Market Recap: Dow Jones Gains, S&P 500 Holds Steady, NASDAQ Edges Lower

In the ever-fluctuating landscape of the stock market, today's trading session saw a mixed bag of results, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average leading the charge with a 0.2% rise, marking a gain of 78 points. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 maintained relative stability, experiencing a marginal decline of 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite edged lower by 0.1%.
The Dow Jones, a benchmark index known for its representation of 30 significant stocks across various sectors, demonstrated resilience as it climbed modestly, buoyed by optimism in certain key industries. Investors found solace in the steady progress of companies within sectors such as industrials and financials, contributing to the index's upward trajectory.
Conversely, the broader market sentiment, as reflected by the S&P 500, exhibited a more subdued tone, hovering near its previous close. While certain sectors displayed strength, others faced headwinds, resulting in a balanced performance overall. This nuanced movement underscores the intricate interplay of factors influencing investor sentiment, ranging from economic data releases to geopolitical developments.
Amidst this backdrop, the NASDAQ Composite experienced a slight setback, dipping by 0.1% during today's trading session. This decline comes amidst ongoing concerns surrounding inflationary pressures and the potential impact on high-growth technology stocks, which often populate the NASDAQ index.
As investors navigate through a landscape marked by both opportunities and challenges, it becomes imperative to adopt a diversified approach and remain vigilant in assessing market dynamics. While certain sectors may outperform in the short term, maintaining a long-term perspective is essential in achieving sustainable investment outcomes.
Looking ahead, market participants will continue to monitor key economic indicators, corporate earnings reports, and geopolitical developments for insights into future market movements. In a market characterized by its dynamism and unpredictability, adaptability and informed decision-making remain paramount for investors seeking to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the stock market.

i feel like im not making any sense but does anyone else feel like there are stories that let u run with them and ones that spell everything out for you
#im reading that post that says artists are directors of audience reaction and not its dictator:#'you cannot guarantee that everyone viewing your work will react as you are trying t make them react. a good artist knows that this is what#allows work to breath. by definition you cannot have art where the viewer brings nothing to the table ... this is why you have to let go of#the urge to plainly state in text exactly how you think the work should be interpreted ... its better to be misinterpreted sometimes than#to talk down to your audience. you wont even gain any control that way; people will still develop their opinions no matter what you do#im thinking abt this again cuz i was thinking maybe the thing that lets adventure time work so well the way it does is cuz it doesnt#take itself too seriously that it gives the audience enough room to fuck with subtext and then fuck with them back yknow. i think it was#mentioned somewhere that they werent even planning to run with the postapocalyptic elements that are hinted in the show but changed their#mind after the one off with the frozen businessmen and dominoed into marcy and simons backstory. on the other side there are stories that#explain too much to let the story speak for itself and i think it ends up having to do more with the crew trying to lead ppl in a certain#direction than expand on what they have and i see a lot of this with miraculous. like when interviews and tweets are used as word of god in#arguments and it becomes a little stifling to play around with it knowing the creator can just interject. u can say its the crews effort to#engage with its audience but it feels more like micromanaging. and none of this is to say there ISNT room for stories that spell things out#theyre just suited for different things. if sesame street tried abstract approaches to themes and nuance itd be counterproductive#a lot of things fly over my head so i need help picking things apart to get it- but it doesnt have to be from the story itself. ive picked#picked up or built on my own interpretations listening to other ppl share their thoughts which creates conversation around the same thing#sometimes stories will spell things out for you without being so obvious abt it that it feels like its woven into the text. my fav example#for this might be ATLA using younger characters as its main cast but instead of feeling like its dumbed down for kids to understand why war#is bad its framed from a childs point of view so younger audiences can pick up on it by relating to the characters. maybe an 8 year old#wont get how geopolitics works but at least they get 'hey the world is a little more complicated than everyone vs. fire nation'. same for#steven universe bc its like theyre trying to describe and put feelings into words that kids might not have so they have smth to start with#especially with the metaphors around relationships bc even if it looks unfamiliar as a kid now maybe the hope is for it to be smth you can#look back to. thats why it feels like these shows grew up with me.. instead of saving difficult topics for 'when im ready for it'#as if its preparing me for high school it gave me smth to turn in my hands and revisit again and again as i grow. stories that never#treated u as dumb all along. just someone who could learn and come back to it as many times as u need to. i loved SU for the longest time#but i felt guilty for enjoying it hearing the way ppl bash it. bc i was a kid and thought other ppl understood it better than me and made#feel bad for leaning into the message of paying forward kindness and not questioning why steven didnt punish the diamonds or hold them#accountable. but im rewatching it now and going oh. i still love this show and what it was trying to teach me#yapping#diary

Girl help why is a fantasy setting using modern American gender terminology
They could've already bounced off of the existing term aqun-athlok and show the gender culture of the North largely adopting Qunari concepts as part of cultural exchange resulting from the literal hundreds of years of war with the Qun. The only openly transgender characters we know of are from Tevinter anyway! They already wanted to show the Qun in a more positive light in Veilguard, having Thedosian queer culture be primarily influenced by the Qun would be a great way to do exactly that
#dragon age#veilguard spoilers#dragon age taash#dragon age lore#dragon age the veilguard#it just really feels a bit like they just take the modern real world (american) gender terminology for granted#most of the terms are very recent too. we didn't have most of these terms until only the past century or not even that#not to mention some cultures in the world have their own terms and concepts regarding gender. it's not universal#and having the queer culture of Thedas be tied with the other geopolitical issues would be interesting af too#something I and many other queer people living outside the US would relate to would be having to grapple with the#fact that the only way to describe your lived personal experience is by using the language of what's essentially the colonizers#because your country never developed any of your own. it's the dilemma between resisting the pressure on your culture and being able to#express your identity. feeling like accepting yourself as queer is losing some of your ties with your home#of course it would not be the exact same in Thedas since the Qun doesn't have the same chokehold on global culture as the US does#but like you get it. there is stuff to be done with this#but the way this codex entry is written feels a lot like the devs trying to educate players on real world queer people#and doing frankly a very bad job at it

The Dalai Lama's statement comforted his followers, while sending a message to Beijing
To outsiders, the Dalai Lama affirming that someone will take his place when he dies might have felt like a mere confirmation of the status quo.
He is the 14th Dalai Lama — of course, there will be a 15th.
But that assumption misses the point, as well as the significance of his statement.
The Dalai Lama's statement comforted millions of followers while also sending a message to political forces in Beijing that are expected to try and meddle with his succession.
He also sent a message to the world: Tibet's struggle for identity is not over.

Guardian short video: Dalai Lama outlines process for choosing his successor after he dies [Reuters - 2 July 2025 / 2mins.+9secs.]:
The Dalai Lama says there will be search for his successor after his death, ending years of speculation.
The spiritual leader has said the centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist institution will continue after his death, ending years of speculation after he previously suggested he might be the last person to hold the role. In a video broadcast before his 90th birthday on Sunday, he said 'all the followers have unanimously said that the reincarnation should continue'.

The Dalai Lama aged six. He was born Lhamo Dhondup in 1935 to a family of buckwheat and barley farmers in what is now the northwestern Chinese province of Qinghai. At the age of two, he was deemed by a search party to be the 14th reincarnation of Tibet’s spiritual and temporal leader after identifying several of his predecessor’s possessions.

Just speaking this into existence but the term "3rd World Country" is an outdated term born during the Cold War and with distinct Imperialist/Colonialist connotations; it is highly discouraged already in academic discourses and it would be best to drop it altogether in news outlets and daily life.
There are more suited options, although not perfect and all-encopassing, some arguably can still hold negative connotations, but you can use them to your discretion and sensibility:
Developing Countries; Global South; LICs & MICs (Low & Middle-income Countries); Majority World.

BRICS SIGNS DEVELOPMENT DEAL BETWEEN EGYPT AND THE UNITED ARAB EMERATES
A new development deal has been signed between the United Arab Emirates and Egypt in a partnership which will see Egypt inject $35 Billion for the UAE to develop the Egyptian town of Ras el-Hekma on the country's northern Mediterranean coast.
BRICS countries have been forging several new partnerships, with the latest deal expected to see Egypt shelling out $15 Billion in next week, and another $20 Billion over the next two months, to see the UAE develop the Egyptian town of Ras el-Hekma to International standards equivalent to what the UAE has used to develop several cities in its own territory.
BRICS supporters are hailing the new deal as a sea-change, expected to usher in a new era of bilateral trade and development projects using local currencies, which they say could see the US Dollar's trade dominance and status as the world's reserve currency to diminish in the coming years.
The new development project will see the UAE develop Egypt's coastal town of Ras el-Hekma to the same standards the UAE has used on its own cities, which is expected to change the way the town looks and operates under over the coming years.

My parent’s home of 30+ years was just trashed by a tornado. There was no tornado warning. And why would there be? There’s never been a tornado in those parts in living memory. People are dead, homes are destroyed, lives are destroyed. It happened in seconds. How are we supposed to prepare for things we didn’t even know were possible?
My kid sister is a climate scientist. Shit is getting real out here. The devastation wrought on island nations. The flood events that should be once in lifetime, but happen again and again. The way cyclones have spread out of the equatorial formation zone owing to warmer ocean temperatures. The heat waves are starting to kill people en masse. Dozens of poll workers just died in the Indian elections. Dozens. There’s also extended droughts, water scarcity, food scarcity from people switching to drought resistant crops that feed animals but not humans, fires, desertification…
Meanwhile countries that created all the emissions and made bank while doing so are telling poorer nations that they can’t pursue economic growth in the same way. Ok, then you make up the economic shortfall in our growth. Give us the green tech for free. Invest here. Make it possible. When the sea swallows an island, you take that population in and you set them up to thrive in your borders.
We had to endure colonial extraction of resources, under industrialisation, slavery and indenture, famine and malnutrition, family separation and repression of religion and culture. You turned any strength we had into a weakness to better facilitate your control over us. Now when we try to feed ourselves you want to talk emissions? We know what climate change is. We know what air pollution is, acid rain, the ozone layer, declining biodiversity. We’re not ignorant. We just also know what everyday starvation is. Stop punishing us for catering to people’s immediate needs, when the emissions that got us here were from the developed world anyway, not us.
white americans when you tell them that the idea of climate change as an impending disaster is a reductive first world perspective because it’s a tangible reality for many in the global south already:
#thanks op#i’m tired too#south africa#you wanna know something gross?#a bunch of developed nations are jockeying to come out on top of the emerging conditions of climate change#part of national self interest and new geopolitics#is who will win climate change#this planet killing phenomenon they caused#the global south#climate change#extreme weather#extreme weather events#tornado#water scarcity#food scarcity#drought#climate change politics#politics#geopolitics#not survive it but actually leverage it to their advantage#climate policy#climate justice

Listen: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5My9FI6WfUGrOPf57D3RTv "## The Sustainable Development Goals: A Decade of Disappointment Ten years ago, the world stood together in a moment of hope and ambition as the United Nations unveiled its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—a comprehensive set of 17 objectives designed to eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. It was a bold promise, a clarion call to nations to strive for a better future. But here we are, a decade later, and the reality is stark: the majority of those goals are slipping through our fingers. What went wrong? And what implications does the Trump administration’s retreat from international development hold for the global landscape? Let’s be clear: the ambitious ideals of the SDGs were always going to face hurdles, but the scale of the challenges is now glaring. Political turmoil, economic upheaval, and the COVID-19 pandemic have laid bare the vulnerabilities and inequities that threaten to derail progress. The pandemic didn’t just halt advancements; it reversed hard-fought gains in health, education, and social equity. Nations that were on track to improve their standings found themselves scrambling just to maintain the status quo, let alone leap forward. And then there’s the political context. The Trump administration’s isolationist policies and unilateralism sent shockwaves through international development efforts. Funding for foreign aid and global initiatives plummeted, undermining the collaborative framework essential for tackling global challenges. The “America First” ideology not only stifled U.S. leadership but also emboldened others with far less altruistic views on global cooperation. With partners in retreat, the collective push towards the SDGs weakened significantly. What does this mean for us, the citizens of a connected globe? It’s an urgent wake-up call. The consequences of our stagnation are staggering—rising inequality, climate disasters, and societal instability are not just headlines; they’re our new reality. If we’re to reclaim the ambition that birthed the SDGs, we need to ignite a renewed commitment to strengthening international alliances and prioritizing sustainable initiatives. It’s time for a reinvigorated discussion on international development. We must hold our leaders accountable and demand they recognize the urgency of the path to 2030. It’s not just about targets and timelines; these goals represent a lifeline for millions around the world. As we prepare to navigate these tumultuous waters, it's also essential for organizations and individuals alike to get ready to pitch in. If you believe in the power of collective action and the importance of sustainable development, consider supporting initiatives that aim to reverse the setbacks we’ve faced. Together, we can turn this ship around. On a final note, if you’re a company looking to make a meaningful impact, Ones and Tooze is seeking a lead sponsor for our podcast, which tackles these vital issues week after week. Your support could play a pivotal role in fostering discussions that matter and driving change where it’s needed. For partnership opportunities, reach out to [email protected]. Brought to you by betterhelp.com/onestooze, let’s embark on this journey of accountability and action together. The future is in our hands—let’s seize it before it slips away."

The New Non-Aligned Movement – Is Global South Redefining Neutrality?
Global South countries are stepping up to redefine what it means to be neutral in a world rife with polarizing power struggles. He, she, and they are examining the implications of this new Non-Aligned Movement, aiming to carve out a space for cooperation without yielding to dominance from the Global North. By shifting their focus to sustainable development and collective progress, these nations are not just reacting; they are actively reshaping global narratives and alliances. The stakes are high, and the potential is enormous—this is a movement worth watching closely.

Conclusion
The Evolution of the Non-Aligned Movement: A Historical Perspective
Tracing the Origins of Non-Alignment
The concept of non-alignment can be traced back to the post-World War II era, when numerous newly independent nations emerged, eager to assert their sovereignty amidst the growing tensions of the Cold War. Visionaries like India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Egypt’s President Gamal Abdel Nasser, and Yugoslavia’s Josip Broz Tito became the pioneering architects of a movement that sought a third way—neither aligning with the capitalist West nor the communist East. They envisioned a platform where countries could voice their concerns over imperialism, colonialism, and the arms race without surrendering their independence to superpowers. The 1955 Bandung Conference, where 29 Asian and African states convened, marked a pivotal moment in this journey, influencing the philosophical foundations of the movement.
As these leaders recognized the shared struggles against colonialism and economic repression, they laid down the core principles that would guide non-aligned nations: mutual respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and the pursuit of peaceful coexistence. This collective identity was vital for nations seeking a voice on the global stage, especially as many grappled with internal divisions and external pressures. Heavily influenced by the realities of their socio-political landscapes, these African and Asian leaders successfully challenged the binary nature of the international system during a time fraught with geopolitical tension.
Key Milestones and Shifts in the Movement
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) solidified its relevance with strategic milestones, adapting to global changes over decades. The formation of the movement was officially recognized in 1961 during the first summit in Belgrade, bringing together 25 nations committed to rejecting both superpower blocs. Over the years, additional summits have served as platforms for articulating a unified stance on issues like disarmament, economic development, and social justice. For instance, the 1973 conference in Algiers underscored the importance of economic self-reliance and highlighted the necessity of North-South dialogue, a chilling reminder of the disparities that persisted even in a supposedly interconnected world.
As the Cold War reached its climax, the NAM evolved beyond mere neutrality. In various assembly sessions, participants made it clear they would not only advocate for peace but also champion economic justice and development, ceasing to accept global imbalances. In the late 1980s and early 90s, the dissolution of the Soviet Union brought about a need to redefine roles within the movement. Emerging nations started to emphasize trade partnerships and regional solidarity over the binary model of the Cold War, opening up dialogue with both Western and Eastern entities. Today, as the complexities of global geopolitics shift again, NAM faces the challenge of remaining relevant while responding to new forces like climate change and technological disparities, all while maintaining their foundational commitment to non-alignment.
The historical and ideological evolution of the Non-Aligned Movement reveals a tapestry of resilience and adaptability in response to an ever-changing geopolitical landscape. Continued engagement with both established powers and emerging economies allows NAM to navigate contemporary challenges while amplifying the collective voice of the Global South. Shedding its past perceptions of irrelevance, it is clear that NAM remains a significant player in redefining not just neutrality, but the future of international relations underpinned by equality and cooperation.

From a 🍓 on X:
“ just got off a 4 hour call with sources inside chinese deepseek labs and holy shit we are so fucking behind it's not even funny anymore. deepseek r2 isn't just an incremental improvement it's a completely different species of intelligence operating on principles nobody in the west has even theorized yet.
they've abandoned transformer architectures entirely for something they're calling "recursive cognition lattices" that scale in dimensions our math doesn't even have good notation for. compute efficiency gains that violate what we thought were fundamental limits. like 400x improvement in reasoning per teraflop. not 4x. not 40x. 400 fucking x. our benchmarks are literally meaningless now.
the scariest part isn't the raw capability but how it's developing novel mathematical frameworks on the fly to solve problems. researchers give it questions and it invents entirely new branches of mathematics to answer them. one physicist showed it a problem he'd been stuck on for 15 years and it solved it in seconds with notation nobody recognized. took three days to translate its solution back into standard mathematics.
saw demo videos that can't possibly be real except multiple independent sources confirming. r2 designed and simulated a room temperature superconductor from first principles in under an hour. complete with fabrication methods using existing technology. they've already produced samples in beijing labs. western physics community hasn't even caught up to the theoretical possibility.
their integration with biological systems is the real nightmare fuel. two-way neural interfaces that make neuralink look like a children's toy. direct cognitive enhancement already in human trials with volunteers showing 30-40% gains in problem-solving capability. that's not science fiction that's happening right fucking now in shenzhen while we debate about chatbot regulations.
deepseek isn't even their most advanced system. that's just what they're showing publicly. the real bleeding edge is happening in military applications. system-level understanding of geopolitics that can predict policy shifts before the policymakers themselves know what decisions they'll make. they're already using it to reshape global trade flows so subtly nobody's noticed yet.
america is still treating this like a normal technology race while china understands it's an extinction-level transformation of civilization. they're integrating these systems into governance infrastructure at every level while we argue about prompt engineering and banning chatbots in schools. it's like watching a nuclear power race where one side is debating the ethics of gunpowder.
our intelligence community is fucking panicking behind closed doors. three separate agencies have submitted classified assessments that all reach the same conclusion: we've got months not years before the capability gap becomes unbridgeable. some analysts saying it already happened and we just don't know it yet.
the recursive self-improvement capabilities are accelerating beyond all models. deepseek r2 basically wrote r3 which is currently training and early benchmarks suggest it's to r2 what r2 was to anything we've built in the west. exponential curves stacked on exponential curves.
if america doesn't wake the fuck up and treat this like the existential priority it is we're looking at a future where technological supremacy isn't just shifted it's permanently lost. the world 12 months from now won't just have different geopolitical power dynamics it'll operate on fundamentally different rules of reality. “
