 and stepanov is the richer area. midtown is where the small middle class lives.
also warning there are extensive mentions of sex and death in the following paragraphs.
stepanov is ruled by purity culture. entirely. due to the european majority in the city, beliefs that used to become from religious reasons is still prevalent in how people in stepanov approach the topic of sex and sexuality. sex is considered taboo, and is very commonly never brought up to girls until they’re married, and this “talk” is typically done by their husband instead of another women. queerness isn’t exactly “looked down upon”, but the older generation and old houses do tend to have a certain view of it that is more homophobic than anything. younger people and non-founding families are more open to it.
in midtown, it’s a similar thing. midtown is well known for emulating people from stepanov in a way to blend in with them when to people form stepanov, they will never “be one of them”. it’s a very rigid structure truthfully. midtown does tend to be a little more lenient with it though, and as more years go by, parents are more inclined to talk to their children about it before they marry.
people in the stills are taught about sex in school and by their parents. they learn the basics in the curriculum and any questions are directed to their parents or guardians. this is largely because both the low life expectancy for the working class and the population of D3 is so concentrated in the stills that children of reaping age even existing is dependent on people in the stills having kids. teenagers in the stills are “encouraged” to “start early” on having sex because the capitol needs kids from the stills for the games to continue. it’s also a culture thing, where there is a far lesser expectation of “purity” in the stills because they find it a “rich people thing” and the focus on staying pure is seen as very stupid.
because of the closeness geographically speaking of people in the stills (virtually everyone lives in apartment complexes, the rooms are very tiny), there is a cultural focus on community. your family isn’t just the people who you’re related to, it’s everyone in the same apartment building as you or on the same street. for an example, the latiers and the tellers (marie teller’s, fourth victor from D3, family) were very close family friends, and they considered each other family. after beetee wins, he helps the tellers stay afloat and when marie’s parents die, she comes to live with beetee.
stepanov is focused very heavily on appearances. very little of what is projected by people outside is true for them inside. it’s a lot of pretending you’re someone else and lying to cover up difficulties and problems. it’s considered abnormal to openly talk about issues, even with close friends.
saying this, living in the stills isn’t rosy either, besides the abysmal working conditions and the high likelihood of death whenever you go to work. because of theses things, it’s common for children to be taught to push feelings down because ignoring anger or injustice can make you less likely to lash out at members of authority, like peacekeepers, which decreases your chances of dying on the whipping post or by execution. to the surprise of no one, this ignoring tactic does cause intense problems later in life, but that’s assuming they don’t die on the assembly lines first.
…which leads to another culture thing in the stills: desensitization to death. the vast majority of panem has this due to the hunger games, but the stills sees its so often it’s less of a thing in their minds compared to other people. many children start working as early as five. people straight up die on the assembly lines all the time for many reasons (starvation/dehydration, fatigue, illness caused by chemicals or smoke, etc) and everyone else in the factory at the time is expected to continue work like nothing happened until someone can collect the body. typically this takes a few hours, but it’s taken days before.
jesus christ this got long. thank you for reading all of this if you made it all the way to the bottom!! and tysm for the ask hannah 💗
sleepover saturday

2012 TMNT HEADCANNONS :D
HEADCANNONS ON : what they'd do for fun ! + with reader (romantic / platonic)
warnings : none :)
..............................................................................................................................
Leo : - I feel like Leo would train for fun, but also when he's not being serious leader he'd come up with Jupiter Jim stories, ones of his own, a side of him nobody else would know
-What I feel like he'd also do for fun is meditate and learn techniques from splinter. the others think he's wasting time but all of this comes in handy in battle.
-When he's with !reader I feel like if you two ever hung out you'd practice and be active, jumping across roofs on Leo's shoulders/ back included !
-If either he or you are in a mood when you're hanging out, he'd bust out Jupiter Jim movies and watch them in silence until it becomes too awkward and one of you breaks the said silence
..............................................................................................................................
Raphael :
-With Raph, I feel like when he's in a private space of his own he'd not only play with his action figures but also make up a WHOLE plot line, I feel like he'd create a whole story, beginning to end, episode by episode. he doesn't tell ANYONE about this.
-as he would be, he'd also train like Leo but with his punching bag, imagining it was Mikey mainly.. but also the shredder and spider bytez. (he loves his dear brother Mikey.. really.)
-Apart from action figures, I'd also imagine him training with weights to you know, gain strength. but he might also go out on solo runs (maybe to find special edition action figures all for himself...)
-when this stubborn turtle is hanging out with !reader however, the big bad wolf persona falls down like straw, he allows you to join him in creating a bigger plot for his action figures and to also go out on runs with him.
-he may also spar with you (if you're up for it) as per his competitive spirit
..............................................................................................................................
Donatello :
-Donatello definitely experiments for fun, mutagen tests may not be too fun, but he definitely researches and experiments on smaller creature, for the biology of them n all.
-apart from tests, Donnie would strategize and play chess with his robotics, not only would he pay chess but he may hack into local schools to review their curriculum, maybe to learn more about what humans do socially but also to fix what was incorrect about the lessons they were learning.
-when Donnie is with !reader however, one situation you may be in is being his test subject. socially. poor Donatello doesn't understand much of humans in a personality side of things but because of you, he's willing to put down whatever concoction he was creating and listen to your human kind lessons, what to do and what not to do when approaching a person.
-a secondary situation in what you two would do for fun is stargaze. observe the sky together with a telescope of his (Donniefied though) , if you were intellectual like him, and obsessed with the stars, he'd most likely have fun just listening to your "ooo's" and "ah's" whilst taking in the glistening night above you.
-its either those or he'd buffer at the fact that you were actually talking to him (if it were romantic)
..............................................................................................................................
Michelangelo :
-Mikey is almost never bored. I'm lying. when he's bored, he's usually chatting to ice cream kitty about the day and what he wants to do throughout the say. although he never gets around to doing any of those things, but what he does getting around to do is watching ahead of his brothers in Jupiter Jim with ice cream kitty
-another extracurricular activity he'd have is spying on his busy brothers, watching Donnie and his focus in experiments, Raph and his action figures, and sometimes Leo and his rigorous training.
-if all doors were closed and he was STILL bored, he's go out to the rooftops with Casey and skate anywhere they could, maybe some risky races along the new york streets would be allowed too.
-when mikey is with !reader however, he'd just have fun entertaining you, cracking any jokes and any thoughts he could gather up inside his head, you two would get up in the middle of the night with markers and draw on the brothers as pranks too which would be all you'd giggle about.
-you two would also skate together, basically attached at the hip, you'd dance together, run together, sleep at each others houses (if you lived alone), anything you two did was together, 2 braincells are better than one
..............................................................................................................................
READERS NOTE :
I had a fun time writing these head cannons, I tried making it as true to the 2012 series as I could but also added in some bits here and there!
(PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEE REQUEST MORE!!!)

Chapter 4: [alt tab]
Shen Qingqiu was going insane. That must be it. The world was completely out of wack, but that’s fine. It’s all… fine. So what if Ning Yingying was apparently his Head Disciple rather than Ming Fan? So what if she was three, no four, times more mature and insightful then the Ning Yingying of his memories was at this age!
ẗ̫͢͠ǫ͍̼͇̏̉͊͂o̳̣̟̊͛̾ ̦̟̖̦̋̒́͐o̊͟l͎̤̳͎͐͛͛́d̡͚͒̑,̤̍ ̦́w̡̢̠̬̼̆̐̍̂͛hÿ̡̜͗ ȉ͚͉̓š͈̖̤̬̽̂̎ ̨̻͔̂̾͛s͔̺͉̬͈̑̿̍̀̈ẖ̡͕̗̿́̀̀ĕ̛̘̟͖̓.͈͙͗͑..̦͆?̦̃
Shen Qingqiu has nothing but respect for the responsible, headstrong woman Ning Yingying eventually matured into, so seeing it far earlier… was good. Excellent, no problem whatsoever, what do you mean Ming Fan was a Qian Cao Peak disciple??! If he was going to end up anywhere else, it’d surely be on Bai Zhan out of pure stubbornness, regardless of the fact he was more inclined to spiritual cultivation!
He shakes his head in disbelief. What is with this world? Surely time travelling wouldn’t have had this much of an effect. It must be System fuckery. Or perhaps… Airplane? The System didn’t mention if Shang Qinghua remembers the future, but if he knew- or even if the System was simply prompting him- surely that would explain some of these alterations? He sighs in frustration, a new fan he’d picked out after the unfortunate demise of the other currently fluttering in front of his face.
He’d certainly startled Yingying, her eyebrows had shot up in shock at the rather, ahem, noticeable overreaction at her presence. But he’d been really quite startled himself, and with barely a micro-expression alighting his face, he’d quickly directed the conversation. How are your studies going? Well apparently, she’d just learnt a new composition for the dizi – which she seemingly now favours. Good, good, how about those of your Shidi’s and Shixiong’s? They too seem to be preferring alternate interests, one even picking up entomology when previously they were terrified of bugs!
Really, of all the information he’s been carefully extracting from Ning Yingying, there was one in particular that interests him most.
This version of Shen Qingqiu was both more hands on, and less hands on then the OG he remembered. Where as before he had a stronger presence in both the direct instructing of (despite his obvious dislike of teaching) the students and their discipline (of which he took way too much pleasure from), this time he seemed to delegate the teaching far more.
Between the Elders proficient in their specialised fields of study, the Supervisors and Hall Masters in their more general knowledge of the core cultivation practices and Qing Jing Peak sword forms, and with a few core disciples tutoring as well, Qing Jing has created a far more structured approach to the disciples education. This allows for the intake and training of more outer disciples, and inter-peak learning opportunities. Shen Qingqiu of course, supervised and planned out the curriculum. And there was a curriculum, and actual lesson plans! The discipline was also far closer to his own than the OG’s, however still harsher than he could bare.
It had taken him years to try an undo what the OG goods had set in place before him. He had been arrogant enough to believe he needed to more or less dictate the classroom. He was distrusting enough to never truly give his teachers the means to adjust or adapt their teaching strategies for the disciples who needed it. It had critically hindered the disciples ability to learn and improve, and perhaps that was the point in the end. No one could displace him if they didn’t know all he did. He was safe from all opposition in that position of power. But that came at the cost of crippling his student’s growth.
Despite his best efforts he’d struggled to implement even a fraction of what he saw before him now, for too much damage had been done. The ever turning cycle of abuse had churned out resentful masters, resentful teachers, who sought to replicate what was done unto them, unto others. All trickling back from the source. He’d made great strides however, his students were happier, had enjoyed learning under him. So he had to dispose of some trouble starters, well, you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs! You can’t undo years of abuse, without breaking a few heads! Or something to that effect. So to have the set up of his dreams just handed to him? Well of course he is sceptical! What on earth would have led Shen Qingqiu v1 to not be as spiteful this time around? He rubs at his brow, lips pursing in frustration.
He’s instructed Yingying to walk with him towards the dorms, idly listening as she chatted about her day. All while carefully surveying the differences. That pavilion was new, there wasn’t a sparring area set up there, and oh look, young ones with unfamiliar faces. It felt like someone had gone into the bamboo house and rearranged just enough to set off alarm bells. Which had also happened. At least those changes were more in line with his own decorating ideals, and harmonised with the feng shui best suited to his own internal Qi alignment. Which… was concerning in its own way. Thinking on it was just leading him in circles, a useless waste of his already straining mental fortitude.
There they were, a crowd of little sheep staring up at him with wide eyes! A chorus of sweet, high-pitched ‘Greeting Shizun’ crying out in concert, only a bare hint of flustered panic behind it. He hides the curve of his smile behind his fan, and cast his gaze over for- there! Noticeably standing apart from the crowd, head and shoulders above them in height, Luo Binghe! The youth, fresh-faced and dewy eyed, was staring at him with a… strange sort of gaze. Not fearful or hiding hidden anger, but searching, almost... confused. His focus seemed, well, he was rather intently staring him in the eyes! Which, come to think of it, has been happening quite a lot since he woke. Was there..?
do̢̻͆͞n̘͈̞̏̑̽͘͜'̧̛̝͠t̨̥͌͠
“Disciple Luo, with me.” He motions with his fan, a gentle curving arc, and turns with a nod to Ning Yingying. She mentioned she’d been in charge of leading all her shimei’s and shidi’s through the chore roster this morning, and he’d already pulled her from her task long enough- even if he hadn’t known at the time. She bows back with a beaming smile before turning back towards her peers with the harsh bark of a general.
“What are you all looking at? I can already tell half these jobs aren’t done right!” Ah, she had it well covered. Go Yingying! Binghe blinks in surprise, and jogs up to greet him.
“Greeting Shizun, has this disciple done something?” To catch your attention or ire was heavily implied. Shen Qingqiu huffs, sending a sideways glance to the boy.
“This master merely wishes to check in on Disciple Luo. How has Luo Binghe been doing with his studies hmm? Has he been getting along with his martial siblings?” With everything that has been different so far, surely this too had changed. For one he was working and living around his martial siblings, so it was likely there truly hadn’t been abuse… surely there would be more trepidation in his demeanour if there was. His Binghe had been trembling like a hyperactive lapdog those first few years!
“Shizun, this disciple has been learning well.” He replies demurely. His eyes are cloaked in the shadows of his long eyelashes, sweeping his cheeks with each slow blink. “This one has no issues with his peers.” He once more hit Shen Qingqiu with that indecipherable look, head tilting like a snake looking at a mouse! Binghe you’re only-
h̦̬̖͖̄̅̾̑̏͟e̹̗̼͋̾̄'̭͖̠̞̆̐̽̍ṡ̭ ̹̦͑̓sup͇̈́p̗̺͚̀̈́̈́́͜o̥͆́͢s̪̣̤̄͗̊́͢é̏͢ͅd̥͍͉̃͋͞ ̗̲̃̍ṫ̰ọ̦͖̿̄̀ ̩̿̑͢b̖͖͍͓̃̔̉͘e̤̳̔̈́ ̩͋1̮͖͚͇̈́̽́̊4̧̮͉͖͛̒̎̃
- 17 years of age at this point. Shen Qingqiu tilts his head back with an inaudible sigh. A young man indeed, almost an adult, but still shedding the last flushes of youth. So, how do you manage a gaze that predatory?! His face suddenly lights up, as if he’s had some unthinkable realisation, his lips twitching into a glowing smile, black eyes sparkling like stars in the night, “Is that pleasing to Shizun?” His voice has deepened just a bit, low and silky in inflection.
…? Abort!
“I’m pleased that Binghe seems to be excelling in his cultivation and studies. It’s the joy of any teacher to see their student learn and grow.” He defers, feeling like he’d only barely managed to avoid a trap. Binghe, you have better targets to use that voice on otherthanthis old master! Luo Binghe’s smile grows even wider. Showing pearly white teeth. He once again tilts his head in a way that would be quite cute, if it wasn’t paired with an ever more unsettling light growing in his eyes.
“It’s the joy of this disciple also, to bring Shizun such joy.” He finally averts those eyes, his smile once more falling to ‘coy’, “It’s good to see you, Shizun. To talk to you. I almost thought-” He pauses, before shaking his head with a rueful grin, “Ah this one is being quite forward. I merely mean that Shizun seems so separate from mortal affairs, it’s like a dream that you’ve deigned to talk to this lowly one.” He bows, a shockingly poor attempt at ‘meekness’ settling over him in an uncomfortable skin.
This boy… If this is the way these disciples react, no wonder the original goods spent no time with them! He feels his eyes narrow and his brows furrow. He wasn’t unlike his Binghe, but he was also nothing like him at all! What happened to sweet fluffy sheep? His pure white lotus?! This boy was a wolf! It really was… quite different here. A pang in his chest, his heart aches.
“Disciple Luo should take more care with his words. They could be misinterpreted by someone less forgiving than this one.” Binghe nods frantically, his eyes wide and deceptively innocent.
“This disciple is thankful for the guidance.” An awkward silence begins. He… didn’t know this youth. He was a different person from the one he’d guided and cared for. And hurt. For all that had-
ȇ͜n̟̝̬̊̐͌d̦̐ed̢̨̹̉̿͘,͚̗͖͔́̅͠͝ ͚̖̓̀͘̚͟͢ȁ̡̫͠n̳̓d̩̱͐͡ ̜͘b̹̼̍̎̾͟e̲̤̓͜͞͡g̘̾ư̧̧̥̞̈̚͞n͙̿͛͜.̡̳͌̕ ̥̺̺͊͆́Ō̤̯͖̿̇ű̜͎̜̦͑̉͞r̻̅̀ͅ ̪̥̖̈́̍̈͗ͅs̼͓̟̋͒͌̄͟ṱ̙̔͡ō͉r̦͑ŷ̘,͚̹͂̈́̿͢ ̼̹̯̖̎͛̑͐t̗͠ṓ̼͖̳̇̚͢͝ͅg̻͓͚͇̅̀͐͌e̛̥̳͚̔̐t̜̚͟͝h̯͎̖̅̅̀er.̡̽.͉̓.͓͋ ͈͛m͓̙̊̽y͚̹̞̩̾̂̀͞ ̖̞̺̫̇͆̂͂̕͢h̲͘ủ͙̫̰̒̕s̛̘̞̝̫̰̃̇̈͝b̩͉̘͒́͂a̛͉͚̠̕͘nd̡̨̢̰̊͆̑͝.̙̙͇̟̰̆̆̽͡͡
He clutches at his skull, hissing through his teeth. These headaches will need to be checked. His chest ached strangely.
“Shizun?! Are you okay? Should this one fetch Peak Lord Mu-” He waves Binghe off with a hand, this old man is just fine thanks!
“This master is fine, merely still recovering.” Binghe’s face clouds over, once more sending him that searching look, before he finally nods.
“If Shizun is sure, and this one is not needed, he’ll rejoin the rest of his peers.” Shen Qingqiu finds himself nodding, a little shocked at his disciple’s sudden capitulation- something his Binghe would furiously cry out against- and watches as this Binghe bows before turning to leave.
~0~
Since joining Qing Jing Peak, Binghe has known three things to be true. One; though it will be hard, succeeding on Qing Jing will guarantee success in every facet of his life. Two; he was destined to be on Qing Jing Peak here and now, that fact could not be disputed. Three; there was something wrong with Shen Qingqiu.
The first one was obvious, Qing Jing Peak was run to the most strict of standards, everything taught was hand picked to ensure its disciples success in any of their future prospects – should it be immortality or otherwise. No one who left went jobless, their careers always flourish, and those who dedicated their lives to cultivation? A shockingly high amount of them gain reknown.
The second was less obvious… some would say insane. But before he’d climbed the steps to begin his destiny, before he ever stood on Qing Jing soil, he had known who Shen Qingqiu was. He has had dreams of this place, and the peerlessly beautiful immortal who governed it, for as long as he could remember. Dreams of what could only be another life, of a cruel master turned endlessly kind. Of failure, and success, of conquest and love. Of marrying the beautiful, kind, perfect person who hurt him so sweetly and loved him so fiercely. Of blood, of bone, of ash raining from the sky. Of him dying. He would do anything to bring this vision to life, except for his cruel final fate.
Shen Qingqiu his Shizun, was not Shen Qingqiu his husband. But Shen Qingqiu his Shizun was not even the cold cruel Shizun of his early dreams. Shen Qingqiu his Shizun was barely even a person. The second he laid eyes on him he knew, the cold genteel mask was not that of a jade-like immortal. It wasn’t hiding depths of emotion beyond his view. It was all this man was, strangely hollow. It was all in his eyes, the lack of anything resembling person-hood, almost dead inside. If he didn’t know better, he’d assume Shen Qingqiu was an empty shell being puppeteered by someone.
But then the peak was abuzz with the rumour, ‘Peak Lord Shen has Qi Deviated!’ and his hope grew. In the endless dream everything changed with a Qi Deviation, so why wouldn’t it change here too? For three weeks he waited as the gossip spread further, ‘High fever, he’s not waking! They’re doing all they can! He might not make it.’ It scared him, the uncertainty. Would he live? Would he change? Does it even matter in the end? Then another Qi Deviation. This one worst than the first. This one they were sure he wouldn’t wake from. But he did. He woke. Within hours the Sect Leader was chased off Qing Jing, and he was walking around like nothing had happened at all. But something had. He had changed, like a shapeshifter finally crawled into his corpse and brought it to life, and everyone can see it.
It was his eyes that gave him away. They held light, they were alive. They burned, and it was divine. For the longest time there was something wrong with Shen Qingqiu. Now, finally, there was something right. He just needed to make sure he stayed this way, and that no one succeeded in removing the divine spirit made flesh that was his new Shizun.
...But he might have come on a little strong… Don’t worry Husband, your future wife is here!

“Reedshell turned back to Nightpaw, a gentle smile on his face. ‘Nightpaw, you’re a super hard worker. If you can tell me about three herbs that I give you, I’ll let you have a whole day of break.’ Reedshell tucked his tail over his paws, waiting for Nightpaw to accept his offer. Nightpaw's attention turned toward her mentor as he returned with a smile on his face. While she was grateful for his praise—again, Nightpaw couldn't help but feel her heart sink at the thought of being quizzed. But she feared that she would have to get used to it. ‘Oh, well—okay okay. Let's do it.’ ‘Alright, here are your three herbs. One, juniper berries. Two, borage leaves. Three, mallow.’ Reedshell listed off the three herbs, running through them in his own mind. He knew she could pass one simple test. Nightpaw nodded and furrowed her brows in focus, listening intently to her mentor as he listed off a short series of herbs. Should be easy enough. ‘Juniper berries," she started, trying to recall everything she could. ‘They're purple, and grow on bushes. Usually not in season during colder months like leaf-bare. And they're commonly used for bellyaches. I think they're also used for breathing and give a soothing effect as well. Okay, now for borage leaves. They're a dark green leaf, and they're used for nursing queens to help produce milk. Also good for bellyaches!’ Nightpaw thought hard. Her heart pounded at the thought of not being able to correctly remember mallow and its uses. But something about all three herbs clicked for her just then. ‘Mallow—also used for bellyaches.’ Reedshell hummed in playful thought after she finished. ‘You… passed! You really know your stuff.’”
Check out this snippet from a member interaction in RiverClan, one of the five Clans in the River Territory! They inhabit the Wetlands north of the grand Gathering Island, and are led by Swanstar, an empathetic yet naive leader.
With power-hungry leaders and fierce wars bloodying their history, RiverClan is renowned for their power in battle. The Clan was founded on a militaristic approach to Clan life, so battle practice and spars dominate their training curriculum, and warriors are often eager to engage in conflict and prove their strength to their neighbors. They spend much of their time preparing for war and developing techniques that hinge on their unique affinity for the water, in which they hunt most of their prey and swim in the warmer seasons; they’re trained specially to recognize fish migration patterns, and use their understanding of the currents to identify ideal hunting and fighting locations.
In reclaiming their title as the most powerful Clan, RiverClan led the charge against DuskClan from the moment they stepped paw in the Oak Forest. When their leader Icestar killed Hawkstar in a descent from the high branches of the Whispering Tree, they gathered the other Clans as their allies and drove DuskClan out for good. Now that RiverClan has conquered their enemy and won back the trust of their neighbors, they’re working toward remodeling themselves and maintaining the peace for as long as it takes to recover from DuskClan’s effects and prep for the next conflict.

A Broom at Midnight Book Review

I originally bought this book because I was interested in different ways to achieve spirit flight, aside from those you can find in most beginner trad craft books.

Synopsis

⛧─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───⛧
Published 2021
"Preserved in medieval and early modern witch-lore, the image of the witch embarking upon flight has become iconic from a historic and folkloric perspective. In the accounts of previous ages, however, it was commonly understood that witches flew in spirit form rather than corporeal form, leaving the physical body behind as the practitioner voyaged into the otherworld to procure knowledge, learn charms, visit boon or bane upon others, and attend the spiritual gathering of the witches' sabbat.
In this unique offering, the author organizes the lore and charms of the transvective arts around thirteen central lessons and approaches in methodology, acting as gates through which the practitioner may cross. Some approaches offered here may be familiar to folk and traditional witches, such as via veneficium (by way of poison) and via equarum (by way of steed), while others, like via imaginibus (by way of image) and via tempestatis (by way of storm) draw on historic lore and charms in order to innovate upon old craft while maintaining the spirit that flavors these beloved arts.
By mastering the often overlooked work of sabbatic ekstasis, the witch is brought into direct contact with familiar spirits, powers of the land and of ancestry, and with the primal sources of witchcraft itself, yielding an inexhaustible and ever-unfolding curriculum of the art magical."

What I Liked
The book starts off with a break down of spirit flight being mentioned in different historical records of the phenomena to see what people in the early modern period were thinking about spirit flight and what witches used it for. I do appreciate that Horne acknowledges that a lot of the older academic texts use inappropriate racial language in some of the sources he chooses and that it's not a good thing.
Part of the beginning chapters is dedicated to preparing people for interacting with spirits, and compares it to taking a walk in the woods. Not all spirits have your best interest at the same time that not all spirits are evil and out to get you. They're their own beings that probably are going to act similar to the animals you would encounter while taking a walk in the woods. These chapters also discuss the hag body/fetch; what it is and how to connect with it (in the preparation exercises). There's also a decent list describing the different experiences a person can have while in spirit flight.
The last beginning chapter discusses some preparation for spirit flight, such as experiencing you hag body/fetch, calling a familiar, opening the crossroads, etc. These are laid out so that beginners ready for the next step can practice them easily.
The last thirteen chapters discuss the different techniques. Each one starts off with a story rendition of the technique, describing a witch practicing the technique so the reader can get an idea of what this may look like. It is never the same witch in the stories. One moment the witch is a woman, the next a man, and then non-binary (using they/them pronouns). After the story, Horne explains the historical inspiration for the technique, which can help the reader to personalize it while remaining true to source (if they wish). Some of the techniques have been published in other traditional witchcraft books, however there are some unique ones such as via tempestatis, which uses a storm to send forth the spirit, and via imaginibus, which makes use of the tarot (Marseille specifically).
If looking for more of a step-by-step setup, each technique discussed has a step-by-step tutorial at the back of the book for easy access.

⛧─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───⛧
What I Didn't Like
One of the preparatory rituals in the beginning of the book consists of looking at the moon. While I think this is a lovely little ritual, I'm left wondering why it's here and what it has to do with spirit flight. It seems a little out of place without an explicit explanation.
There also seems to be a conflation of the fetch with the shadow. Now, most people on the internet are talking about Carl Jung's concept of the shadow when giving journal prompts and discussing Shadow Work. Here I can't tell if this is what he means, in which case it is my view that these are not the same thing, or if this is a separate concept within some traditions of the craft. I may just need to do more research on this idea (which is hard to find outside of Carl Jung's shadow).
⛧─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───⛧

⛧─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───⛧
Overall Thoughts
This is a great book for people who want to play around with spirit flight techniques. I do feel like this gets into a bit more of an intermediate area so those who don't have their basics down may struggle with these techniques. There's unique ideas based on historical and folkloric records, while also giving the same for the most common techniques discussed today.
⛧─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───⛧

⛧─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───⛧
Conclusion
Spirit flight is a working that is integral to the idea of the folkloric witch. Having several techniques to try can help a modern one figure out what works best for them. This book can be found on Amazon, Scribd, Abe Books, Etsy shops, Thrift Books, Z-library, and more!

god ok I had hoped to carve out time to work on these job materials but I had too many other things on my plate today and was too fried at the end of the workday. I think I will probably need to take a day off work if I want to get rough drafts done by the weekend ugh. but what if I don’t use that time wisely and then I’ve wasted some of my extremely limited & precious PTO??
ok. maybe I will think aloud under the cut.
I can build the diversity statement around my past program redesign work I think, which was all focused on first gen persistence/success, and then I can connect that to my current efforts to make experiential learning more accessible by encouraging and supporting integration into the curriculum (most of these efforts have been thwarted by the extreme dysfunction in our office but I do have a couple wins and/or in/progress projects I can highlight). I think the core thesis of the diversity statement will be like… I approach equity and inclusion as structural problems that can most effectively be addressed by structural solutions—ie by designing our programs, courses, assignments, etc in ways that demystify the hidden curriculum, recognize the importance of soft skill development, intentionally cultivate a sense of community and belonging, and provide students with the scaffolded support they need to persist and excel academically. I think they probably also want to hear something about culturally responsive teaching, so I’ll have to think about how to string those ideas together and what examples I can cite there… hmm hmm. I should be sure to balance teaching and administrative work examples here.
cover letter can be straightforward I think… I don’t want to overthink it as I’ll have more space to be creative in the teaching & diversity statements. I want to highlight the wide range of teaching, coaching, mentoring, and higher ed admin work I’ve done… I think the core thesis here is that I am an experienced educator, administrator, and coach with deep knowledge of both the research + applied praxis stuff around student success and student retention in higher ed. I also have a very strong interest in and knowledge of experiential learning and embedding high impact practices into the curriculum, and as a teacher am always looking for ways to help students connect what they’re learning in the classroom to real world contexts that have personal/authentic meaning in their lives. let’s see I also want to highlight that I’ve worked in writing centers or as a writing consultant for a gazillion years and have a lot of experience with mentoring/advising, but will have to figure out how to develop a thesis that weaves together these different ideas so it doesn’t feel too much like a list of things I’ve done. I also want to have a paragraph where I highlight things that are specific to the college, as I genuinely think this college is doing some awesome stuff and would love to work there. hmm ok. I need to map this one out a little more clearly, like just figure out how I want to structure and sequence it, and what I need to include, but I think that I am genuinely like… a highly qualified candidate? and hopefully knowing that that will help me write from a headspace of strength/confidence instead of agonizing over each and every word.
teaching philosophy: this is where I feel like I might have to do the most thinking/writing from scratch, but I should also look at my past materials to see if maybe I’ve done more of this than I think. I am a little hesitant to use my woolf example in case they dismiss me out of hand as someone who mostly wants to teach literature not composition… but the woolf example is so good because it encapsulates so many of my teaching values and so much about the playfulness of my teaching style, and I think I can reframe it slightly so it makes it clear that the lesson was equipping students with the tools to write thoughtfully about a dense text… and I bet I can tweak the description of the assignment a bit too to better fit a writing class. hmm I will have to do the most brainstorming here I think, to really distill my zillions of thoughts about teaching into a core thesis, but I think maybe the basic ideas are that I use a highly collaborative, playful style that is intentionally designed to defuse student anxiety, foster a sense of community and belonging in the classroom, and help students discover their own voices and ideas instead of imitating conventional styles. maybe I can talk about three different areas: what I actually do in the classroom (highly interactive, collaborative activities that get students involved in creating and doing), how I build syllabi and design writing assignments (how I use assignment design to foster student voice, encourage creativity and self-reflection, and connect classroom learning to authentic real world contexts), and how I assess student work (using alternative assessment systems to give students greater autonomy, spark intrinsic motivation, and guide students towards valuing process over product in writing). I don’t want students to learn how to perfectly and uncritically replicate established forms of conventional academic writing… instead, I want to cultivate their understanding of writing as a mode of thinking—an extremely powerful, useful, and rewarding tool or set of tools for making sense of one’s own beliefs and one’s position in the world. but I also gotta balance the feminist theory-inflected stuff with the realities of community college composition courses… so I want to be sure to also convey that I rely a lot on using iterative revision + collaborative peer feedback to help students carve out clearer, more cogent articulations of their ideas… and probably should be sure I am talking somewhere about the way I would teach a developmental writing course. I really want to talk about the feedback cycle liz uses but I haven’t ever implemented it in a class (I’ve just thought a lot about how I WOULD implement it lol) so I feel like maybe I can’t use that. hmm ok. to think further but I actually feel like I have basic building blocks here!!

Free tactical medicine learning resources
If you want to learn first aid, emergency care or tactical medical care for real, you will need to practice these skills. A lot. Regularly. There’s no way to learn them just from books. But if you’re looking to supplement your training, can’t access hands on training, are a layperson doing research for your writing or otherwise just curious, here are some free resources (some may need a free account to access them).
TCCC
The current gold standard in the field is Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), developed by the US army but used by militaries around the world. There is also a civilian version of the system called Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC). Training materials, Standards of Care, instructional videos, etc. can be accessed at deployedmedicine.com. You’ll need a free account. This should be your first and possibly only stop.
There’s also an app and a podcast if those are more your thing, although I haven’t personally tried them.

Hey there. I had a question for you. I was wondering what kind of resources someone might look into if they were interested in learning more about Mormonism, particularly if the person is LGBTQ+ and also has a witchy spiritual side too? Not sure if the latter is relevant, but I thought I'd mention it anyways just in case.
oh boy oh boy this is quite a question. I do feel like both the LGBTQ and the witchy stuff are relevant because it kinda changes how I would approach it.
This is long so I put it under the cut
So, the official way to get to know more about the LDS church is to contact the missionaries. These are young adults who are dedicating 18-24 months of their lives to teaching people about the core aspects of Mormon doctrine, with the goal of baptism (usually within a month). They give out free copies of the Book of Mormon, as well as pamphlets that explain basic tenets of our religion.
That's not necessarily the path forward I would recommend to an LGBTQ person, or someone interested in the potential witchy/folk magic side of Mormonism. Most missionaries are young, and although some of them are queer themselves (I was a missionary and out as bi) most of them will be deeply steeped in the homophobia that is unfortunately all too common and perpetrated by our leaders. If a queer person wanted to get baptized into the LDS church, they would have to repent of any past queer activity and promise to live a 'chaste' life moving forward (no sex outside of a heterosexual marriage.) A lot of missionaries also will never have learned of the folk magic that Joseph Smith and other early saints practiced, because those things have all but been erased/denounced from church culture. Most missionaries aren't even comfortable acknowledging that Heavenly Mother exists.
That's not to say you shouldn't try if you feel called to the LDS church. We can use all the queer members we can get if we're gonna fight for change. But I just want to acknowledge that it is an uphill battle.
I would recommend reading the Book of Mormon, which you can access free online, plus there's an app you could download.
Saints Unscripted is a youtube channel run by members of the LDS church, where they talk about doctrine, culture, and all things mormon. Some of the videos get into some of the more controversial aspects of our history/doctrine, while other are just fun conversations about Mormon culture. I think it's a great place to go if you just wanna get to know some mormons.
Beyond the Block is a podcast run by a gay convert to the LDS church (like I said, it does happen!) and an African-american member of the church. They're on a hiatus right now but they have over 100 episodes so you'd have plenty to listen to. The LDS church has a curriculum called "Come Follow Me" where each week we are assigned certain chapters to read out of our scriptures (Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants). Brother Jones and Brother Knox talk about the reading from each week specifically from a perspective of marginalized identities. Although they are speaking for an audience who is already familiar with Mormonism, I think it's a good example of what we believe, and the Mormonism that I personally strive for.
Queer Mormon Theology is another personal favorite of mine. Although also intended for a familiar audience, I think it provides enough background information (and sources you can look at to learn more) about what Mormons believe, AND it explains how these core beliefs include queer identities, and why the current queerphobic policies should be abandoned.
Witchy stuff is more difficult to find resources for. I started with Early Mormonism and the Magic World View by D. Michael Quinn, but that's a hefty book and I don't know if I would necessarily recommend it if you are new to Mormonsim.
Most resources I have found online that explore Mormon folk magic are made by nonmembers, or exmembers, in an attempt to discredit or make fun of our founders. I've also discovered a few off-shoot groups that attempt to blend Mormon beliefs with Kabbalah (which seems like cultural appropriation to me) or psychedelics (drugs scare me idk man).
That being said, two resources I could point you to is this wikipedia article that is just like, an overview of some of the folk magic the early saints practiced. And this website which collects information about some of the less often talked about aspects of our history/culture/practices.
Most members of the LDS church don't know much about this stuff, or they just don't care. It doesn't really impact the typical LDS life, but as someone who is trying to expand my spiritual practice to include more magic/witchy stuff, it's interesting to me.
OH I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT. There's this music artist named Marcie Dawn who is a Mormon Witch. She has an instagram and here she is on spotify . She doesn't talk a whole lot about her personal beliefs, it's mostly ~vibes~ but I love her and I love her music so I had to give her a plug.
And that's what I've got for you! I hope this is helpful, sorry it's so long. Please feel free to send more asks/messages about this!
