Roddacember Day 1: Favourite Character

I don't post about Deltora Quest enough, but something you need to know from the outset is that the first DQ book I read was Isle of Illusion because Vision Australia's library was like that. I got all the rest more or less in order (Shadowgate and Dread Mountain were out of sequence but hey, can't win 'em all), but this is important for what I'm about to say.

Because Jasmine in Isle of Illusion was keeping a secret from Lief, thinking he had been hiding her sister from her, and also demonstrated her absolute coolness in this book in several ways that made me instantly fall in love:

Had animal companions she could talk to, which I loved.

Proceeded to escape from the mud grubs offscreen thanks to animal companions and then bust Lief out immediately despite above beliefs about his lying to her.

Made it clear during her interactions with Penn and the Piper that she did not give a shit about stupid bullshit rules or others' expectations of her.

Fuckin swinging on a rope to get to the dome and the others joining her, because I do not like heights but I can acknowledge she was fuckin badass for doing that without fear and I didn't know anything about her that wasn't mentioned in this book.

Proceeded to destroy Auris's entire life by vocally shattering his illusions, figurative and literal.

In short, I was in love by the time I was halfway through the book.

And then I started reading the rest of the series and found I was right to do so.

Jasmine is impulsive, has a very short temper, can and often does break unwritten social rules, struggles with reading and can't swim. Jasmine is also whipcrack smart, observant, can talk to animals and trees, takes literally nobody's shit even if they're scary, is breathtakingly selfless, and as Glock said with his last breath, has the heart of a fuckin Jalis.

Jasmine is amazing and I love her, even when she gets herself or friends into trouble, and Lief made the absolute right choice, and that romance does not feel forced at all, because when a girl saves your life twice in the span of a day, when you've only just met, and then continues to save your fucken life over and over in the course of the next three years, what are you gonna do, not propose as soon as she'll let you?

Also that proposal, AKA "When the time comes, I will follow Adin's example and marry for love. If the woman I love will have me, of course," and her response, as lovely and forthright as Jasmine always is: "She probably will, when the time comes."

I love her.

Also she slayed in that outfit Steven gave her in Maze of the Beast and I love that for her as well. :D

Hello everyone Ricky Goldman here.

Its Futureshock: Turn It Up live at Stockport Masonic Guildhall in Stockport. I got myself a beer. 1st match is Ethan Kelly vs Scott Oberman. Scott in control to begin,Slamming and chopping Ethan trying to put him away early but Ethan came back into it and turned it to his advantage. Ethan pulled out some good and impressive moves,coming close to a win but Scott got angry and back into it again he got because Ethan just couldn't do it even after hitting a Claymore to no avail. Scott beat down Ethan forcing a DQ. Scott asked Ethan to join him and that he did.

Next up is Lizzy Evo and HCC vs Lana Austin and Harley Hudson. HCC starts the action but Harley and Lana soon take over,they just won't let in Lizzy but HCC continues to fight. HCC finally managed to tag in Lizzy who went right to the top rope hitting a drop kick to no avail. Harley back in it for a short little time but HCC breaks up the count. A spear to Lana from Lizzy sends her out the ring,Lizzy and Harley go at it as Lizzy scores the pinfall on Harley giving her and HCC the win.

Onto the next Joe Blazr vs DDL for the futureshock title. Joe is the former Big Guns Joe,hes now got a comedy gimmick. Joe came very close multiple times to ending the 701 day title reign of Damon Leigh. Good match here from both men,Joe continued to stay in it despite the onslaught from the champion. Damon just couldn't put Joe away no matter what he did,even hitting a piledriver which Joe kicked out of. The champion hooks on a sleeper hold but How fought out and with the crowd behind him pulled out some very impressive moves. What a match this was that definitely went the distance. A bump from the ref,Damon cracked Joe over the head with the title but this didn't do anything because Joe kicked out and the match continued. DDL hits his finisher but Joe kicks out which totally surprised not only the champion but the crowd to. Joe continues to fight and battle,he actually goes on to end the 701 day streak and become champion.

Another match is Oscar Byron and Steven Cross vs Dynamite Lee Dawson and Senner. Lee in control of Steven until Oscar tags in,the crowd is certainly hot now. Steven back in and it looked like he was going to walk out but he got in the ring before the 10 count and was right on Lee. Senner tagged in for a tiny amount of time as Oscar is in and then Steven. Steven throws Senner out the ring and dispatches him as Oscar clotheslines Lee for the dub. After the match Senner slapped Lee so Lee said he would defend his title against him later on.

Whee, let’s all spill opinions! I have many here now that I’ve finished the series.

The Stevens kids had it rough, really. Their mom and dad were astronauts. They lost a friend at a young age. Gordo and Tracy got divorced and had individual problems AND died at the same time. The kids’ surrogate family, the Baldwins, were hardly the picture of stability either. All this before Danny even got out of college.

Jimmy, I think, dealt badly with the fallout and stumbled into a crowd that preyed on his vulnerability. If at least one of his parents had been around, he probably would have been OK.

Danny though. Strap in because I HAVE OPINIONS.

Danny was trouble from the getgo. Losing his parents definitely didn’t help matters but he was getting into trouble long before that AND we later find out he was setting Shane up to take the fall. So like. Danny has some sociopathic leanings and was gonna have problems no matter what.

More opinions.

Danny never should have been allowed to fly. Mental health problems are a one-way DQ on a flight medical. That’s why Dani broke her arm in S2, so the NASA flight surgeon wouldn’t yank Gordo’s status. Danny has been in AA and has a history of conduct problems. This alone would have bounced him from Annapolis, Stevens name or not. This guy is a walking conduct unbecoming an officer charge. And that’s just the stuff his superiors would know about.

Danny should have been grounded before he could even think about being a pilot never mind an astronaut. Yes, Ed was too lenient, but it shouldn’t have even been Ed’s decision. The flight surgeon’s job is to keep people like Danny from endangering themselves and others.

However, this is a drama, and dramatic license is a thing. I do think the show may have taken this a bit too far though.

As you said @castalyne, all the characters on For All Mankind mess up and have to face the music for their decisions. I’m curious how this will look with Danny and Jimmy next season.

Lauren Cuthbertson- a quintessential Aurora, her dancing is so classy and refined, perfectly Royal.

Francesca Hayward - CATS Love her the most in Ashton's work, Rhapsody is a fan favorite for a reason.

Fumi Kaneko- had a killer year of debuts last season that all received rave reviews. It's honestly a toss-up between her Juliet and her Swan Lake for me.

Sarah Lamb- quite honestly anything where she's dancing with a healthy Steven McRae, Manon and Rubies are particularly epic with her

Mayara Magri- her Black Swan is just so good. The attitude, the precision of her bourees, the lights out fouettes, the 'I know I'm good' energy is transfixing, the prince would be insane not to fall for her.

Laura Morera- Saw her dance Natalia Petrovna, touching and heartbreaking complete

Anna Rose O’Sullivan - Juliet, easy peasy. Doesn't even have to try to act, it's like she breathes that role.

Yasmine Naghdi- I just like watching her smile and enjoy being stage? So nothing too sad or dramatic, it's basic but just let me watch her dance Nutcrakcer pdd in peace.

Akane Takada-a shame she's been battling so many injuries, those videos of her in A Midsummer Night's Dream remain a highlight. Unfortunately, I've never seen her live.

and saving the two hardest for last...

Natalia Osipova- it feels wrong to put anything but Kitri here, that 2011 broadcast with her and Vasiliev, before they left BT, is unparalleled. But also her Giselle with Acosta when she first came to ROH, legendary/

Marianela Nunez- the entire classical repertoire, I honestly can't pick. I'll watch her do tendus at the barre for 3 hours. Every role I see her dance blows me away, how could I ever pick one. The TOP 3 could easily be SL, DQ, and SB but that feels too narrow because she just has too many wonderful roles. I refuse to answer this question, you've stumped me.

Hello! First of all, happy new year, I hope you had a lovely start; and also thanks for the ask :D Let's see...

Lauren Cuthbertson: hands down Juliet; but another role where I really, really like her is The Young Girl in The Two Pigeons.

Francesca Hayward: she's my favorite Juliet, probably of all time, and she always seems to excel in anything Ashton. I've also heard amazing things about her Manon for years, but unfortunately, I've never had the privilege of seeing it.

Fumi Kaneko: from what I've seen in person when she was in Bologna, both her Odette/Odile were nothing short of superb. 

Sarah Lamb: Manon by a long shot. I'd definitely call it her signature role. She's also generally amazing in anything Macmillan.

Mayara Magri: hard for me to say because there isn't much footage of her in principal roles, out there. There are some clips of her Odile (old and very recent) but I just don't feel her interpretation. The roles I've liked her in the most so far are Mercedes in DQ and the Rose Fairy in Nutcracker.

Yasmine Naghdi: I think Sugar Plum Fairy and the Concerto Adagio.

Marianela Nuñez: she absolutely owns most roles, it's ridiculous, honestly. But the ones she's the absolute best in for me are Odette/Odile, Aurora and Kitri. 

Natalia Osipova: I'd say Swanilda (ironic, because she said she hates this role), and Kitri. 

Anna Rose O’Sullivan: she's honestly a great Juliet. The role comes so naturally to her, and I'm kind of obsessed with her acting in it.

Akane Takada: definitely Odette/Odile and Titania in The Dream.

Matthew Ball: Romeo, Romeo, Romeo...did I mention Romeo? He's also an extremely believable, solid, absolutely hate-inspiring Albrecht. Special mention to Apollo and the little I saw from him as Rudolph. Also...his Tybalt!!!

William Bracewell: another great Romeo. And I was very impressed with his Hamlet as well.

Alexander Campbell: I think he makes a wonderful Basilio.

Reece Clarke: whatever

Cesar Corrales: the latin lover he plays every time he's on stage, as every possible character, I guess? 

Ryoichi Hirano: I absolutely love his Leonte.

Steven McRae: definitely Rudolph and Oberon. 

Vadim Muntagirov: best Siegfried and De Grieux out there, for me 

Marcelino Sambé: I really love both his Romeo and his Mercutio.

Anyway continuing my deranged anti-DQ anime rant. I hate how much they dumbed down the violence and like. No I'm not saying they should have animated full-blown gore in a kid's show I'm not That insane. But there Are In Fact ways to censor violence without stripping back how dire the stakes are. Like. You don't have to cut away entirely when you can just frame it differently. Or like just have a character not bleed but still have that cartoon red line on them. Or something. Even just like. Having the characters react with more than a slight wince and an anime oof when they get hit. The tone gets sand-blasted when the stakes are lowered so much. Like kids aren't stupid they can tell the difference between a pokemon battle and someone actually getting hurt. You weren't supposed to think the fights were fun or cool you were supposed to be horrified by the monsters. IT'S AN ACTION/HORROR NOT AN ACTION/COMEDY. And I know a lot of the horror of the books comes from the unbridled imagination of a child or whatever BUT. There is literally official art of a lot of the monsters and they are NOT digimon-looking creatures. They're grotesque. The series was challenging and uncomfortable and freaky. And that was a good thing. That's WHY most people liked it. It was like violent goosebumps for people who were too young to read lotr. If that makes any sense.

And also another thing, the books I think are aimed at like 5th-8th graders whereas the show seems to be aimed at like 2nd graders which is so perplexing. Like yeah don't kill characters in a show for kids that young but also why would you make a baby show based on a series where people get melted alive by acid? Why bother? Cause without the immaculate atmosphere the story itself just becomes a macguffin fetch quest. You can just make your own macguffin fetch quest. AUGH. *Clenches my fists so hard my palms bleed* Also whoever designed Steven and Jasmine should go to jail forever!!! DIE!!!

Star Trek Prodigy: First Con-tact (1x07)

Summary: The crew messes up first contact; there’s a Ferengi lady.

Comments: The more AQ aliens that appear, the more I’m inclined to just ignore any mystery they may be generating. I’m worried it’s never going to be explained. Here, the crew meets Nandi, a Ferengi woman who was Dal’s foster mom (or something) before she sold him to The Diviner. 

Skipping over why there’s a Ferengi woman over here in the DQ, this is the first Ferengi character we’ve gotten in Prodigy (not that we needed one) and so I want to talk about that since the Ferengi are one of the more interesting alien species of the Star Trek franchise for me. They were introduced as fresh adversaries for the TNG crew in The Last Outpost, but were a resounding flop and only appeared sporadically throughout the early seasons as weak antagonists. By later seasons of TNG, they essentially only served the role of gag villains (e.g., The Price and Ménage à Troi). 

So their rebirth over the course of DS9 through the hard work of Ira Steven Behr (from The Nagus all the way to The Magnificent Ferengi) was simply fascinating to watch, a solid study of how to develop characters beyond stock status. Of course, as Star Trek Vanilla Lite, Voyager regressed to their earlier portrayal in episodes like False Profits (a pair of Ferengi pretend to be gods to swindle people) and Inside Man (a pair of Ferengi hijack a hologram to swindle people), and that’s the flavor of Ferengi we get here: a Ferengi woman lies and pulls on heart strings to swindle people. 

I didn’t take any notes on this episode, and I watched it over a week ago now, but Nandi explains she needs Dal’s help because “a Federation ship can open doors” (or something). This, from what I remember, never actually comes up: the planet they land on has had no prior contact with other species (it’s a first contact mission), so the fact that the Protostar is—at least in appearance—a Federation vessel has no relevance. Besides, there’s no “door” that needs to be opened: they land the ship on the planet and then walk around (after Gwyn saves them). It’s also a strange thing to say in the DQ since (1) the expectation is that no one would know what the Federation even is and (2) if they did, their experience would likely have been negative (based on the events of Voyager). Also, if this is a first-contact planet, and the McGuffin crystals are deep inside the inhabitant’s sanctuary place, how would Nandi have known those crystals even existed, much less where to find them? These are just details...

Anyways, breaking the Prime Directive should really result in stricter consequences beyond “Holo!Janeway is upset with you,” which itself doesn’t have any much bite since Janeway herself has broken it on at least a couple occasions (arguably).

Oh, we learn that the Protostar was boarded by the scary robot guy that works for The Diviner. So... that central mystery plot is really driving this show for me still. If The Diviner already had the ship, how did he lose it? And what did they do with Chakotay (not that I care)? Is he back on the asteroid breaking apart rocks? Wait, now that they know the Protostar isn’t in the mines, are the slaves still back there breaking apart rocks?

My enjoyment: 2/5
