The Claim That Broke the Camel's Back
828 words
Summary: Frustrated CS student, Luigi Mangione, battles the maddening bureaucracy of his insurance company while juggling midterms and back pain. An underwhelming trip to Panda Express inspires him to make a change. Luigi's POV Author's Note: I could write about incompetent insurance reps all day. My whole life is working with this broken fucking system. Free Luigi.
I'm on my third cold brew of the day to get ready for this evening Machine Learning lecture. I'm wired, to say the least. I've written down a few questions I have for the professor that I'm hoping will be covered by the midterm review he's “gifting” us today.
"Good evening, folks!" he booms, addressing the class. There’s a few murmurs from some students giving a half hearted hello. "I was debating whether or not to make a midterm review for this section of the course. Considering your test scores from February..."
My phone vibrates with a 1800 number I know all too well. Dammit. I've been waiting a whole week for them to call me back about this billing mistake. I can’t believe they’re calling right now, but I have to settle this billing issue. I sigh, and claw my way out of the row of backpacks and purses, answering the phone as quietly as possible.
“Hello, this is Luigi.” I spit it out like I've said it a thousand times, flinging open the back door to the main hallway.
“Hi, Luigi, this is Tiffany calling from Blue Cross Blue Shield. I’m returning your call about a claim you want to appeal.”
Appeal? Appeal. Because nothing says "customer service" like making me clean up a mess they made and then gaslighting me about it.
I’m whisper-shouting now, rehashing for the millionth time how I never got the bill they insist they mailed to an address I haven’t lived at since MySpace peaked. Tiffany’s hitting me with the most insincere “mm-hmm”s—" i've ever heard.
“Why did you send the orthopedic bill to my parents’ house? I don’t live there,” I say, trying to keep the vein in my temple from exploding.
“Mr. Mangione, can you confirm your address for me, please?”
Confirm my address? I swear to God, these people couldn’t find their own ass with both hands and a Garmin. “Which address do you have on file for me? Because you’re sending this bill to Maryland, and I live in Pennsylvania.”
Tiffany pauses like she’s consulting the Oracle of Delphi. “Mr. Mangione, I’ll need you to confirm your mailing address in order to continue discussing your account.”
Breathe, Luigi. Breathe. “Fine. 212 Fairway Lane, Baltimore, Maryland, 20906.”
There’s the familiar clackity-clack of her keyboard, a sound I’ve come to associate with malicious incompetence. “Okay, Mr. Mangione, can I put you on hold?”
“Hold? You guys are killing me. I’m a full-time student; you called me in the middle of a lecture.”
“I’ll need to review your account information in order to transfer the case to the billing department.”
Hold on. “You’re not the billing department?”
There’s a pause so thick you could spread it on toast. “This is the claims department.”
I could scream. I peek through the window of the lecture hall door. The TA’s handing out the review sheet, and I’m out here playing phone tag with someone who doesn’t even have the power to solve this issue. “Alright, Tiffany, can you just give me the billing department’s direct line? So I can call when i'm not in class.”
She rattles off a number. I punch it into my phone notes like I’m defusing a bomb. I thank her—halfheartedly, because I was raised right- and hang up.
I'm back in my seat, having missed the professor going over test expectations. I unlock my phone and look at the number Tiffany gave me. Wait. I look at my recent call log.
No way. It’s the exact same number I’ve been calling for weeks. The member services line. An automated phone directory service that will "connect you to the best department", but only sends you in circles for hours just to disconnect you when you’re waiting to speak with a supervisor.
They’ve already threatened to send the bill to collections—a bill I’ve never even seen. They told me the procedure was 100% covered. Now I’m supposed to fork over cash I don’t have for something they said I didn’t owe in the first place.
Back at my dorm, I'm eating Panda Express alone like a fucking schmuck. The noodles taste like cardboard. I’d kill for my Ma's chicken parm. I gotta call her.
I finish up, and grab the take out bag to throw away the container.
Oh, thats right. There’s the fortune cookie. I almost chuck it in the trash, but ... maybe Lu deserves a little treat today.
I crack open the cookie, shoving one half in my mouth, and unfurl the little piece of paper.
Be the change you want to see in the world.
I immediately roll my eyes. The change I want to see is insurance companies prioritizing patients' well being over shareholder profit. If I could do anything about that, I would. Trust me, I would.
I tape the fortune to the inside of my laptop, right next to the sticker of Breloom my sister gave me, and fling myself onto my bed.
Be the change. Maybe I could.

erwin & levi
sometime after levi agreed to follow erwin after the events of acwnr is when he started realizing how little sense erwin makes. his involvement in the scouts' leadership at the time did not technically match his rank. most were still waiting for levi to fail, & so levi's performance reflected directly onto erwin's own credibility. levi felt that there was some twisted irony in his having some influence over erwin's career (albeit small), so there was a very personal & delightful thrill of insubordination in those early days.
erwin stops staying long at memorial bonfires after he is promoted to commander. he stays for the rituals, stays for the formalities, & then gives the rest of the time to the corps for mourning. levi used to prefer to spend the bonfires up high looking at it from above, & sometimes he still does. other times, he leaves with erwin after the formalities so long as they stay outside. fresh air feels like a better tribute than an immediate return to work. -- they are both symbols of authority rather than associated with the laymen. but even so, erwin always has the impression that levi trusts parts of erwin a little less when he does not dedicate the time to memorial (even while keeping a distance from the bonfires).
erwin survives ! au - similar to armin in canon, after the rumbling, erwin feels very reluctant to stay in one place. it always been a secret of his, that he would delight too much in the opportunity to be lazy, though his temperament would never allow it. however, armin's reluctance to settle stems from a type of flightiness that means he wants to see everything. it is also a type of sentencing from his role in the rumbling - the promise he made when he told eren he would accept half of the blame. erwin's reluctance is penance. his ambitious was never meant to survive the end of the world. this is a point of contention ( & loss ) between erwin & levi.
modern ! erwin 100% is the type to call levi on the phone if they're in different rooms of the same house if he's working. he's not much of a yeller - in canon verse, he projects & yells for war, but he doesn't actively yell so much on his own. levi is closer to blocking erwin on the phone every day that they know one another.
modern ! erwin is a decent gift giver -- or at least a frequent gift giver. items of food, a fucking garmin watch, new shoes. levi genuinely doesn't know what to do with the shit sometimes. not because the gifts can't go to use, but it just takes him off guard in ways that pisses him off.
armin & eren
in childhood, at least, eren has gotten far too many preaching sessions from armin about moral integrity. funnily, it rarely came as reprimand for things that eren did on his own. more often, it came every time that eren scolded armin. rarely did armin actively choose to act in his own self-defense, & sometimes that left him with bruises from childish scuffles or from decisions made with warped priorities. armin usually justifies himself by saying that he believes in doing the right thing. have you ever heard of it, eren ??? sorry that was dramatic.
armin doesn't know if eren knows all the ways that armin has been angry too. they express it differently.
armin is prone to excessively bad seasonal allergies, & honestly it pisses him the fuck off that eren never seems to get allergies. then he feels about that because eren is more prone to getting fever, which weighs him down a little worse than the allergies could.
modern ! they do game together sometimes, & they both have to pretend that they're not as competitive about it as they are.
modern ! armin walks around the apartment with airpods in when he's listening to a podcast. eren yaps at him for ten minutes sometimes before realizing that armin hasn't heard a word. sorry, fam :|
floch & eren
dead ass, floch was pro "bully eren" for years until the aftermath of shiganshina. floch mostly, like the best of them associated eren with being overly loud, ambitious, & honestly overrated. he thought that listening to eren talk was essentially like hearing a chihuahua go full force.
when it came to making plans for how the jaegerists would actualize their agenda (despite the scouts efforts), floch was primarily responsible for strategizing how they would move throughout the city & the area. he's good with maps & more familiar with the area than eren & zeke were.
floch finds it difficult to understand any attraction he has to eren - it is true that he learns to deify the symbol that eren presents himself as. at the same time, he has to strategize with him & point out his weaknesses. & so he sees some of the residual pieces of humanity in eren before he commits his worst. however, it comes at the same time that floch makes peace with his own self-loathing. it then becomes difficult to tease apart attraction, deification, humanity, & self-hatred.
modern ! while eren likes doing art more between the two of them, there are moments when floch thinks that he would like to learn more about photography. he likes taking pictures of eren. he tries to tae photos that would help promo eren's work, too, though he sends it to eren to post first.
modern ! floch thinks a lot more about social mobility than does eren. he thinks that it means there are things about him eren can't quite understand.
modern ! floch & eren listen to soundcloud together.
bertolt & reiner
after they infiltrated shiganshina, they did field work with survivors of the fall of the walls. they never discussed the possibility of trying to abandon marley's cause. even if they trusted each other, they did not trust each other well enough to entertain the idea of treason. furthermore, guilt made it difficult to imagine being anything but a weapon.
bertolt survives ! after the rumbling, bertolt doesn't want to travel. he struggles with the idea of working as a peace ambassador because it feels too public, too friendly, & too much of a farce when he feels as though he has been made to play two sides. of course, this makes him very useful as an ambassador. he would rather train as a medic or else work administrative places, but he feels that he might be a less benevolent person than he should want to be. reiner carries a lot of guilt & feels compelled to travel as an active ambassador. they struggle to come to a decision, between the two of them.
modern ! bertolt is the worst person to get dinner with from a restaurant. he will not say what he wants to eat because he's not picky. reiner mentions one food? 100% that sounds great. or how about this food? 100% that sounds great. bertolt is equally invested in all meal opportunities.
modern ! reiner is passenger princess. bertolt enjoys it, in part because he likes driving. reiner has a day every three months where he sort of blusters about wanting to drive, but otherwise likes watching bertolt drive.
tsukishima & kuroo
kuroo showed up at the museum one day to ask for a tour when tsukishima was scheduled to give tours. it was supposed to be a romantic gesture, probably, except tsukishima was already booked for a summer camp. so kuroo was just kinda there.
when kageyama & tsukishima traveled to brazil to visit hinata, tsukishima got atrociously sunburned. hinata took it upon himself to send a picture to kuroo of the sunburn (which impressively was interrupted by a handprint where sunscreen hadn't washed off). kuroo was appropriately horrified by the burn but delighted by the fact that hinata sent it to him. tsukishima refuses to explain why hinata sent it to kuroo - partly out of pride, & partly because he just suspects it was a drunken decision.
tsukishima thinks he's being ironically funny when he pesters kuroo to wear his jersey. however, kuroo should technically not wear any team's jersey or should technically wear all teams' jerseys. it makes tsukishima feel a little competitive.
akiteru met kuroo on accident & without kei's permission. when kei met kuroo's sister, it was a much more intentional affair.
at one point, they switched from watching movies in english to watching american reality tv shows. tsukishima was overly invested, & kuroo was mildly horrified.
miscellaneous : bonus !
uri & kuchel are in frequent correspondence with one another when it comes to exchanging photos of levi. most of these photos levi does not know exist.
levi would rather die than be nosy in uri & kenny's medicine cabinet.
porco has purposefully locked reiner out of reiner's own phone. it seemed funny at the time.
connie is accidentally the loudest fucking houseguest when he stays overnight at eren's place.
reiner & armin genuinely cannot decide whether they should tell eren that they hooked up. it shouldn't be the end of the world if they told him, but what if?

I’d like to have a look at alien design in the Green Lantern mythos over time. There’s a trend towards anthropomorphism that runs in opposition to the original way of thinking about biological diversity here.
The earliest alien GLs are clearly patterned after the same formula. Each comes from a planet where x thing became the predominant lifeform. This leads to an immediate enormous biological diversity within the corps members we’re introduced to.
Tumblr media
(GL 1960 #9 )
Later installments of the mythos tend more towards GLs that embody archetypes. Monks, warriors, princesses, and doctors all make additions to the corps. This is an easy short hand to characterization, and lends itself well towards one-shots and short-term dynamics.
However, it also opens the door to that oh-so-common science fiction conceit: all the aliens look like human beings. In some ways, the amount of anthropomorphism within the corps depends on the artist. But for the most part, it’s the anthropomorphic characters that get panel time. Either model can be fun, but there is one potential pitfall.
One of the repeated characteristics of the corps is its diversity. In the early days this was expressed by a lack of commonality between the GLs. They had nothing in common but their cause.
Tumblr media
(GL 1960 #127)
More recently, Goeff puts a similar idea into words with ‘there’s not a more diverse group in existence…’ And this is literal - because the rings do select purely on merit which any sentient being might have (except when you’re Hal or Guy or Iolande or Arisia maybe or Sinestro if you like that version of his origin which you shouldn’t, in which case proximity or nepotism may have something to do with it)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GL 2005 #21)
Too many repeated visual elements, when your written description is pure diversity, contradicts itself.
Reducing variety in biology is part of a shift towards reduced variety generally. This ties back into my previous post about how the corps becomes increasingly structured over the course of Hal’s career. A lot of Green Lanterns these days are inter-changeable in the way they respond to situations, in their opinions, perspectives and so forth. Building literal physical differences between them is one way of combating same-ness. The archetype thing would help too.

(GL 2021 #2)
Lately I’ve been kicking around this idea that the best way to judge superhero material (mostly the big two and mostly dc) is to evaluate how well a creative team is able to engage with and take advantage of the unique premise of the character or mythos they’re working with. (this is my big take on the totally fearless thing, but that’s a different post) Too much reworking results in something unrecognizable, while being too studious (NEVEr Fails!) could potentially result in something narratively incomprehensible.
TLDR: more bizarre looking gls pleeeease
anyway here's a list of the (living) GLs listed in the Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Secret files (with the acknowledgement that it's not up to date) I've highlighted the ones that I can think of having done something, which is not totally reliable, but gives an initial indication of importance rather than just existence. I count 50 aliens, and 69 anthros - with 13 aliens of significance and 29 anthros
Aliens: norchavious, umitu, shorm, adsim, leezle pon, relok hag, dkrtzy RRR, Markot five, RRU-9-2, ash-pak, glif, volk, olapet, charqwep, rees-van, voz, morro, kilowog, turytt, rot lop fan, brokk, b'dg, the collective, penelops, t-cher, gk'd, chaselon, salaak, lin canar, krydel-4, oliversity, el'qa squa zreenah, perdoo, mogo, bzzd, talmadge, isamot kol, skirl, m'dahna, tomar-tu, g'hu, stel, lok neboora, amanita, skyrd, gpaak, garmin vid, palaqua, cimfet tau, zghithii,
Anthros: Matto and Amnee Pree, Raker and Kraken, lysandra, spol, tomy-fai, varix, sendrina, bruun, laira, ghr'll and xylpth, KT21, Alia, procanon kaa, vode-m, graf toren, arx, medphyll, ash, r'amey holl, von daggle, saarek, krista x, horaq nnot, aa, brik, tuebeen, taa, adam, sir deeter, okonoko, grumb, remnant nod, aori strah, sheriff mardin, boodikka, soranik, iolande, kaylark, sodam yat, meadlux, wissen, opto309v, symon terrynce, vath sarn, tagort, venizz, dalor, hal, john, guy, kyle, arisia, gretti, green man, harvid, bareer wot, lan dibbux, vandor, penn maricc, shilandra thane, droxelle, greet, lashorr, torquemada, morro
(oops the post is over but I have to add that the new corps are generally more diverse but that's another topic!)

The Rise of Smartwatches for Women: Empowering Technology on Your Wrist
In recent years, smartwatches have evolved from mere technological novelties to essential tools that enhance everyday life. While early designs often catered primarily to men, the market has seen a significant shift towards creating smartwatches specifically for women. These devices combine style, functionality, and health tracking, making them a popular choice among modern women. This article explores the features, benefits, and top models of smart watch women.
The Evolution of Smartwatches for Women
The early iterations of smartwatches often overlooked the preferences of female users, focusing instead on bulky designs and a limited color palette. However, as the demand for wearable technology grew, manufacturers began to recognize the need for stylish, lightweight, and functional options for women. Today's smartwatches come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, often incorporating feminine designs that appeal to diverse tastes.
Key Features of Women’s Smartwatches
Health and Fitness Tracking: Most women’s smartwatches come equipped with comprehensive health tracking features, including heart rate monitoring, sleep analysis, menstrual cycle tracking, and fitness activity tracking. These tools empower women to take control of their health and wellness.
Customization and Personalization: Many smartwatches now offer customizable watch faces, bands, and widgets, allowing women to express their personal style. Whether you prefer a sporty look or a more elegant design, there are options to match any outfit or occasion.
Smart Notifications: Stay connected without constantly checking your phone. Women’s smartwatches provide notifications for calls, texts, emails, and social media, allowing for seamless communication on the go.
GPS and Navigation: For those who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking or running, GPS functionality is invaluable. It enables accurate tracking of routes and distances, helping women maintain their fitness goals.
Long Battery Life: With busy schedules, women need devices that can keep up. Many smartwatches now boast extended battery life, reducing the need for frequent charging and allowing users to focus on their day.
Benefits of Smartwatches for Women
Empowerment through Technology: Smartwatches can help women feel more empowered and informed about their health and daily activities. With features that promote wellness, they encourage users to take charge of their lifestyle choices.
Convenience and Efficiency: Smartwatches streamline everyday tasks, such as checking the weather, managing calendars, and tracking fitness goals. This efficiency is particularly beneficial for women balancing multiple responsibilities, from work to family to personal interests.

Buying beautiful and well-made watches.
In a world where everything is digital and technology is changing quickly, the simple wristwatch is still a sign of timekeeping, style, and workmanship. Watches are more than just a way to tell time.
They have gone beyond their practical purpose to become stylish accessories that show off a person's style, have historical importance, and were made with great care. From old mechanical wonders to high-tech smartwatches, these Automatic Watches continue to fascinate fans and collectors, closing the gap between the old and the new.
Tumblr media
A Snippet of History
Time-telling devices that could be carried around, like sundials and early mechanical clocks, came into use in the 15th century. Seiko Watches for Sale have reasonable prices. This is when watches were first made. As technology bettered, fund watches came more popular in the 17th century, and wristwatches were first used by dogfaces in the service in the late 19th century. But wristwatches did not come a standard part of men's and women's dress until the early 1900s. This helped to cement their place in popular culture. Many people Buy Seiko Watches.
Making things and making designs
One of the most interesting things about watches is the careful work that goes into making them. Traditional Seiko Watches, which are often called "analog watches," are works of art. They have complicated gears made up of hundreds of tiny parts that work together to measure time accurately. Expert watchmakers spend years learning their craft and making pieces that, with the right care, can last for generations. Vostok Watches Usa are the best.
The way a watch is made is an opportunity for art. Vostok Europe Watches come in a wide range of styles to fit everyone's tastes. Some are simple and elegant, while others have complicated faces with a lot of "complications," which are extra features like moon phases, chronographs, and tourbillons. Luxury brands are known for paying close attention to detail and making Special Edition Watches that are not only accurate timepieces but also beautiful works of art.
Technology meets new ideas
Even though watchmaking is still based on traditional skill, it has not been immune to modern changes. Best Luxury Chronograph Watches can be easily found. In recent times, watches has added a new way to keep track of time. These digital sensations look like traditional watches but have ultramodern features that let people track their health, get cautions, and indeed make phone calls right from their wrists. Apple, Samsung, and Garmin were the first companies to make smartwatches. They made them for tech- smart people who want to use technology in their diurnal lives without noticing it.
Tumblr media
In a time when things change quickly, European Watches remind us of the beauty of custom and the art of making things with care. From the intricate gears of a mechanical movement to the sleek interface of a smartwatch, these watches go beyond their useful purpose to become symbols of style, innovation, and personal expression. There are a lot of European Watch Brands. As we keep moving forward into a world that is more and more digital, Traser Watches tell us to stop, enjoy the passing of time, and wear a piece of history and art on our wrists.

I am not familiar with Around the World (or if you're making a joke)? If it's a GPS I have to say I'm pretty okay with my 10-year-old Garmin, except for her romantic fixation on I-94. (I missed whatever point I could turn off to 294 instead, and I'm limited in how much alternative navigation I can do while behind the wheel of a moving vehicle!)
Audiobook-wise, my rapid-fire reviews of all 5 audiobooks I listened to on this trip (I finished the first 2 and got through parts of the rest):
Between You and Me, Susan Wiggs: Romance between a surgeon and an Amish farmer, but I don't think it's actually part of the genre of "Amish Romance" (this is probably a compliment to Wiggs' novel). *Slaps hood of CD book case* You can fit so many Issues into this baby! (This is definitely a compliment to Wiggs' novel.) I especially appreciated the exploration of the hero's nephew and niece as characters as they faced their own challenges navigating a new disability, culture clash, and coming-of-age; plus the heroine's struggle to break free of her parents' expectations (also there's a wonderfully satisfying scene where she gets a harassing creep's hair set on fire with a tiki torch!); and the hero's navigation of the abuse that simmers under the surface of Amish communities. The romance is sweet, sexy, and convincing. I do think there might have been a bit too many Issues or Events for them all to receive a satisfying treatment, and the hero sometimes wound up being Default Romance Hero Guy instead of the much more interesting Amish man navigating his particular personal history (most egregious: he's a first-timer at sex -- way cool! -- but very, very good at it, and all we get to explain this is him saying he's grown up on a farm. I don't think you learn cunnilingus from watching farm animals...)
Woman with a Secret, Sophie Hannah: A thriller, part of a series following a married detective couple. I hadn't read earlier books in the series, but the characters are well-defined and easy to keep track of. At the same time, the detective couple only have about half the page count, with victims and potential suspects taking up the other half--which is a solid choice, as they're all very interesting! Often in a "watching a car crash" way. I'm not sure how much I can say without spoilers, but it's refreshing to read a story where you care about the outcome without having to approve of everything each character is doing, and my head spun over several parts of this book for how nonromantic they are about love and marriage. In particular, the central couple has a convincingly solid marriage despite being kinda fucked-up (the wife has the thought that she wished she loved her husband less so she could have an affair, not with anyone in particular but just as an expression of independence--this comes off completely nonmalicious in context!--while the husband has some theories of How Couples Work that he uses to investigate the case and winds up hurting his wife's feelings when he uses her as a sounding board for them). Other couples range from "Wow that's capital-R romantic, you should never have been introduced to each other and once you were we should have sequestered you for society's protection" to "that's textbook abuse" (and Hannah knows it). I don't know if the characters are always 'realistic' but they always make sense, following certain extreme forms of logic, in a way that will have you thinking "there but for the grace of god go I" about things you would never actually do. My minor but distinct qualms are 1. The murder victim, an acerbic opinion columnist, sometimes goes on a bit long in his columns--an excruciating bit quoted an entire Twitter exchange, in a way that provided the reader with clues to understand the mystery but reminded me too much of time wasted on social media, and if I read it on paper rather than in audio I'd have started skimming and 2. The male narrator sometimes got a bit loud, and the female narrator had some uncontrolled mouth sounds, though both of them did an excellent job overall, emoting to fit the extreme scale of some scenes without chewing the scenery, distinguishing many different characters, and doing the very subtle and by no means easy job of making clear when a character is speaking aloud vs when they're doing italicized inner monologue (I would not know where to begin!).
Little Women, Louisa May Alcott: read by Kate Reading, who is an excellent choice not only for her surname. She brings delightful liveliness and, where appropriate, gentle irony that means I got so much more out of this audiobook format than I would have reading the book on my own. Kind of like Moby Dick, nobody told me this 19th century literature would be funny! Of course, Little Women is written to hold young readers' attention--including while being read aloud, by one family member to the rest--so in hindsight this shouldn't be surprising! I was suspicious of Marmie for the first few chapters, where she delivers a few too many moral lessons, but then this book turned out to be about, among other things, the experience of learning as you grow up that your parents are mortal figures with flaws and opinions of their own. Alcott is overall pretty good at giving a moral but then undercutting an over-harsh application of it (e.g. I thought it was unfair when Baer was so harsh on Jo writing sensation literature, but the bit where Jo overcorrects to write mawkish edifying literature instead was so funny I forgave everything). I HAVEN'T REACHED THE END YET so no spoilers but, Jo is our transmasc king/monarch and I ship Jo/Laurie not only for the yaoi factor but mostly because I really like friends-to-lovers ships. (The scene where Laurie comforts Jo during Beth's illness has a place in my heart forever.) But I shipped them more in Part I than in Part II, as perhaps they did themselves. We'll see what happens in the last few chapters!
Unsheltered, Barbara Kingsolver: Read by the author, which in this case wasn't disastrous. I'm reminded of Louise Erdrich narrating her own books--she and Kingsolver seem to have similar styles vis a vis narration and even similar voices. The best part is you know each sentence is being read as the author intended! Kingsolver is perhaps a bit too find of using sibilants, though, at least for my misophoniac ears. I haven't got too far into this one but it's an interesting parallel-timeline story of a family moving into a collapsing house and the history of the house (in the earlier timeline, it is also collapsing) with lots of Current Events thrown in (in the earlier timeline, the Current Event is Darwin). There was a family dinner scene that once again reminded me too much of time wasted on social media, but it's mostly held my attention with the twin mysteries of "What the heck happened to this house?" and "How are these folks going to get out of this scrape?" Kingsolver has sharp and all-too-accurate observations of human frustrations and foibles, including a vivid bit about being stuck in traffic on a bridge that I listened to while...you guessed it...
Imaginary Friend, Steven Chobsky: This horror novel may be way too full of sibilants (one of the key monsters is a 'hissing woman') for a misophoniac to listen to all 24 hours of it in audiobook. But the 3 disks I listened to held my attention, and I don't think I'll be looking at cloud shapes the same way for a while. Luckily my library has text formats of it available so whatever happens I will get to the end--I certainly don't want to leave myself in suspense! I will say, I'm not sure about the pacing: the 3 disks I listened to moved at a good clip (something was always happening, and someone was almost always in trouble, minor or major, so it kept my attention) but given that clip and what I understand of the story's timeline ("a little boy has to build a treehouse in the strange woods by Christmas or something terrible will happen"), I'm not sure how there's over 20 hours here. Little Women is only 18 hours and it spans years! I assume I'm going to meet more characters and side plots (not a bad thing by any means, all the characters have been interesting in some way so far) or the timeline is going to get weirder than I think. -Honestly, if any of these books was going to be 700 pages, I think Wiggs' could have been that, to develop some of those Issues more (and dig into the hero's erotic debut...for purely literary reasons, of course *tugs on collar*).
It took me longer to get through Chicago at rush hour than it did to drive across Ohio. And Indiana. Combined. Thank goodness for fun audiobooks.
Anyway I booted up my computer today to see 121 emails. I'm going on an unsubscribe spree.
