what do you of people who think that pointing out how problematic claude and almyra are in the fodlan games is racist?
?
You mean people who think you are racist for noticing that Claude and Almyra in general were written with the worst orientalist clichés from the early 1810s?
As a rule of thumb, I don't believe you can determine if someone is racist or not based on their opinion of fictional characters -
That being said, there's a difference between saying "I think Devdan sucks" and whatever goes down in the chamber pot, using real world rhetoric about "invasive species" and whatnot to throw shade at fictional characters you don't like.
@gascon-en-exil made a Tellius video about Devdan's uh... well, Devdan in general in Tellius and the wtf that was Devdan in a game released in the 2000s, internationally released at that - and fwiw, some youtube comments talked about minstrel shows and how Devdan reminded them of those shows so, I definitely think pointing Devdan's entire existence - down to his concept - isn't racist in itself, you're not committing robbery when you're trying to prevent one.
About Claude and Almyra in general as depicted in Fodlan...
Well, in FE16 the game basically told us that Almyrans - in the Cyril/Hilda paralogue - are people who enjoy senseless bloodbathes (they raid the border for funsies and feast and party if they're able to return home ffs!) and while they might have different values (which is not a bad thing in itself!), they are the kind of people to turn tail and flee even if it means leaving their allies die (what Claude expected Hilda to do in CF!) or their civilian randoms (Cyril was caught by Goneril forces when they raided their camp).
You can't fight anymore when you're dead, so running away isn't always the worst solution, and yet, the way it's depicted (in CF for tears, in VW to shit on Nader) in the game, it's not supposed to be something we see as good/nice/has relevance.
In Nopes Shahid mounts the greastest invasion the Locket has ever known... to show his dad that he has muhrit too and can attack the "cowards" so plz stop mopping about the son who left without writing a letter.
Aka, Almyra sends its troops to invade Fodlan... in a penis measuring contest for the throne.
Yeah.
However, everything falls apart when we play GW's second part.
Now Nader wants to bring "souvenirs" from the war, by - and it's Lorenz who tells us ffs, not Claude, but Lorenz which has all sorts of implications - pillaging the cities they will be conquering.
Claude asks his dad to give him the Almyran Navy - and by ask I mean Nader has him sign the paper while he's half asleep, a bit like what your random kid does when school asks for a parent's written authorisation, you hang the damn paper to your parent while they're doing something else so they sign without really thinking - for his personal fight in Fodlan that consists in...
Killing the CoS? Yes, but also, and more importantly, to get rid of Fodlan's "outdated" values basically by tearing apart the country/its borders.
In a nutshell, in Nopes, FE16!Hilda's racist stereotypes about Almyrans and Almyra are... confirmed.
To sum up, canonwise, Fodlan depicts Almyrans as people who love needless bloodbathes, who prey on the country they're agressing "for fun!" when it's at its lowest point to mount a serious and real invasion to 1/score points in the royal inheritence record, or 2/to effectively bring disorder/kill/remove important pillars of that country because they want to change its "values and traditions" while pillaging and massacring the land as they cross it.
My bad, it's not the 1800s rhetoric about "the orient" it's both this, and a side dose of throwing the worst tropes ever like "invading people to bring them civilisa- i mean, a new set of values".
In a way, Fodlan is worse than Tellius in that regard, because while Devdan is, hopefully, a side character you can forget to recruit, Almyra - through Claude - is a compulsory point to play through when you play the Fodlan games.
Like, the devs - graphic devs at least - really researched and designed outfits, not only based on RL cultures, but to give a distinct flair to Almyra (when they couldn't be assed to do the same for the "mainland fodlan" characters), like Claude's outfits always have a detail (at least one when it's not the barbarossa class!) to tell you that this class/character has ties to this other place, Almyra!
Surely you'd want to know what Almyra is about, right?
:')
And then you learn and wonder, Echoes didn't bother to draw specific outfits reminding the player of RL cultures gor Grieth or the Brigand Boss, so what was Fodlan thinking when they gave those outfits to Claude and Nader? What kind of associations are you supposed to make?
Are we back in the "Kaga said the land of bandits who kidnap to most likely seduce without consent ladies was inspired by Persia? What the actual fuck?" era?
In a way, depicting Almyrans as the "bloodthirsty people who pillage as they go" is, imo, as offensive as Martin's Dothrakis, I don't think you are, or anyone is, racist for pointing it out.

Note
I don't get why people hate on different fire emblem games. I've had a lovely time with every game I've played, even fates, which people for some reason insist sucks? It's so good. Here's my favorite things about each game I've played just cause. I am very sick so no one can criticize me btw.
Binding: obviously goes for all gba games but the battle animations are so!!!!! Lovely and charming. Roy's just a silly guy, Lilina :], the cast is excellent, everyone from the most insignificant playable characters to the nastiest of villains like Narcian and Jahn is just so fun and nicely written.
Blazing: I LOVE THE ELIBEAN LORDS SO MUCH THEY HAVE MY ENTIRE HEART AND SOUL. I think fe7 has my favorite cast. Everyone is awesome like in fe6 but cranked up a notch. And I quite like how this game isn't about war!!! Lyn's just trying to save her grandpa and Eliwood is searching for his dad. There's some hints of civil war here and there but ultimately less war than usual which is quite fun and interesting.
Sacred stones: I adore how the game is like. almost horror. In my ideal fe8 remake they would lean into the horror aspect a more and maybe have a higher age rating. I really love how it starts out like any other fe game then you start to see monsters and then there's the necromancy and characters like Riev who worship this vile demonic thing. And the art director for this game was Wada Sachiko! She was such an excellent choice for the art director because her style leans into the darker feel than fe6 and 7. Also I'm a Christian so I do really enjoy L'Arachel's character where she's obviously inspired by Christianity but not in an offensive way. She's a nice god(s) (?) honoring teenage girl full of whimsy and optimism!!! Also I love Eirika. Did a cosplay of her once and gotta say, I felt drop dead gorgeous in it lol.
Path of radiance: I have yet to finish this one but oh MAN do I love the artstyle and combat and character design. Not a single bad character, they're all nicely written. Except Devdan but he's not real if we ignore him. I love how believable Ike and Mist are as siblings and I got say I actually find the bad voice acting to be charming, especially in that opening cutscene where Mist says something like "you're finally awake! 'bout time!" like she's so silly and cute I would die for her. I also really love how Ike is not royalty, he's just some guy!!! With autism!!! Like for a while my view of Ike was kinda skewed by looking at super smash bros content of him so then playing the game and discovering he's such a kind, reasonable and autistic dude was a very pleasant surprise. Seriously though this dude NEEDS to get assessed. Anyway I quite like the laguz too. Reyson, Tibarn and Caineghis are my favorites and I'm excited to see more of Kurthnaga because he's got such a pleasant design. Also just. Caineghis is probably one of my top favorite character designs ever, like top 20. It goes so unbelievably hard.
Awakening: THE TRAGEDY. THE TRAGEDY OF EMMERYN'S DEATH. UWAAAGHHHHH. I love LOVE how Emmeryn is written, how you can't save her despite Lucina being able to time travel, how you're given the options "save Emmeryn? Yes or no?" and it doesn't matter if you pick yes cause she dies anyway. The cast is not quite on the same tier as fe7 or 8 and there's certainly some characters I do not like but my favorites really are just so wonderful and lovely. I'd kill and die for Henry, Maribelle, Libra, Gregor and like 5 other people. The child unit mechanic is also very fun! It's such a clever idea for a time travel game and it gives you so much control over how your units end up. The self sacrifice ending also makes me feel sick. /pos "there's better places to take a nap than on the ground, you know. Here, give me your hand" and then Robin reaches out to Chrom and the symbol of Grima is gone and when he pulls them in closer, he says "it's finally over." just. Ahdhdjsjsjsj!!!!!!!
Fates: now, I've only played birthright but it was a very nice experience. I went in expecting nothing and had my socks blown off. Combat is fun, characters are so silly billy and it's got such a nicely done representation of a broken families. It's nice. The characters and supports are nice, even if I do feel like we could've had a few less support chains. And idc if I doesn't make sense story wise, bringing back child units was fun!! Again with the unit customization but also it's so fun to give your favorite character a teenage/preteen kid that they have to deal with. Azama and Mitama's supports are peak silly. I think people would enjoy birthright more if they took it a little less seriously. It's full of whimsy and people ignore that in favor of comparing it to more serious games which I think is kinda unfair.
Shadows of Valentia: oh MAN. I LOVE THE TWO ARMIES MECHANIC!!!! And bangin' cast! Absolutely adore almost every single one of those gay bitches!!! The artstyle is so gorgeous and I hated the combat at first but grew a soft spot for it, it's so strange and I like it!!! Also the game is less hefty so my computer had an easier time running it than POR, awakening and fates which is quite nice too. I love Berkut's character (I won't defend him, he's a son of a bitch) and MAN Ian Sinclair really went HAM on that voice acting!!! Also Zeke and Tatiana feel handcrafted for me specifically. Angsty married couple? Where one has amnesia?? And the other is worried he'll leave her if he remembers another woman he was dating??? And they're voiced by Patrick Seitz and Cristina Vee, two of my favorite voice actors ever??????? SIGN ME UP!!!! I'm excited to eventually play the Marth games and see what else is up with Zeke :] also adore Celica, Silque, Jesse and Boey! Very nice, solid characters.
Three houses: different routes! DIFFERENT ROUTES!!!! You get to see all sides of a war and it's so fun piecing together the history of Fodlan and nature of Rhea's character as you play each route. And again, excellent voice acting!! And it was fun being in the 3h fandom when it first came out and seeing all the silly things the VAs did together. I've got like 400 hours on this game and it holds a special place in my heart cause it was the very first game I finished without help from siblings and it was my first fe game. Also banging soundtrack, fun and unique combat (LOVE battalions) and amazing characters.
Enage: now I'm only 8 chapters in, I think? Haven't been able to play it recently. But it's so fun! Before getting it, I hated the bright artstyle and character designs but they've grown on me and I have been enlightened so I now know that f!Alear is a cutie patootie and I love her. I love the mechanic of adopting animals. Like I am quite happy recent fe games have, in some aspects, become more a little more lighthearted and silly. I love variation in game series' and when the devs aren't way too formulaic!!! That being said I also love the archetypes!!! I just really love fire emblem :]
I'm excited to finish engage and POR and play more of the games :]
Sorry about the long ass ask, I'm full of love and I want people to know it because I wish other people could learn to be a little more positive and focus on the aspects of fe games that they like instead of being hardcore haters. Okay now everyone say thank you Senri Kita (fe9 art director) and Wada Sachiko
.

I hate how an idea will randomly grip me and then I cannot stop thinking about it.
Currently, the idea that has me in a headlock is that I want to try a "girls and gays" run of PoR and RD, in which I exclusively use characters that are girls and/or characters that I personally headcanon to be queer in some manner.
So for PoR, that would include:
Ike (gay ace), Titania (girl), Oscar (bi), Soren (gay), Mia (girl, ace), Ilyana (girl), Mist (girl), Marcia (girl), Lethe (girl, bi), Kieran (gay), Nephenee (girl, gay), Sothe (trans, bi), Jill (bi), Astrid (girl), Calil (girl), Tanith (girl, gay), Janaff (trans, gay), Ulki (bi), Reyson (gay), Devdan (gay), Ranulf (bi), Lucia (girl, bi), Ena (girl), Elincia (girl), Tibarn (bi), Naesala (bi), and Giffca (gay).
Which seems quite doable.
Unfortunately, it would leave me unable to use Boyd and Rolf, but some sacrifices have to be made.
But I think part 1 of RD would give me trouble, because then I would only have Micaiah for the first few chapters, until I get Laura and Sothe. Things will get easier once I recruit Ilyana and Jill, and maybe I'll even get a rare good Meg. But otherwise, it will be rough-going. Especially on that chapter where I have to rescue the civilians of Marado before the Begnion army slaughters them all...
Beyond that initial rough start, I will be able to use all the characters I could in PoR plus...
Fiona (girl), Vika (girl, bi), Nailah (girl, bi), Rafiel (bi), Zelgius (gay), Leanne (girl), Heather (girl, gay), Kyza (transfem, bi), Lyre (girl), Sigrun (girl, bi), Skrimir (gay), Sanaki (girl), Pelleas (bi), Caineghis (gay), and Sephiran (bi).
And I guess also Kurthnaga since you're kinda forced to take him along in Endgame.
(Maybe I should rename the run to "Girls, gays and Kurth")
Anyway, it sounds like a fun challenge, but idk if I'm the one who should be attempting it.

More throwback art! Making this account has really made me realize how seldom I make finished pieces 😂
This piece is a study of D&D characters in chibi, completes May 2021. Probably took me about 20 minutes to do, so. Honestly not worth the professionalism of this description 😆 Horace and Kaire (left and right ends respectively) are characters of some friends, while Devdan (center) is the intellectual property of yours truly.
As a disclaimer, these characters were created for a 5e-based oneshot, but exploring Alternate Universes is fun, so this doodle displays the characters in an Actor!AU setting. If you play RPGs and haven't thought about what it would be like for your character to play themselves as an actor in an alternate universe, I highly recommend it 🙌

Yes I know Devdan/Danved is an awful racist stereotype but please please don’t pretend he doesn’t exist or isn’t supposed to be a person of color that does not help anything

Identity of Devdan
Devdan is an integral character in Number Eight's backstory as after the death of his Cepan, he acted as a mentor to Eight. Devdan is described as 'spiritual man' by Eight and was able to recognize Eight after initially meeting him in the form of a rabbit.
Devdan taught Eight about Hinduism and inspired his future Vishnu disguise and his forms as well as trained him in Indian Martial Arts - not only that, he guided him in using his Legacies. According to Eight, Devdan never returned to their usual meeting spot and it's assumed he was killed by the Mogadorians.
Now most people assumed that Devdan was Pittacus in disguise but Pittacus was confirmed dead by Malcolm as he died in his garage shortly before the Garde and their Cepan arrived on Earth and his skeleton is still there to prove it. My theory is that Devdan is a Demi-Loric and the son or descendant of the Oracle - a female Garde with especially strong precognitive abilities and the creator of the paintings in the Himalayan Cave.
I believe this because the Oracle secluded herself within the Loric Cave in the Himalayas which isn't far from where Eight grew up in India. This would explain Devdan's knowledge on Legacies and how he was able to recognize Eight as if the Oracle was his mother she could've foresaw their meeting.
TLDR - Devdan wasn't Pittacus and instead was a Demi-Loric son/descendant of the Oracle

Lucia plays Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn: Part 2 Chapter 3
So now we're following Geoffrey. . . I haven't really commented on it yet, but I think it's pretty interesting how the game jumps around with the cast like this. To some extent it reminds me of some of the DLC maps for Fire Emblem Fates, where you get a whole new set of characters and then need to figure out how to best deal with them in the situation they're given. But in this case, I suppose all these characters are coming together later on, so this isn't like it's all a one-and-done kind of deal. I'm vaguely aware of which character is available in what way later on, but I can imagine that if I were truly 100% blind in my playthrough of this, this would be a bit frustrating while making it difficult to get attached to an individual character.
So Geoffrey is getting his desire for violence satisfied. Four chapter with four different main characters now.
It's actually pretty interesting to get specific numbers for how many soldiers Crimea is fielding in terms of the story for once. 6000 total. . . that's a lot. This is really just a half-remembered anecdote, but in actual historic battles, I think if you had hundreds of soldiers it was already a lot. Which is just to say, fantasy writers throwing out big numbers with no real concept.
But either way - Lord Ludveck Duke of Felirae having exact information of what's going on on Elincia's side. . . alright, who's the spy this time?
KIERAN IS BACK! Funniest guy.
As for base conversations - . . .oh no, Makalov's back. And he's. . . hitting on Geoffrey? Now that'd be a funny pairing.
But Callil, Largo, Stella, and Devdan- excuse me, Danved are back! Having Callil back is nice - she came in so late that I didn't really have an opportunity to actually use her in PoR, so maybe this game will be able to rectify that. But. . . not counting on that. Largo, I already know he's not actually playable this time around, which. . . odd. I mean, I haven't actually used him in PoR, but still odd. Devdanved. . . so is it actually ever going to be explained why he's pretending to be someone else. . .? And has he always been talking about himself in third person? I didn't actually use him in PoR either, so once again, I have no idea. Stella. . . why did they have to attach you to Makalov of all people.
Elincia giving Geoffrey a lance, except she's taking it away except not really. Not much for me to add there.
C'mon Geoffrey, let Kieran hang up his axe on the mantel! He knows what to do with it.
But also, such a shame that Kieran and Oscar got seperated.
The gameplay here was a bit all over the place. A whole bunch of ally units, enemies that for the most part felt like fodder (which I guess makes sense in terms of story), and the challenge of having my allies not take up any space. I'm surprised at just how tanky Danved was, though.
The beacons are lit! Geoffrey calls for aid! . . .Well, not quite. He's just warning. But huh, didn't expect them to pull in Haar like this again.
And Lucia's getting captured. Feels like an odd story beat, honestly. I suppose there's a whole lot context I'm still missing?
