WELL in my desperation I checked the entire mello/near tag in ao3 and since @tefuna politely asked I decided to do a list of fic recs, because I stumbled upon many that I dont want to forget. All under the cut, to keep things clean and nice

Beyond the heart's fallacy by galaxycm - is a great character study for mello, the one I always knew I needed and the author DELIVERED. It reflects and explains mello’s feelings in a clear and understandable manner, I found myself nodding while I was reading it. 

Waiting by sobrecogimiento - my absolute favourite. A masterpiece, the characterization is excellent, the dialogues interesting, the pacing brilliantly executed. Its intriguing, deep, funny and charming all at the same time and love how the flashbacks interlocate in the narrative. It does not fear to be ruthless and doesn’t waste much time sugarcoating things, which is exactly the way I enjoy these things. Ugh i just love it so much I LAUGHED LOUD at the equations part. 10000/10 (btw i know its tagged as mature but there wasn’t anything explicit in it so i thought it was ok to list as sfw)

Body language by SayHiDestery- Usually I don’t read fluff, but this one? nice. Super nice, it’s calm and warm and the characterization is good. Fluffyness between these two is rather difficult to manage but the author did a good job

Darkness by occludes - I love the melancholic tone in this one, and as someone who has nightmares often, this one strikes a cord

In Difference by tierfal - incredible near study, I love how the author describes the way he experiences the world through the analogy of hunger. fantastic wrtting

One Thousand Paper Cranes by  TangentQueenOfDragons - near's descent into madness takes the shape of origami and it killed me and my whole family (really sad but beautiful)

Proximity tells  by madamerosencrantz. Another masterpiece, the writing is so smart in this one and the dialogue between mello and near comes so natural and at the same time so difficult to follow, but not because of a deficit in writting but the opposite: the characterization is so on point it follows the characters's core complexity and mixed feelings. I loved it. 

How to shoot someone who outdrew you by ellief - A FAVE. near counterattacking is something i needed so much.

Sidetracked by tierfal - I LAUGHED. Also the way this author writes mello???? GOOD. We need more funny fics

Nights by youremyqueen - a masterpiece very well known by the fandom but since I’m a baby death note it was all new for me. This fic made beyond birthday my third fave after mello and honestly it just gets better and better every chapter. There's lawlight being an intriguing and ongoing disaster, kira shenanigans, paranormal activity and a lot of exploration of the shinigami world, all stories going around simultaneously. AND beyond birthday being himself. The quality of the writing and pacing is phenomenal, BUT be wary of darker themes (just be sure to read the tags). It’s probably the best fic I’ve ever read and I could say many things about it but for the sake of order and sanity I’ll keep it short and sweet.

I also really really love this short fic about Light and his dad  - I think Soichiro is an interesting character with a very unfortunate role that’s worth of exploration and that’s what this piece does!

That’s all I got for now, but this list is in no way done, there’s so much content for me to explore and cry about so I may edit this in the future. Anyone is invited to rec me fics too, if you wanted :^)

Like i think she would be instinctively kind of averse to generally associating herself with them at first because of the deep pressure to be [a safely marketable version of] bright but at the same time she, as a thoughtform with no family or friends of her own, inevitably ends up being lonely and unsure of her place in the world. and for all the complicated emotions the brights have and all their complicated feelings towards the elliefication they do have a very strong sense of family and they do end up deciding to let her in as ellie, even before they realize bright is still in there

(guy who only thinks about the bright family voice) Omg can you imagine ellie shaw being brought into the family as brights headmate though 😭🥺

hey I really admire your art skill+style ¥v¥ and sorry if you've already done this but do u have any Meronia fic recs? I recently fell in love with the ship and am planning on writing my first fic evEr for them but I can't get enuff of reading them either!!

strange bedfellows and puzzles and darts by raven ehtar are beautifully poetic with flowery prose, two different looks at the relationship between the two of them. night blooming by sisyphean effort is similarly gorgeous, also another look at their relationship. all three highly recommended

jenwryn’s writing is stellar if you’re looking for purely canon-disowning shoot-the-breeze fluff: a certain hush (nsfw), stripped (nsfw), and an understanding are pretty gooey and lovey-dovey, plus blur if you’re looking for a little something else (fem!nsfw).

one of my all-time favourite meronia fics, also found on jenwryn’s profile, is one-minute world. gorgeous poetic writing style, beautiful metaphors. it’s not happy, but definitely a must-read of this ship imo.

we will be better than i was by sxldato is, i feel, another must read. it’s a longish one but tbh if you want a frame of reference for good dialogue and characters that seem real and have trains of thought and complicated pasts and awkward relationships this author is one to go to. they’re rad af and this fic is raw and honest in a good way. not a fix it tho

liar liar is…. something i’d only suggest you read if i wanted you to feel all sorts of pain and anguish abt these two (and i am suggesting it. cuz i do. mwuahaha). it’s rlLY FRICKI N SAD but also right up your alley if you’re here for manipulation and unfulfilled desires and complicated human relationships.

landscape after cruelty is a bRILLIANT serial killer!au by @wxmmyshouse that although being only four chapters long (so far?) is well worth reading. idk if it’s going to be updating any time soon but what’s there is quality stuff, brilliant descriptions and chilling graphics. silhouettes, also by this author, is another sAD one, but again with wonderful sharp writing.

all washed up by tierfal is sweet au-ish business. their writing is sharp, clean and knows what it’s talking about, which to me is very appealing (this fic in particular reminds me of my visit to madison lmao, the heat outside of chicago airport was unbearable. you poor american folks are suffering)

mosquito bites by psuedorabbit i forgOT ABOUT THIS FICS EXISTENCE OMG this one is another fave it’s v au-ish, v fluffy, and very shitty-summer-crush aesthetic idk how else to word that. packed with sweet descriptions and confused feelings

like a river flows surely into the sea by veeraha is another goldie, featuring more incredible writing and DFAB near (one of my fave headcanons woop), plus cosy coffee shop scenes and lovely imagery

the switch by ellief is a freaky-friday au which is 10/10 recommended if you’re just looking for some fun and well-written crack

i’m not sure if i’ll be your fighter and you’ll be my mirror by shrink is still updating but here’s to hoping it is, cuz it’s brill and punchy and full of potential

presents by twyd isn’t the most shippy fic out there but still an interesting account of what their relationship at wammy’s would be like. very unique style

aaand to round this off with @lawlietsjustice‘s fic the mihael factor, definitely my fave au fic to date. it’s long but well worth the read, with hilarious banter, plenty of fluff and nice slow-burn relationship evolvement. also worth the read by this author are secret santa , give me my drink! , and TMF’s christmas special
