fashion (n.)
c. 1300, fasoun, "physical make-up or composition; form, shape; appearance," from Old French façon, fachon, fazon "face, appearance; construction, pattern, design; thing done; beauty; manner, characteristic feature" (12c.), from Latin factionem (nominative factio) "a making or doing, a preparing," also "group of people acting together," from facere "to make" (from PIE root *dhe- "to set, put").
I always wanted you to kiss me, with raspberry lips and a cherry popped. But you find ways to escape in your own worlds, fashioning new mazes out of red thread, powered through by needles piercing fragile flesh and roots of roses.
When you cut through scarlet silk, trying to find my impregnable form between the seams, I move my hands, trying to avoid yours; Your muse only exists in your mind, I only exist on a pedestal, staring down at those who write their names on bare feet,
Do you look at my face when you stroke my cheeks, before tracing stars along my spine?
I fashioned myself well, and you try to do so the same with an abnormal grace... --Elda Mengisto

After the Jan. 6 insurrection, I adopted as my email and blog sign-off, “Ceterum autem censeo Factionem Republicanam esse delendam”. And I meant it. Had I assumed the presidency in 2021, I would have immediately had every Republican officeholder with even the most trivial or tangential connection to the assault on democracy jailed. That includes Trump and everyone who voted to challenge the Electoral College vote. I’d have had Justices Thomas and Alito arrested, all on charges of treason and insurrection.
I’d have then had the remaining congress push through the full laundry list of Democratic promised including voting protections and DC statehood, alongside plenty of other long-overdue social investments. After all, how were the Reconstruction Amendments ratified? There were no Southerners to block them.
You see, after Jan. 6, I saw that the United States would be a one-party state one way or another. It would either be imposed by fascist Republican or by Democrats to prevent fascism. But one way or another, the two party system would break, and the choice was us or them. I preferred us.
Of course, Biden and the Democrats didn’t do any of that. They couldn’t. They billed themselves as the party of institutions and the rule of law. They could not act like authoritarians and perform their own autogolpe. And they were right: beside the unrest and violence such a move would provoke, a second civil war, you can’t preserve democracy by euthanizing it.
But I was also right, because after Jan. 6 it was us or them, and the only way to stop fascism was to effectively dismember the GOP. Now it’s too late. We’re past the point of no return. With Trump’s lawless ICE secret police detaining anyone they want, regardless of documentation, and red states free to reject the popular vote, how are we going to have a free and fair election again? The answer is that we won’t for a very long time.

Fashion (n.)
“as a weak substitute for lost morals, the modern individual has fashion” - Hermann Hesse, 1926
Fashion is popular aesthetic expression at a certain time and in a certain context, especially in clothing, footwear , lifestyle, accessories, makeup, hairstyle and body proportions.[1] Whereas a trend often connotes a very specific aesthetic expression, and often lasting shorter than a season, fashion is a distinctive and industry-supported expression traditionally tied to the fashion season and collections.[2] Style is an expression that lasts over many seasons and is often connected to cultural movements and social markers, symbols, class and culture (ex. Baroque, Rococo, etc.). According to sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, fashion connotes "the latest fashion, the latest difference."[3]
Even though they are often used together, the term fashion differs from clothes and costume, where the first describes the material and technical garment, whereas the second has been relegated to special senses like fancy-dress or masquerade wear. Fashion instead describes the social and temporal system that "activates" dress as a social signifier in a certain time and context. Philosopher Giorgio Agamben connects fashion to the current intensity of the qualitative moment, to the temporal aspect the Greek called kairos, whereas clothes belong to the quantitative, to what the Greek called chronos.[4]
Synonym: latest style, prevailing taste, fad, form, look, mode, model, pattern, shape, thing, tone, trend Etymology: appearance, construction, design, thing done, beauty, manner, characteristic feature, custom, adornment

House Dem Leader Says Rioters Destroyed His John Lewis Tribute
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) reported this afternoon that the insurrectionists trashed his tribute poster honoring civil rights icon and former colleague Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) when they ransacked the building.
“While rioters shamefully destroyed this tribute to my brother John Lewis yesterday, let his words continue to echo in the halls of Congress and in our hearts,” Hoyer tweeted. “Let us always stand up, speak up, and speak out against injustice and for our democracy.”
Several members of the mob openly flaunted hate symbols during the attack, including a man who carried a Confederate flag inside the Capital building. Additionally, notorious Neo-Nazi Baked Alaska live-streamed himself gleefully participating in the invasion.
There is no pretending, and no quantity of tokens can dissimulate, how deeply Trumpism is rooted in white supremacy.

The Republican Party has become both radical and ruthless; let’s not forget that most G.O.P. legislators refused to certify President Biden’s election. And while this radicalized party cheerfully authorizes trillions in borrowing whenever it holds the White House, it weaponizes the debt limit whenever a Democrat is president.
During the Obama years, Republicans used the debt limit for blackmail, refusing to raise it unless President Barack Obama agreed to spending cuts — spending cuts the G.O.P. wouldn’t have been able to get passed through the normal legislative process, despite having partial control of Congress.
What’s happening now is even worse. Democrats control both houses of Congress, but Republicans are using the filibuster to block an increase in the debt ceiling with only weeks to go before we hit a wall and default on payments — and they aren’t even making specific demands. They simply don’t want to share any responsibility for governing. “There is no chance Republicans will help lift Democrats’ credit limit so they can immediately steamroller through a socialist binge that will hurt families and help China,” declared Mitch McConnell. If that sounds to you like meaningless word salad, that’s because it is.
[...]
Look, the reason we’re in this situation is that Republicans have learned a terrible truth: Voters don’t know or care about process; they only react to how things are going. The G.O.P. believes that it can benefit from outright, naked sabotage; Democrats shouldn’t worry about undoing that sabotage through whatever tricks they can deploy.
If Republicans are going abuse the system to hold hostage the government’s ability to function every time they are out of power, I can no longer justify Democrats going exclusively by the book. Manners and etiquette cannot counter deliberate GOP sabotage of democracy. It would be worse for Democrats to look weak and helpless than it would overbearing and authoritarian - Republicans taught us that - so I say go ahead and do all that is necessary to sideline McConnell’s subversion.
Ceterum autem censeo Factionem Republicanam esse delendam.

John Cornyn and the rest of the GOP want to turn back the clock to a time when such outrages could be committed with impunity, and with no recourse for the victims. From voting rights to criminal justice to discrimination overt or insidiously implicit, the Republican Party is devoted to no cause more resolutely than they are to reversing all the gains made for Civil Rights and liberation for the marginalized. That is undeniably, unapologetically, their principal mission. Factionem Republicanam delenda est.

A YouGov Direct poll of 1,397 registered voters who had heard about the event finds that most (62%) voters perceive these actions as a threat to democracy. Democrats (93%) overwhelmingly see it this way, while most (55%) Independents also agree. Among Republicans, however, only a quarter (27%) think this should be considered a threat to democracy, with two-thirds (68%) saying otherwise.
In fact, many Republicans (45%) actively support the actions of those at the Capitol, although as many expressed their opposition (43%).
There is no vaccine for this disease.

I want to see all these felons, and thousands more, face maximum penalties. I wonder how many will prove to have direct ties to the GOP.

The good news: Baked Alaska should be spending the next decade in prison, whence social media posting ought not be an option - though he’ll have a ready audience of white nationalists to recruit if he isn’t put in solitary for the entirety of his sentence.
Alternatively, maybe revoking Section 230 might not be such a bad idea after all. If platforms are liable for the third-party content they host, guys like him won’t find a home, Facebook will return to being a place of cute cat videos, and Twitter will be a bad dream. It raises the question of why the police weren’t prepared, given that many of the rioters had publicly proclaimed their intention to do just that in the days and weeks before Jan. 6.
I’ll go for the easy answer: “Some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses." White right-wingers are perceived by law enforcement as allies - even though it’s far-right anti-government militias that murder police regularly and pose the greatest threat to cops. The crowd’s potential for violence - at least violence directed at symbols of authority - was first underestimated, then minimized, then (if selfies posted to social media are to be taken at face value) supported. At least enough men in uniform sympathized with the insurgents to constitute a fifth column operating against their own colleagues. And what is true of that rank-and-file is true of supervisors and high-ranking officials.
It’s not by coincidence that they appear in full paramilitary kit when BLM is expected, while for Proud Boys it’s all smiles and teddy bears.
