"(Bloomberg) -- The Corporation for Public Broadcasting said that it will begin to wind down operations after President Donald Trump signed a package of spending cuts that ended its federal funding….the majority of staff positions will end with the close of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, 2025. "Last month, Congress clawed back $535 million in already approved annual spending on CPB though 2027. The cuts were part of a $9 billion package of so-called rescissions inspired by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency." Gregory Korte

Trump and Republicans are attacking public broadcasting, claiming it's "wasteful" and promotes an "agenda." But spending on public broadcasting is just 0.01% of the federal budget — and for years the funding had bipartisan support. This is part of Trump's bigger war on an educated public. As corporate media bows to Trump, public broadcasting has never been more important to our democracy. Public radio stations reach 98% of Americans. If they close, millions lose access to critical news. Trump is trying to control not just what we do, but what we know. Be warned. [Cartoon by @adamzyglis]

Now that USAID is gone, people are dying who otherwise would not have. This is a simple fact. How many? Who knows. One epidemiologist says that 300,000 people have already died because USAID cut off services. And maybe that’s right. But maybe the number is only—can you believe we would say “only”?—100,000 or 50,000. Fifty-thousand, by the way, is the total enrollment at the University of Nebraska. So in one of our optimistic scenarios, Farritor only helped kill the entire population of his alma mater. Other researchers have tried to get their arms around how many people will die in the coming years because USAID is gone, but this is an exercise in futility, too. Maybe the number is 14 million, as the Lancet suggests. But even if that figure is wildly off the mark and only—that word again—a million people die needlessly, what does it even mean to say such a thing? Please remember that when Farritor was confronted with a gentle criticism of his actions, he responded with a meme about a crying baby. So what are we supposed to do with a man like Luke Farritor?

Btw, privatization is stealing from *you.* You are the public in "publicly owned." Oligarchs are coming in to take the things we all share ownership of as Americans, like Medicare, Social Security, National Parks, PBS and scrapping them for parts they find profitable.

The right is planning to rob us and quite literally want us to thank them for the privilege by calling it "government efficiency."
