I once played farming simulator one year, maybe the 2017 release, because I love sim games and I had played everything else I owned to pieces.
I made it through the tutorials, the beginnings - it was pretty frustrating and tedious, I thought to myself, but maybe once I got the hang of things I would get it, it would be fun. I like a challenge, I could dig in and get better at this! I had spent money on this, after all. It had good ratings, it had nice graphics! It had to be fun once I figured out the learning curve, right?
I kept at it, for 40 hours straight, I kept tilling and plowing and sowing and tending and waiting for it to get fun and finally, finally I had my first real full crop harvested. Triumphant, I took it to the store to sell and...
Barely made enough revenue to recoup seed cost. Have just enough to almost cover the repairs needed to the equipment - but wait, don't forget that you only lease that equipment, you don't own it, so there's that cost too, and - yes, you worked very hard, good job, you're only a little deeper in debt now!
Oh you thought there'd be fun upgrades to unlock after literal full days of dedicated gameplay? You thought there might be some fun fireworks to celebrate your successful harvest? Some swelling of music or new crops and farmland you could now buy? No - no, oh dear, you thought this was a game? No, this is not a sim game, this is a simulator. This is about making high fidelity tractor models of equipment you'll never see in your country (and also for forums where people can collab to model and hack the DRM bricking their multi million dollar IRL tractors, apparently). This is not a game.
just learned about farming simulator
I mean, I already knew about it, but I just learned about it
Did you know that the target audience for Farming Simulator is actual real-world farmers? Because I didn’t. I just assumed that farmers probably don’t want to go home from a day of farming to do some (presumably highly inaccurate) virtual farming?
Like, imagine if the target audience for Power Washing Simulator was actual professional power washers.
Farming Sim gets sponsored by companies and shit to put ads in their games. But since the game is for farmers, all of the ads target farmers. Advertising products that, realistically, only farmers would be interested in. Aka John Deere tractors and shit.
There’s a fucking farming sim esports league. Where do they play? Agriculture conventions. not gaming conventions. agriculture conventions.

rant.. but this time actually pehaps a good one?? wow!!!!
..i lied. anyway, theres this game ive been playing since 2017 (its a roblox thingy) and its been severely going downhill recently so i started playing other stuff but still sometimes read the dumbass complaint posts about it on reddit.. i should probably mention that everything saying something against those posts gets downvoted into oblivion and im not looking to deal with that so here we go!!
theres sooo many issues with this game nowadays; it used to be just like a roleplay game but now its a fucking farming and trading simulator?? (similar to adopt me ngl.. only that they genuinely make the playing experience fun) and people find it extremely funny to harass people for being men or for being dressed in a bit more modern style. what the fuck is wrong with that anyway? ive been called trans or some shit so fucking often without even being that just because i wasn't interested in some girl online? im literally not even- anyhow. can people please just goddamn stop complaining and let people have their fun (if its not dumb trolling or the flirting shit i was just talking about)?? reddit is stupid as fuck.
i dont know if this makes any sense but i feel like i expressed what i wanted to say the best i could.

Blog 9 – Taking Virtual Reality to the Next Level
The creative potential of virtual reality has always been the medium's standout feature, offering developers near infinite possibilities to experiment. In this blog, I will explore potential ideas and mechanics from existing video games that can be utilized in virtual reality, enhancing both immersion and entertainment. Additionally, I will also present a theoretical concept that could, in my view, significantly improve the virtual experience for everyone.
Tumblr media
Exploring beyond the confines of our reality has been the goal of humanity since the beginning. Writers fictionalized universes beyond their own in their books, painters brought life to those words through art and finally, today, developers are creating those realities for others to transverse through Virtual Reality (VR). The scope of ambition has only magnified over time, especially with the rise of VR and XR technology and its implementation in the entertainment industry. As Lanier (2017) puts it, “By integrating established game mechanics into VR environments, developers can create experiences that are both familiar and transformative, bridging the gap between traditional gaming and full immersion.” Today, the entertainment industry, including 3D cinemas and video games, is boldly experimenting in its quest to reach a level of immersion that borders on reality itself.
As Sherman and Craig (2019) observe, the evolution of VR brings with it the challenge of moving beyond novelty to create meaningful interactions that redefine our engagement with digital content. This is especially true for video games, where visual immersion and physical interaction with the virtual world provides an unprecedented level of immersion. Thus, developing VR should, naturally, be the next step in the evolution of entertainment, but one that still requires significant innovation before it reaches its true potential. For video games, this involves experimenting with new mechanics for both interaction and storytelling along with other sensory advancements that could enhance the immersive experience.
Tumblr media
One area offering insights into deeper immersion pertains to the rise of simulation-based games such as Microsoft’s “Flight Simulator” (2020) and Slightly Mad Studios' “Project Cars 2” (2017). These games replicate real-life activities, capturing the essence of their respective genres through meticulous attention to detail. Not only are these games immensely popular, but remarkably, most achieved this level of immersion without the use of VR technology. Instead, these games expertly capture the essence of flying, driving and farming etc. by simulating every aspect of the activities - including the monotonous and seemingly mundane tasks - in order to fully recreate the experience. These games are primarily developed with the intention of allowing users to experience every facet of the activity within the comfort of their homes.     Learning from these simulation type games, it’s clear that players are drawn to experiences that allow them to engage in new activities, even if they include repetitive or tedious tasks like checking altitude gauges in Flight Simulator or operating machinery in Farming Simulator. VR programs could capitalize on this allure, developing content that faithfully captures such experiences holistically. Furthermore, new VR gear including haptic feedback controllers, that mimic tactile sensations from the interaction with virtual objects, could further heighten the immersion.
Tumblr media
However, while these simulation games boast success, it often comes at the sacrifice of narrative storytelling or any form of action – an essential component of most video games. While they excel at creating realistic experiences, their lack of narrative depth can lead to monotony over time. This problem, however, can be solved by blending the simulation gameplay with a cohesive narrative that can provide context and motivation for the players' actions. A promising example of such an integration can be seen in Bippinbits’ upcoming game " PVKK: Planetenverteidigungskanonenkommandant” that has the players take charge of a large planetary cannon which they must operate in order to protect their world from foreign threats. With a staggeringly detailed operating station that the players must use to operate the planetary cannon, the game is best described as a planetary cannon simulator. Yet, despite its simulation-like gameplay, PVKK features an unfolding narrative across several in-game days, culminating in a grand finale.
This impressive amalgamation of simulation and narrative gameplay offers a blueprint that can be used in VR game development. By focusing on both player immersion and narrative justification, VR games can effectively capture the true essence of the activity. Additionally, incorporating elements of time into VR gameplay could simulate the passage of time more effectively, further enhancing the immersive experience.
As Ryan (2015) states, “Virtual reality offers an unprecedented level of immersion, allowing users to not just observe but actively participate in simulated worlds, fundamentally altering the nature of storytelling and interaction.” This aspect of VR can be amplified through the incorporation of advanced artificial intelligence with VR. With the rise of sophisticated artificial intelligence that is capable of analyzing and being trained using vast quantities of data, dynamic games can be created that are capable of reacting to player’s actions in the virtual world.
Tumblr media
For instance, in a VR flight simulator, the AI can be used to create unique weather effects that would directly affect the aircraft and its flying capabilities. Trained AI could also be used to simulate panic among the flight crew and the passengers requiring the intervention of the pilot (player) through the use of pilot’s speech functions. AI-driven non-player characters (NPCs) could further be used to simulate real-life emotions and scenarios, adding depth to ethical and emotional dilemmas reminiscent of Papers, Please (2013) by 3909 LLC. Such games, while simple from the outset, challenge one’s morality and ethical flexibility to its limits, and thus a first-person VR adaption for such games would provide an unparalleled level of engagement by immersing players directly in these dilemmas. As Murray (2017) notes, VR uniquely engages users’ emotions and intellectual abilities, making it an ideal medium for such experiences.
In conclusion, VR is a diverse, yet underexplored, frontier in the entertainment industry that demands tremendous experimentation and innovation. Traditional approaches to game design are insufficient in the VR landscape and thus new models of storytelling and immersive mechanics are essential to fully exploit the medium’s potential. By embracing the mundane aspects of reality, providing narrative context for repetitive tasks, and harnessing AI to create dynamic, lifelike experiences, VR can finally achieve the level of immesion that the visionaries of old had long dreamed of. The journey toward true immersion is still unfolding, but its destination promises to redefine the very fabric of interactive entertainment.
