In my personal pantheon of comic strips, at the top, there is Pogo. In second, there is Peanuts. And in third is Calvin & Hobbes, and it comes in third only because it had both of the others as predecessors and you can tell, and its tenure was shorter than either.*

When I think of the immeasurable talent of Bill Watterson, and how he has basically enjoyed his retirement without letting it out much for almost thirty years now, I am sad. I mean I can't blame him, clearly it's his choice, clearly he can make that choice. I might have made that choice in his position But in another universe, another me is reading another decade of C&H and a decade of whatever he decided to do after that, and a decade of art books and experimental work like his recent adult fable book.

(*Pogo had a prime that was nearly two decades -- from almost the beginning to when Kelly's uncontrolled diabetes was really starting to kill him. Peanuts' core prime was also about two decades, but it evolved, and it got better as art. Schulz incorporated his hand tremor into his style! His writing got deeper! Five decades, and not one dead zone! C&H only ran a decade (counting a sabbatical) but it was magnificent every moment.)

I thinks folks expressing incredulity at the quality of the writing and composition in Calvin and Hobbes are often missing the context that Bill Watterson is arguably the most influential sequential artist of his generation. Like, this is a guy who once told the editors of nationally syndicated newspapers to go fuck themselves when they wanted to mess with his panel layouts, and not only did he keep his job, he got his way. He could have had literally any gig he wanted, and he chose to be the Sunday funnies guy because that's what made him happy. He's basically the Weird Al of sequential art.

Rationale Yau et al. (2021) highlight the existence of the relationship between societal expectations and individual performance, which eventually results in various courses pursued during the transition to adulthood. Similar conclusions and results may be related to the results of the study by de Vries et al. (2021). The study under consideration by Heckhausen et al. (2019) shows how relevant this problem is for modern theory. Chung (2018) examines the entire stages of human development, which predetermine and are the basis for creating several patterns of psychosocial development. Respiratory Pathophysiology and Pharmacology Case Study Description of Case The study in question was conducted to determine the mechanisms by which inhaled ultrafine particles are further translated to other areas of the body. The researchers related that "Within hours after the respiratory system is exposed to UFPs, the UFPs may appear in many compartments of the body, including the liver, heart, and nervous system" (Geiser, et al., 2005). Since the means by which the particles are distributed is not entirely understood, the researchers determined to discover the specific pathways that particles take after they leave the lungs. Animal subjects (namely laboratory rats) were used to conduct the study. Outline of Mechanisms The authors studied a variety of mechanisms that could be responsible for the subsequent translation, among which possibilities were endocytosis (Morishita & Engebrecht, 2005) and simple migration of the particles across the wall of the cell (which has been seen in other studies (Delfino, Sioutas, & Malik, 2005). The authors found that no cell process, such as endocytosis, was involved. The porosity of the cell wall and the subcellular nature of the particles were used as a partial explanation of the migration. Thus, the mechanism was said to be entirely physiologically related. No chemical reaction or damage was related to the translation. Critical Evaluation of Mechanisms The primary critique that can be developed in this type of experimentation is whether it is efficacious to relate an animal study to one conducted with animals. This particular study was backed by previous human studies which showed the migration of particles, but not the particular mechanism that caused the migration. Also, there have been many studies which have looked into how animal studies can translate to human subjects. One in particular done by Sena, et al. (2010), related that there have been many problems when trying to predict the effectiveness of animal studies when they are translated to humans, but in the case of this study it was deemed to be appropriate. Primarily because the invasive mechanism used would not be appropriate for humans, and the particular cellular mechanisms being studied were common to rat and human cells. In the case of this study the mechanisms used in the study were complete and reliable. Recommendations In a world in which air pollution is said to cause multiple adverse effects within the human organism, it is necessary for health professionals to understand the truth behind the claims. It is necessary that health professionals educate themselves with regard to scientific studies conducted in such matters, so that they can adequately educate patients and general members of the public. This study shows that there is basically no way for the lungs to stop the advance of ultrafine particles from lung tissue to liver, cardiac and nervous tissue; and some of these particles can be very damaging. Introduction to CVD and Women’s Health

What do you think of when someone says heart attack? What about heart palpitations, coronary heart disease or stroke? If you are like most of the population, odds are you did not think of women. However, cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be a leading cause of death among women in Canada, second only to cancer (Statistics Canada, 2021), and the single greatest cause of death for women in the United States (Bairey Merz et al., 2017). Despite this, most people are not aware of the implications of cardiovascular disease in women's health. For example, a study in the United States found that only 45% of women surveyed were aware of CVD being the number one killer for women (Bairey Merz et al., 2017). Obviously, there is a need for increased awareness surrounding women's health and cardiovascular disease. That’s where we come in! Women’s Vital is a blog aimed at advocating and raising awareness for women's health and its specific connection with cardiovascular disease!

Let’s begin with some quick facts about CVD in women:

Women are less likely to report symptoms associated with heart attacks, coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular pathologies (Merz et al., 2017)

Physicians are less likely to screen women for potential cardiovascular abnormalities (Bairey Merz et al., 2017) 👩🏽‍⚕️

Cardiovascular research in women lags behind men! This leads to poorer understandings of the unique ways CVD can present in women and its causes (Bucciarelli-Ducci, 2020) 🤕

Women are, on average, 10 years older than their male counterparts when they suffer a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack (Stramba-Badiale, 2006) 🚩

Women are more likely to experience shortness of breath, fatigue, indigestion or nausea, back or neck pain, and chest discomfort (but not sharp pain) related to heart disease (Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada)! This is a different profile compared to men! 🙍🏼‍♀️

Before 1986, research in females that did not concern reproduction received little attention (Thomas & Braus, 1998). This decreased the amount of information available regarding women's health, and still contributes to the lack of awareness surrounding women's health and their risk for cardiovascular disease! Before research was done within women populations, CVD was largely regarded as more frequent in men (Thomas & Braus, 1998). However, recent knowledge has shown the opposite is true, and it is important to raise awareness surrounding the issue, with the potential to save lives!

Comparative Literature: History, Theories, Ideologies: Introduction.

In the first week of the course we shall discuss what is comparative literature; its origins; the ideologies that are implicated in the discipline; how it has developed, the questions that have been addressed to it in more recent times, the challenges it faces today; what are some of the traditional methods it employs to study texts; how it sees the relationship between language, culture, reading and understanding texts; its relationship with translation and with “world literature”. We shall then consider some brief texts to ‘see’ and ‘do’ comparative literature in practice.
