what do you of people who think that pointing out how problematic claude and almyra are in the fodlan games is racist?
?
You mean people who think you are racist for noticing that Claude and Almyra in general were written with the worst orientalist clichés from the early 1810s?
As a rule of thumb, I don't believe you can determine if someone is racist or not based on their opinion of fictional characters -
That being said, there's a difference between saying "I think Devdan sucks" and whatever goes down in the chamber pot, using real world rhetoric about "invasive species" and whatnot to throw shade at fictional characters you don't like.
@gascon-en-exil made a Tellius video about Devdan's uh... well, Devdan in general in Tellius and the wtf that was Devdan in a game released in the 2000s, internationally released at that - and fwiw, some youtube comments talked about minstrel shows and how Devdan reminded them of those shows so, I definitely think pointing Devdan's entire existence - down to his concept - isn't racist in itself, you're not committing robbery when you're trying to prevent one.
About Claude and Almyra in general as depicted in Fodlan...
Well, in FE16 the game basically told us that Almyrans - in the Cyril/Hilda paralogue - are people who enjoy senseless bloodbathes (they raid the border for funsies and feast and party if they're able to return home ffs!) and while they might have different values (which is not a bad thing in itself!), they are the kind of people to turn tail and flee even if it means leaving their allies die (what Claude expected Hilda to do in CF!) or their civilian randoms (Cyril was caught by Goneril forces when they raided their camp).
You can't fight anymore when you're dead, so running away isn't always the worst solution, and yet, the way it's depicted (in CF for tears, in VW to shit on Nader) in the game, it's not supposed to be something we see as good/nice/has relevance.
In Nopes Shahid mounts the greastest invasion the Locket has ever known... to show his dad that he has muhrit too and can attack the "cowards" so plz stop mopping about the son who left without writing a letter.
Aka, Almyra sends its troops to invade Fodlan... in a penis measuring contest for the throne.
Yeah.
However, everything falls apart when we play GW's second part.
Now Nader wants to bring "souvenirs" from the war, by - and it's Lorenz who tells us ffs, not Claude, but Lorenz which has all sorts of implications - pillaging the cities they will be conquering.
Claude asks his dad to give him the Almyran Navy - and by ask I mean Nader has him sign the paper while he's half asleep, a bit like what your random kid does when school asks for a parent's written authorisation, you hang the damn paper to your parent while they're doing something else so they sign without really thinking - for his personal fight in Fodlan that consists in...
Killing the CoS? Yes, but also, and more importantly, to get rid of Fodlan's "outdated" values basically by tearing apart the country/its borders.
In a nutshell, in Nopes, FE16!Hilda's racist stereotypes about Almyrans and Almyra are... confirmed.
To sum up, canonwise, Fodlan depicts Almyrans as people who love needless bloodbathes, who prey on the country they're agressing "for fun!" when it's at its lowest point to mount a serious and real invasion to 1/score points in the royal inheritence record, or 2/to effectively bring disorder/kill/remove important pillars of that country because they want to change its "values and traditions" while pillaging and massacring the land as they cross it.
My bad, it's not the 1800s rhetoric about "the orient" it's both this, and a side dose of throwing the worst tropes ever like "invading people to bring them civilisa- i mean, a new set of values".
In a way, Fodlan is worse than Tellius in that regard, because while Devdan is, hopefully, a side character you can forget to recruit, Almyra - through Claude - is a compulsory point to play through when you play the Fodlan games.
Like, the devs - graphic devs at least - really researched and designed outfits, not only based on RL cultures, but to give a distinct flair to Almyra (when they couldn't be assed to do the same for the "mainland fodlan" characters), like Claude's outfits always have a detail (at least one when it's not the barbarossa class!) to tell you that this class/character has ties to this other place, Almyra!
Surely you'd want to know what Almyra is about, right?
:')
And then you learn and wonder, Echoes didn't bother to draw specific outfits reminding the player of RL cultures gor Grieth or the Brigand Boss, so what was Fodlan thinking when they gave those outfits to Claude and Nader? What kind of associations are you supposed to make?
Are we back in the "Kaga said the land of bandits who kidnap to most likely seduce without consent ladies was inspired by Persia? What the actual fuck?" era?
In a way, depicting Almyrans as the "bloodthirsty people who pillage as they go" is, imo, as offensive as Martin's Dothrakis, I don't think you are, or anyone is, racist for pointing it out.

FE fans’ discussions of racism and discriminatory depictions in its casts are always a swing-and-a-miss.
You have people on Twitter saying that the Ravens are an anti-Semitic stereotype that’s on the same level of discriminatory as Danved/Devdan-the actual borderline minstrel show caricature-all because... Raven enemies have coins in their inventory in FE9 and Nealuchi has a more prominent nose. And yes, that’s all. And I’d agree if Kilvas was depicted differently (instead of as a country taken advantage of by oppressive beorc), and the Ravens in general had anti-Semitic design elements instead of one old man having a big nose. But as it is? Don’t get me wrong, the Tellius games’ allegories to racism ebb and flow from serviceable to batshit and gross, and it undercuts itself sometimes because of how it depicts other characters not meant to be the focus. No denying there. But it’s not “Scary black man has scary black face and is called ugly by slave trader and don’t talk good” level.
And I just find it funny that the Ravens are seen as FE’s main anti-Semitic punching bag on Twitter Discourse Land rn, meanwhile, people still short circuit whenever you so much as dare bring up how Edelgard’s treatment of the Nabateans and how her Adrestian Empire in general have some disgusting real life undertones.
Again, swing-and-a-miss.

Cal Lucia plays Fire Emblem Path of Radiance: Chapter 16
Oh damn, I know that track from Smash! Quite the deep cut though to have a random character theme in there, hah.
Pretty rich of Ike to call out Tormod for speaking out of line in front of Sanaki. But, I suppose it also shows a bit of growth, in that he is now more familiar with this world, so I suppose we can let this one slide.
Ahh, so Ike did put two and two together! That's good. He really would have been a bit dense if after all this, he couldn't figure out what those "merchants" were all about. But considering that he's not taking the credit for working this out, the jury on him personally is still out.
Well then, let's look at the base conversations. Only two this time around, hm.
The conversation with Muasir and Tormod. . . well, now there's some heavy stuff. Pretty interesting to read, even if there is not much for me to actually comment on with it.
Stefan's - pfft, what a way to start it. Even Ike's confused where this guy came from. But he offers to teach Ike, and I get a skill out of it, so that's neat. I gotta admit that I haven't really used many of these skills yet, because I'm just not sure which skill to best put on which character, hah.
Got some more support conversations that I wanted to look at! Jill and Mist's is once again short, but it is rather sweet. Ike and Soren's on the other hand. . . well, that's not what I would have expected from a glance into his backstory.
Dumped a whole bunch of bexp into Mist, got her to level 17, and then promoted her, just so that she can do something.
. . .What do you mean, she uses swords now and not magic
Well, off to the actual map. And I really do like the setup for this one! Sneaking into a nobleman's manor for a search is definitely a unique setup for a Fire Emblem map.
Though in terms of gameplay, I have to say that this linear type of map really doesn't play well with anybody but mounted units. I still brought a bunch of unmounted ones, but they are not having a good time.
Huh, I guess all my resetting for good level-ups with Mist did actually pay off. She does have a respectable enough attack stat now, allowing her to do actual damage with a sword to enemies. That's neat.
New character with Devdan! With him. . . well, I think I've seen his design before at least, but not much beyond that. It is a good design though, and he seems like a fun enough guy.
The requirement for maximum bonus experience on this map was eight turns, which. . . yeah, no. I beat the map in 15. I wanted that treasure, and played things a bit carefully, so I guess that was to be expected.
And Reyson is goneson. That whole scene was a bit weirdly resolved, though - neither Oliver nor Reyson leaving was really shown, but I suppose that wasn't really necessary in the end.
And here we go, getting filled in on the massacre of Serene's Forest. And, uh. . . kinda eyebrow-raising that this website is named after that place? But I suppose I can somewhat see it.
Also oof @ Nasir throwing that subtle shade at Sanaki by saying that the empress from 20 years ago was greater than any before or since
I do have to wonder a bit about Sanaki, though. Is she the granddaughter of that empress? Because unless we have a "looks like a child but is actually far older" deal going on, she can't be the daughter of that empress.
Urgh, tough spot to have to stop, though. I do already know that the next two chapters will need to be beaten back-to-back, and the story is going interesting places right now. . . but, I won't actually be able to play for two weeks, since I'll be gone til the 21st from this Wednesday, and I won't really have the time to continue playing before that. But I guess that gives me time to let the story thus far sink in.

Renowned for its tranquil ambiance, luxurious resorts, and an array of enriching experiences, it stands as a premier destination for discerning travelers seeking an idyllic escape. From exhilarating water sports to cultural immersions and blissful relaxation, Nusa Dua offers a curated slice of paradise.
Discovering Nusa Dua: A Haven of Elegance
Unlike the more bustling areas of Bali, Nusa Dua was meticulously developed in the 1970s as a high-end resort enclave, prioritizing luxury, privacy, and impeccable service. This planned approach has resulted in a remarkably well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing environment, where manicured gardens meet turquoise waters.
Best Time to Visit Nusa Dua Beach
The ideal time to experience the splendor of Nusa Dua Beach is during the dry season, from April to September. These months boast abundant sunshine, clear skies, and calm waters, perfect for all beach activities and explorations. While Bali is a year-round destination, the wet season (October to March) brings more rainfall, though often in short, heavy bursts, still allowing for enjoyable moments.
Unwind and Rejuvenate: The Allure of Nusa Dua's Shores
Nusa Dua's beaches are famous for their gentle waves, making them perfect for swimming and families with young children. The soft, powdery sand invites leisurely strolls, while the serene atmosphere provides a perfect backdrop for relaxation.
Mengiat Beach: The Heart of Tranquility
Within Nusa Dua, Mengiat Beach stands out as a prime example of its beauty. This extensive stretch of coastline is known for its exceptionally calm waters and fine white sand, offering an uncrowded haven for sunbathing, swimming, and simply unwinding. You can often find local vendors offering refreshing young coconuts, adding to the authentic beach experience.
Adventure on the Water: Thrilling Water Sports
For those seeking a more active holiday, Nusa Dua offers a vibrant hub for water sports, primarily concentrated in the nearby Tanjung Benoa area.
Exhilarating Activities to Try:
Jet Skiing: Feel the adrenaline rush as you zip across the waves, often with a professional guide ensuring your safety.
Parasailing: Soar high above the ocean, taking in panoramic views of the coastline and the vast Indian Ocean.
Banana Boat & Flying Fish: Enjoy a fun and bumpy ride with friends or family on inflatable boats towed by speedboats.
Snorkeling & Scuba Diving: Explore the vibrant underwater world, teeming with colorful coral reefs and diverse marine life. Many resorts offer guided snorkeling tours, and PADI-certified dive centers are readily available.
Flyboarding: For the ultimate thrill-seeker, experience the sensation of flying as water jets propel you into the air.
Seawalker: Walk along the ocean floor with a special helmet, allowing you to breathe normally and interact with marine life up close.
Beyond the Beach: Cultural and Leisure Pursuits
Nusa Dua is more than just beautiful beaches and exhilarating water sports. The area also boasts a rich tapestry of cultural experiences and leisure activities.
Cultural Immersion:
Devdan Show at Bali Nusa Dua Theatre: Immerse yourself in the rich cultural diversity of Indonesia through this captivating performance, featuring traditional dances, acrobatics, and stunning visuals. It's an excellent option for families and those interested in Indonesian heritage.
Museum Pasifika: A hidden gem for art lovers, this museum houses an impressive collection of over 600 artworks from various artists across the Asia-Pacific region, offering insights into the region's artistic heritage.

Leisure and Relaxation:
Water Blow: Witness the dramatic spectacle of powerful waves crashing against limestone cliffs, creating impressive plumes of spray. It's a popular spot for photography, especially during high tide.
Bali National Golf Club: Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a premier golfing experience at this well-maintained course with stunning views.
Spa and Wellness: Nusa Dua is synonymous with luxurious spa treatments and wellness retreats. Many resorts offer world-class spas where you can indulge in traditional Balinese massages, aromatherapy, and holistic therapies.

Luxury Accommodation and Dining
Nusa Dua is globally recognized for its collection of prestigious five-star resorts and hotels, each offering exceptional service and world-class amenities. From private beachfront villas to expansive resort complexes with multiple pools and dining options, there's a perfect stay for every preference.
Gastronomic Delights:
Nusa Dua's dining scene is a culinary journey, offering everything from authentic Balinese cuisine to international fine dining. Many resorts boast their own signature restaurants with beachfront settings and exquisite menus. You can savor fresh seafood, traditional Indonesian dishes like Nasi Goreng and Satay Skewers, and a wide array of international fare. For a more local flavor, explore Warung Dobiel for its famous Babi Guling (roast pork).
Planning Your Nusa Dua Escape: Practical Tips
Getting There: Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is Bali's main airport. Nusa Dua is a short taxi ride from the airport. While blue bemo (minibuses) serve as local public transport within Nusa Dua, taxis are the most convenient way to travel between hotels and attractions.
Accessibility: Many luxury resorts in Nusa Dua offer accessible facilities and rooms. It's advisable to check with individual hotels for specific accessibility features.
Honeymooners: Nusa Dua is a dream destination for honeymooners, offering romantic strolls along the beach, candlelit dinners, couple's spa treatments, and breathtaking sunset views.
Photography: The pristine beaches, dramatic cliffs at Water Blow, and lush resort landscapes provide ample opportunities for stunning photography. Drone views of the coastline are particularly captivating.
Conservation Efforts: The Nusa Dua Reef Foundation, in collaboration with local communities and hotels, is actively involved in sea turtle conservation, protecting nesting habitats along the beach.
Nusa Dua Beach truly embodies the essence of a luxurious Balinese getaway. Whether you seek tranquility, adventure, cultural enrichment, or simply a pampered escape, this exquisite destination promises an unforgettable experience, leaving you with cherished memories of Bali's unparalleled beauty.
Conclusion: Your Idyllic Bali Dream Awaits in Nusa Dua

It's a destination where the gentle lapping of turquoise waves against pristine white sands creates a symphony of tranquility, offering a stark yet welcome contrast to some of the island's more bustling locales.

Radiant Dawn, Part Two!
Poor Elincia. She got her happy ending, and then the sequel happened and it turns out that ruling a country sucks, actually.
Based on how hard the Dawn Brigade was struggling, I was worried about what the prologue would be like, but it was a breeze--it's a survive eight turns chapter, but I'd defeated everyone by the start of the eighth turn.
Elincia is surprisingly good? She doesn't hit very hard (and needs a better sword) but she's so fast the only person who managed to hit her was the boss (and even then he got lucky, the hit chance was like 25%).
Something very satisfying about defeating a wing of arrogant Beignon dracoknights with two pegasus knights and a defector from their ranks.
Nephenee! My girl!
Okay, so Brom does switch weapons between games. I feel less stupid now.
Love that Heather's motivation for joining up is to meet pretty girls. Good for her.
I know Elincia/Geoffrey is the canon pairing, but Elincia/Lucia is way more compelling. The naive young queen and her devoted childhood friend who's ruthless enough to do whatever it takes to keep her on the throne.
Whereas Elincia and Geoffrey are both similar levels of idealistic and sweet, so their relationship is cute but not particularly interesting.
And the scene where Elincia sews a talisman into Lucia's collar... I need them to kiss.
Experimenting with actually using Heather sometimes, and she's not bad. As always, I am suffering in being interested in more characters than it's actually practical to train.
Already thinking about who I'm going to bring to the Part Four endgame, and Lucia is a tempting option (Nephenee is already on the list, of course), especially because I'd like to take advantage of ending up with Alondite. I was thinking I could bring Elincia also, but I know I'll want to bring Tanith, which means I'll also have to bring Sigrun (they're a set!), and three pegasus knights is a bit much. Wouldn't hurt to have another healer, though...
(Tragic that pegasus knights' sword ranks cap at S, giving Tanith Alondite would solve some problems and also just be very satisfying. Gotta keep it within the family, and by family I mean Sanaki and her two dads and two moms.)
Lucia's group of spies in Ch 2 is hilarious. Surely no one will notice eight people, including four laguz and two farmers-turned-militiamen, sneaking around the castle!
Someone give Elincia a hug, please.
Danved, who is definitely not Devdan. What a baffling guy.
I hate how Astrid's entire personality has been reduced to her crush on Makalov. Bad enough that they took an interesting and complicated character and wrapped her around a guy, but the fact that Makalov is one of the most annoying and useless characters in the game just adds insult to injury. Especially since Marcia already has to clean up after him all the time. Ugh.
Also extremely annoying that she was one of my best units in PoR (made it to level 20 and just missed being in my top five), but she starts at level 2 while Makalov is level 7 and Geoffrey and Kieran are both in the teens. What the hell.
Though between bonus exp and Paragon she's now level 9, so that's fine. And I killed with Ch 3 boss with her, which is something that's never happened before.
Maybe it's just that I no longer have to deal with the Dawn Brigade, but I'm having much more fun with Part Two. It's a nice mix of scales and objectives, so it's keeping things much more interesting (and I've only had to reset once). And the endgame is one of my favorite chapters to play in the whole game, though I'm fond of siege chapters in general.
"Apparently Daein's reconstruction is playing out much like Crimea's... It's almost unnatural." You don't say.
Geoffrey and co. always show up earlier in the chapter than I remember. Though that means I have to spend seven turns trying to prevent them from dying.
I stuck Heather and Nephenee (and Calil) on the wall with knives and javelins, and both of them broke new weapons and got down to less than ten uses left on the second set. Busy busy.
I am not immune to the movie of the Greil Mercenaries rescuing Lucia at the end. Especially now that I've played PoR.
Oh look, it's Shinon, back from the dead.
Immediately following up Ike and Elincia's conversation about the Black Knight with the shot of Zelgius in the "next time" trailer... I see what you did there.
This part really got me this time around. In the past it's felt like a weird little sideshow (and honestly everything it's doing could have been folded into two or three chapters of Part Three instead), but this time it really landed for me emotionally. Maybe it's the added context of PoR, maybe I just really like the characters (and Elincia's arc in particular), but I enjoyed this way more than I did Part One.
And next up, Part Three, which really is the game for me.

cross-posted from my facebook:
To borrow from the legendary Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour: it’s been a long time coming. For the past six months, after realising that SMA is progressing at a rapid rate in my body now and having a breakdown in part due to that, my mum and I reached out to Ray of Hope. We asked if they could help me with financial access to a $375,000/yr treatment that will halt the disease progression the way they helped baby Zayn and Devdan. We asked if we could fundraise for enough to stabilise my condition for a year, while we see what MOH does with supporting the treatment for SMA patients. Last Friday, my fundraiser was posted: https://rayofhope.sg/campaign/sherry/
It wasn’t an easy decision to ask Ray of Hope for help. At several points, I nearly pulled out. Firstly, it’s a sensitive issue to ask people for money, and doing so is intensely stigmastised in Singapore because healthcare and finances are seen as highly personal responsibilities. Second, I was worried about the impact public recognition might have on myself and my family. And third, did I really want to put a price tag on my life?
But facts are: I wasn’t the one who put a price tag on my life. The manufacturer of the treatment, Roche, was the one who put the $375K/yr price tag on my life and the lives of other SMA patients. (Which, by the way, is more than five times what the average non-disabled Singaporean earns.) And I’m fundraising because of my family as well. My brother Gabriel reminded me of that when he told me that, when I almost died in the hospital last September, he was afraid I’d die without seeing him fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor.
I want to be there for Gabriel at his med school graduation. I want to take my dad to Taylor Swift’s latest tour after he took me to her last Singapore show and said her music makes him feel young again. I want my mum to see me achieve greater things in my career after seeing she was far more ecstatic than I was about me contributing to Not Without Us, Singapore’s first Disability Studies anthology. I want to be there when my best friend Brianna Albers, who has used every opportunity she’s had to advocate for me to be treated, is a published novelist. I want to go to all the family events I’m invited to for years to come. I want to see who else God wants me to meet, because almost everyone I’ve met so far have been lights in the darkness.
It’s important to remember that time with our loved ones and fulfilling our dreams is a right every SMA patient should have. Without treatment or a miracle, the odds of us having those things decreases significantly with time. It used to be something we had to accept, but that’s not true anymore. And it’s why, if I don’t raise enough to fund the minimum span of time it would take for the treatment to stabilise me, whatever I’ve raised will go towards the next SMA patient fundraising through Ray of Hope. Because there will be more, and I want to do my part. And even if you can’t or don’t want to donate to me, I hope you do your part by spreading awareness of SMA, this life-saving treatment, and the injustice of its cost.

PoR JP/EN script differences overview: (Part 6) ch #16 - ch #17
The Oliver and herons show.
→ Main Index — Begin reading here ←
Chapter 16
1) Oliver appears prominently. There is nothing much about him except one detail: as we start to notice in the chapter before this one, the localisation liberally sprinkles "fat" and its synonyms into speech of every other character as a means to insult Oliver. The original script doesn't have it even once.
2) Sanaki debriefing Ike/Tormod. There is a small detail that wouldn't be noticed if the translation choice wasn't tonally dissonant.
Ike: You want to expose the depravity of the inner circles of power. But you don't want the general public to know that the majority of the senate is involved in slavery. Sanaki: I thought you were as untutored as a wild monkey. You're actually quite bright.
EN!Ike: I didn't figure it all out by myself. I have companions whom I trust with my life. They helped.
"Trust with my life"? It was a simple consultation, not a life and death situation.
JP!Ike: ……I'm not thinking about it alone, you know. I have companion(s) to rely on.
What makes the original choice notable is 頼りになる ("reliable"), because Ike uses it again in Epilogue vs Sephiran:
JP!Ike: I've always had people by my side that I could rely on. That's why… it was possible to do it.
And, to lesser extent, it's the qualifier that Soren uses in his A support with Ike instead of saying "I have no friends".
JP!Soren: I have… only you to rely on.
I'm not sure if it's the same "reliable" as in "Likes: Reliable people" in Soren's official profile, but — it's likely. All in all, it seems somewhat significant for the game.
3) Muarim☆. Personally, I dislike it when Tellius translation dances around the word "love" when it should have used it, because it's a major motif in FE9/10.
EN!Ike: I know I don't know everything that's going on, but you shouldn't be trying to push Tormod away. He's dedicated to you […]
JP!Ike: I don't know what your reasons are, but don't force Tormod, who adores you so much, away from you.
Lesser detail from the same base convo points out once again how polite Muarim was trained to be. He is the only person we recruit who uses the standard "Nice to meet you" phrase and Ike replies with a standard polite phrase as well.
EN!Muarim: "May our friendship be true and enduring." JP!Muarim: "From now on, I'm looking forward to working with you."
4) Titania goes sneaking around Oliver's mansion with Mist for a reason.
EN!Titania: If we get stopped, we can talk our way out of it. JP!Titania: If something happens, women can talk their way out of anything…
5) Devdan has recruitment dialogue that is largely repeated. The only thing to note is that Soren is visibly pissed off (with ellipses) when Devdan calls him a kid twice. Sothe uses the impolite "you" on him, while Soren uses the polite "you", Rolf and Mist use "uncle" and Tormod uses "old man" plus the same "you" as Sothe. Devdan alternately calls himself a man of honor, an ally of justice (twice), an ally of kids, and once he says he will do his best.
6) Oliver says "shit" (just before Ike and co discover Reyson). It's official.
Chapter 17
1) The original script tells us that Oliver is somehow the dead last of senators.
JP!Soren: Duke Tanas is still a senator, even if the last/most junior in position… He must still have a large number of private troops with him. Surprisingly, he's a tricky opponent…
2) EN script uses "seid magic" to describe singing of herons. That is a decent choice, because JP script says "herons are galdrar, meaning singers of galdr", which is complete bullshit. "Galdrar" is the plural form of "galdr" — thankfully the localisers knew as much.
3) Unfortunately, FE10 didn't happen yet.
EN!Nasir: Herons are highly attuned to the forces of balance. JP!Nasir: They are a race that is as close to "Order" as possible.
And later.
EN!Tibarn: You must not let yourself be ruled by despair! Each member of the heron tribe is an embodiment of balance! Do this, and you warp your very existence! JP!Tibarn: Don't let your feeling of hatred take over! You heron people belong to Order… and if you violate that, your existence will be distorted!
4) Speaking of Reyson, he is getting murdery.
EN!Reyson: With permission or without, I do what I must! It is retribution for genocide! Retribution for this forest! JP!Reyson: Even if I don't get your permission, I will do it! It's my clan's revenge…! The forest surely wants it too!
6) Still speaking of herons, after they sing the revival galdr the translation says "heart of the forest has returned", but the original calls it "lords of the forest have returned".
7) Boyd making fun of Mist (about Leanne's weight) and getting a well-deserved kick is even more deserved originally.
EN!Boyd: Did you know you're two times heavier than she is!? I'm glad I don't have to carry you around! It'd be like wearing an extra suit of armor! JP!Boyd: You're "twice" as heavy as that white girl. From what I can see, your hips and thighs are suspiciously…

a while back i did a review of the prison chapter in por and it was totally overblown and whatever but i kinda wanna do that again for (what remains of) radiant dawn so i guess i will
I'll be doing them in batches since this got long. In this post: 3-5 through 3-9
3-5: it's been two years and i forget why we have to defend this castle
this was a pretty alright map. the reinforcements were annoying but that's because I generally don't actually turtle all that much on defend chapters and as a result I was Right There whenever and wherever they showed up. I tried to grab the energy drop off the boss but the dude ran away from Heather the moment I created an opening and I didn’t want to reset so :^/
I moved provoke off of shinon and onto Brom for this and its... probably way too strong? like it wasn't a 100% draw rate but there were several turns in a row where he was the only person being attacked which is. insane. and also super fun lmao. I think it's a shame that the hostility mechanics in fe aren't as well documented; on some level it ruins the magic, but in cases like this where you're actively influencing it i think it'd be useful to know to what degree you're actually influencing it
disarm + steal is also a really neat/fun idea that would be a great way to counteract how i apparently will never have any money for weapons while playing as the greilgallia party crew 😔 (not to be confused with the greilgallia polycule, which disbanded around twenty years earlier) but I can also never get disarm to proc and half the things that i was able to get unequipped were too heavy for Heather to actually steal 😔
all around a decent map to ease myself back into playing rd with. I certainly could have played better, but defend maps tend to be easier and I appreciated that here
3-6: dawn brigade returns and promptly sinks into a swamp
god this map sucked. it's really hard to pick where to start with it but while i get that lore dictates that they need to only be fighting laguz right here it was probably the wrong gameplay decision with everything else that was going on. I think maybe making tigers have ~4 less str across the board would have been a nice start since I kinda needed to either never get hit by them at all or to kill them first.
several chapters later I’m also realizing maybe i should have like. started to use bexp lol
fighting laguz is also really weird in terms of like... because they have boosted stats while transformed so you can either kill them while they're untransformed (which is fairly easy but since they don't attack, you have to kill them during player phase which means one per turn per unit), deal chip damage (or none at all) to burn down their gauge so you can actually kill them, or try to power through their boosted stats and hope you don’t die in the process.
Because I hadn't used bexp and almost all my units were super weak, I mostly had to rely on the eff against beasts knife that you can buy in the bargain shop this chapter and also volug, who had enough def (even with halfshift) to not die in one round. Honorable mentions go to noland (a fitting name for this map), jill (with canto!), and zihark, who were able to help pick off untransformed laguz, and to micaiah, who could deal magic damage and actually damage transformed laguz.
this was also the first dawn brigade map! i know lots of people people dont like their maps after act 1 and while i was trying to go into this one with an open mind... yeah, they totally got shafted by this map design. it's not really their fault but this map sucked hard. I know that they generally did one of each class variant (fire mage, wind mage, etc.) and not have duplicates but I think that the dawn brigade would have benefited from another mage of some kind if only so you could have someone who could deal with all these goddamned cats
also bk shows up but since he's not a bonus unit i didn't want to feed him kills so i didnt really use him. maybe that was a mistake. also why couldn't he like. warp someone that wasn't the furthest away from the action.
3-7: hey so we heard you liked the previous map
Zihark is there? fuck this i'm reverting to a previous save and unrecruiting him
3-6: i forgot to mention that this map was a swamp map and also had darkness
I know I've mentioned that the similar map in fe6 (desert+fog) was actually kinda alright but this one isnt that at all. Playing through it a second time helped because i knew where enemies were spawning, but it was still more annoying than fun.
Swamps commit the cardinal sin of forcing everyone that can't fly (in this case: everyone but jill) to suffer massive terrain penalties. Deserts at least let mages move a little bit further (which admittedly wouldn't help much here since it's only micaiah and laura), but here everyone friend and foe alike (except Jill) moves slowly and it makes gameplay just grind to a halt which is never, ever fun level design.
Also Fiona just. could not move beyond the starting island. she couldn't even wade a little bit into the swamp like i did with ed and leo to attack at range and get laguz to untransform. they let you deploy everyone but it genuinely felt like i wasn't handed the tools to succeed at this map. always a great goal to have when designing a game
I don't know how to improve this map. unrecruiting zihark (by flying him up to the northeast with jill and having him talk to mordy/lethe) wasn't particularly difficult (battle saves make it easy enough to scout out where they were, and it's not like i'd ever feel bad about 'cheating' on this map) but... would a greater field of view actually help? would making it not a swamp actually help? would giving you more allied units that'll throw themselves in the face of danger with no regard for their own lives actually help?
I don't know.
3-7: but for real this time
Back to ikequest!
this map is... literally the same map as the previous one, but with a different map objective. and larger. and backwards. and not at night.
it's still a swamp.
Luckily, it's a survive map, and the vast majority of the enemy force does not have the time to actually reach you if you hide up in the corner.
Which is exactly what i did.
Here's the list of the optional units (ike and ranulf are mandatory, which sucks because i don't like using twinks cat laguz and ike's plot promotion feels miles away) I deployed and why I deployed them
Haar: to fly out and recruit Jill
Gatrie: to be carried by Haar and specifically to bait the single thunder mage in Haar's way (and help Haar clean out that area so Jill can be safely recruited). I gave him corrosion two maps ago and it actually fully disarmed a guy on this map! 🎊
Brom: stand near where the swamp ends and draw the handful of enemies that actually make it all the way there away from ike and ranulf and ulki and jaffar (who are auto-recruits in this chapter).
This map is. so incredibly easy to both beat and complete the (meaningful) optional objectives on. I missed a conversation between Ike and Micaiah (which requires you to travel all the way across the map that i just finished saying takes forever to traverse and do it in 12 turns), but as long as you unrecruit Zihark on the previous map (he's.... right in the middle of the main force so good luck if you don't) you can probably do this map first try with no deaths even if you haven't trained haargatriebrom At All
I think that kinda underscores a problem that intsys had with rd which was... it feels like they didn't really have a lot of time to fine-tune stuff? like you're going from the hardest (or at least most unpleasant) map to the easiest one this side of the tutorial and it just. doesn't feel good? like there's going to be some inherent difficulty in balancing a difficulty curve when you're shifting from party to party but. this was bad. really bad.
Also a side observation but it does actually say who units can talk to in battle prep which is pretty useful thing to have! you need to shift the stat spreadsheet allllll the way over, but it's there!
i promptly forgot about it by the time 3-10 came around and was like "hey i should just. have ike run up to elincia, see if they'll talk, and then reset" though lol
3-8: Less-than-Lethal Lava Land
A fairly standard lava cave map. My only real comment here is that it was kinda nice how they made the spots where you'd take damage fairly obvious while still making them appear as natural parts of the terrain. I think it was the durandal map in 7 but its "if you're on these at the end of the turn you'll take damage" tiles looked super out of place while the armads map on the other hand wasn't super self-evident and i'm glad they improved
3-9: still cant use lucia >:(
Another party shift (this time to Elincia), and there was some good use of ledges in this chapter!
Most of your units couldn't use them but it created alternate paths for the ones that could (Calill and Devdan). Previous maps tended to use them more as holes in your defenses than needed to be plugged, but it created ways to progress (and ways for reinforcements to catch up) that are usually reserved for flying units, except now you're interacting with the map instead of ignoring it completely.
I think I've yet to meet someone who genuinely likes ledges as a map element, though I think this map really drives home that the sole (inherent) problem with them is the accuracy modifications (which, as this map also demonstrates when the stairs near the end become a chokepoint, are actually present with all elevation changes). While the +2 damage dealt while on the high ground is reasonable, +50 and especially -50 to hitrate are insane and completely unnecessary modifiers. They should be half that if you even choose to retain both.
Anyway.
the absolute lack of a (player-controlled) healer in Elincia's party was also........ interesting. Annoying, but interesting. Why must allied clerics choose death?1

Note
I love your Fire Emblem observations and really love your takes on Three Houses and the other games in the series. I haven’t seen many posts of yours talking about the Tellius games (although Tumblr makes it impossible to find stuff that you really want to), but I saw you say once that the Branded were a sort of proof of divine retribution of sorts against Laguz and Beorc interbreeding, which is the impression I get too. So how come neither Yune nor Ashera ever say anything other than “huh”?
I haven’t played the Tellius games in a long time so I haven’t had much occasion to write about them.
Per the base conversation between Stefan and Yune the goddess(es) didn’t even know that the Branded existed, much less that producing them physically cripples their laguz parents. This leads me to believe that we’re meant to take this as some sort of inexplicable natural phenomenon that maybe kind of makes sense if the laguz is the mother (so you wouldn’t end up with the strange and possibly fatal instance of a dragon or giant bird having to give live birth to a human infant) but also applies if the father is the laguz, ex. Lehran, so it’s still pretty silly.
Of course, this has the side effect of shooting these games’ anti-racism narratives in the foot at the last minute, because the apparent conclusion is that racial mixing is bad. That does seem to track with typical Japanese attitudes on the subject (see also: Devdan/Danved from these games, a caricature of an African man played totally straight that the localizations had a hell of a time trying to soften), but in my opinion it just goes to show that the writers of these games were not attempting to tackle race and racial tensions as serious themes.
Rather, they were more interested in expanding the concept of shapeshifting demihumans that had been established in earlier games with the manakete as well as playing around with the idea of “holy” blood as it appeared in the Jugdral games. The Branded aren’t venerated as superhumans and allowed to rule over their feudal society because their ancestors were magically imbued with dragon blood manifesting in brands (or as you might also call them...crests) on their bodies, but the despised products of interracial sex hated and feared for the special qualities bestowed upon them by their blood. You can see later games in the series doing some of this as well. Awakening and Fates introduce more new types of non-draconic shapeshifters, while Three Houses purports to be all about Crests which are mostly back in the hands of the landed nobility but are also shown to have all sorts of negative effects on individuals and on society at large. Here the message flops not necessarily because of the game’s writing but because of marketing and fandom reaction. Edelgard’s crusade against Crests is deeply hypocritical and doesn’t actually do anything to combat their abuse in any significant way because she’s too busy scapegoating the person and organization that she knows are not truly responsible for creating and privileging Crests and Relics, while Dimitri’s character and the resolution to AM are more genuinely concerned with reducing the overall value of Crests in society although it’s hardly a central element of his arc.
