I'm grateful for that every day, and I never take it for granted. Whatever the 1% consists of, I acknowledge it's a vanishing fraction of the response. The last thing I want to be is a sour grape.

I acknowledge I'm a little sensitive to criticism on fanfic, mostly because it's supposed to be my fun, no-pressure, no-bad-vibes hobby, and I've had the occasional self-critical spirals that stop me from writing. But that's no one's problem but mine. Also, it's the Internet. People will say what they think. That's the bug, and that's the feature. I've been around long enough to acquire a decently thick skin. I just don't really want to use it in this particular forum, for this particular thing.

As the weeks went on, Roach folded research and brainstorming into his days. He’d asked Lucius to quietly pass along any specific art inspiration only, as a jumping off point. He watched several episodes of some godawful Food Network Halloween-themed baking competitions, mainly for things that definitely didn’t work. That spun off into other baking shows, then chocolate shows, then YouTube videos on decorating and molecular gastronomy, then an endless stream of blogs and forums for the very obsessive. It wasn’t that he had no ideas or experience of his own to drawn on, but it was a new challenge in some important ways, and Roach loved little more than a weird cooking challenge. It set his brain on fire.

Over the summer, Roach started recipe-testing some of the things he wasn’t quite sure of. How to get the glaze just right on the cream puffs so they shone like ripe apples. Experiments with making hard candy that really looked like grapes. Decorating practice—so much decorating practice. No one questioned his sudden splurge in purchases. Edible paper didn’t grow on trees.

When he was fairly confident of the plan, he made his presentation to Stede, Lucius, Oluwande, and Jim. Jim wasn’t a usual part of these proceedings, but their role as resident mixologist (among other things) meant they’d need to collaborate.

Lucius looked suitably impressed. “You can pull all that off?” he asked, only the faintest whisper of doubt in his voice.

Oluwande’s face, however, looked scared. Secretly, Roach enjoyed that feeling, the feeling that he’d bested someone at a game they didn’t know they were even playing. “Looks like an awful lot of work,” Oluwande finally said.

“Don’t worry,” Roach said, half-reassuring, half-challenge. Oluwande’s brows furrowed deeper, and Roach swallowed a chuckle.

Stede hummed and furrowed his brows, studying Roach’s notes carefully. “May I?” he asked, holding up a blue pen.

Roach was familiar by now with his boss’s approach to feedback. In fact, he’d encouraged it. He wanted the questions and concerns in writing. He held out his hands, palms up. “By all means.”

“I’m not sure about this one in particular,” Stede muttered, drawing a question mark alongside Roach’s description of Roadkill Cat [nb: a dish that will be described in a callout section]. “Do you think it’s perhaps too gruesome?”

Lucius and Oluwande both scoffed. “No, man, it’s ideally gruesome,” Oluwande insisted, flashing a smile at Roach. “Fucking hilarious, even.” Roach knew Jim would be grinning at Oluwande over that, and he chose to hold in any reaction to those two being cute or whatever.

“Hm, well, if you say so…” Stede finally allowed.

Via negotiation, the still life elements of the menu were locked in, with a promise to pad out the offerings overall with some more traditional hors d’oeuvres and buffet-friendly dinner items.

When it was Jim’s turn, they simply studied the notebook, jotted down a few notes in their phone, and said, “Cool. Think I’ll experiment with making my own bitters.”

Jim’s competence with a knife and specialized skills had earned Roach’s respect long ago. He nodded. “We good here?” He had dinner to prep and experiments to begin.

Love Will Grow

Susie found the bag on her pillow the night after their third date.  Small, made of dark blue silk, someone had tied it closed with a pink ribbon. The attached title card read 'Johnathon Maynard'. 

Susie immediately felt creeped out. Why would John leave a gift on her pillow? How did he get into her house? Shit, did he take something?

She bolted upright, but she realized the handwriting wasn't John's chicken scratch. Instead, the letters were round, if tiny.  She left the bag on her pillow as she checked all the doors and windows. ��All were locked and nothing was out of place; her laptop and iPhone sat undistributed on her desk.

She picked up the silk bag. It weighed nothing. Susie flipped the card to read 'love will grow' before opening the bag. Inside resided a single, round, seed. An indentation on one edge and its rusty red color reminded her of a heart.

She planted it in an empty Jiffy jar, put it on the kitchen window sill, and watered it every day.

On the morning of her and John's two-month anniversary, Susie noticed the first bit of green sticking up above the soil.  She stared at it in wonder while the coffee maker gurgled, turning the peanut butter jar cum plant pot around in her hands. Growing things had never been something she was interested in, but staring at this little sprout she felt pride and wonder at her ability to encourage the seed to sprout.

On their date that night, Susie decided John had long-term potential.

The plant grew, from a bit of green to a seeding two inches tall.  When the first leaf unfurled, Susie learned John could tell when she was upset and knew exactly how to make her feel better.  This was officially a serious relationship.

Susie had posted in forums about the plant, hoping for help identifying it, with no luck. Its description was strange, it's lifecycle stranger. Since planting the seed, she had planted several other plants that had already bloomed.  But this John flower, as she had taken to calling it, took six months to form a bud. She snapped a picture for her forum. Instead of a green bud-like she expected, the John flower bud was burnt orange and covered in white fuzz. Perhaps that could help someone identify it.

It was an odd little plant, but it was hers. She decided to introduce John to her parents.

The bud didn't bloom for months, just sat on the stem. Susie watered the plant, added fertilizer, but the bud didn't open and she wondered if she was growing a vegetable instead of a flower. No fruit or vegetable appeared, even if the bud swelled to the size of a fuzzy grape. Maybe that was it; the plant was done growing and would die soon.

It didn't.

A year after Susie met John, he proposed.  She came home to find the John flower had bloomed, the grape-sized bud expanding into a flower with an eighteen-inch diameter. Shaped like a sunflower, its pink petals turned a deep red near the center. The flower faced, of all directions, away from the window. 

Amazed at the flower, Susie didn't notice the card against the Jiff jar at first. Written in the same rounded hand the first card had been, it simply read 'Your love has bloomed.'

The map I’m referencing is a map made by Siri Seaarm that they put together by using the game map and the map put out by the books. I found it at the SSO Forums.

And it’s actually a pretty decent map to give you an idea where everything is. Sure, it’s missing Bayslope, Beauvista, Castle Cape, Cod Point, Claymore Castle, Snakebite Farm & Lodge, but err, I’ve played the other games and know where they approximately are, and also, not important to the story overall.

I chose to focus on the Silverglade Area. As a matter of interest, for other projects I’ve researched vineyards, medieval castles and their grounds, and at least one Welsh Baron house. All of which come into play here.

My premise is that I wanted to take the Baroness’ lands and castle and make them more realistic size wise. I didn’t really want to mess with the size of the Manor or the size of the Wine Cave because they seemed about right. The castle was too small. Silverglade Village is too small. Honestly, the farms around the village are way too small. I started with the Baroness Manor and moved outwards.

My map ended up looking something like this:

The first thing I did was take the grapes out of the front yard. No self-respecting Baroness whether or not she owns a vineyard is going to have grapes in the front lawn. On top of that for the house area itself, the front garden needed to be three times bigger than it was before you got to the wall. Once she got to the other side of the wall and after the first terrace rose garden, fine, out of sight, grow all the grapes you want. Plus it’s a hill and hills are good places for grapes.

Secondly, there needed to be more grapes. The profit margins of a vineyard are based upon how many hectares of grapes they’re growing. And having a mountain, like the area does, is actually to an advantage of a vineyard because you can grow grapes on the sides of the hill and have different little weather patterns so they grow to have different tastes. (Chocolate is the same way, go figure.)  More different grape varieties, more types of wine you can make even within varieties. So, the vineyard grew to take over the mountain and the entire sloping hill between the road and the South Silver Waters.

But that meant I couldn’t use that area for a paddock, and then having the grapes on the North of the Manor made no sense, and the wine cave on there also made no sense because you’d have to go past the house with the grapes and the Baroness isn’t going to like that, so I flipped the positions of the stable and the wine cave. So, to the North of the Manor we could make it a paddock.

I added more back gardens because the cliff made no sense. So instead of a cliff, there are stepped terraces down to the Riding Arena. And if you have a riding arena, then you need a stone paved arena like area in front of it, if you’re any self respecting Baron. The same goes for the stables, there is a stone practice style arena in front of the stables.

So that lengthened the mountain and pushed the Goldenhills Valley to the West a bit. No doubt widening the Greendale Forest all for the better.

I then enlarged the race track. It’s too small. Maybe it’s good for a dog track, but not for horses.

But, then Marley is also way, way, way too close to the Baroness’ Manor. Look, nobles don’t want the commoners and tenant farmers too close to them. They put in these things called lawns. Also, birches don’t actually grow the way that Star Stable has them in the game. In the wild, birches are friendly trees. They always have a happy friend. They grow at the very least in twos. And birch forests are a hardwood forest. So, they’re going to force out the pines (soft wood) eventually. But, the existence of the name Silverglade means at some point there was a ‘glade’ or small forest of birch trees. And because Marley was far too close, I shoved him to the East at least four times the distance he is now from the Manor. And that gave me room to put in the required noble lawns and a birch forest between the Manor and the Castle.

I increased the footing size of the castle and also increased the lands around it that would be enclosed with a wall. Using welsh castles built during the same time period (like Caerphilly) as an example. The castle would have a least an acre or two of land enclosed in a wall so that if the enemy attacked, they could open the gates, let the town that had grown up on the opposite of the wall behind the gates and they could defend everyone from inside. (Castles are built for defense in that time. Period.) Silverglade Castle looks like it’s supposed to have a dry moat, so just, same castle, just bigger with a dry moat and more space around it. Technically I should have also made the castle grounds wider. But, eh. If I was going to be fussy, I’d make it twice as wide as it is right now.

Then the Village needed to grow a lot bigger because it’s not only supporting three farmers, but for every knight that you had, you needed to have 100 people to support them by growing food and etc. Now, it’s modern times and the village may have shrunk a little, but that village isn’t even big enough to hold 50 people. I grew up in a village of 50 to 100 people that did have at least 3 farms in town and another half dozen scattered along the roads between tiny villages. (Along with stand alone houses.) So, Silverglade Village needs to have at least 20 or so houses to make sense along with the free standing stores. (And the inn, that might have been a farm house, like my grandfather’s.)

I gave Landon a place to live in the Everwind Fields and Steve now owns all the horses.

So the original map I used ended up looking a bit like this.

This of course means that everything else is going to have to be adjusted exponentially. But, um, not, you know, my problem. (And probably all for the good anyways.) So, there’s lots more to explore. And to me, things now make sense.
