#How to Compose Music

The most brilliant and impressive thing Ryan Coogler did in my opinion was figure out how to communicate to the audience the actual tangible power of Sammie’s music, so we could truly conceptualize what it was that Remmick wanted and what he threatened to take away.
#tell me that you didn’t get chills or catch your breath or have some other physical reaction seeing The Scene#me personally? I cry. each time I see it. because it’s that powerful#the cinematography of one continuous shot and the dancers and musicians keep coming out#and the composition and soundscape holy shit#it’s alive and magic and I feel such a WANT to be there. to feel the music in person#and so it’s one thing to know the lore and conceptually understand the power Sammie possesses. it’s another to be able to feel it.#being able to bridge that gap of communication and make the audience feel the power too? that’s the most impressive thing Coogler did#and I know it took an incredible team that worked together. it took the writing composing acting everyone to be in synch#pulling that communication off. and then showing a villain who wants to take it all away?#it makes us understand and despise Remmick even more. because of course he wants this power. we the audience know the allure#but we also know how important it is to the community. how awful the loss would be#and how despicable it is that Remmick wants to take the power away for himself#being able to tangibly understand what the loss of Sammie would mean beyond the immediate character impact? my god#I’ll never shut up about this film#sinners#sinners 2025#sinners (2025)#ryan coogler#my post#sinners analysis

That was... wonderful... to just hear it done for real, after... what? Four years of thinking about it? Wondering whether it would work, wondering if I'd written bits too fast, or too slow, or... to actually sort of... hear it done by real, professional people and the singers. It's... there isn't a word for it, actually.
Standing Stone, by Paul McCartney
Royal Albert Hall Performance (x)
Making Of Documentary (x)
Standing Stone is a 74 minute long classical piece of music, which Paul worked on for four years. It premiered at the Royal Albert Hall on 14 October 1997 with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Symphony Chorus, conducted by Lawrence Foster.
After his success with his first classical piece, The Liverpool Oratorio, Paul was commissioned to create some music to celebrate EMI's centenary. He came up with the idea of exploring "the way a Celtic man might have wondered about the origins of life and the mystery of human existence" and tied this in the with standing stones which to him symbolised something mystical and long lasting.
Photos by Linda McCartney, included on the album.
Paul wrote a poem to assist in getting the story he was trying to convey straight in his head, and it was printed in the booklet of the album. However, Paul wanted the music to work without the listener necessarily knowing the story, for the music to speak for itself, and so wanted to create a piece that "relies entirely on colours and effects drawn from orchestral and choral forces".
He also created two paintings to go alongside it:

I really recommend watching the documentary, Paul is absolutely delightful throughout the whole thing. It's the first time he'd used a computer and software to help him compose and he seems so excited to talk about it (and he has a Wallace & Gromit mouse mat!).
What's also interesting is how the rest of the team spoke about him. They all make a point that this was Paul's creation, and although David Matthews, John Harle, and Richard Rodney Bennet were brought in to assist with the composition, they all talk about Paul's talent, hard work, and the freshness of approach he brought. (The words 'benevolent dictator' may get used at some point, but they also speak of his kindness and generosity.)
It amazes me that someone with no formal music training could make a leap for pop/rock to classical. Composing for an entire 80 piece orchestra and 120 member choir is a completely different skillset to writing a song for the radio (and I'm not saying that's a lesser thing to be able to do, just different). The fact Paul was not only willing to take on the challenge and push himself, but created something so magical speaks to the sheer creative force that he is.
#paul mccartney#standing stone#the beatles#<- sorry i know it's not beatles but i'm here to spread the word of all of paul's other cool projects to you#that documentary is my new favourite paul thing#it's 50ish mins and you'll just have the best time watching him put this amazing thing together#he just continually astounds me while being the silliest little guy#like imagine having no formal music training#not being able to notate music#but being able to compose THAT long a piece for a whole orchestra and choir#like obviously he got lots of hands on experience with music#but for real how many people could actually make that leap#and the whole time just dancing and singing and getting excited about your shirt having musical instruments on it 😭#and also we need more 90s paul appreciation#and please listen to the music!!#none of this 'classical music is boring' bullshit#because it isn't and you can still hear so much of paul in this!!#mine#paul#97

On a basic human level if you do not like the Rings of Power soundtrack, composed by the excellent Bear McCreary, I do not trust you.
#people talk about Howard Shore all the time#which like- GOOD. hes amazing#but Bear is just as good#if not more in some bits#do you have any idea how many themes he had to compose and score???#how many odd instruments and stuff he pulled in for the job??#how he *sounds* like middle earth#just as much and even more in some bits than Shore#give the guy more credit man he needs it#even if you don't want to watch RoP PLEASEEEEEE listen to the music he did for it#my mind is blown all the time by it#he worked so hard on all of it#and it SHOWS#sunkissedliterarylightofchrist#music#bear mccreary#rings of power#trop#lotr

"So, dear, no matter how we part, I hold you sweetly in my head—and, if I do not miss a part of you, a part of me is dead. If I can't love you as a lover, I will love you as a friend, and I will lay a bed before you; keep you safe until the end."

i personally don't understand the amount of hatred i've seen for the recent rose of versailles movie, considering the fact that they summarized a whole 14 volume / 40 episode anime in just 2 hours is honestly rly impressive
this is not to say any criticism for it is invalid (RIP proper rosalie screentime & the backstory for why lady oscar has this role in the first place, you're not going to understand this movie properly unless ur already familiar with this series; think of it more like a tribute / anniversary special) but still this is one of the first animations fully released for this iconic manga in literal DECADES, i still think that in & of itself is something to celebrate
#also like of course some stuff with minor characters is going to be left out girl they dont have the time for this to be in 1 movie#also i actually like the animation n music for the series#sawano hiroyuki is an AMAZING composer but he does more electronic music so of course it sounds diff than what ppl expect#+ having an ex takarazuka member sing the opening song is fucking awesome#do agree tho that the AMV style choice for the musical numbers was a cowards way to do it#this is a problem most movie-musicals have tho#i personally think the best way to do it is just to go all out n incorporate it into the scene; all or nothing yk#anyways i enjoyed it n ppl who never saw this series expecting it to be only yuri r kinda dumb (no offense)#i just kinda hope at least the attention from this movie makes ppl realize how much a series reboot is vv much needed for this series#esp considering its impact on shojou / anime as a whole yk#rose of versailles#versailles no bara#spoilers#movie spoilers#celestxt

Cooking a nice piece for my sideblog rn so I don't have much being worked on for here sorry :'>
I draw most stuff on impulse and saw a Liszt fanart (it's his bday today (22 oct) I think) and it spiraled into classicaloid nostalgia, here it is, my fave irl and in anime my dude Chopin 🙏
Favorite absolute loser in the anime, uses vocaloids in his songs/musik, never touching grass or seeing the sunlight, spirals in a social anxiety attack and summons towers of cardboard to protect himself on his first introduction to the show. Surprisingly one of the only composers that actually pays the rent in the house...
(so close to put on the "erm" glasses on and yap abt that vocaloid song used in guardians of the galaxy 3 and how it's actually a classicaloid ost originally and other stuff related that ticked me off hhhgsrehh)
#Classicaloid#Classicaloid chopin#chopinloid#I'm so so sorry for how fucking cringey I was back when this show aired#so far the best cl chopin fanart I ever made tho#here it is the man the one the reason why I have this online handle#and why I use Frederic as a default oc name when idk how to call them#I don't think I've ever seen another anime that's actually about classical composers#I need to see takt op that's about classical music though?? iirc

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance - Symphony of Sorcery
#kingdom hearts dream drop distance#khddd#symphony of sorcery#scenery#my gif#i originally planned on splitting this set in two and wanted to create separate posts for both sides of this world#but i was surprised that i struggled with that and many of my shots didn't feel distinct enough when i put them all together#dunno how i messed that up so bad since this world has so much going for it#so i had to scrap a good chunk of what i made but i actually think it looks better this way so maybe it's not such a bad thing#sora's side is on the left (except for the last gif) and riku's is on the right#it gives you a better feel for how varied and different these magical realms are#and yeah that's what they're called#anyways i'm so glad this world exists because it's so experimental and different#everything from the visuals to the music and how sora and riku's battle sounds are instead replaced by more music#as if they're composing it themselves#which of course ties into how they must find and collect their sound ideas#it's all so incredible and works perfectly for a game centering around dreams#i hope we can see more unique worlds like it in future games too

Hello!! I've been working on a podfic of the wonderful @aachria 's one piece fic Surely Some Star Binds Me to You. You see I've been using the eyecatchers for line breaks and I got just a tad carried away and made an eyecatcher for the original character E. D. Domino.
Hope you enjoy!!
#one piece#sssbmty#fan music#i dont know how music works#everyone thank my wonderful cousin for helping with the chords#they sounded a bit wacky prior to his intervention#you know sometimes your hand slips and you start making a podfic for an ongoing 96 chapter fanfic#and then you hand slips again and you're suddenly composing music for the first time since the 6th grade

anyway, if you don't know, ive been making a pokemon fangame for the last about 8 months now using pokemon essentials for rpgmaker xp. ive done basically the entire game by myself, including map and game design, drawing custom sprites, arranging remixes of pokemon music in gen 3's sound font to play in the game (which you can hear on my YouTube channel), and programming in the story events and some features of the game (with some occasional help on some script writing from @miamakesmods)
now, ive had this kind of master plan for the story and plot and progression of this game for maybe 6 years now, and this idea has just been simmering in my mind all this time, and i finally took the leap last year to make it happen for real. it takes place on a pacific island region called Isoal that was home to an ancient people who existed before humans and pokemon cooperated, and got by by engineering these devices we now call Runestones, geometric white stones with glowing blue lines that run through them. these people are long gone now, but the Runestones remain littering the island.
ive been putting a lot of myself into this game, little bits and visual gags that i think are funny and charming, here and there there'll be little meta commentary on genre tropes and things that you expect out of the main series. don't mistake my pastiche for disdain though, because i really do this out of love for the series, and i want to make the rest of the gameplay fun and engaging too, because really im trying to make the game that's one that id really want to play myself.
so far, ive released some small private demos of the game to give to ~10 friends to playtest it, and they have all given it very high praise across the board! but soon, i will be releasing version 3.0.0 of the game, which will be its first public demo!! the goal for this demo is to have up to 5 challengeable gyms, about half the game's plot worth of story, a couple side quests and optional content, 7 towns to explore, among other things for you to find if you play it yourself :3
im working really hard on it!! and im putting my all into it!! i hope that when the demo ends up having its public release that you become interested and try giving my little passion project and glimpse into my soul a shot 💖
#how's that for an elevator pitch? good enough for you anon?#pokémon#pokemon#pokeblr#pokemon fangame#also i say soon but soon is pretty relative. i feel like it might be a month off at this point mostly to finish all the music i need to do#composing music takes a long time!!! o.o#my goal with the music is to recontextualize songs that would fit in other places than youre used to them being in main series#like for example youd think the starting town would use one of the starting town themes#but actually its a different town's theme that sounds like it could have been a starting theme#and i try to pick some lesser heard themes to give them more spotlight#songs like x and ys route 1 which you hear for about 4 seconds#scarlet and violet's regular battle theme which only plays in 2 small parts of the map#songs from side games and spinoffs#that sort of thing#motrdev

i was wandering life unaware and unbothered until i saw lovely @royalthorned post about regulus and rabastan and my life hasn’t been the same since. i could never before really see regulus with anybody because it just felt ooc for the way that i view him but rabastan ???…yeah, yeah actually.
rabastan is an awful little thing, all bark and no bite, arrogant, loud in a wanna-be sophisticated way and has a black-and-white superficial, liberal view of life. he does lots of things but never too seriously, he’s impulsive but seldom for good reasons but one thing that he fully is, is himself. maybe he is just too simple-minded to lie, manipulate, and cheat or maybe that’s just how he is, but he is quite probably as honest and true as one can be in his context. he is awful at what he doesn’t do but good enough about what he does, so everyone is content with him. rabastan is the epitome of a Lestrange, he is loyal to an absolute fault and though no one is close in the family, blood is all. and he stands on their motto more than he stands on anything “Corvus oculum corvi non eruit” ( a crow will not pull out the eye of another crow ). he has the charisma and tone of an heir but everyone is glad he is not. he’s chaotic and anger-driven. when his temper becomes uncontrollable he recluses himself to sculpt. ( idk why but i’m convinced all Lestranges have an affinity with art and where rabastan sculpts, rodolphus plays instruments and composes )
regulus on the other hand is hard-headed, sneaky, and far too smart for his own good. and he somehow now had the thick and unwavering attention of the second son of the Lestranges. to rabastan, regulus was the most interesting being he had laid eyes on. a pretty and scrawny man who held all the power he could ever want and chose instead to read stupidly long books about things no one knows about and write equally long manuscripts about things no one could ever think of ( regulus who plays out experiments in his books is dear to me ). he was a ghost who acted all proper and well, and roamed the halls of the black manor. he had the answer to every question, and had everyone tightly wrapped around his finger, and believed in a god everyone faked at hearing, and held grudges like an old victorian lady, and remembered everything all the time, and rabastan wanted nothing more than for that god-sent, angel looking boy to see him too. he had never really tried to get anyone’s attention, always receiving it with little effort, but with regulus he was desperate.
they first met in a family gathering, humble conversation found its way through loud speeches and ceremonial family rites. it was a quiet thing, sweet and poisonous. to regulus rabastan was the forbidden fruit, the epitome of what he couldn’t do but needed to try. some sort of sinful desire he had succumbed to. his life was tidy and plain, and rabastan was the chaos that kept him on his toes wrapped in luxurious clothes, and shiny smiles, and elicited in him a morbid interest he couldn’t shake. i think he liked to know he had with no effort on his part the complete attention of someone like that.
this one is for you Irene @katakosmos

#i haven’t reread this if it’s distasteful don’t blame me#i’m thinking about rabastan who hasn’t spoken to his brother in months despite them living under to same roof just to ask him about music t#impress regulus#like how do you compose ? and how does one acquire an absolute pitch and if it’s possible to learn violon in a day#and rodolphus just ignores him#it’s so funny that rabastan is all angry and loud and obnoxious yet he sculpts#one of the things that take up the most patience and thoroughness#regulus might secretly despise him a little#but just for the sake of it yk#regulus#rabastan#regulus/rabastan
