From Desert to Knowledge: The Story of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library

During Dubai's "Year of Reading" in February 2016, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum revealed the idea for the library. The seven-story library, shaped like an open book on a lectern, will occupy 650,000 square feet of land and welcome 9 million people a year. More than 4.5 million physical, digital, and audio books will be kept in the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library building contract, worth AED 1 billion, is the biggest cultural project in Dubai.  Work is scheduled to start in September 2016 and be finished by the middle of 2018. The library's construction was 22% finished as of December 2017. It was 72% finished in 2018.

In 2019, the library was still under construction even though it was scheduled to open in 2018. The exterior was finished, the main structure was topped out, and the interior was nearing completion as of February 2020. On June 16, 2022, the library opened to the public. On June 23, 2022, it played home to a meeting of the Dubai Executive Council.

ഒരു Book Fair അപാരത

വായിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ബുക്ക് ഏകദേശം കഴിയാറായതിനാൽ, പുതിയ ഒരെണ്ണം വാങ്ങാം എന്ന് കരുതി Sharjah Expo Center-ൽ International Book Fair നു പോയി. ഓഫീസിൽ നിന്നും വരുന്ന വഴി ആയതു കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ നേരം ഇരുട്ടി തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു.

സാമാന്യം ന��്ല തിരുക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഞാൻ DC Books-ന്റെ Stall ലക്ഷ്യമാക്കി നടന്നു. രണ്ട് ഹാളുകളിൽ ആയി DCയ്ക്ക് തന്നെ അവിടെ അനേകം സ്റ്റാളുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. അതിൽ ഒരു സ്റ്റാളിന്റെ മൂലയ്ക്ക് DCയുടെ badge കഴുത്തിലിട്ടു ഒരു പയ്യൻസ് ഇരിപ്പുണ്ട്. Book Festനു വേണ്ടി മാത്രം DC പ്രത്യേകം hire ചെയ്ത അനേകം ചെറുപ്പക്കാരിൽ ഒരുവനാണ്. ഒറ്റ നോട്ടത്തിൽ ഞാൻ അന്വേഷിച്ചു വന്ന ബുക്ക് കാണാത്തത് കൊണ്ട് അതിവിടെയുണ്ടോ എന്ന് അവനോട് തന്നെ ചോദിക്കാം എന്ന് കരുതി. ഏതോ ഒരു ബുക്ക് മറിച്ചു നോക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന അവന്റെ അടുത്ത് വന്നു ഞാൻ മെല്ലെ ചോദിച്ചു.

"The Selfish Gene ഉണ്ടോ"?

തല ഉയർത്തി എന്നെ ഒന്ന് നോക്കിയിട്ടു ലവൻ.

"ഇല്ല"

ഞാൻ ഒന്ന് അമ്പരന്നു. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് പുസ്തകങ്ങളുള്ള DCയുടെ സ്റ്റാളിൽ ഒരു particular book ഉണ്ടോ എന്ന ചോദ്യത്തിന് ഇത്ര confident ആയി ഇല്ല എന്ന് പറയണമെങ്കിൽ അവിടെയുള്ള അത്രയും പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ പേരുകൾ അവനു മനഃപാഠമായിരിക്കണം. (Which is nearly impossible) അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവിടെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ inquiry വന്ന പുസ്തകം അതായിരിക്കണം. അങ്ങനെയാകുമ്പോൾ stock out ആയാൽ ഓർത്തുവയ്ക്കുവാൻ എളുപ്പമാണ്. എന്നാൽ, ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ച book ആകട്ടെ, അങ്ങനെ എല്ലാവരും അന്വേഷിച്ചു വരാൻ സാധ്യതയുള്ള ഒന്നല്ല താനും.

പ്രതീക്ഷ കൈവിടാതെ ഞാൻ അവനോടു അതെഴുതിയ ആളിന്റെ പേര് പറഞ്ഞു. (ചിലപ്പോ ബിരിയാണി കിട്ടിയാലോ)

ജനിച്ചതിൽ പിന്നെ അങ്ങനെ ഒരാളുടെ പേര് കേട്ടിട്ടേ ഇല്ല എന്നത് പോലെയുള്ള ഒരു expression മുഖത്ത് വാരി വിതറിയിട്ടു വീണ്ടും അതേ confidence ഓട് കൂടി അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു, "ഇല്ല ചേട്ടാ"..

"ശേയ്‌.. ഇവനെന്താണ് ഇങ്ങനെ" എന്ന് മനസ്സിൽ ആലോചിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് നിന്നപ്പോൾ അതേ സ്റ്റാളിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു മൂലയ്ക്ക് നല്ല പ്രായമുള്ള മറ്റൊരു staff കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിൽ എന്തോ type ചെയ്യ്തു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടു. ആള് DCയുടെ ദുബായ് ബ്രാഞ്ചിലെ official staff ആണ്. നേരത്തെ തന്നെ ഞങ്ങൾ പരിചയപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. കുറെ നാളുകൾക്ക് ശേഷം കാണുകയാണെങ്കിലും പെട്ടന്ന് തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹം എന്നെ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു. കുശലാന്വേഷണങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് ഞാൻ തേടി വന്ന ആ പുസ്തകം അവിടെയുണ്ടോ എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചു.

ചെറുതായി ഒന്ന് നെറ്റി ചുളിച്ചു, ആ ബുക്കിന്റെ പേര് ചെറുതായി ഉരുവിട്ട് കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ ലാപ്ടോപ്പിലെ stock list എടുത്തു ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ച ബുക്കിന്റെ പേര് type ചെയ്തു. നോക്കിയപ്പോൾ മലയാ�� പരിഭാഷയുണ്ട്. Science book ആയതിനാൽ English തന്നെയാണ് നല്ലതെന്നു തോന്നി അത് വേണ്ടെന്നു വച്ചു.

"Authorന്റെ പേരൊന്നു പറയാമോ" അദ്ദേഹം ചോദിച്ചു. ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുത്തു. അത് കേട്ട മാത്രയിൽ തന്നെ പുള്ളി എന്നെയൊന്നു നോക്കി. പിന്നെ ആ പേര് type ചെയ്യാൻ നിന്നില്ല.

"മോനെ അതിവിടെ കിട്ടില്ല, ഇവിടെ banned ആണ്"

ആ author എഴുതിയ, വളരെ വളരെ പ്രശസ്തമായ മറ്റൊരു ബുക്ക് ഗൾഫ് രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ എവിടെയും കിട്ടില്ല എന്നെനിക്ക് അറിയാം. പക്ഷെ ഇത് science related ആയതിനാൽ ഇവിടെ കിട്ടുമെന്ന് കരുതി. ആമസോണിൽ ലഭ്യമാണെങ്കിലും നാട്ടിൽ ഉള്ളതിനേക്കാൾ മൂന്നിരട്ടിയാണ് വില. അദ്ദേഹത്തിനോട് നിരാശ കലർന്ന ഒരു ചെറുപുഞ്ചിരിയോടെ bye പറഞ്ഞു ഇറങ്ങി.

അവിടെ നിന്നും ഇറങ്ങുമ്പോൾ മനസ്സ് നിറയെ ആ പയ്യൻ ആയിരുന്നു. അവനും അവനെക്കാൾ പ്രായം കൊണ്ടും experience കൊണ്ടും ഒരുപാട് senior ആയ ആ മനുഷ്യനും പറഞ്ഞ മറുപടികൾ ഒന്ന് തന്നെ ആയിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും തങ്ങളുടെ പക്കൽ ആ book ഉണ്ടോയെന്ന് അന്വേഷിക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹം സന്നദ്ധത കാണിച്ചു. ഒരു sales man/woman-നു ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കേണ്ട ഏറ്റവും നല്ല qualitiesൽ ഒന്ന് ആ അന്വേഷണത്വരയാണ്.

അല്ല.. അവർക്കു മാത്രമല്ല, നമ്മൾ ഓരോരുത്തർക്കും..

പോക്കറ്റിൽ നിന്നും ഫോൺ എടുത്തു പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട സുഹൃത്തിനെ വിളിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് വീട്ടിലേക്കു നടന്നു തുടങ്ങി.
