Kill Switch: Part Fifteen

That’s when the realization hit him. She couldn’t glitch. They were alone, and she couldn’t glitch away. If she hadn’t been such a blatant fool, getting rid of her beacon detonator, he wouldn’t have thought twice about it. But she did get rid of her detonator. And now, he has been presented with an opportunity. One that, in all honesty, he didn’t want to think about. He wished it had never crossed his mind. But now that it had, the thought was quick to fester, to burrow its wretched way deeper into his head until he had no choice but to consider it. It was only when he realized how apprehensively Vanellope had been staring back at him that he came somewhat back to his senses. Had she seen the brief moment of contemplation that plagued his eyes? He certainly hoped not... Squashing those thoughts down as best that he could, he started to move towards the injured child. But, despite all her efforts, not even she could hide the glimmer of fear that’d passed through her gaze the second he stepped closer. That sight alone stopped him dead in his tracks. It was so brief, so fleeting, that Candy was sure it hadn’t even been a conscious thought on her part. But it was there, and he had seen it.  That was the reality. It always had been, hadn’t it? That was the simple truth she kept refusing to accept. They weren’t friends. They had never truly been friends. This had been transactional. Nothing more, nothing less. He always knew that, despite how much Vanellope tried to pretend it was anything else. He was nothing more to these people than a tool they could barely control, and they were nothing more to him than means to an end. This was it. His chance to escape from this whole charade, served up on a silver platter. If he were the one to take her glitching abilities for himself, the scales would tip drastically in his favour. Sinistar would hardly be a concern anymore. Vanellope’s idiotic family would never know what hit them. He would be a fool not to seize such a golden opportunity.  So why was he hesitating?

You're a fantastic artist .. a fantastic role player .. a fantastic writer .. and just a fantastic person, in general.

Seeing your icon or art pop up on my feed always brings a smile to my face no matter what kind of day I've been having.

I know how you've said that you don't really like showing off the art that you've done back then because you feel they're cringey or ugly .. But believe me when I say that they are anything but that.

Yes, your art has improved immensely ... But I still find all your old art beautiful and enjoyable, as well. Even you're bloody, creepy king candybug ones. One of which I still have saved in one of my files from one of our first role plays.

You've always been so super sweet and have been such a good friend for a long time .. And even though we had not spoken for a while, I still consider you my friend very much so.

Seeing all these new interactions and new art has inspired me to do some drawing like I've done for you and a few other mutuals in the past.

I personally can not wait to see your art skills continue to grow and looking forward to plenty more writing together :)

Kill Switch: Part Sixteen

She took a deep breath in a poor attempt to steel her nerves, and walked inside the dungeon. Every step was a struggle, a fight to keep herself from trembling, to not show a single shred of weakness in his presence. She moved as quietly as she could, keeping her eyes locked on the motionless Cy-bug lying in the shadows. Whether or not he’d heard her come in, she couldn’t tell. His back had been turned, and she could see his body rise and fall with each breath he took. Perhaps he’d been too focused on recovering from his electrocuting escape attempts to truly notice her. Vanellope took another deep breath. Then spoke in as composed of a voice as she could muster. “So. Back to square one, huh?” It had been a long time since her voice had stirred such a malevolent beast inside of him. The vicious, feral snarl she’d gotten in response was rich with familiar elements of that carnivorous and mechanical discord she knew all too well. She had to fight to hide it, the way that noise brought her back to being helplessly cornered by a swarm of Cy-bugs at Sugar Rush’s exit. The way they shrilled and gnashed their fangs as they approached, bringing the threat of permanent death along with them. The way Sinistar kept forcing her back into that very same traumatizing position over and over again. She had hoped she’d never have to feel like that again. Especially not with Turbo. But, in all honesty, what right did she have to be surprised that he would be the one to rip away that hope? “Glitch.” Turbo spat the word out like a vile curse. The growling creature arose from where he laid, shadows twisting across his form as he paced back and forth alongside the bars of his prison, with glowing yellow eyes locked onto Vanellope all the while. “Come along to gloat now, have you?”

Kill Switch: Part Fourteen

Rather than the escalating anger she had expected, the Cy-bug instead let out a surprised laugh. As if the implication itself was completely absurd. When her own worried expression hadn’t changed, King Candy sent back a blank stare. “... That was a serious question?” He finally sputtered in response, appearing completely baffled. “Why in the world would you ask such a ridiculous thing?” “It’s a simple ‘yes or no’, Candy.” There it was again. That brief flash of annoyance that’d cross his features before he hid it behind a relaxed, slightly-amused guise. “Of course not. Don’t be silly.” He chuckled, giving a light couple of pats to her head with the tips of his claws. “I don’t know what on earth led you to such a conclusion, but clearly you’ve been imagining problems where there are none. Don’t dwell on such ludicrous things.” His front might’ve been more convincing to her if Vanellope didn’t already know him to be a bold-faced liar. The patronizing way in which he took complete disregard of her concerns, as though she were simply making things up, almost made her want to yell at him, to demand an explanation for why he’s secretly dipping into their stash of heal kits all of a sudden, to ask if he really thought she was so stupid as to buy his blatant lying right to her face… … But then she’d see it once more. Something dark and angry slipping through his mask, and it gave her one very clear warning. Don’t you dare ask again. So, she held her tongue, not knowing how to press the issue without making everything worse.

Kill Switch: Part Thirteen

“What, no witty comeback?” Ralph gauged, an awkward chuckle escaping him. “You sick or something?” “No, Ralph.” That lackluster response had Ralph raising an eyebrow. How only those two words could convey such blatant lethargy, he had no idea. He cast a confused look Vanellope’s way, but her worried gaze had remained on the Cy-bug.  Regardless of how strange it felt, that nagging pressure to liven up Turbo of all people, it would feel even stranger to leave him like that when Vanellope was so obviously bothered by it. Clearing his throat, Ralph tried again to elicit any sort of response that wasn’t so painfully lifeless. “No, see, that’s where you’re supposed to say something like, ��Sick of you, maybe’ or ‘What can I say, seeing your face is vomit-inducing’, or–” He stopped talking when King Candy stood up, not even bothering to look at either of them, and left the room without another word. “... What’s up with him?” Ralph asked Vanellope, all she was able to offer being an unknowing shrug in response.  “Said he was tired.” She replied, though sounded beyond unconvinced. “Maybe he just wants to be alone for a bit…”

Kill Switch: Part Eleven

“Watcha said about Sinistar– How couldja say somethin’ like that?!” She ranted on, tears welling up in her eyes, “You know h-how scared I’ve–” The more she tried to talk, the more choked up she got, and she had to cut herself off to stop from full-on crying. Instead, she turned away from him, indignantly wiping at her face with her sleeves. Whether she’d been hiding her face out of anger, or simply embarrassment to be crying in the first place, he couldn’t quite tell. If anything, King Candy was mostly just baffled that she was this upset over what was, to him, something so trivial. To him, it had been nothing more than an impulsive comment made in irritation. It hadn’t meant anything. … But, to her, he had just dangled the possibility of throwing her safety away on a petty whim. As annoyed as he was at how seriously she was taking such an offhand remark of his, could he really be surprised that a stupid child would be so overdramatic about such things? He took in a shallow breath, careful not to let his annoyance show in the sigh that soon followed. “I didn’t mean it, glitch.” Vanellope still wouldn’t look at him, the smallest hint of anger in her voice when she muttered “Then why’d you say it?” That question had him hesitating to respond truthfully, for the answer was as simple as it was cruel.  He wanted to hurt Felix. In that moment, all he could think about was hurting Felix.  Unfortunately for King Candy, Vanellope had been caught in that vitriolic crossfire the second she had tried to defend his actual target. For that crime, did she not deserve to face some of his ire? If she had just minded her own business, this wouldn’t be a problem… but, ‘minding her business’ wasn’t in her nature. Nor would she take very kindly to his less-than-amicable reasoning, he was sure. “... I don’t know.” He chose to say instead. “But I didn’t mean it.”
