Unlisted Fandom Challenge
Two days ago, at our last Unlisted Fandom Challenge update, we had a 3-way tie for first. Today? One of those fandoms has taken the lead AND a new fandom that hadn't had even a single signup before has jumped all the way into a 4-way tie for second. Your fandom could do the same, in the hours still left before signups close!
At present, our leaderboard looks like this:
7 Danny Phantom
5 Carmen Sandiego (2019) 5 For All Mankind 5 Tortall 5 Yu Yu Hakusho
4 Ace Attorney 4 Alan Wake/Remedyverse 4 Formula 1 RPF 4 Ted Lasso 4 The Goblin Emperor Series - Katherine Addison 4 The Stanley Parable
3 Greek Mythology/Religion 3 Buffyverse 3 Bungo Stray Dogs 3 Call of Duty 3 Detective Conan 3 Dragon Ball 3 HBO War 3 Kingdom Hearts 3 Persona Series: 3-5 3 Professional Wrestling 3 Realm of the Elderlings - Robin Hobb 3 Shades of Magic - V. E. Schwab 3 The Mummy films 1999-2008 3 Undertale
Given the way Carmen Sandiego came from *nowhere* to tie for 2nd place, a single signup really can shake things up! And for the next few hours, signups are STILL OPEN! Do the thing!
The rest of our unlisted write-in fandoms under the cut for length -

So, I saw a weird ask going around and thought - good idea, sad and pathetic execution. So, new tag game! Tell me what you're currently reading and watching as well as what's been your favorite books, films, and shows this year!
CURRENTLY WATCHING: I'm currently watching Make Some Noise, which has been fun to binge. Highly rec it if you or a kind friend has Dropout. Also watching Evil which is such a highly underrated show.
CURRENTLY READING: To be completely honest, I'm in a bit of a reading slump. I had my reading binge at the beginning of the year. Buuut I am at the very beginning of both The Legacy of Yangchen by F.C. Yee as well as Diamond Ring by KD Casey.
FAVORITE MOVIES AND SHOWS SO FAR THIS YEAR: Can't recommend Challengers enough. Truly, probably my favorite movie of the year so far? Twisters was really fun too. I know this came out last year, but I'm pretty sure I watched Bottoms this year and I can't recommend that enough either, it's so good. I think I also got around to watching Sense8 for the first time this year and wow I really missed out. That show fucking rocks. I watched House of the Dragon and while it was a slow build-up season, I'm excited to see what happens next? While the latest season of The Bear was a bit all over the place, I still loved it dearly. The latest season of The Dragon Prince was so good too. Also started watching RWBY for the first time (RIP Rooster Teeth).
FAVORITE BOOKS SO FAR THIS YEAR: Oooh I told y'all I had a reading binge at the beginning of the year. Most Ardently by Gabe Cole Novoa was great, as well as So Let Them Burn by Kamilah Cole, Escaping Mr. Rochester by L.L. McKinney, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: The Druid's Call by E.K. Johnston, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: The Road to Neverwinter by Jaleigh Johnson, The Bewitching Hour: A Tara Prequel by Ashley Poston, The Pomegranate Gate by Ariel Kaplan, and okay I'm cheating a bit but I read it in December last year, Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao. Also reread the most of Rick Riordon's demigod universe. All the Greek, Roman, and Norse demigod series in the universe, at least. I highly recommend The Trials of Apollo series as well as The Sun and The Star which is actually written by both Mark Oshiro and Rick Riordan (like the book somehow gets away with a MONTERO reference, how can you not love that?). The Magnus Chase books, while imperfect, hold a special place in my heart too.

I wanted to take a brief pause after VII, just to talk about hallmarks of Dragon Quest as a series. Because we are leaving the era where these games are a driving force in developing the JRPG genre. Like...I know when I do the final ranking I'm going to put II much higher than most. Because I earnestly feel II is one of those very special games that developed so many things that became ubiquitous you take it for granted. This does not mean VIII, IX, and XI are bad by any stretch. I'd compare it to The Simpsons; your purpose has changed in a world full of imitators. What was revolutionary is not comforting and timeless.
Sadly this does mean we'll lose a few elements that didn't translate into the next generation. Eventually the designers behind the series started following norms competitors innovated. So before we go on to VIII and it's massive legacy, a few favorite hallmarks I didn't get to cover:
One of the most iconic features here since the first that's just as fun in XI. Metal Slimes. So many have tried this and none work as well as the original. Rare version of a weak enemy that nets massive experience. The catch? They're quick to flee and while they have only 3-4 HP their defense is maxed out. Enough you might do 1 damage on a hit. Then later games introduce different, stronger varieties. If you need to grind, the metal slime family always feels like a fun little mini-game to shorten it. And the developers are smart about where their hotspots are usually. If you see one in a new area, it's worth it to try and bag a few first pass.
Dungeon Philosophy. I hate this has fallen by the wayside in favor of following Final Fantasy's style. Early on, you had to approach dungeons like an old school D&D module. You're not doing it first try. It's all part of the fun baked into what happens on a loss. You just go back to the last King/Priest you saved at and lose half your money. The dungeons are designed around this, if it's a tower you can just hop off and go back to town. But you'll have to make a few runs at the labyrinth to figure everything out and learn the optimal path. Especially with...
Random encounters having some teeth to them. This has diminished over time but game design in general has gotten easier so I don't fault DQ for it. But in those early ones, yeah random encounters can be brutal. You need to consider spells like sleep or fog that'll spare you some hits cheaply. If you flee and fail you lose a turn like a lot of RPGs but not every monster will go so it's more viable sometimes. All together, simple but tight design. A dungeon in early Dragon Quest feels like a real challenge of balancing resources like MP. This is why I love III so much, the class system plus peak design philosophy makes everything work so well as a total package. Your party comp will determine which parts are hard or easy.
Decisions on equipment. This is subtle but very cool in practice. Unlike a lot of JRPGs, in these early Dragon Quest games you're going to have to grind a lot to get every new piece of equipment you can buy immediately. Which will feel even worse if something is rendered obsolete with a dungeon treasure. You're not expected to. When you first get to town you decide what felt like it needed to be bolstered the most, then go on and start taking on the dungeon expecting to need a few trips. When you're ready to leave, decide if you want to polish it off here or try your luck with a headstart on the next town. Later games have replaced this with a crafting element I like, so it's more of a lateral move.

[Review] Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (PS5)
Tumblr media
They made Elden Ring 2 and called it a DLC.
Since playing Elden Ring (an instant classic of the dark fantasy hardcore action-RPG genre), my appreciation for it has only grown. I've watched countless lore videos and fun challenge runs that show just how deep it is, and comparing it to previous FromSoft games shows a level of polish that represents a peak for the whole meta-series. I still think the open world and material/crafting system are a bit much, but still. Great game. So I was excited to dive right into its expansion pack as soon as it dropped. A week and more than 50 hours of gameplay later and it's done; wow.
The new adventure is intended for endgame characters, so I took my completed game save in there. The difficulty does indeed continue to ramp from that point, but there's a new character scaling mechanic similar to Sekiro's memories/prayer beads, whereby you can buff your damage and defence by collecting new thingamajigs. There's also cool new weapons in there and they absolutely throw smithing stones at you. I kept my ultra-heavy greatshield but soon swapped out my Rotten Battle Hammer/Serpent Hunter/Straight Sword for the Milady, an example of the new Light Greatsword weapon class. It's got a great balance of reach, power, and speed, plus neat combo attacks where you can rapidly chain multi-hit heavy attacks into fast sweeping light attacks. Other new weapons have fun gimmicks and twists beyond what the base game encompassed, although you pretty much have to upgrade them to the max for them to be viable.
Tumblr media
The Land of Shadow is the new setting, a realm sealed off and teeming with bitter and twisted creatures abandoned by the outer world. The story has you following in the footsteps of the lost demigod Miquella, deciding the fates of his followers, and ultimately stopping his quest for godhood. Focusing on this one plotline with a small cast of characters makes for a strong story thread, although there's plenty of side distractions along the way that all flesh out the larger story of the Lands Between. I can't wait for further analysis of the details and connections here.
This shadow realm is an excellent setting, with some stunning new biomes, like the plains full of graves, the finger-sprouting wastelands, or the stormy mountain dominated by dragons. What I most appreciate about this new zone is its density, a tightly overlapping landscape with more memorable setpieces and crafted spaces by area than the base game's world. And this despite the new map being nearly half the size of the original map, which for a DLC is huge! There has clearly been some effort to bridge the gap between the open world bloat and copy-paste filler dungeons, and the intricately designed Legacy Dungeons, and I appreciated the balanced approach here.
Tumblr media
As always, the combat encounters are a big highlight, culminating in epic boss fights. There's a lot of variety in enemy design and much of it is brand new, with a lot of care in level design and such to ensure memorable fights. As for the bosses themselves, there's some super cool ideas and a lot of them! The base game has 15 major "remembrance" bosses, and this DLC adds a whole 10 new ones. There were many deaths in my playthrough but I'm proud to say I didn't struggle too much with most of them... until the final boss, which really, really makes you work for it. It's kind of nutty. Playing your cards right with the NPC sidequests lets you bring a couple of summon buddies into the final fight, and I really needed them. As per usual, this quest progression can be obscure and parts can be missed or skipped, so I made use of various guides along the way.
Shadow of the Erdtree complements the base game so well, filling out and expanding on aspects of it perfectly. I also think it improves on design decisions while adding some creative new sparks along the way. Taken on its own, it may be the strongest FromSoft "game" yet, and makes Elden Ring as a whole even better. So yeah, it's good. Now to watch countless more lore deep dives and challenge videos!

all the films I've seen so far in 2024 and my brief reviews of them:
ferrari: despite the appropriately thematic surname, adam driver felt weirdly miscast. sound design went hard though
bullet train: was an adequate film to keep visiting relatives interested
next goal wins: fumbled some of the characters. michael fassbender was great tho
poor things: good but book 100000x better. why take it out of glasgow and stop short of the actual revelatory ending?
godzilla minus one: truly excellent, no notes
rebel moon pt 1: truly awful, lots of notes. it wouldn't even be good as star wars fanfiction on wattpad. zack snyder owes me 134 mins of my life back
dungeons and dragons honour among thieves: so much fun!!
the zone of interest: very, very, very good
all of us strangers: great, but that ending soured me beyond belief
the holdovers: phenomenal cast, no misses. angus tully i will never forget you
dune part 2 (twice): talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, showstopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it
starship troopers: unironically amazing. michael ironside serves every time
tron: the graphics? groundbreaking for their time. everything else? eh
tron legacy: the music? fuck it up daft punk!! everything else? eh
sometimes I think about dying: beautiful, relatable, heartbreaking. deserves way more attention
civil war: too nihilistic and centrist for me, but it's very good. jesse plemons' scene nearly gave me a panic attack
challengers: way less raunchy than the hype made it out to be. very silly and fun. trent reznor never misses

Time for the next look Book. Robin was my Rogue in my DND Legacy Challenge. A bit of a kleptomanic, but at least they made soooo much money to take care of their family. (Note, if you download Robin, you might notice their pronouns are not They/Them. This is because the Dutch version of the game doesn't come with pronouns, sadly. :( My Genderfluid heart still cries about that... Lemme have my Die/Hen pronouns.) Dragon Quest XI Vs Dragon Quest III (1988).
AI Prompt: Dragon Quest XI Vs Dragon Quest III (1988).
Tumblr media
Comparing Dragon Quest XI (2017) to Dragon Quest III (1988) reveals several interesting contrasts and similarities in terms of gameplay, story, and overall design.
Gameplay and Battle Systems
Dragon Quest XI
Battle System: Dragon Quest XI uses the traditional turn-based combat system that the series is famous for, but with several modern upgrades. The game features both classic and 3D combat views, allowing the player to engage in battles in an open, three-dimensional space, though still adhering to turn-based mechanics. In this game, characters can move around in battle, making it feel more dynamic, and there are several tactical elements added, such as character positions and special abilities that affect the party's performance.
Exploration: The game has expansive 3D environments, featuring vast fields, towns, and dungeons. It offers freedom of movement within large, open-world environments, unlike earlier titles in the series. Dragon Quest XI also allows you to explore towns and cities in greater detail with a first-person perspective when talking to NPCs.
Dragon Quest III (1988)
Battle System: Dragon Quest III also features the classic turn-based combat system, but it was the game that introduced many of the foundational elements that became the hallmark of the series. The party system lets the player assemble a team of four characters, each with different roles. This was a significant evolution from previous entries, which mostly featured a fixed party. Combat is simpler, with a focus on the basic attacks, spells, and commands available to the party.
Exploration: Dragon Quest III features an overworld map that is much smaller compared to modern RPGs but vast for its time. The player moves from town to town, dungeon to dungeon, and can explore areas on foot or by ship. Dungeons and towns are more abstract compared to modern RPGs, with a more basic 2D view for exploration.
Story and Narrative
Dragon Quest XI
Story: Dragon Quest XI follows the journey of the Luminary, a young man who learns that he is the reincarnation of a legendary hero destined to save the world. The game’s narrative focuses on the hero’s journey, with themes of fate, friendship, and self-discovery. Along the way, the protagonist gathers a group of companions to help defeat an ancient evil threatening the world. The plot is rich and complex, with twists and turns and a focus on the individual stories of each party member.
Themes: The game explores destiny, heroism, and the battle between good and evil. It also dives into personal growth, with each character overcoming challenges related to their past and their own goals. There’s a significant emphasis on the bonds of friendship and the legacy of the hero.
Dragon Quest III
Story: Dragon Quest III also follows the journey of a young hero, but this time, the protagonist is the son (or daughter) of the hero from the first game. The game takes place in a world where an ancient evil, Zoma, threatens to destroy the land. The player’s goal is to assemble a party and defeat this evil. The story is more straightforward than that of Dragon Quest XI, focusing on the adventure itself and the gathering of allies.
Themes: Much like other early RPGs, Dragon Quest III focuses on good vs. evil, with a growing sense of responsibility for the hero. However, there is also a theme of family legacy as the hero’s lineage plays a pivotal role. The game also has a twist towards the end that redefines the hero’s journey in a unique way.
Visuals and Art Style
Dragon Quest XI
Visuals: Dragon Quest XI has a stunning 3D world with beautifully designed environments and characters. The art style is heavily inspired by Akira Toriyama’s iconic design work (best known for Dragon Ball), giving the game a colorful, cartoonish look while maintaining a sense of epic scale. The game’s visual style blends traditional anime influences with modern graphical capabilities, creating a world that feels both nostalgic and contemporary.
Art Style: The art style emphasizes vibrant, whimsical character designs, beautiful landscapes, and highly detailed towns. The environments feel alive and full of character, contributing to the overall charm of the game.
Dragon Quest III
Visuals: Dragon Quest III, being a 16-bit game on the NES, uses 2D sprites for characters and enemies. The world is seen from a top-down perspective, and the environments are relatively simple, with basic graphics compared to modern games. Despite this, the designs are still memorable, and the overworld map feels expansive and vast.
Art Style: The art style is also heavily influenced by Akira Toriyama, though much simpler due to the hardware limitations. The character sprites are charming, and the world has a classic fantasy look, with traditional RPG tropes like castles, forests, and dungeons.
Legacy and Influence
Dragon Quest XI
Legacy: Dragon Quest XI is the most recent entry in the mainline series and a celebrated modern RPG. It combines classic turn-based combat with modern elements like 3D exploration, voice acting, and a more intricate, emotionally rich story. It is seen as a return to form for the series while maintaining a connection to the classic Dragon Quest formula. It also pays tribute to the franchise’s history with references to past entries and an overall celebratory tone.
Dragon Quest III
Legacy: Dragon Quest III is often regarded as one of the greatest JRPGs of all time. It was the first game in the series to offer party customization, the class-change system, and a more expansive world. These innovations helped define the franchise's future. It is a landmark title for Dragon Quest, and its legacy can be seen in many games that followed, including future Dragon Quest titles and RPGs that incorporate class systems and open-world elements.
Overall Differences and Conclusion
Dragon Quest XI is a modern RPG with an open world, stunning 3D visuals, and a complex, character-driven story. It improves upon the classic formula with modern gameplay mechanics while still staying true to the series' roots.
Dragon Quest III, while being a classic 2D RPG, is groundbreaking for its time, introducing party customization, class changes, and a world-spanning adventure that heavily influenced future RPGs.
Both games share many of the same core elements but differ greatly in terms of technological advancements, story complexity, and world design. Dragon Quest III is a fundamental classic that laid the groundwork for many RPG conventions, while Dragon Quest XI is the pinnacle of modern JRPG design, offering a polished and expansive experience that honors its predecessors.

In the gaming world’s buzzing heart, a lively debate unfolds around “Dragon’s Dogma 2” – a world filled with breathtaking landscapes and shadowy dungeons. As gamers gear up, swords in hand and magic at their fingertips, a big question arises: Should all the rich content this game promises be part of the initial buy-in, or should it sneak up in additional purchases down the line?
The Adventure Kicks Off
Our story begins in Gransys, the vibrant setting of “Dragon’s Dogma 2.” Building on its predecessor, this sequel isn’t just about confronting dragons and exploring the unknown; it’s an invitation to embark on a journey that stretches the limits of imagination and gaming skills. Yet, there’s a bit of a cloud looming – the trend of slicing games into paid chunks threatens to cast a shadow over the excitement for this much-loved series.
A World of Differences
The Call to Adventure
“Dragon’s Dogma 2” unfolds a world rich in detail and mystery, where players aren’t just passing through. They’re carving out their legacy, with every choice and action sculpting the world around them. With its deep gameplay mechanics and compelling narrative, the game is a blank canvas for epic tales.
The Cost of Discovery
Conversely, the move toward paid extras divides the game into segments, holding back essential experiences that, some argue, should be part of the primary purchase. This growing trend in gaming sparks debates over value and access – where do we draw the line between enhancing a game and breaking it apart?
At a Crossroads
The gaming community finds itself at a fork in the road, torn between nostalgia for complete gaming experiences and the modern view of paid content as a lifeline for games post-launch. Some players long for the days when buying a game meant unlocking every adventure it held within. Others argue that paid content keeps the game evolving and supports the developers after the initial release.
Striking a Balance
At the heart of this discussion is the challenge of striking a fair balance that respects both the developers’ hard work and the gamers’ investments. Dragon’s Dogma 2 stands as a battleground for this debate, its richly imagined world highlighting both gaming’s incredible potential and the industry’s current dilemmas.
In Conclusion: On the Quest for Equilibrium
As “Dragon’s Dogma 2” makes its debut, it carries with it the collective hopes and worries of its fanbase. The dilemma over paid content prompts us to examine what we truly value in our gaming experiences. Will we lean towards a more inclusive and complete world, or does the future hold more behind-the-scenes adventures, only accessible at a price?
