Pues una historia my difícil para una actriz como Julianne Moore 

que tiene el estilo, la fama y el garbo de ser una rompecorazones. Una mujer de bandera, guapa a rabiar, con estilo, personalidad y temple. Supongo que la motivaría la historia, pero no sé si era la mejor opción para el papel.

Sin embargo las tribulaciones con su propia identidad están mejor vividas en Elliot Page, que me parece que da con el tono de la historia con total intensidad. Realmente es una chica lesbiana. Sencillamente da con el tono con total acierto.

La historia es un poco "simplona". Quince años antes hubiera pegado muy fuerte y supongo que en los círculos del cine de género gay estará muy reconocida, pero no es una gran cinta. Blandita por momentos, en otros se pierde en contar matices poco trascendentes y siempre me queda la sombra de la dificultad de encajar a Moore en el papel, muy diferentes a todos los que ha hecho.

Es la primera película que veo del director, que no ha rodado muchas.

Oh, and I've had to stop adolescents doing DIY haircuts for other people with a freeheld pocket knife. Hacking at someone's hair - sometimes in the direction of their neck! - with a knife isn't practicing knife safety. Not even close. I always talk about a blood circle - if you held your knife out in your hand, stretched your arm out, and spun in a circle, would anyone be bleeding? If the answer is yes, you are too close to other people. Move away from them before you get your knife out. And if you're deliberately slicing towards someone's neck with a knife, not only are they in your blood circle but you are very intentionally doing something quite dangerous and I don't want to deal with someone cutting another person on the neck. That could get bad quickly, and the classic response is "I don't want to do the paperwork" though "I don't want to clean the boodstain" is a nice twist. Followed up, naturally, with "do you understand why this wasn't a good idea?"

Story: When I was like 4 I had bangs aaaand the little Elli thought „I wanna cut my hair!“ so I took a scissor for kids… (it was green) and but my hair.

It looked so bad hahahaaha

My mum took me to a barber aaaannddd afterwards, it was still uneven hahahahahha

When I got my horrible pixie cut and hated it, I cut it down to something more like what I'd wanted with scissors. It was choppy and a disaster, I hadn't even used a mirror because I wasn't tall enough to see into the one in the loo and I had to be secretive, but it was a hell of a lot closer to what I'd wanted than the hairdresser gave me. I was content with it. I was dragged back to the hairdresser to have it fixed. Not much was possible! My mother was upset - this was just before Easter and I was supposed to be prettied up for brunch - but I was pleased.

My friend, his twin sister, and I also cut his hair once as toddlers. We didn't get as far because the three of us going missing was suspicious and we were found.

My sister has cut chunks of her hair off. The youngest used to trim his bangs on his own (though he's currently invested in growing his hair out).

Izzie (Atypical)

Izzie does, what no lesbian ever did or ever will do. She comes out to her bff who has a boyfriend, twice! First, she uses the “forehead promise” to show Casey her affection. Afterwards Casey, who obviously gets confused, ignores Izzie’s interest and makes out with Evan consciously obvious when Izzie is around.

Instead of hiding her gayness for the rest of her life, Izzie turns up at Casey’s night workout to finally confront her. Considering that Izzie has a bad relationship with her mother and only superficial friends besides Casey, she risks her only valuable relationship. Showing her love in her supposedly straight friend makes her pretty vulnerable. She really invests a lot here.

Gigi (The L Word Generation Q)

I think Gigi is the lesbian we all want to be and we all want to date. Her communication skills are phenomenal. I really hope, she and Dani will be end game, because this is the most beautiful relationship I have ever seen on the L word.

Gigi invests so much. She gives Dani tons of hints and of course Dani understands. However, she deals with her ex-relationship, her father’s legal problems and saving the company. It is not clear if Dani prefers a friendship or is ready to start a new relationship, but Gigi stays confident and straightforward.

Gigi is true to Dani about her feelings and she introduces her early to her family. This shows that Dani is not just a short adventure for her like the Throuple or Bette.

Emma Nolan (Prom)

I almost cried. What is going on with these people at Emma Nolan’s school? They throw two Proms, one for her and one for the rest of the school, because they hate lesbians. This is too tough, even for a teenager.

Emma is true about being gay while nobody else in Indiana is. Her girlfriend is deep in the closet, but still Emma comes out and fights for her right to dance with her at the Prom. She is a hero.

Laurel Hester (Freeheld)

Freeheld tells a true story from the early 2000′s. For me sometimes this time seems like yesterday, but Freeheld reminds me on why it was so tough to get out. It was really not the same time as now and a lot has evolved since then. Also the last 10 years really changed the world for gays. Laurel Hester was one of these heroes who changed the system and Julianne Moore was blessed to play her. I highly recommend this movie. Go watch it, if you haven’t yet.

Carol (Carol)

Carol is pure self-confidence! I mean, this is the 1950′s. Everyone is a homophobe and seriously, the way she flirts is so courageous. Of course this is fictional, because it never happens, even not now and not in 100 years from now. She meets someone who looks super stereotypically straight and who is engaged to some guy. Whatever, Carol is here and changes Therese’s whole life in a couple of seconds. What should I say.

Amy (Women love Women)

Amy is one of the few masculine lesbians on TV at all. It is 2021 and nothing has changed. We have Shane, we have Finley... they are both some kind of hybrid baby butch. I don’t know why movie and TV producers hesitate to show masculine lesbians, but they obviously do.

Amy lives in the 70′s and gets to know Linda in a lesbian bar. They start dating, but Linda’s friends confront Amy on her masculinity. They accuse her on not being a feminist because of her looks. Amy has to justifiy her appearance even around progressive gay women.

In my opinion, this is a unique story on TV. When I used to be part of the lesbian scene and went to parties at the weekends, I personally noticed this split of the lesbian community. I am not sure if it still exists.

Lily (Sex Education)

Tbh I am not that much interested in the story of Lily and Ola, but Lily is a true hero. I am a fan of musicals... and what did she do? I think her interpretation of Romeo and Juliet is the best musical anyone has ever directed. I would very much love to watch it live. It was the craziest party of vagina-something-alien-sex-octopus-music-pure art. I don’t know about art, but this was pure art and it was the best.

FREEHELD (2015)

We all know Elliot Page, Canada’s Trans Sweetheart, by now.  Whether we know him for his role in “Juno” (2007) or in Netflix’s “Umbrella Academy” (2019-) or something else somewhere in between, he’s been a hugely vocal member of the LGBTQ+ community since his first coming out in 2014.  

“Freeheld” is the true story of Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree.  Hester (played by Julianne Moore) is diagnosed with terminal cancer and her and Andree (Elliot Page) have to fight to have Hester’s pension benefits passed on to Andree as her domestic partner.  

Page, who also acted as a producer on the film, has stated that his own being in the closet was detrimental to the film’s progress and his own character’s development.  It’s stated that it took six years for the film to be made because it was so imperative that Page come to terms with their own sexuality first.  They stated, “It felt wildly inappropriate to be playing this character as a closeted person”.
