Ravi looked over the rest of them.

Chim focused on his phone, no doubt looking at old pictures again. Ones where their family was still whole.

Eddie was talking quietly with Hen, something about trying to get a playdate together before he and Chris headed to El Paso.

They were just waiting on Buck.

Buck, who had texted them in a since-silent group chat, asking them all to meet on their off day.

No one had responded beyond liking the message, but they all were here. All except Buck.

It wasn't like him to be late, but under the circumstances, no one was complaining. Or, at least, Ravi wasn't complaining. Eddie had pulled out his phone, and Ravi caught the tail end of a snide remark about having limited time back in LA. Hen made a face, but didn't argue.

Ravi wished he had heard more, so he knew better what to say in response. Maybe something like, Where else do you want to be? Are we not enough for you?

He looked up at the sound of intentional scuffing, someone making sure their footsteps were heard.

That also wasn't like Buck. He'd call out a greeting, or run up before they could notice and drape himself over whoever was closest. Or, at least, he used to. Ravi didn't know what this subdued version of Buck would do. Scuff his feet, apparently.

Except it wasn't Buck. It was Tommy.

Ravi could tell he wasn't the only one surprised.

Tommy hadn't been on the group chat.

Chimney set his phone down as Tommy sat. "Is Buck parking or something?"

Tommy shook his head. "Evan's not coming."

Eddie rolled his eyes and leaned forward, almost as if he was trying to make himself bigger.. "Oh, so, he texts us that it's so important we show up, but he can't even bother?"

Tommy stared him down until Eddie sat back.

"No. I texted you. I used his phone because otherwise, I didn't think you would come."

Ravi couldn't argue that.

"And I needed you here, because this all?" He gestured to all of them. "This has to stop."

I do really like the way the new chapter kind of showcases that Loid is really starting to settle into this whole parenting gig.

Like first 20 chapters Loid would have immediately gone into an anxiety induced fit about being a horrible fake father and how he's failing the mission and Anya, if Anya pulled the same crying fit trick on him (like she's done with success before) or he'd at least start to doubt his choices a little. But he just acts like a regular dad does and tells her to shut up, he doesn't give a fuck and she's staying her ass at home. And she would have too if Yor didn't convince him and if that isn't the most family shit ever I don't know what is

That's the growth we needed. Nature is healing.

Also he would have never out loud called her a brat before especially where Yor or someone else could hear and doubt their "father daughterly ness" but now he's yelling at her like a true father. Because yeah she really don't be listening but we love her for it.

I don't know I've always just felt like he's his truest self when it's just him and Anya. mostly because when he's not hyper focused on appearing like the greatest dad, Anya is just so ridiculous and left field that its hard to have anything less than a genuine reaction to her and the things she says. Also in regards to this operation stryx, she's the person he has the least to hide from, they both know he's not her dad and she's not his kid and that his marriage to Yor is fake. There's nobody to play pretend for, and that allows him to be just a little more real in their interactions because she's real with him.

Like I know he's a spy so we never really know his truest personality cause he's always putting on a mask, even with bond he puts on the mask of trainer no matter how badly he's not deceiving anyone, but honestly it doesn't feel like there's a mask with her. He's not Loid or Twilight with her but some secret third thing. Just a man with no real name but who is no less real and the strange kid he's trying to do right by no matter how many stress lines she cause him

Tommy watches as they all fracture apart, each putting on a brave face mirroring his own.

He watches as they move around Evan. They don't bring him in, carry him with.

Ravi lasts longest, but even he returns to his parents.

But no one stays with Evan.

Maddie is comforting Howie, who is doing his best to avoid Athena and the kids.

Hen and Karen hold each other close, look after their kids, and for some reason Eddie hangs on to them.

Not to Buck, who's drowning in cool water. Who's there for all of them without even realizing. Handing Maddie a pack of tissues as Howie breaks down. Cleaning up the spill Mara made when a stranger startled her next to the drink table. Refilling the serving dishes so Athena doesn't have to bother, though in name she's hosting.

Tommy wants to help, but knows he wouldn't be welcome. Evan had made it clear he doesn't have feelings for Tommy, doesn't want or need him around.

He had offered regardless, tried to help as he watched Evan juggle his self-made responsibilities with his carefully hidden grief, but had been pushed away. Had been told Bobby wanted Evan to take care of the rest of them. Hadn't been able to ask who would take care of Evan.

Evan, who had been sent away, unable to help, from the man he loved as a father.

Evan, who had fallen, sobbing, while Tommy watched.

Tommy doesn't wish any more grief on a single one of them.

But still.

He wonders if it would be different if they had seen.
