Socotra. "Dragon" Island.
A small archipelago in the Indian Ocean, the main island of which is Socotra, belongs to Yemen and lies almost four hundred kilometers from the Arabian Peninsula. This remote place is known for its endemic plants; about a third of all Socotra plant species are found nowhere else on the planet. In 2008, the archipelago was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The most famous plant of the island, which has become its symbol, is the cinnabar dracaena. This evergreen tree has a unique and strange appearance of an inverted umbrella or a huge mushroom up to 10 m high with a green cap. Its dark red resin is called "dragon's blood" and is used in folk medicine and cosmetology. Rocky valleys, where hundreds of unusual trees stretch their branches upward, have become the calling card of the island.

The four types of dragon-like creatures known to the Greeks were the Dracones, Cetea, Chimaera and Dracaenae. The first of these occur in both myth and legend the word "legend" meaning the ancients believed such creatures inhabited the far corners of the earth in historical times.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF MYTHICAL DRAGONS
The first type of Greek dragon was the Dracon whose name was derived from the Greek words "drakein" and "derkomai" meaning "to see clearly" or "gaze sharply." It was essentially just a giant serpent which was sometimes equipped with rows of sharp teeth, deadly poison or multiple heads. In myth the beast usually guarded a sacred spring, grove or golden treasure. Our own word "dragon" derives from the creature's name.
COLCHIAN DRACON(Drakon Kholkikos) An unsleeping dragon which guarded the Golden Fleece in the sacred grove of Ares at Colchis. The creature was bewitched by Medea so that the hero Jason could steal its treasure.
CYCHREIDES (Kykhreides) A dragon which terrorized the island of Salamis. It driven out by the hero Cychreus and fled to Eleusis where it became an attendant of the goddess Demeter.
DEMETER'S DRACONES A pair of winged dragons which drew the chariot of goddess Demeter. She gave them to the hero Triptolemos to carry him across the world spreading knowledge of agriculture.
GIGANTOMACHIAN DRACON (Drakon Gigantomakhios) A dragon which was cast at the goddess Athena during the Giant War. She caught it up and threw it into the sky where it formed the constellation Draco.
HESPERIAN DRACON (Drakon Hesperios) A hundred-headed dragon which guarded the golden apples of the Hesperides. It was slain by Heracles when he came to fetch the treasure as one of his Twelve Labors.
HYDRA A nine headed water-dragon which guarded the springs of Lerna. It possessed the power of regeneration, producing two new heads for each that was decapitated. The creature was eventually destroyed by Heracles who cauterized its neck stumps with a flaming torch.
ISMENIAN DRACON (Drakon Ismenios) A dragon which guarded the sacred spring of Ares near Thebes. It was slain by the hero Cadmus who sowed its teeth in the earth to reap a crop of earth-born warriors.
MAEONIAN DRACON  (Drakon Maionios) A dragon which ravaged the kingdom of Lydia. It was slain by Heracles when he was in the service of Queen Omphale.
MAEONIAN DRACON ((Drakon Maionios) A monstrous dragon which terrorized the kingdom of Lydia. It was slain by the giant Damasen.
MEDEA'S DRACONES Two flying dragons born from the blood of the vanquished Titans. They were yoked to draw the chariot of the witch Medea.
NEMEAN DRACON (Drakon Nemeios) A giant dragon or serpent which guarded the sacred groves of Zeus at Nemea. It was destroyed by the warriors of the Seven Against Thebes after devouring the infant Opheltes, son of a local king.
OPHIOGENEAN DRACON(Drakon Ophiogeneikos) A dragon which guarded the sacred grove of the goddess Artemis in Mysia. It mated with the maiden Halia, producing a son named Ophiogeneis, ancestor of the Ophiogenes tribe.
PITANIAN DRACON (Drakon Pitanios) A dragon of Pitane in Aeolia (Asia Minor) which was turned to stone by the gods.
PYTHON A monstrous dragon which was set by Gaea to guard the oracle of Delphi. It was destroyed by the god Apollo when he seized the shrine.
RHODIAN DRACONES(Drakones Rhodioi) Giant serpents and dragons which ravaged the island of Rhodes. They were destroyed by the hero Phorbas.
THESPIAN DRACON (Drakon Thespiakos) A dragon which plagued the Boeotian town of Thespaie. It was slain by the hero Menestratus, who threw himself into the creatures maw wrapped in spiked armour.
TROJAN DRACONES (Drakones Troiades) A pair of dragons sent by the god Poseidon to destroy Laocoon of Troy and his sons when he attempted to warn his people of the threat posed by the Wooden Horse.
This is list of the creatures that stuck out the most to me and their stories where the most interesting however, I want to focus my attention most to the Ophiogenean Dracon as it was the dragon that was a guard of the goddess Artemis who relates to my concept and ideas because she is said to be the goddess of the hunt and this ties in with my dystopian concept. This dragon was not necessarily a very important dragon in greek history but it was the one that sparked the most ideas for me as he was a guard and a pet in some ways. Because it is not the significant there wasn’t really much to research on him but I really liked the idea of using a Dragon that was related to my chosen goddess to focus on.
The city Parion (Parium) is situated on the sea. Here is told the mythical story that the Ophiogeneis are similar to the serpent tribe and they say that the males of the Ophiogeneis cure snake-bitten people by continuous stroking, after the manner of enchanters, first transferring the livid colour to their own bodies and then stopping both the inflammation and the pain. According to the myth, the original founder of the tribe, a certain hero, changed from a serpent (ophis) into a man.
Halia (Sea Brine), the daughter of Sybaris, was entering a grove of Artemis, the grove was in Phrygia, when a divine Drakon (Dragon-Serpent) appeared to her and it was said to be of immense size and lay with her. And from this union sprang the Ophiogeneis (Snake-born) of the first generation.
Throughout Greek Mythology the idea of creatures being born from different gods and goddesses is a running thing that appears in lots of the myths and legends. I find this really interesting because it really shows the mythical side of the stories and its something thats completely impossible but people really believed in these myth and legends. Also sometimes its like from good comes evil and from evil comes good which relates completely to my idea of utopia and dystopia being linked in a way.

Improving Air Quality Indoors
Try changing your cleaning products to all natural, eco friendly, and or vegan products . It not only reduces the use of toxic chemicals but can reduce your chances of getting cancer and damaged skin due to chemical pollutants . Not all vegan products are eco friendly . Here are some products and brands that are safe to use :
- Aunt Fannies Glass and Window Vinegar Wash
- Truce Wood Cleaner
- Grove Collaborative
- Method Home
- Seventh Generation
- ECOS
- Skoy Eco-Friendly Cleaning Cloth
Add plants to the home. Certain plants oxygenate and filter pollutants more than others . Here are some plants that are easy to take care of and are stronger than most in cleansing the air:
- Dracaena ( Dragon Tree), know to purify air from the toxins: formaldehyde, benzene, carbon dioxide, and trichloroethylene.
- Cacti, know to tackle pollution, radiation, and cleanse bacteria. ( I love that radiation part . I have one in my room)
- Air Plants, one of the easiest plants to care for. Known to immensely decrease dust and increase humidity levels . ( I own 5. They are tiny)
- Snake Plant, one of the strongest plants to absorb excessive amounts of carbon monoxide. It emits oxygen and filters toxins from the air such as benzene, xylene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde.
Clean everything at least once a week. Most pollutants not only come from cleaning products but from out side as well. So vacuum( make sure it uses a HEPA filter for the best efficiency )your couch and floors, mop, clean that toilet ( every time you flush , particles of your business go into the air . That’s why I put down the toilet cover to reduce that. Also put a plant in there to clean those particles and don’t leave your tooth brush in the bathroom), and other things in order to reduce outside invaders inside the home.
Purchase an air filter. Make sure to buy one that uses a HEPA filter for the greatest efficacy. They are expensive and the tiny ones only purify a small area around that filter, which is why I’d prefer having an abundance of plants that are easy to care for . Most plants I care for die if they require daily attention.
Make sure your home has good ventilation. Having good ventilation is important in reducing the chances of you getting sick by sweeping all those extra pollutants, from those cleaning products, outside and into the atmosphere. Doesn’t sound pretty but your the one using those products so.... If the air quality outside is worse then inside then don’t bother opening a window . For the most part it’s only like that in big cities and industrial areas.

THE MAGICKAL POWER OF DRAGON’S BLOOD
Written by Algoth’s Grove
“As red as blood with the energetic signature of the wisdom of the ages… a true gift from Mother Earth!”
In magick and in medicine we find that Dragon’s Blood has been present since the beginning of grimoires and shamanic dances under the full moon. In Greece this blood red resin that stains absolutely everything it touches was held in high regard for its medicinal properties. From wound healing to chest pain and painful menstruation, Dragon’s Blood was commonly referred to as a heal all remedy.
“DRAGON’S BLOOD IS A BRIGHT RED RESIN THAT IS OBTAINED FROM DIFFERENT SPECIES OF A NUMBER OF DISTINCT PLANT GENERA: CROTON,DRACAENA, DAEMONOROPS,CALAMUSROTANG AND PTEROCARPUS. THE RED RESIN HAS BEEN IN CONTINUOUS USE SINCE ANCIENT TIMES AS VARNISH, MEDICINE, INCENSE, AND DYE.”
The problem with using today’s Dragon’s Blood for medicinal purposes is the fact that its true source must be verified. 90% of the time the Dragon’s Blood that you are buying comes from the Daemonorops and Dracaena species and because we cannot verify the actual source, its medicinal use carries a great speculation on the safety. Reputable sources are out there but one must be absolutely certain, asking for certification and proof of origin before buying the product is essential.
Another danger in using Dragon’s Blood resin is that it is an abortifacient. Getting it on your skin, whether it be the oil or the resin itself is not advised at all by expecting mothers or those wanting to fall pregnant. This fact is hardly ever published and often discarded to ensure sales.
In both Hoodoo and Voodoo, Dragon’s Blood is used extensively. Dragon’s Blood is excellent for making dyes with and writing down magickal incantations or inking in special parts of your grimoire. It holds a very powerful energetic signature and has throughout our history. Magickally, Dragon’s Blood carries with it the power of Mars, the passion and vitality of fire and as a masculine entity, Dragon’s Blood is excellent in empowering any spell. It is especially useful in intense banishing rituals but in the same breath it does wonders in love magick. By adding it to a protection oil and anointing the doors and windowsills of your home, you are ensured that no unwelcome spirits will enter.
Dragon’s Blood is an enabler and an empowering additive to everything in magick. It takes on the elements that you are working with and empowers them 10-fold. Like clear Crystal Quartz is a magnifier, so is Dragon’s Blood in the plant kingdom. A powerful Amulet is a Crystal Quartz pendant anointed with Dragon’s Blood oil and worn during spell work or ritual to enhance and empower the wearers experience. Dragon’s Blood is also excellent if you are thinking of astral travelling, create a sleepers amulet that you leave under your pillow or wear to bed. Use a piece of Mica and anoint with Dragon’s Bloodoil. It will protect and guide you through the astral.
Here is an excellent video on ‘How to make Dragon’s Blood ink for use in Grimoires or Spellwork.’
