hello, hope you're doing well! not quite to do with your fics, moreso art history itself. uh, i know you're studying art history (as you've mentioned) and i (a curious student who must make decisions and who was rereading ahb! and decided that they miss the subject) wanted to ask what were the things you cover in your art history courses? like, what all is it that you study and do, i suppose. i did art before for my finals before dropping it when choosing my IB HLs (like a levels, i suppose) but i'm not sure how much of that is the same i guess. ANYWAY, i did some research but i thought i could ask someone who's as passionate in the subject as you are.
sorry if this is an inconvenience or anything else, lmao
not an inconvenience at all!! i’m so happy to answer/talk about this!!
so the way my university course was structured for undergrad, we had three lower division art history classes. (Core Art Studio 1, Prehistoric-Renaissance Art Survey, Renaissance-Contemporary Art Survey) where the survey classes were lecture style seminars where we went over major art movements, artists, and pieces of each time period. Like a giant crash course in art history over the course of human existence essentially.
Then we had to take three mandatory upper division classes. (Art History Politics of Display, (why/how we display art in museums and the implications of that) Art History Methodologies, (how to analyze art and the frameworks we use. like feminist, queer, postmodern lenses etc) And Art Historical Research (basically independent class to write a paper on an art history subject of your choosing. Like a mini dissertation or thesis normally the paper you’d submit for graduate programs when you apply)
And then the rest of our art history classes had to satisfy different regions and time periods. So you needed one European Art History class, One African or Middle Eastern Art History Class, One Latin American Art History Class, and then One Oceanic Art History Class or Arts and the Diaspora class
and then time periods you needed one prehistoric art history class, one classical civilization class, one renaissance time period, one 1800s, one modern.
And you could double dip so if I took class in exploring sexuality through Italian statutes in the 1500s class or smth it would count as a European art class and a renaissance class. (So you can check off an area and time period)
If you have any hour requirements that need to be met after you meet the above requirements you are free to take any other art history courses you want (this is how you can have an area of focus or concentration as an undergrad) so if I took a lot of modern art classes then I could say I had a bachelors degree in Art History with an emphasis on Modern Art
You span all time periods and regions of Art with an art history degree!! You tend to specialize in an area in graduate school or in your PhD program :)
I hope this makes sense!!! And wasn’t too confusing/too much!! <33

haikyuu!! third gym squad taking the ib diploma programme
Tumblr media
ok... my friend and i got rlly stressed the other day and made headcanons for these guys if they were to take classes in the ib... it’s like a levels but like... a bit more death!
for my ib diploma folks you can just hop on over and read what i’ve hc’d but for my non-ib folks, lemme give you a bit of an introduction to the ib diploma programme.
characters included: bokuto koutarou, kuroo tetsurou, akaashi keiji, tsukishima kei, haiba lev, hinata shouyou
Tumblr media
THE IB DIPLOMA PROGRAMME is a rigorous two-year pre-college program in your last two years of high school. a full programme consists of one class from each of the six required groups (totalling to 6 classes), which are G1 - first language; G2 - second language; G3 - social sciences; G4 - natural sciences; G5 - mathematics; and G6 - arts (though, arts is optional, and can be switched out with another subject from G3 or G4).
within these six courses, students are required to take at least three high-level (HL) courses and three standard level courses (SL), but some students may take four HL courses and have two SL courses (kind of a rough one tho).
just to note: there’s two types of math courses - applications and interpretations (Math AI) and analysis and approaches (Math AA). MAA courses are known to be harder than MAI courses because students do more theory work and have non-calculator sections in exams, unlike MAI courses where calculators are required for every exam. also, it is possible for a person to take IB courses instead of the full diploma programme, but i’m not very well acquainted with that variation of the IB programme so we’re just going to assume all the boys got 6 courses.
okay. i am so sorry i just lectured you on a whole school curriculum. anyways. back to haikyuu!!
Tumblr media
BOKUTO KOUTAROU : Japanese Language and Literature HL, Mandarin Ab Initio SL, Geography HL, SEHS (Sports, Exercise, and Health Science) HL, Math AI SL, Economics SL
ok so it’s canon that this dude is not doing very well in math but his parents made him do higher level math at first poor boy >:(
he started the year off in higher level and thought he was gonna be fine
no. he was not fine.
so he ended up switching his math hl to sl and his japanese sl to hl
IT IS CANON (special chapter in volume 19 titled “i just forgot” where bokuto has a wholeass crisis about words) that bokuto’s really one to actually really like to think about how words work and function as systems in the same way ib language courses do!!
actually having him do japanese ll hl is just an excuse for me to keep him in math sl sorry
i mean koutarou may be my fav tax evader but he really did sit through two years worth of econ classes... smh
mans is Not listening and has to rely on yukie for notes but he just memorises case studies for exams and does not do anything else
i feel like he just takes mandarin because he thought it was the easiest one... he also thinks the words sound similar so it’s easy to memorise
he’s a pretty good communicator so he practices his mandarin quite a lot. as in, he’s made friends to talk to in mandarin. we love to see it!!!
also. um. i hc that he’s pretty decent at memorisation so geography!! this goes for memorising all the kanji and mandarin characters too
i think SEHS is pretty self-explanatory. mans already known he wanna be a pro athlete might as learn about being healthy as an athlete
Tumblr media
KUROO TESTUROU : Japanese Language and Literature SL, English B SL, Business Management HL, Chemistry HL, Math AI HL, Biology HL
now... we all know this mf been taking chemistry hl. it is CANON
and as per his career path... DEFINITELY business management hl
i feel like he’s so analytical in the way he sees things that he likes to explore many areas of knowledge where there are different ways of thinking
takes english as a second language because... whew.. aint it sexy when mans wanna be multifaceted in business
also takes higher level biology because he’d rather not with the languages... but later on i believe he ends up in a higher level language class because he might as well
i feel like kuroo’s classes just give me a vibe i know too too well...
mans takes math ai. he does not wanna fuck around with a pencil proving a theorem he just wants the answer bro
like in volleyball, he’s a quick thinker. so he’s pretty g with math and business stuff
i literally know someone with this class combo ... it’s not very chill but it screams “you never see me do any course work but i always get at least a B+ in every subject”
Tumblr media
AKAASHI KEIJI :  Japanese Language and Literature HL, French Ab Initio SL, Psychology HL, Chemistry SL, Math AA SL, Visual Arts HL
now... this subject combo radiates such pretty energy
pretty subjects for a pretty boy
he was originally going to do biology sl but then found out there is chemistry in biology so he just decided with chemistry. plain and simple.
we all know akaashi is both emotionally and academically intelligent
he’s logical and analytical, and when faced with a tough time he works through it well albeit going through a little bit of struggle
this automatically puts him in math aa... i just see him actually liking proving theorems???
but maybe he just thinks his calculator is a nuisance sometimes and would rather solve everything by hand
also art boy! this dude likes graphic design more but when it comes to traditional art he does Not Hold Back
i like to think that he’s into painting backgrounds and mixed media
if he didn’t take VA, i’m pretty sure he would take economics. because. it’s quite systematic and i think akaashi would take a liking to it
as for japanese ll hl... we all know this dude was supposed to be a part of the literary section in a magazine/manga company but was moved to editor
goes hand-in-hand with psychology, likes to know how words convey meaning and how they affect people
he also thinks french is kind of a cool language. i feel like this guy just wants to do it because it sounds cool and novel for him
all in all, pretty solid subject combo!
Tumblr media
TSUKISHIMA KEI : Japanese Language and Literature HL, French Ab Initio SL, History HL, Biology SL, Math AA HL, Instrumental Music HL
4 hl’s... here we are folks
honestly does it for colleges to go like “holy shit this dude is kinda crazy”
but does suffer... coursework tings :)
first of all this dude takes french (even though it’s a beginner’s class) because he just loves to sound cool huh
the summer before his courses started he would have had the basics down after looking through free ib textbooks
plus, being the guy that’s super good at a new language in the class is a huge ass flex and a big ass ego boost. and anyways, with language, he thinks it’s just a lot of simple patterns working together.
this also applies to japanese ll hl... finds writing essays and making arguments ez (at least that’s what he tells himself - he’s kinda nervous when it comes to japanese but he holds on anyway)
practices extra hard on pronunciation. sounds hot tho
math aa hl??? there we go. another crazy one. thought he could ace the class at first.... no. no he couldn’t
thinks about moving down to sl. probably does. (at least it’s not math ai)
history and biology go hand in hand for him. he has significant interests in prehistoric times, and likes to learn about the origins of life - that’s a given
but he does get tired of the politics talk in history like... goddamn all these people making so many mistakes? just stop making them smh
and instrumental music was just something he got onto because he really would like to just have a course where he could enjoy himself while also learning about the stuff he likes
nobody knows what music he listens to... but i think he’s willing to listen to anything as long as it’s music and it has the kinds of vibes he digs
Tumblr media
HAIBA LEV: Japanese Language and Literature SL, Mandarin Ab Initio SL, Psychology HL, Chemistry SL, Math AI HL, Theatre HL
i don’t know how to explain it but lev has such strong psych and chem energy
yes haiba lev’s classes are the ones i picked via roulette wheel
jk not really
here’s the thing though, lev takes psychology because he thinks econ, business management, history, ess, all that jazz is just... absolutely boring. like. super. mf-ing. boring.
so he’s like ooh cognitive processes!
kinda hates that he has to study research methods and research methods ONLY at first but when he gets the hang of it he really finds it one of his fav subs
i actually have no explanation for mandarin ab initio sl... he just seemed like the kind of guy who would wanna do the class solely because he thinks mandarin sounds cool with their intonations and everything
plus he heard that the teacher gives mooncakes every lunar new year ad he. loves. them.
okay now hear me out.
lev is good at math.
maybe not lightning speed analysis or calculations like akaashi, but he finds solving problems fun! except for when they’re without a calculator bc he HATES doing calculations by hand
he can get a bit clumsy with his hand calculations too so it’s nice to just have a calculator on hand
literally only does math ai for the sake of using a calculator at all times (a/n: i take this class, and this was the reason i took it too. COMPLETELY VALID)
and then does theatre for the fun of it!!! confidence levels high for presentations and performances... good fit
kinda thought that ib theatre would be his easy A but oh how he was wrong... hates the research tasks at first but he gets used to it
Tumblr media
HINATA SHOUYOU: Japanese Language and Literature SL, Portuguese Ab Initio SL, SEHS HL, Geography HL, Math AI SL, Theatre HL
his classes are bokuto energy but with theatre and portuguese
MANGA SPOILERS! we all know he started thinking abt going to brazil in his second year of high school, and the ib diploma programme starts in the last two years of high school so it fits PERFECTLY
lowkey most of the boys take japanese ll sl because they just. have to.
this is also hinata’s case <3
SEHS HL!!! he has a vision for the future and it definitely involves him understanding health and sports and everything like that, especially after nationals in his first year :(((( still sad abt that
but he’s motivated for this higher level class because he’s really just gonna go all out with the research
math ai sl because... he prolly don’t give a fuck about numbers!!! (it hasn’t been made clear already, but math ai sl is the lowest level math course)
he also took theatre hl because even though he does get scared at first, he’s a natural when it comes to learning new cultures
he’s just so curious about it all and it makes him quite engaged in the class as well!!!!
also kinda took theatre because the other subjects were just not it for him
about geography... he hates memorisation but he also hates everything else in the social studies group so
he just gets by by trying to find the little details of the things he’s studying interesting because really... geography class is just the base of all the places on his bucket list
hinata’s def one of those dudes who picks his subs purely off of liking because we all know he’s going. any subject that isn’t based off of liking is usually a mandatory subject anyways

Some Words From A Former IB Student
Apparently, despite having graduated high school two years ago, I still follow IB tags on here, and a lot of the posts that have been popping up have been... reminding me of my own experiences. I wanted to write these down as a way to help current IB students or future IB students who feel as isolated, lost and absolutely destroyed as I did for large portions of my experience.
If you aren’t interested in listening to someone ramble about a somewhat uncommon high school speciality program, please skip.
Some background here: I graduated Spring of 2018 with my IB diploma and my Ontario Secondary School Diploma, but I actually started off with international baccalaureate back in grade 7. Yeah, you can start that early. I went to a rather expensive private school and one of their talking points was that they used the IB program all the way through. So they not only ran the diploma program (what most people will experience), but also the primary years program and the middle years program. I did the middle years program and the diploma program. So prior to starting DP, I had already completed a handful of assignments and various works for my MYP program, including the personal project, which is a hell unto itself but at least lets you be creative. And then, in 2016, I started DP, where I took HL Literature, HL Visual Arts, HL History, SL Mathematics, SL Chemistry and SL French. Which is an absolutely bizarre spread, I’ll be honest. I also went into DP with undiagnosed ADHD, undiagnosed and untreated severe anxiety, severe social anxiety, depression and a handful of sensory processing issues that came bundled in with ADHD.
So yeah. I did not start IB off well. I also went into grade 12/year 2 with a predicted 26 points, which is only two points above the minimum. So that was fun.
However, I managed it. I got through IB and I have the diploma to prove it (at least, my dad does. It’s currently back home instead of in my University apartment).
And so.. here are a few things I needed to hear, and I think others need to hear.
1. IB is NOT an accurate reflection of university.
I should know. I’m in third year. Some aspects are very similar - you are expected to manage readings and extra work outside of class and for many humanities subjects, your lecture times may be filled with discussions. You are expected to have a fairly decent course load. Depending on your program, there may be overarching projects or assignments similar to the extended essay. However. IB scoring can give you an incredibly warped perspective on grades. For many IB students, getting a 3 or a 4 can be incredibly stressful. But to put it into perspective - a 3 is a 70-76 percent. A 4 is a 77-83 percent.
To reference my Sensory and Perception Psych course from this term, my university considers a 70-79 to be good work. Meets all requirements and is satisfactory above that. They count it as a B.
IB scoring gives you an absolutely terrible perspective on grades, and this will cause you an insane amount of stress starting university if you aren’t prepared. You need to recalibrate your concept of “good” grades, for your own mental wellbeing.
2. IB requires you to be constantly working. And it isn’t healthy.
I’m a third year student and I work a part time job, typically 10-20 hours a week, on top of currently taking the maximum amount of classes I can per term (5) and I am still doing less work than I was in IB.
Ib may cause you to experience stress when you have free time where you feel like you should be doing something. And this can be absolutely draining for your mental wellbeing, and make your time off be less of a relaxation time and more of a mental hell. You need time off. IB does not teach you that in any way, and so I’m so sorry to say that it is up to you to learn how to enjoy free time.
You need to learn to give yourself a break.
3. It’s... okay if you fail.
Its not the end of the world if you don’t get your diploma. It’s not the end of the world if you do poorly on the exams.
If you can get your high school diploma, you’re doing fantastic. Failing IB will not kill you. It’ll be upsetting, yes, but you’ll get past it. This isn’t something to put all of your wellbeing into.
Please, please, do not put all of your self worth into IB.
It is not worth it.
Talk to your teachers. Talk to your school councilors. Talk to your friends, and parents if they’re willing to listen. Do not be trapped in that headspace where you feel like you have to succeed, or the world will end.
Most university students get in without IB. It is a boost, yes, but you can get in and complete university completely successfully without IB.
It is not worth destroying your wellbeing over.

I’m thinking of applying to Cambridge as an English student. I’m not a UK citizen and have limited knowledge on application via UCAS. How does it work? Do you have any advice?
Hi!
I was really similar to you. Not many people from my school apply and honestly the UK application system is a bit of a mystery and even worse is the system of applying to Cambridge. I applied for Natural Sciences so there will be differences, for example I was required to take a pre-admissions test whilst for english they would probably require academic work instead.
So, here goes a condensed list of applying to Cambridge for someone who has absolutely no idea!
UCAS
To apply anywhere in the UK you need to do it through UCAS. You can apply to 5 or less universities and only one of Cambridge or Oxford (unless you want to be an organ scholar I think?). You usually apply through your school so get your teacher/ college counselor/ principle involved. You need one reference, a personal statement, and records of your grades.
Your Personal Statement
This is super important for someone studying english!! Less so for me, but you really need to think carefully about this. I’m going to admit my statement was awful, but there’s lots of great examples online and watch a lot of youtube videos of people giving advice on their personal statements. Basically, this is an opportunity for you to write why you love the course you’re applying for, why you’re a good fit for it, and examples of how you’ve engaged with it (reading, courses, etc).
Deadline:
Get your application in by October 15th! Cambridge has an earlier application than most UK schools.
Picking a college
This is going to be where you live, eat, and have supervisions for the next 3 years. It’s a huge part of your experience as you don’t usually have much contact with your university outside of exams or lectures. Your college sorta is your university, as you pay fees to it and they decide to accept you (not the university).
Both in your UCAS application and in something that you will be send by email afterwards called the SAQ, you need to pick a college. Pick one you like! It might be worth looking into rents/scholarships if that’s something that you’re interested in. Stay away from “Playing the game” by applying to a ‘bad’ college for a better chance to get in. Cambridge has a pool (basically if you don’t get into your first college another one can take you).
You can also choose to apply to no college, where you’ll be randomly allocated. I didn’t do this mainly because if you identify as female (or non binary) on your application you could be pooled into an all girls college, which are great but not the experience some people want for uni.
Admissions Tests
Some subjects do this. You take an admissions test in November. You can do this at a test centre, but this usually costs money. Ask your school to become a test centre. It’s really easy and all you need is a test room, a teacher free to invigilate, and a lockable cupboard to put the exams in.
Interviews
If you have the grades, you will usually be invited to a Cambridge interview. This is super expensive because they sometimes don’t tell you about your interview date until a week or two before, and you have to pay for flights yourself. I think some colleges offer up to 80 pounds on travel, but it depends on where you apply.
Interviews vary by college. In english I hear they ask you to read an article and discuss it, and also go over your written work you sent in. I’m planning on doing an interview help post later!
Offer
In January (there’s a specific day and all colleges use this day) you hear if you have a place. The UK works on offers, so they’ll usually ask you to graduate with certain grades. My offer in the IB was 42 points with a 776 in Chemistry, Biology, and Maths at HL. Some offers are higher and some lower, it depends on the college and the person.
Note, by sometimes in May? (I think) you have to pick 2 universities that you want to go to. One becomes your “main” which you go to if you get the grades and the other your ‘insurance’ which you go to if you don’t meet the grades of the first one but meet the second. So usually, you pick a second uni with a lower offer.
Your results
When your results come out you either meet your offer (yay!) or you don’t. If you just miss your offer you could be put into the ‘summer pool.’ Note your college would tell you if you were int he pool though. This is basically a chance for colleges to fill places with students who are amazing, but narrowly missed their offer. This means you could still be accepted to cambridge, but to a different college than you applied or got your offer from.

Tomorrow morning (July 19th) at 10AM (PST) @hughleeman will be hosting his latest lecture via San Francisco State University, entiltled "Ancient Rome's Judeo-Christian Connection To Today". The title pretty much says it all. This will be highly informative one hour lecture, totally free to the public at: https://www.campusce.net/sfsu/course/course.aspx?C=884&pc=120&mc=0&sc=0 "Beneath Rome’s soil lies the secret that accelerated the rise of a republic transformed through art that masked reality with the godly ambition of Emperors. A new religion will arise atop the eternal city’s ancient foundations built on the back of a fallen kingdom. In art and architecture at the confluence of myth and history, we rediscover Rome through the stories deep within our western world today." - HL I'm really digging Hugh's take on Art History and it's pkace/influence in modern day society. My Lecture on Online Hate and Racism
To begin I learnt about hostility towards different groups online which is a huge part of today’s society considering the amount of racism, sexism and Islamophobia that people have endured. The issues brought up in this lecture allured me were ‘social networking sites and hate’ as it is a platform that has played a vital part in the spread of hate against different types of people along with ‘algorithms of oppression’ due to the fact that it is a common factor because people believe sources that are on the top sites are the most popular trustworthy and credible whether true or not.
Social Network Sites and Hate

Furthermore, when thinking about the lecture on ‘social networking sites and hate’ was vital considering social media is growing and people express their views and opinions whether they are hateful or not. Tamara Shepherd argued, “more optimistic pronouncements of the Internet’s ability to offer spaces for productive democratic interactivity seem at best naive in what can be framed as the current ascendancy of online hate”. Shepherd implies that the free speech online has created the chance for people to state their own detest for the opposite gender, race, religions and beliefs. For example, an anti-Semitic tweet in 2014 involved a user named ‘Hamas Palestine’ mentioning killing Jews for fun while using the hashtag and stating ‘killjews’ which is usually used for starting a movement . Movements like these are extremely dangerous as it usually gathers more attention. In 2015, Donald Trump made sexist remarks against one of his opponents while running for president as he said she could not please her husband which was of course sexual remarks. This was not the first time Trump had made these sexual remarks as in 2005, he was bragging about sexually assault . This was brought up several times during his 2016 U.S. election campaign and this spread throughout different social media platforms such as Twitter and YouTube while also being shown through memes.

Algorithms of Oppression
Tumblr media

In addition to this, ‘algorithms of oppression’ is important due to the facts news ends up being one of the popular parts of the internet whether it is good or bad. According to Safiya Noble, just two years before her book [2016’s Black Girls Code, an organisation teaching and mentoring black girls], searching on “black girls” surfaced “Black Booty on the Beach” and “Sugary Black Pussy”. Another example involves typing in “baby” and when that word is typed in on Google Images, only white babies appear. This is a reoccurring example that has been reinforced by the media several times across the years, particularly in European and North American nations.

Final Thoughts
In conclusion, ‘online hate and racism’ taught me the importance of how social media provokes hate online. It dissected how online hate can emerge and I believe the social networking sites which creates a forum of freedom of speech and algorithms of oppression which display the most stereotypical or sometimes offensive aspects of a particular topic. Therefore, these issues are the most vital causes of this which helped to extend my knowledge of online hate.

holy shit i've been looking through your blog and you are so hardworking and dedicated and amazing??? goals haha. i would love to go to law school but my gpa is pretty trash right now (3.3ish - i'm a rising sophomore by the way). do you have any advice on how i can raise it / get myself super motivated?
!!!!!!!!!
aah bb what???? I don’t even know what on my blog would lead you to believe that, but thank you so, so much for your kind words (!!!) and thank you also for taking the time to drop by :’)
a few tips on raising your GPA (from my own self-reflection and experiences, so please take them with a grain of salt and feel free to ignore any/all points!!):
are your study methods working? In high school, I slept--on average--4 hours a night and truly believed that I was studying for all of the hours that I’d sit at my desk after I’d gotten home from school and extracurricular commitments... only to discover, during my freshman year of college, that I was being an inefficient student. My butt was in a chair with my study materials laid out in front of me, for sure, but I needed to switch up the ways in which I studied. Evaluate your study methods and see if the way that you’ve been studying for your courses is the best way that you absorb information; if not, re-evaluate and try new methods until you find one that suits you best!
cut out all distractions. I always preferred handwriting my notes, but if you use your laptop for note-taking in class, turn off the wifi or install external apps that do not allow you to go on applications other than your word processor--and put your laptop on Do Not Disturb mode so that you don’t get any text or email notifications! I was always a front-row kinda gal, but especially so for whenever I’d use my laptop for note-taking, as other people having my screen in view forced me to focus on the professor and the lecture at hand.
if you need a social media break, use it to your advantage! i always loved scrolling down the HLS instagram, as it’d be simultaneously informative and motivating, serving as a way for me to learn about what’s going on at the law school while also giving me that surge of determination to find myself there, one day. did i get in? no! but the impact it had on my GPA did get me into peer law schools, and I have zero regrets!
set your phone/laptop background screens to whatever motivates you! I had a photo of Austin Hall, the building housing the HLS admissions office, as my laptop background throughout all my years of college, and I’d photoshopped the median/75th GPA and LSAT requirements on the bottom of the photo so that every time I opened my laptop, I was reminded of The Goal. Same with my phone; I alternated pictures of HLS as my lock screen (and my early morning alarms during finals/midterms/etc. were all captioned something along the lines of “STUDY NOW, STUDY IN LANGDELL LATER!”) so that I wouldn’t be tempted to goof off on my social media apps!
I might have been a tad extra, to be quite frank, but these methods worked out well for me :’) I hope this helps somewhat, love, and best of luck!! x

Course: Berlin.Selection.Oct28-Nov1
Course: GENOME-WIDE SIGNATURES OF SELECTION AND ASSOCIATION STUDIES Where: Free University of Berlin When: 28 October -1 November 2019 General Topic: Genome-wide analysis of selection signatures and genotype-phenotype associations INSTRUCTORS: Dr. Pablo Orozco-terWengel (Cardiff University, Wales (UK)) ( https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?user=urqxLJgAAAAJ&hl=en ) Dr. Filippo Biscarini (CNR, ITA) ( https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Filippo_Biscarini ) Overview This course will introduce students, researchers and professionals into the field of using genomics data to identify meaningful genomic regions. The course comprises two approaches: one based only on genomic information, which will use populations genetics techniques to detect signatures of selection (both natural and artificial); the other approach will combine genomic and phenotypic data to identify genetic associations for specific phenotypes (i.e. GWAS, genome-wide association studies). Format The course is structured in modules over five days. Each day will include an introductory lecture with class discussion of key concepts. The remainder of each day will consist of practical hands-on sessions. These sessions will involve a combination of both mirroring exercises with the instructor to demonstrate a skill as well as applying these skills on your own to complete individual exercises. After and during each exercise, interpretation of results will be discussed as a group. TARGETED AUDIENCE & ASSUMED BACKGROUND The course is aimed at advanced students, researchers and professionals interested in learning how to make use of genomic information to study how selection has shaped the genome and how the genome influences measurable phenotypes. It will include information useful for both beginners and more advanced users. We will start by introducing general concepts of population genetics, which will take up most of the first half of the course; the second half of the course will be centered mainly on GWAS and related aspects. Attendees should have a background in biology, specifically genetics. There will be a mix of lectures and hands-on practical exercises using R and the Linux command line, and bespoke software. Some basic understanding of R programming and the Linux environment will be advantageous. Attendees should have also some familiarity with genomic data such as those arising from NGS experiments, including genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS), and commercial genotyping platforms.
