I genuinely adore how much these devils love each other, specifically the way the nobles love their kings and the way the kings love their nobles. And, yes, they do love each other (even though some of them are incredibly complicated). I will not be getting into if these forms of love are healthy or not. They are devils. They are allowed to be fucked up.

Gehenna and Tartaros are pretty straight forward. Satan and his kingdom are clearly devoted to one another. Satan knows each of his citizens and they will fight to the bitter end for him and Gehenna.

Mammon's nobles belong to him (the phrase both he and they use). He would give them the world because he can give them anything they want while they would fight in his name forever. They clearly love one another.

Leviathan seems to have a surprisingly short temper and often hangs his own nobles and citizens, but he still loves them. He made the entirety of Hades for them. One of his victory lines is that, as long as the devils of Hades stand behind him, he cannot lose. He refuses to lose because losing means Hades would be at risk. It's the reason he is so harsh toward every little thing; he refuses to take risks with his kingdom. And his citizens (all of them) wear nooses because they will hang themselves if Leviathan dies. They aren't like Gehenna or Tartaros that will keep fighting until the bitter end. They will fight until the person they are fighting for is no longer there. Leviathan gave them a place to belong and gives them safety and in exchange they give him everything. And that cycle goes on and on between them.

Beelzebub, though never in his own kingdom and a total flake, still shows signs that he cares. He appears to have clones of himself running around Hell so they can always be ready to fight. In Amon's character comic, we can see that Bell returns to Avisos when asked to fight against incoming angels. Despite seemingly never wanting to be in his own kingdom and preform his duties, Bell is constantly fighting for it. His citizens will use force to keep him from leaving or bring him home, and he will fight against them. However, the second they tell him that they need him to fight (to protect them), he will return without hesitation. Don't get me started on his complicated relationship with Bael, because that's an entire other post on its own. Avisos just has a very complicated dynamic in general.

Okay, so in Pádraic's route, the Voice (presumably Caine) says something about how he is 'the seed from which we will grow anew'. In the Jester ending, Pádraic ceases to exist as he is assimilated into the Malkavian Collective. Meanwhile, in Kali's ending, it's implied that she's now beginning to be influenced by Zapathasura’s blood. My guess is that its Caine influencing her, and that she's intended for a similar role to Pádraic - the seed from which we will grow anew. In essence, a renewal of the blood as part of the cycle of Gehenna. Rejuvenating a bloodline so that its existence is perpetuated, and 'saving the Ravnos' as Reynard wished to.

But in Pádraic's Reckoning ending, the Voice wonders if it was 'wrong about the Raven' before discarding him in anger. Not him, but Kali, which on the surface is an odd thing to say when Pádraic made that choice of his own accord without Kali's direct input. But then I can see there being a couple of different intents behind this particular line:

The first possibility is that the Voice didn't intend for Pádraic to actually care about Kali. It constantly influences his approach to her, advising him either to encourage his first thought or to sway him to the alternative. It actively helps him to become someone that she trusts, someone that she believes is fully on her side and cares for her so that when the back-to-back betrayals come, it is as devastating as possible, because then there is no one she can trust but herself, and Pádraic will be left with a choice: either he accepts the Voice's offer and is assimilated into the Collective, or he is destroyed by the sun. And because he'd care for his answers more than anything, of course he'd never say no. They are both pushed to the brink of ultimate betrayal - one being Dominated, the other being Staked - and it gives them every reason to hate one another and to leave them with nothing and no one ever again.

Except it doesn't work out that way. Kali acknowledges that the fault isn't their's, that they've both been used and manipulated and made desperate. And Pádraic isn't the slightest bit angry with her; he's terrified, but even so he wants to reassure her that he understands, he wants to comfort her, to let her know that he doesn't blame her. And ultimately, his refusal is based on what Kali says - that he's trapped in this endless cycle of empty promises that lead to more promises but never an answer - and he decides that he just wants some damned peace.

So the Voice is angry with regards to Kali because Pádraic chose to care about her and valued what she said.

The second is that the Voice intended for Pádraic's betrayal to wound Kali so deeply that she would never trust another person, which would then leave her vulnerable to manipulation through the vial, while also leaving Pádraic with a choice: ask the question and be assimilated into the Collective, or refuse and be destroyed by the sun.

Except Kali is Kali, and despite how hurt she is, and how shaken her trust in her own judgement is, she decides to be unpredictable once more and goes to Mato for help. She decides to trust her judgement of his character - that he is a good person, and that he will go to any lengths to save Pádraic, even if it means risking the sun - and he proves her right. And Pádraic's choice of 'assimilate or die' is altered, and that makes the Voice angry because that's not how Kali was supposed to respond. She wasn't supposed to extend her trust once more, and Pádraic was either going to play his role or be destroyed. Instead he gets to be free and he chooses to pursue Kali, which then jeopardises whatever manipulations are planned for her.

So yeah: Pádraic wasn't supposed to care about Kali as deeply as he did in the end, and Kali wasn't supposed to trust anyone ever again, yet she did. And now Caine is stomping his feet because what do you mean you can forgive someone who's wronged you so terribly? What do you mean that love and care can transcend betrayal, and that forgiveness can be given so freely?

On Why We Keep Doing This

… what brought you to this game or WoD in general? What are reasons that you keep playing VTM, despite its flaws?

It would be trite to say it was always going to happen, but - it sort of was. I was mainlining Fighting Fantasy books as a little 'un, I was a goth teen and a theatre kid - the confluence of influences was always there. Some lads at my secondary school played Werewolf at lunchtimes, one of them branched out into running some weird Kevin Smith fanfic game using Vampire's mechanics, and while that was terrible and ran for one session I had the Revised core book by then and thought I could do better. Also, this was a game that girls wanted to play. Girls who wore corsets. That was important too.

I think I keep playing because of the flaws. Media that's actually good, solid, nothing in particular to complain about, doesn't inspire me. Flawed gems make me want to turn them over and examine them and figure out how they work, how I'd do things differently and (in an ideal world, by my own standards, with the resources I now have at my disposal) better. Also, the girls are still here. We're all aged-out goths with bad knees, but by god, we can still pretend to be vampires together.

… how do you "reconcile" with the 90s core of VTM, and the general themes of the gothic punk from that era, which is by and large no longer part of the modern zeitgeist?

There are a few answers to that.

The 1990s are just another historical setting, and I've always liked historical Vampire. Cut my teeth on Victorian Age, my most successful and long running games are mainly Dark Ages. The 1990s are a bit like now, but people still smoke and use phone boxes and have to look things up in books most of the time. It's the world I grew up in, and sometimes I miss it.

Also, I don't think millenarianism is quite played out yet. History isn't a straight line, it's a series of expanding cycles, more things happening in them but patterns tending to repeat themselves. Before the dust was settled on Tremere's corpse, @stained-glass-sphinx was running a VtM game with the pretext of "Gehenna's been and gone, not with a bang but with a whimper, the elders have vanished, what do you of the double-figure generations do now?" Doesn't that sound familiar?

Also also, what is a vampire if not a creature stuck in time? I've had it brought home to me with the experience of playing Santino, who's badass in a very specifically mid-1990s sense and cringe as fuck to anyone born this century. Trying to make him work on this platform showed me how quickly being an anachronism can set in.

… what do you think about the attempt to, for a lack of a better term, "modernize" VTM with it's 5th edition? Did it fail, succeed, or do a bit of both?

Pretty good. Revised still does some things better in how it teaches you to play and outlines the sects, but I reach back and check in and draw forward what I need and that's enough.

Mechanically, I'm very happy with V5: Hunger dice, Bane Severity, Discipline restructuring, Predator and Coterie Types, that's all good stuff. It feels like every player at my table is playing the same game now. Doing vampirism, i.e. eating blood while all your friends are dead, is an unskippable core loop of play. Characters are built together as part of coteries and they have a reason to be colleagues, if not friends. Clan curses are codified around a scaling system that ensures they're all relevant. Disciplines (mostly) work the same way and the unique powers are singular flourishes without padding.

It's not perfect. It's very obvious that four different development styles are at work, the game as a whole is not very clear about what a chronicle looks like, and the new core political conflict doesn't function because the Anarchs are a pitiful pastiche of a sect written by people who wouldn't know a successful revolution if it bit their throat out and spat down the hole. Some of the rules are overcooked - I'm looking at Domain Merits with their pretentious names and abstract applications, and the middle bits of Blood Potency like Rouse rerolls and bonus Discipline dice that just disappear because breaking a number down into five numbers and a statement ain't elegant.

It's been getting consistently better, though. Renegade's rules aren't perfect but at least they're focused and directed at actually playing a game. The Second Inquisition and the Sabbat give you antagonists with actual teeth. I'm liking the new trend of supplements that change up the game's genre rather than bloat it with "lore": Blood Sigils, Gehenna War and Blood Stained Love are all optional but transformative and I really appreciate them existing. I think V5's had its growing pains, but has finally figured itself out and is going to endure.

At the time I was, maybe, not as sure as my friend that it was funny. I felt like I should laugh -- of course she was being ridiculous, and getting really upset over the shit library patrons say is even more ridiculous. Nevertheless, I was upset.

Later, I learned a few key things about her, which vindicated my hurt feelings:

a few minutes later, she opened an interaction with a Black coworker by saying the N word with a hard r;

after being kicked out for this, she stood outside the library shaking with rage, muttering to herself about how we were all going to Hell.

Even now, over a year later, this is simultaneously one of the worst Jewhat interactions, and also the hardest to take seriously. Do the utterances of crazy homeschool moms really tell us anything about antisemitism? Or just that this lady was crazy? Is this really a story about antisemitism, or about the antiblackness just out of frame? Can you separate the two? (To this last question, me and Mr. Fanon alike say "no.")

But in any event, it's a bit hilarious that this lady believes we're going to hell for thinking slurs are bad and that there's no such thing as a "Christian Jew." She's doing a few washer cycles in Gehenna herself, to be sure.

Like pre embrace Mouse (Tobias Devorak) was the son of an alcoholic mechanic and his childhood was not great. It left him so well adjusted that he wound up as an angry highschool dropout who couldn't keep a job or apartment for more than a few months at a time.

his sire, Amelia, found him in a rare period where he was both employed and housed. And after he beat the crap out of her ghoul (for being and asshole and making him loose his temper) she decided she didn't want her pain in the ass ghoul and wanted to see what mouse was about.

So she killed her ghoul and framed mouse for his murder. She essentially hunted mouse into a corner and embraced him on a whim. She then proceeded to abandon him with nothing but a note giving him the name mouse, a warning to keep away from the sun, and her van.

He did not take to vampire life well, had an awful time adjusting to feeding specifically, and fell into an awful cycle of frenzying and running. And very quickly caught the eye of hunters where he found my trainwreck torrie who saved his ass and helped him adjust to kindred life.

and they had a whole adventure involving picking up another gangrel (hacker and eco terrorist Nixie Tube), a thin-blood malk (geography major and formor figurehead for a gehenna cult Thirteen), a Nosferatu (amnesiac Nere), and also blowing up a werewolf with a pipebomb.

He also got suckered into dating my torie (Solaire) and also joining her band and the Toronto anarchs.

ELLUM AVATAR

The strongest superboss in my game Chronicles Meteorfall. The only enemy to be at Lv9999, HE is an extremely strong foe, almost impossible to defeat. He begins every battle using the unbelievably powerful almighty art "God's Wrath" which does 1.3 MILLION damage at base. Thankfully it can be reduced using the endgame seraph charm and high enough RES, but without heavy preparation God's Wrath will guarantee a full party wipe before the fight can actually begin.

ELLUM AVATAR has a staggering 4 press turns, but rarely makes use of all of them. In turn 1, which he always goes first in due to always having advantage, ELLUM AVATAR will only use God's Wrath followed by waiting for his other 3 actions. On Turn 2 ELLUM AVATAR will use an incredibly powerful fire art, "Flames of Gehenna", before waiting for another 3 actions. Every turn after that ELLUM AVATAR will replace one of HIS wait actions with another incredibly powerful art of the fire, water, thunder, or force elements. These attacks hit 9 times and deal absurd damage, a damage tier even higher than insane. (moderate<major<massive<severe<unreal<colossal<insane<absurd)

After ELLUM AVATAR goes through adding each of these elemental attacks he will then proceed to use God's Wrath TWICE before repeating the cycle, each time the cycle repeats using God's Wrath an additional time until he no longer waits when using God's Wrath, eventually using God's Wrath FOUR TIMES IN A ROW. Here is ELLUM AVATAR's attack pattern laid out for easy viewing.

Turn 2: Fires of Gehenna, Wait, Wait, Wait

Turn 3: Fires of Gehenna, Elder Dias, Wait, Wait

As you can see here, you REALLY want to kill ELLUM AVATAR before he gets to even turn 6 and starts spamming God's Wrath multiple times per turn. But how can you possibly do that when his HP is 7.3 MILLION max? Not only that, but ELLUM AVATAR nulls EVERY element sans almighty, celestial, and the special elements (love, greed, hunger, etc) ELLUM AVATAR also counters any use of Kaiser Dragon or Obliterate with Armageddon, instantly ending the fight. And finally, most deadly of all, if all your party members fall, ELLUM AVATAR will use his strongest attack: CURSE OF EXTINCTION. What does this attack do? Well, IT DESTROYS THE UNIVERSE, DELETING YOUR SAVE FILE PERMANENTLY! So this fight has a massive risk element to it as well, since if you can't close the game fast enough when you lose, say goodbye to your save data!

The only feasable way to beat ELLUM AVATAR is first overlevel to Lv999 and then grind stat boosters to get enough RES to heavily resist all of ELLUM AVATAR's attacks (around 4500 RES, the max amount of RES that actually does something, reducing damage by a wopping 90%), enough STR or MAG to deal the maximum amount of damage consistently (max STR/MAG is 99,999), and enough HP to survive a single God's Wrath. (more than 130,000 HP) Once the battle starts stack as many press turn additions and damage multipliers as possible. And finally after you survive the opening God's Wrath, use the enemy art Smash Break to make ELLUM AVATAR weak to smash AND SPAM THE HECK OUT OF MULTI-HIT!

A nearly useless move early-game that only deals 2 hits of highly lackluster smash damage (only 40% of a regular hit), every 20 levels Multi-Hit gains one additional hit. On a regular game that isn't too big as even at the regular max level of Lv99 multi-hit would only hit 6 times. However, if you raise the level cap to Lv999, Multi-Hit hits 56 TIMES for a character at the true max of Lv999! Absolutely absurd! ELLUM AVATAR has 44,444 DEF so you will only be hitting for 10% damage, but that matters little when you're dealing 99,999 damage a hit 54 times per action. With this strategy the seemingly impossible ELLUM AVATAR can be defeated in only a single turn!

There might be other strategies, but I haven't figured any of them out yet. Please experiment once my game finally releases and find the strategy that works for you!

Heya! These are a good set of questions. I think I might just answer them for fun, I hope lots of other people do too! Sorry if my writing style seems a little tired, it's currently 2AM and I need to go to bed lol. OC: Gina Gehenna Gina's a self-conscious shut-in who lives alone in a mostly-empty apartment.
