Fear of the Monster is Really a Kind of Desire

Desire. A strong feeing of wanting to have something or wishing something to happen. How does a monster tie in with desire you may ask, Or, you may even know. They say curiosity kills the cat or at least scared it. So, Have been that cat before? Fear of the monster is really a kind of desire in The "yellow wallpaper" written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman as we see the women slowly dig into madness. The wallpaper symbolizing a monstrous entity in which she becomes confined and controlled. In, "The Husband Stich" written by Carmen Maria Machado desire becomes an act to control. While the wife and husband both are drawn to desires for one another and I think is safe to say both equally satisfied in the desire for one another, the husband is the monster in the story when he takes on too much control and d allows a procedure to be done to the wife after giving birth to their son.

In the yellow wallpaper, we come to know the wife as an ill woman who had recently gave birth. Her husband believed to want the best for her, confines her into a room where her "nervous condition could be be cured. Locked in this room with a strange yellow wallpaper she becomes obsessed and eventually see's herself in the need to get rid of this feeling of stagnancy. her madness drives her to believe the woman in the wallpaper must be freed. After ripping the wallpaper, she herself feels free. In the Husband stich, the husband like the husband in the yellow wallpaper finds desires in wanting to untie her ribbon to see what was under. This desire lead him to attempt multiple times the attempt to do so. The wife giving birth to a child as well, he controls her narrative by, stitching her up for his pleasure. As we see a resemblance of the need for control in both husbands over their wives.

"The yellow wallpaper and "The Husband Stitch" analyze Cohens thesis of , Fear of the Monster is really a Kind Of Desire by allowing symbolic instances of a monsters. Forcing readers to reevaluate cultural assumptions like Cohen's monsters challenge societal gender roles and bodily autonomy.

T H E Y E L L O W W A L L P A P E R

I wanted to look at the yellow wallpaper for this project as it is one of my favourite stories about isolation and madness.

The yellow wallpaper is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This piece of american literature from 1892 deals with the ideas of female hysteria, domestic life, society and many other subjects.

Since being wrote it has been reviewed and theorised thousands of times. It is particularly big deal in feminist culture. This being said it is also regarded as gothic horror.

This story follows a woman with a nervous disposition being treat by her husband. He takes her to a big mansion away from the village to get better air and puts her in the attic room. A room that was once a nusary, with bard windows and horrible ripped yellow wall paper.

At the start she hates the paper and begs her husband to redecorate or swap rooms but as time goes on and she becomes more isolated she begins to watch the pattern ‘move’. As her insanity grows you see a shift in the writing, she thinks that she is now a lot better and thinks those around her are plotting against her and that her husband is now falsely being loving and kind. She sits watching the paper and the woman she thinks is behind it, she sees this creeping woman out of every window and in the pattern. By the last few days of her being in the room she starts to refer to her self as the woman, starting by helping her remover the paper. By morning she had locked her self in to creep around the room before getting back into the pattern at night. When her husband finally gets into the room he is so shocked by the site of his wife creeping around that he faints.

I have decided to take some of my favourite parts and write them in my book as well as doing a piece or two that Is in response to this story

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

In 1892, the female unnamed narrator is diagnosed with “temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency” because she struggles with the confines of traditional womanhood and motherhood. As treatment, her male relatives confine her to a room and order her to avoid all forms of work, self-expression, and most human contact. Through her secret and illicit journal entries, we watch her descend into madness.
