MK sacrificing himself to the Pillar of Heaven was probably the most selfish thing he's done in the show; it's the first time he disregarded how his family felt for personal purposes /j

But actually, I like to think that "are you willing to give up everything you are" didn't just mean his life, but also who he is as a person. So, MK doesn't stop at separating himself from the Harbinger. He also separates "MK" and "the Monkie Kid."

The same way Macaque and Wukong sees themselves as weapons, it seems like MK sees himself as a shield. He sometimes acts like his self-worth is based on ensuring the safety of others at all costs, including his own well-being or trust.

Whenever he refers to himself as "MK" he normally mentions being a noodle delivery boy or something about his life before he picked up the staff. He calls himself "the Monkie Kid" before, after, or during a heroic deed in which he saves the city, the world, or his friends.

I headcanon that this is also why MK was stunned when Subodhi pointed out that "MK" is an abbreviation for "Monkey Kid." Cause too him Monkie Kid and MK aren't the same person.

The Monkie Kid is the hero who saved the world thrice, while MK is the ordinary human in his day-to-day life. So, as he starts to align himself more and more with the Monkie Kid and less with MK, he gets more self-sacrificial because he doesn't see himself as a person when he has to be the hero.

The Monkie Kid has to put his emotions aside when serving his purpose because he can't make a mistake when saving the world. But MK, the human noodle delivery boy, can, because he's existed before picking up the staff.

The Monkie Kid is the hero whose sole job is to keep the world safe, because that's just what a hero needs to do. MK is the human who can break down later.

He doesn't even draw for fun anymore; we mainly see him drawing on quests when he's making a plan to save something. /j

It's almost like Nuwa's point about MK being created to sacrifice himself for the sake of the world has always played a part in who he is. From his mental and physical health, to his free time, MK is almost always sacrificing something for the sake of someone else. And in most cases, the world.

Which is also why I personally can't see the Harbinger as a villain either. We mostly see the Harbinger characterized through MK's pov, which is a scary demon who's singular reason for existing is to cause chaos.

But to the Harbinger that's just who he is, it's who he's been over millennia of cycles. He's always served his purpose dutifully and MK is the only lifetime where there was a difference.

So, MK's character revolves around purpose and the inevitable sacrifices needed to fulfill it. Then, like, what would happen if the Lady Bone Demon was right, what if "chaos is your whole purpose. It's the reason you remain." was literal? What if MK, the Monkie Kid, and the Harbinger just stopped existing once their purpose was fulfilled?

It's like there would be nothing left but the broken pieces of who he is fighting for their place in one life.

The Monkie Kid has the classic hero conundrum of sacrificing/disregarding someone to save the world. ( I'm looking you, Spider Queen, Spider fellas, LBD, and Azure. /j ).

The Harbinger is willing to sacrifice the world to save the people of the cycle and fulfill his purpose.

MK is willing to sacrifice himself to save both the world and the people.

All three of them are selfish in the way of sacrificing a lot to serve their purpose, but what they would sacrifice is different in a way.

I just find MK issues with his identity to be very funky and filled with headcanons and somehow an AU was born. Anti-hero MK who has to learn how to balance being human and being a hero go brrr

Nüwa, Fuxi, and their Harbingers

Addition to this previous Au/theory about MK's connection to Nüwa and her mate Fuxi.

The Harbinger of Chaos was fated to herald the time when Nüwa's repairs on the Fifth Heavenly Pillar weakened - thusly ending the world.

Nüwa tried for a long long time to prevent the Pillar from weakening - suffering through an innumerable number of Cycles failing at every route.

At the end of each Cycle, a divine chaotic soul needed to willingly offer itself to the Pillar to repair it - a role usually fulfilled by a certain Monkey King or newly hatched soul. But it wasn't a perfect fix. It still lead to the world repeating back to when Nüwa was about to seal herself inside the Pillar to strengthen it.

Until the Cycle just before canon - when Nüwa's mate Fuxi discovered what exactly her Herald was. An unborn child. Furious at his wife for sacrificing even a single innocent soul to the Pillar, Fuxi pushed the intended sacrifice aside and walked into the Pillar himself.

Nüwa sat within the Pillar despairing at her mate's action. She became colder in those centuries, believing that now even her own beloved had rejected her.

But...

For the first time in all the cycles; Fuxi retained memory of the previous timeline.

He immediately makes towards Flower Fruit Mountain, where he knows a Stone Monkey is to be born into a lonely world.

Little Shihou always thought "Elder Shitougushi" was an odd fellow. He was a lot bigger than all the other monkeys, and super old. The elderly teacher rearing the orphaned monkey as his own the moment his tiny yellow limbs broke through his stone shell.

The Elder watched as Shihou became the Matriarch/King of the troop when he was still but a lad. Proudly watching over the troop as they were protected from danger inside the Stone Palace.

But the old monkey knew that he forces of the Underworld would be seeking him out. He was not meant to live as long as he had - only through eating a special fruit his mate had snuck him many eons ago as a sign of friendship.

So before he forced himself into a spiritual hibernation; The Elder told his Little Stone Monkey exactly what he truly was.

With what his mentor and parental figure taught him; Shihou embarked on a Journey to learn. Learn more about the big wide beautiful and terrifying Universe and what it had to offer odd stone-born monkeys like him.

As Fuxi rested in suspension, he dreamt of how much his wife would love the boy. He's not entirely sure if his guidance would change anything this time around, but he knew his Sun wouldn't let this world die quietly.

But he certainly did not anticipate his choices to indirectly cause the Harbinger to be born so early!

Xiangliu has seen many lifetimes, and seeing a version of Wukong who was so... burdened told him that something had changed in the formula. So he awoke the Harbinger as early as he could. Perhaps this new deviance is what he needed to be let back into the Chaos.

Nüwa always expects to see one of her creations at the end of the Cycle. But she had to stop herself from sobbing with frustration and joy at seeing the tiny little primate with her husband's wild chestnut hair before her.

And she chokes up knowing her elder creation had nearly beaten her younger in order to sacrifice himself in the boy's stead.

When MK refuses to let the world be reset back to factory settings, and with his power split the burden of the five coloured stones between all beings in the Three Realms; Nüwa can only smile nostalgically.

Her sons are more like their father than they ever knew.

I wanted to talk about this because it's been on my mind since I finished season 4

The way peaches represent Sun Wukong and Macaque's relationship. When they're happy in Flower Fruit Mountain, just the two of them — no brotherhood, no Jade Emperor (along with the entirety of Heaven), no journey to the West —, Sun Wukong gives Macaque a peach.

It doesn't look like much. SWK eats peaches all the time and his mountain is filled with them (seriously, is that all he eats? He really, really really loves peaches, man. How does he not get tired of them? I'd get grossed out after the first few months), of course he'd give one to his best friend! His most loyal subject!

In this scene, they're comfortable with each other. SWK talks about how what he wants is to live a lazy life with him and his monkeys, just chilling and eating peaches and basking in the sun? I can't remember exactly what he said but the point is, that he wants things to stay like that forever. Just the two of them (along with a thousand monkeys), living happily in a mountain with SWK being strong enough to protect all of them

SWK gives Macaque a peach. Macaque accepts it; the peach is fine. They're good.

The next time we see one of them give the other a peach is during another flashback, the one where SWK and Macaque are talking while Sun Wukong is sealed under the mountain (the position he was in looked so uncomfortable? He wasn't laying on his belly with the mountain on his back, he looked like he was trying to run away before he got caught with the mountain on his back), and they are definitely not good then

Macaque offers Sun Wukong a peach (read; Macaque offers Sun Wukong a peach, when Wukong was the one to offer one to Macaque before. The sun gives the moon its light, but the moon can't offer anything to it in return) and Sun Wukong acts passive aggressive with him, leaving it clear that no, Mac, he doesn't want that fucking peach (well, maybe he does, but we'll get to that later)

They're both in the right here, but they're also both in the wrong. Macaque is right for being angry at Sun Wukong. If he hadn't followed Azure's plan (he [Azure] was so fucking grooming that monkey, what the fuck. Not sexual btw), the brotherhood would've been fine, and Sun Wukong wouldn't be trapped under the mountain. However, Sun Wukong is also allowed to be angry at Macaque; from his POV, Macaque ran away from the fight when he realized they were losing. Macaque pretty much abandoned him first. I'd be angry too, honestly

Macaque is wrong for telling Sun Wukong that he's the one that got himself in that mess when really, that was partly Azure's fault. Weren't it for him Sun Wukong apparently wouldn't have cared about Heaven, since unlike what happens in JTTW (haven't read it yet, pls tell me if I'm wrong!), all he wanted was to live a comfortable life and train his troops (Azure was the one who saw him first; he found this... child? And thought that yeah, he can use this. He put him in a pedestal and showered him in compliments he didn't deserve nor want. He manipulated him to get what he wanted; not a king, but a weapon)

Sun Wukong is in the wrong for treating Macaque like shit here too, since he literally warned him and again, he wasn't at fault. Neither of them were!

Back to the point — in this scene, when Sun Wukong rejects the peach, Macaque crushes it with his hand. Later, after Macaque leaves, Sun Wukong expresses how he actually really wanted that peach. Or, in other words, Macaque tries to offer Sun Wukong his support, his friendship, and when Sun Wukong rejects it, he gives up and destroys any way of getting back together; later, it is revealed that Sun Wukong didn't genuinely want to be left alone, and that he did still wish to be friends, in a way

This, we can say is the point where their relationship was broken. The peach is left on the floor, abandoned, and Sun Wukong with it. As far as we know, Macaque didn't come back after, and even if he did it's pretty obvious that wouldn't have gone very well

(Also, just to add, and you can skip this part if you want! When Macaque is looking at the memory, he looks kinda confused? Like he doesn't remember it happening that way. Maybe that's one of the LBD messed with when she brought him back, if she even was touching them. I'm not sure if that's canon, I forgot. Please tell me if you know?)

The next and last time one of them offers the other a peach it's, again, Sun Wukong to Macaque (it's almost like that's the way it's meant to be. Huh. Sun and moon indeed haha!)

They're in a beach again! Yay! Sun Wukong's (and possibly Macaque's later, if he gets a proper redemption arc) friends and family (MK and the gang, and also the DBK fam) are there too. Sun Wukong is watching them in the sun (lol) when Macaque goes and joins him. He doesn't even go there to annoy him and as far as we know he didn't even get an invite, so he really just went to the event to chill with SWK. During this whole scene, we can see that Macaque isn't interested in starting a fight (fucking finally, man), even if Sun Wukong does act kinda aggressive at first. Which, y'know. Fair

They're in a beach again. Presumably not the same one, but still a beach. They're back to the beginning, but not really, because they're both different people. They've changed, and their relationship(s) with them

This time, it's not an actual peach being offered. It's a peach popsicle. I don't know how to spell that. Sun Wukong offers it to Macaque, and Macaque looks surprised but eventually accepts it. He appears to be happy with this

This I believe represents how they're both willing to begin a new relationship (platonic, romantic or something else, see it as you want). A new relationship; a changed one

Sun Wukong doesn't give Macaque an actual peach, he gives him a peach popsicle. He's offering his friendship, an offering Macaque accepts, but it's not the same it was before, and it never will be. They know they'll never be the way they were in the past, and they accept it. Sun Wukong offers Macaque his friendship, telling him that it won't be the same, but that if they want to heal then they've got to accept that — and Macaque takes it. It's not the same, there are mistakes that can never be fixed and actions that can't be undone, but they're willing to start anew

It'll be different, but it could be even better if they try (if they fucking COMMUNICATE for once)

And the popsicle will eventually melt. They'll eventually fight again; they'll fall apart, and maybe get so angry at each other they'll refuse to talk to each other for a while (y'know how stubborn they can be), but (usually depending on where you live) popsicles can be surprisingly cheap!

If the popsicle melts, if they struggle, they'll just buy another one, they'll just keep trying

Now all we need is a scene where Sun Wukong (or Macaque, to show them as equals if not in power then in... y'know, their relationship? I'm not sure what the word would be) gives Macaque an actual peach to show how they're them again. Not the same, never the same, but still them
