An in-depth assessment into origin and spread of SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant in Brazil

There has been a steady rise in the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases due to the Delta variant in Brazil. This was alarming, especially following the emergence of the P.1 (Gamma) variant of concern (VOC), which spread radically throughout the country since January 2021, accounting for more than 90% of the weekly cases.

The Delta severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) VOC, which originated in India, has now spread worldwide and contributed to a relevant rise in hospitalizations and deaths. However, its origin and dissemination in Brazil still remain unclear.

The lack of information on the activity of the Delta variant in Brazil is despite frequent reports of isolated cases from different Brazilian states like São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Minas Gerais (MG), Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Tocantins (TO), Paraná (PR), Goiás (GO), and Maranhão (MA).

Brazilian researchers from different educational institutions collaborated to characterize the dissemination of the Delta VOC in Brazil and assess its emergence within the global Delta phylogeny. The researchers of this study, which was published on the preprint server medRxiv*, also characterized the mutational profile of the largest clade within the Brazilian Delta VOCs, with a focus on samples obtained in the State of São Paulo, especially in the city of São Paulo, which is the largest metropolis of South America, as well as a national and international transportation hub.

Upon analyzing the impact of the spread of the Delta VOC in Brazil, the researchers concluded that there were at least 10 different Delta VOC introductions that had spread over eight Brazilian states in the first semester of 2021. Four apparently unrelated transmission chains were identified in the states of São Paulo, Paraná, Goiás, and Maranhão, which validated the presence and transmission of the Delta VOC in Brazil.

Introduction

I came to the Fronteira Agricola to understand My Uncle Marty and his work as a missionary and this Brazil. Brazil was flies the flag with the motto ‘Ordem e Progresso’, a reference to Auguste Comtes’ ‘L'amour pour principe et l'ordre pour base; le progrès pour but.’ I have sought to understand the Fronteira Agricola through this prism.

Comte and his thinking were born of the French revolution and sought to question tradition, create a system which puts mankind at it’s centre and allow for the social to evolve. That is how I read order and progress. This type of thinking evolved in a Europe which had become enslaved by its own past and where the majority sought change.

The Fronteira Agricola is a repetition of European colonialism in Africa, and expansionism in the United States and Russia (later the USSR). Social stagnation can be maintained, justified, perpetuated by expansion which  creates opportunities, reduces absolute poverty while increasing relative poverty. Those who are the victims of the policy are marginalised and discredited. Here is no exception, the indigenous have been ignored and assimilated. Those who have arrived are climate change refugees from the northeast and relatively poor farmers from the south. The major source of state legitimacy for Tocantins is economic. As long as there is an ever expanding international economy and part of the pie for everyone, there will be no problem.

I believe it was a conference in Warszawa with Etienne Balibar who was talking about the status of illegal immigrants in Europe compared to the United States. What marked me, as someone who can no longer claim to be from somewhere specific was his models for outsider/society interaction.

There is of course the foreigner who comes with their values and way of life which they continue to live by and through which they see the world. This was the model of the colonialists, upon which the British empire was built and victorian literature is based. Then there is ‘going native’, assimilating local values and assuming their lifestyle. One changes in order to become part of the local society. The problem with going native is to loose yourself by becoming the other, which is what happened to William Whyte when researching ‘Street Corner Society’. The final model is that of the stranger, adapting to the local lifestyle in order to understand their values but without forgetting who they are, where you come from; your blindspot. For me I will never understand that Ireland shouldn’t win a major international team sporting championship or that food is just not important.

In Brazil, I have tried to do just that. The depth of the cultural divided has revealed how French I am, obsessed by food and perhaps most importantly the question of progress. Does progress exist? Is it a false god? Even if we don’t believe in it should we live as though it exists?

The mission and my Uncle’s role here can be resumed in a joke an old bishop told him:

If you give a man a bag of rice you’re a good man. If you ask why he’s poor you’re a communist!

Things have changed since John Paul II died but the questions of Ordem e Progressa in Brazil are still very present.
