137: Amon Düül II // Phallus Dei

Phallus Dei Amon Düül II 1969, Liberty

We've all experienced a piece of art that made us think, "Man, x would be great if it weren't for y." That nagging sense we could really love something if only they'd fix that one throbbingly off bit. I'll confess that Amon Düül II's debut Phallus Dei can feel kinda like a spooky thriftshop landscape painting with real charm that some card has painted like Gritty into. They'll work up a good dirty prog froth for two or three minutes, as on "Luzifers Ghilom," and then everybody drops out to let vocalist Shrat do his Shaman Bobcat Goldthwaite thing before carrying on. As a listener, it's up to you to live with it or walk.

Idly wishing a piece of art were without the thing that irks you about it is natural, but as the years go by I've become more and more suspicious of the vast "fan edit" culture that digitally tweaks a finished product to better suit the desires of the fandom. This is because, despite many impassioned online defences of fanfiction, fans are typically unimaginative; babyishly loyal to their preconceived fetishes; and won't take the time to sit with something and let its eccentricities work on them till they become what’s most lovable about it. I could probably take 20 minutes to learn how to strip Shrat's most outré vocal contributions off these tracks and have a recording that scratches my itch for primitive, incantatory prog that I can Take Seriously, but that would be missing the point. The energy this era of Amon Düül II set out to capture required a goaty little man capering out front to reach the desired level of frenzy and absurdity. One (and I am speaking to myself here) must never forget that this music is the product of an arts commune who called their first utterance God's Dick. (In other words, Gritty was like, always in the painting man.)

Maybe one day, I'll warm to Shrat's work here to the point that it becomes one of the album's selling points, but in the meantime I can abide it, because on balance this is visionary improvisational music, rich in the rough-hewn textures Krautrock revivalists have never been able to replicate with modern production. As with any good pioneering record, in these crowded (violin! sitar! vibraphone! so many damn drums!), shambling grooves there is a thrill of discovery worth returning to.

2017-07-30(sun) 名古屋 Spazio RIta “Öur Likeness #5“ 高橋直康(b) + VJ YUM 一昨年の夏の名古屋での演奏。VARRISPEEDSで度々対バンしているGHILOMのドラマーで友人の近坂祐吾さんにお願いして実現した企画。近坂さんとのユニットとして出演が決まっていたYUMくんですが、当日、自分のこの演奏にも映像で参加してもらえることになり、ソロ、というか、VJ付きのソロ、というか、VJとのデュオ、を目指してやりました。自分の演奏に関しては、今ならこうするのに、とか、今も大して変わってないな、と色々と思うところはありますが、映像との共演はやってみたいんですよね。本当はYUMくんを東京に呼びたいところですが、なかなかそうも行かず...。いずれ、また。
