How I learned to read in my target languages (Part 2)

I will mention multiple others sources I used to improve my reading. Basically I would read for as long as I need to get 15 or 20 words daily.

I can't recommend WordSwing as much as I recommend DuChinese, but it's still worth using if you want to read more.

I don't remember using DuHanZi, but apparently I finished all free stories on it, there probably weren't a lot of them.

Once I had enough vocab and I was bored of DuChinese, I used a website, that I found on Reddit — www.mylingua.world.

It forms your recommendations on what news you can understand, based on your vocab knowledge. Once you see a word you've learned, you just mark it as learned. Gradually after marking more and more words, you see how much progress you've made and it's really motivating.

Would I recommend reading news to improve your vocab? Unless it's an article on your interests, I would say no. There's no need to force yourself to consume what you're not interested in to improve your language skills.

Another useful feature from this website is being able to add your own texts in chinese. Which significantly improved my reading skills in just a few months of reading fanfiction.

The main con of this resource is inaccuracy. While in most cases you won't notice it, some words on there have innaccurate translation. But don't worry, just use Pleco or an online dicitionary.

I have a dictionary I want to recommend to those of you who know Russian, it's name is PocketChinese. The app may be a bit laggy, but in a lot of cases where Pleco failed to explain a word or a phrase to me, PocketChinese succeeded. So as long as you switch between these two and mylingua.world, you'll probably be fine.

A few months ago they've set a limit on how many articles you can fully read weekly and on how many you can upload. But i assure you that even with the limit you still have a lot of possibilities to learn.

Just remember to bookmark articles you've found interesting, since finding them later is hard.

When I played games in chinese and had difficulties with writing down words to search for them I would use Deepl. It has a scan feature that allowes you to make photos of chinese texts. It automatically translates that, but you can also copy it and work with it.

My top resource is mylingua.world. Genuinely simplifies my life so much when I want to figure out new vocab in a new text.

Kinda fucked up that the best input method I can find for drawing Japanese characters is to open Google Translate in a web browser and then copy the characters from there into a text editor.

Translating lines from Japanese to English is entertaining — FF8-style

So, in the last seven years, the original Japanese script of quite a few Japanese RPGs, including Final Fantasy VIII (well, most of it, not all of it), has been made available. Using Google Translate to translate the site from Japanese -> English (since, being American born and raised, the English version of any JRPG is the only version I've ever played) helps you figure out which event in the storyline you may want to look into.

Once you know which line(s) you're looking for via Google Translate, you can take the original Japanese line(s) from the original site and insert the text into a free online translation site.

The translation sites I've been using are Deepl and RomajiDesu. The translations across both sites will not always match up.

I translated a line delivered by Squall from the Sorceress Memorial in Disc 3, when the party saves Rinoa from being sealed up and cryogenically frozen forever a la Adel.

Kanji:

Romaji:

Admittedly, between the two, the RomajiDesu translation is probably more accurate than the Deepl one — if Squall had said that, then the line would've been something like "俺 の リノア を 返してもらう。" / "Ore no Rinoa o kaeshitemorau."

But, come on, the Deepl translation of the line as originally written is just too good to not point out! "My Rinoa."

Es ist Zeit für ein Update der Serie zur automatischen Übersetzung des schäumenden Fuchses. Was bisher geschah: "Der Fuchs schäumt seinen Geruch in die kalte Unweltlichkeit des Wassers" (2017) und "Fortschritte beim Waschen des Fuchses" (2023).

Die Originalstelle aus J. A. Bakers "The Peregrine":

“I have always longed to be a part of the outward life, to be out there at the edge of things, to let the human taint wash away in emptiness and silence as the fox sloughs his smell into the cold unworldliness of water; to return to the town as a stranger. Wandering flushes a glory that fades with arrival.”

Die offizielle Übersetzung von Andreas Jandl und Frank Sievers:

“Ich habe mich immer danach gesehnt, Teil dieses Lebens, dieses Außen zu sein, dort draußen am Rande der Dinge zu stehen, den menschlichen Firnis mit Leere und Stille von mir abzuspülen, so wie der Fuchs sich in der kalten Weltlosigkeit des Wassers seines Geruchs entledigt, um als Unbekannter in die Stadt zurückzukehren. Das Wandern hat einen Glanz, der mit der Ankunft verblasst.”

Ich zitiere der Einfachkeit halber meinen Kommentar von 2023: "Schön, aber nicht perfekt: Ein taint ist ein Makel, also eher das Gegenteil von einem Firnis, es ist unklar, ob der in die Stadt zurückkehrende Unbekannte der Fuchs ist oder der Erzähler, es geht auch gar nicht um Unbekanntheit (also die Perspektive der anderen Menschen, die einen nicht erkennen), sondern um Fremdheit (also die eigene Perspektive: Der Erzähler fühlt sich fremd). Das flushes im letzten Satz bleibt unübersetzt." Das soll nicht heißen, dass die Jandl-Sievers-Übersetzung etwa nicht gut wäre (sie ist gut) und auch nicht, dass ich es besser gekonnt hätte (hätte ich nicht). Aber irgendwas ist halt immer.

Jetzt zu den neuen automatischen Übersetzungen:

Kagi Translate (kostenpflichtig) Juni 2025:

"Ich habe mich immer danach gesehnt, Teil des äußeren Lebens zu sein, draußen am Rand der Dinge, um den menschlichen Makel in Leere und Stille wegwaschen zu lassen, wie der Fuchs seinen Geruch ins kalte, unwirkliche Wasser abstreift; um als Fremder in die Stadt zurückzukehren. Das Umherwandern entfacht eine Herrlichkeit, die mit der Ankunft verblasst."

Das ist das Ergebnis der "Standard"-Übersetzung von Kagi Translate. Es gibt auch noch "Best", das hat in meinem Experiment allerdings gar kein Ergebnis geliefert. Das "Entfachen" ist neu, ich finde es aber keinen Fortschritt gegenüber "aufleuchten lassen". "Umherwandern" ist eine gute Alternative zum von fast allen verwendeten "Wandern"; auf die Idee ist aber ChatGPT vor zwei Jahren auch schon gekommen.

DeepL Juni 2025:

"Ich habe mich immer danach gesehnt, ein Teil des äußeren Lebens zu sein, draußen am Rande der Dinge zu sein, den menschlichen Makel in der Leere und Stille verschwinden zu lassen, so wie der Fuchs seinen Geruch in die kalte Unweltlichkeit des Wassers abgibt; als Fremder in die Stadt zurückzukehren. Besser als mein letztes DeepL-Ergebnis aus dem Februar 2020, aber nichts, was nicht schon dagewesen wäre.

Google Translate Juni 2025:

Leider habe ich es vor zwei Jahren auch bei Google Translate versäumt, einen Zwischenstand zu dokumentieren. Deshalb kann ich hier zum Vergleich nur die Google-Version aus dem Juni 2019 zeigen:

Umherstreifen! Das ist neu und beschreibt viel besser, was der Autor im Buch macht, als das zielstrebige "Wandern". Leider passt es hier trotzdem nicht, weil im Satz davor schon "abstreift" vorkommt.

2025 macht keins der vier Tools noch Fehler wie "Das Wandern errötet einen Ruhm" (Korrektur: oder doch, Google Translate vertut sich mit dem "Schütten" des Geruchs). Es kann gut sein, dass die aktuellen Übersetzungswerkzeuge alle bereits an meinen Techniktagebuchbeiträgen trainiert worden sind und ihre Arbeit an diesem spezifischen Text dadurch leichter geworden ist. Die unbefriedigende Abspülsituation hat sich dank Kagi Translate und ChatGPT etwas verbessert. Mein aus allen Übersetzungen zusammengebauter Vorschlag wäre jetzt:

“Ich habe mich immer danach gesehnt, Teil dieses Lebens, dieses Außen zu sein, dort draußen am Rande der Dinge zu stehen, den menschlichen Makel in Leere und Stille von mir abwaschen zu lassen, so wie der Fuchs seinen Geruch im kalten, weltfernen Wasser abstreift; als Fremder in die Stadt zurückzukehren. Das Umherwandern lässt einen Glanz aufleuchten, der mit der Ankunft verblasst.”

Aber die meisten Entscheidungen sind jetzt nur noch Geschmackssache. Bis auf das "outward life", das ist weiterhin ein Problem und ich hoffe, dass in der nächsten oder übernächsten Runde doch noch eine richtig gute Lösung dabei ist.

Große Sprachmodelle helfen mir

Weil die GeoGuessr-Begeisterung von Wolfseule an diesem Abend im Juli auf mich übergesprungen ist, habe ich seitdem einige Zeit mit dem Spiel verbracht und auch die Worldcup-Qualifikationsspiele und den Worldcup selbst komplett im Livestream verfolgt. Irgendwann in dieser Zeit habe ich im Chat zum Spaß Zitate aus der "Schachnovelle" von Stefan Zweig fürs Thema GeoGuessr umgebaut, was nicht viel Arbeit war, weil es wirklich alles schon sehr genau passt. Daraus soll jetzt ein richtiges Buch werden, das Original hat nur 80 Seiten, es ist also auch weiterhin wenig Arbeit.

Weil uns beiden nicht sofort ein guter Spielername für eine der Figuren – im Original: der Schachweltmeister Mirko Czentovic – einfällt, lasse ich mir von ChatGPT Vorschläge machen.

Zuerst beschreibe ich, dass ich einen Namen für jemanden brauche, der Mirko Czentovic heißt und GeoGuessr spielt, aber sehr dumm ist.

ChatGPT macht 20 Vorschläge, die alle so ähnlich sind wie "GeoGoofster" "DirectionDilemma" und "CluelessCzar".

Schon ganz gut, sage ich ermutigend, versuch es noch mal, aber mit Namen, die nicht explizit sagen, dass er dumm ist. Er ist nur geschmacklos und eitel.

"FlashyTraveler", sagt ChatGPT, "GeoGlamour", "MapMogul" (und weitere 17 Namen).

Ich versuche es noch mal: "Bitte schlag Namen vor, die Teile des echten Namens Mirko Czentovic enthalten, aber auch Namen sind, die einem jungen und eitlen Menschen gefallen könnten."

ChatGPT: "MirkoGlamovic", "KoolCzent", "MCKingExplorer", "GeoGlamko".

Aus zwei von diesen Vorschlägen fertige ich den Namen "GeoGlamovic" an, mit dem auch Wolfseule zufrieden ist.

Den Rest des Buchs produzieren wir in Handarbeit, zuerst bei reedsy.com, wo man gemeinsam am Text arbeiten und ein schon fast brauchbares EPUB exportieren kann, und dann mache ich alleine weiter, das E-Book mit Calibre und das PDF/Papierbuch mit LaTeX. Ich lade die Ergebnisse als PDF und EPUB beim Internet Archive und als PDF zur Herstellung eines Papierbuchs bei lulu.com hoch*.

Weil es so einfach war, beschließen wir, auch noch eine englische Version zu machen. Anders als der deutsche Originaltext der Schachnovelle sind die beiden existierenden Übersetzungen ins Englische noch nicht gemeinfrei, deshalb können wir sie nicht dafür verwenden.

Ich kopiere den Anfang des Textes zu DeepL, und als das schon bald verlangt, dass ich mich anmelde, den Rest in 5000-Zeichen-Abschnitten zu Google Translate. Die so entstehende Übersetzung ins Englische lese ich auf den ersten Seiten sehr gründlich durch und mache hier und da etwas schöner. Aber bald lässt mein Tatendrang nach und ich sehe ein, dass die Übersetzung eigentlich gut genug ist. Als englischer Muttersprachlerin würde mir sicher mehr auffallen, aber da ich keine bin, kommt mir fast alles okay vor. Die gute Qualität der automatischen Übersetzung kann auch damit zu tun haben, dass die beiden menschlichen Übersetzungen in Schattenbibliotheken digital existieren und daher wahrscheinlich zum Trainingsmaterial von Google Translate gehört haben.
