What is the PR disaster in question that made Rick announce TSATS? I wasn’t active in the online fandom at that point

Of course! This was awhile ago so it figures people don't remember it/aren't familiar:

Basically a couple years back (2020) the fandom had some posts circulate discussing the ways different characters in the Riordanverse were written poorly or offensively. There was a masterpost that went around tumblr but the two major points people were particularly focusing on were Piper and Samirah (particularly because Piper had featured prominently again in Trials of Apollo recently and the third MCGA book had further emphasized and discussed Samirah being Muslim, since it was supposed to take place during Ramadan). Basically each had multiple posts breaking down the ways they were depicted incorrectly or offensively. The entire fandom for a little bit was VERY intensely discussing this (and it's around this time the "RR crit" tag got very popularized on tumblr - it did exist before, but suddenly was being used VERY frequently - cause it was that wide-spread - though the discussion took over basically every side of Riordaverse social media on different platforms). People really wanted Rick to respond to these criticisms, so he did!

He made two blog posts, one about Piper and one about Samirah. He has since deleted both so the links are to archived versions. The short version: he essentially tried to justify his poor research and double-down that he hadn't written them offensively, actually, people were just being mean to him. The fandom, of course, reacted poorly to this.

[Further elaborated events under the cut since this got a bit lengthy]

(Fun fact, this all happened within a month or so of the time i posted an open letter on aphobic tropes in the Riordanverse that Rick replied to, and then he immediately followed with announcing that Reyna was intended to be ace-coded [which cause a LOT of fandom debate] before Rick dipped for a couple of weeks, and then came back to post the blog posts in response to Piper and Sam stuff. So I like to jokingly refer to this as "The time I imploded the fandom/drove Rick off of twitter." Twas I that set the house ablaze.)

Rick fully left social media after this and the LT Musical social media manager became Rick's social media manager for the time being.

So this all happened June/July of 2020. Tower of Nero would end up being published in October of 2020 and a few months after that Rick would state that he was done with the series and wouldn't be writing any more series installments involving Percy, and also that he wouldn't be writing a Nico quest following Tower of Nero as it "wasn't his place to" and encouraged the community to write their own versions of Nico's story.

The community continued to circulate the tumblr posts and discuss the topics of Rick's offensive character depictions, and this is also where we see the dramatic shift in how the fandom depicts Piper in fanwork (though in most cases it is admittedly not an improvement 😬) because of all this discussion. This is also around the time when the fandom brought Viria under scrutiny claiming that she was whitewashing Piper as part of the same discussions, through the justification that she was drawing Annabeth as having tan skin (which she does canonically), and if Annabeth has tanner skin then Piper then that's whitewashing Piper? Except they were using completely separate images of not fully rendered Piper art versus Annabeth in dramatic lighting, so it's all very awkward and poor logic, and did actually get kind of racist. A lot of people were calling it "Tannabeth Blackchase" (yeah, i know) or similar and a common sentiment you'd see repeated is "Don't draw Annabeth as having darker skin than Piper, because that's offensive/racist/whitewashing." (Note: it was not phrased "don't draw Piper as having lighter skin than Annabeth" - we also won't get into certain offensive depictions of Native Americans, but I digress). But yeah, the Annabeth stuff in all that did not age well at all.

Anyways, in October of 2021 however Rick would announce that he was co-writing The Sun And The Star - with a lot of heavy emphasis on how Mark Oshiro works as a sensitivity reader, and some false advertising from the official social media that Mark Oshiro was the first time a non-Riordan author would be collaborating on the series (disregarding the ghostwriters completely). One of the big criticisms in the breaking down of issues in Rick's writing was his lack of ever seeking a sensitivity reader, and fans claiming that a sensitivity reader could solve a lot of the problems. This was basically Rick's "look! I totally listened!!!!" (though it did little to actually improve things, based on the book) and in TSATS as well Piper gets a large cameo at the end where the text very directly addresses a lot of points made in criticism of Rick's writing of her.

We also then of course got the CoTG trilogy later, explicitly stated to be for advertising purposes for the show.

So basically, short version: Rick came under scrutiny for a lot of offensive writing within the span of two months, made some bad blog posts doubling down about it, left social media. TOA ends. Rick says he wasn't going to continue the series/write what would become TSATS. Community celebrates the end of of the franchise but also continues to discuss Rick's poor writing and the blog posts at length. Rick suddenly announces TSATS and Mark Oshiro's involvement. Everybody gets distracted from being mad. Show announcement stuff also happens and the discussions peter out.

December is a straight mess. Hal is jewish, Simon is muslim, Guy is christian, Keli is catholic, and the rest are nonpracticing or atheists. So how do they deal with the mountains of traditions? they pull traditions out of a hat. is there a menorah? a tree? are they fasting because ramadan goes down in december this year? what flavour of christmas cookies? do they pull korugarian traditions in honor of Katma and/or Thaal? only the hat knows.

Speaking of Katma, John mentions he's a widow on camera. He married an alien. Guy may have mentioned he's also an alien. Everyone else in infuriatingly unfazed. Keli doesn't even look up from her phone.

(The government looks into Guy Garner's legal documents and decides they must be forged. they are not. govt got so pissed.)

Simon has modified their car so heavily. it's entirely functional, but it's completely divorced from what it originally looked like. make and model? who the hell knows.

Everyone has a designated night to cook on the calendar. Someone has to supervise Keli to make sure she's not undercooking the meat. Hal will never not make pasta.

Hal's bed is ridiculously large. on nightmare nights, they'll all pile in with him like puppies and kittens sharing heat. this happens at least once a week regardless of nightmares.

the architecture of the house is so clearly John, but the interior decor is so clearly a mix of everyone involved. Plants and herbs, random bits and machiney bobs, tons of paintings sometimes directly on the walls, the chandelier is a modern art piece made of hot wheels planes and cars and the ceiling fan in the dining room has slanted blades like a propeller, there are butterflies everywhere, the bookshelves have a mess of blueprints and child psych textbooks, the shades on all the lamps are red or green, etc.

SOMETIMES THERE'S ANOTHER DUDE. SOME RANDOM BLOND DUDE. WHO IS HE????????? WHERE DID HER COME FROM?????? WHY IS HE THE MOST GRANDFATHER TO EVER GRANDFATHER? WHOSE DAD IS HE??????? WHY DOES HE TLAK LIKE HE'S STRAIGHT OUT OF THE 1910S????????????

Speculation is rife toward whether or not Alan is Guy's alien dad and he learned everything about human society from black and white movies.

John and Guy will occasionally use their powers on camera. There are plenty of black guys named John and plenty of white johns named Guy, so this is their official proof that Jess is living with two GLs, and one of them is an architecture nerd and the other has brain damage.

Guy does a video about MRI procedure! "Yeah, I've had 'em enough times and the first was a bit weird, so lemme walk ya through what they'll do witcha." this is an actual thing nurse practitioners develop for help kids going through a medical procedure for the first time in order to make it feel less scary. (i helped develop the pamphlet on blood draws :P)

So. many. gardening videos. Some of them are thirst traps about someone lifting something heavy with ~biceps~, but most of the time it's just "Water this plant only once a week" "This plant thrives on neglect, so leave her alone. Water her whenever you remember." "If you can't afford grow lights during the winter, she's not the plant for you." "She's toxic if you've got cats so don't get her if you've got cats." "This one's edible! Hal uses it on pasta, it's delicious when it's home grown, saves us on buying a bunch of spices too."

idk if you've ever seen uyen and her german fiancé? but they have a gag to protect her fiancé's face from ever being seen by covering his face with towels, behind plants, keeping his back to the camera, blur spots, etc. this is how they keep Keli's face hidden.

yeah no, the entire calendar year is a mess actually, given the sheer amount of religious stuff they have to cover. everything i know about the abrahamic religions is through whatever i absorb online unfortunately but i can say that it confuses the shit out of keli's teachers/peers. she'll rock up to whatever and talk about fasting for ramadan but--but they swear she talked about fasting for yom kippur. and then she's happily chattering about an easter egg hunt? when asked, all keli does is shrug and say, "it's up to the hat." this obviously clears nothing up. and this isn't even mentioning the korugarian and oan holidays too. those come out of goddamn nowhere and throw things off again. no one is getting a straight answer.

i mean john being a known green lantern and a widower to an alien spouse is one thing but guy being a known green lantern and also an actual alien (which, is that still canon?? i get so confused between the various reboots) but also being totally legit on earth is an entirely other thing. john mentions katma wistfully, says she was his wife and that he misses her, and then nothing more is ever said again. jess isn't here to exploit their grief, after all (although if she did, she'd make SO much money). guy? he has a run in with the pointy end of a knife and brushes it off because he's 'not like you pansy humans' and that's never mentioned again. okay guy gardner, very cool.

simon refuses to skimp out on car design. he will create the Most Efficient fucking vehicle you have ever seen in your entire goddamn life so help me god. this leads to people speculating wildly about what type of car it actually is because no one can figure it out from sight alone. when jess asks simon, camera in his face, he makes a vague noise, waves his hand and wanders off to do something else. on the bright side, their car is totally fucking sick.

still in love with the idea that guy is their best cook but john isn't too far behind. hal, perpetual disaster as he was, was thrown into the deep end and had to learn quick how to make something that a: didn't feed one person maybe and b: was at least a little bit nutritious. so. pasta. jess of course, is a brilliant strategist in the kitchen. she could put something together with an empty pantry. will it taste good? fuck no. but it's filling. simon's getting better. slowly. they haven't had any major issues just yet but honestly, jess is counting the days. jo absolutely burns water and has no time for that particular brand of bull but she'll try on her days and come up with something edible. last time keli cooked and undercooked the meat, they all got food poisoning. honestly, they had it coming. and kyle. yeah.

the Bed Thing started when hal was up chatting to john one night and, no words apparently needed, jess walked straight into his room and flopped facefirst down onto his bed. hal, who's seen weirder shit, just keep chatting. the rest of them crept in slowly. guy wanted to bother john, simon was looking for jess, kyle was wondering why everyone was in hal's room, jo got bored and keli thought they were all hiding or something. the bed fit them all and honestly it was so goddamn comfortable

after that point, it's a regular occurrence for hal to wake up in the dead of night and see a bunch of grown ass adults (and one (1) child) at the foot of his bed giving him the 🥺 face. he's getting too old for the shit, his heart cannot handle it. (YEAH of course he lets them in what the fuck else is he supposed to do???)

the house is a chaotic mismatch of everyone's personal designs. kyle's pieces hung up on the wall, the fridge literally buried under magnets, notices, drawings and shopping lists. there are books everywhere: they've got access to a wide library given everyone's varying tastes. there's a collection of unknowable trinkets that no one can really explain away. they might've gotten them from...some planet? who got them? fuck if they know, but by god they're pretty. the lantern house is organised chaos to the extreme and they all get very very good at navigating the furniture and the trinkets so they don't break anything or themselves. also because. like. at least one of these little souvenirs definitely explodes (despite john's best efforts) and they probably shouldn't touch it.

alan has known about this tiktok thing before hal did and hal's the one actually in the videos, i fear. this is because alan has eyes. anyway, again, very little explanation for why alan is here or how they know him. he's fucking cool though. i know so little about alan but i do know he's lukewarm on every lantern (except keli i think) which really only adds to the intrigue because WHO is forcing grampa over here to hang out with these losers.

john and guy being two gls that jess casually knows and lives with is probably the biggest headache for everyone. both the viewers and also bruce, who cannot figure out how no one's seen through this yet. every time someone tries to corner jess into maybe explaining, she just shrugs and says she knows them from work (which is not technically untrue). jess is also prone to changing her story too. she says she met guy at a birthday party where he was the pinata. so really, speculation is wild and jess does nothing to calm the rumours, only vaguely dodging the 'they're all green lanterns' rumours when they come.

ueeuheheghghge guy and his little mri vid is so cute :((. it's technically something that should go on the JL official tiktok page but considering that the league might've made his brain damage worse in some ways and being petty is fun, guy refuses. so this is perfect for him really. and honestly, it does wonders for his public image and garners a lot of sympathy which is why jess is super careful with it. she might as well while she's at it, you know? and it does work! kids facing the mri machine get a little green lantern sticker for their bravery. guy even gets to meet some in person (and yeah, it's immediately apparent he used to work with kids). it's a whole thing: "'course superheroes need doctors kid! who's gonna put us back together after we get--uh. after we fall down :)?"

there was no way john was gonna build a house and not have at least one veggie patch. unfortunately, the vegetables and herbs have taken over. and it's super convenient because who the hell has time to go shopping when you're busy trying to stop the green lantern corps from falling apart. and of course, it's weirdly educational (whenever it's not a thirst trap featuring hal/jo/simon/john flexing while carrying a big pot) because jess knows her shit and is determined enough to teach other people

I LOVE UYEN AND HER FIANCE!!! i like to think that there is a designated paper bag with holes for the eyes that keli uses unironically but they're good at improvising in a pinch. highlights include: the late martin jordan's jacket (hal's gotten really good at throwing it so it lands perfectly over keli's head from across the room), whatever kyle is currently holding, potted plants, oversized hats, the first construct john and guy can think of (it's a boxing glove 6 times out of 10), a textbook, a romance novel with a very suggestive cover, an evening dress, a white sheet for ghost vibes, legal documents, kyle, a sauce pan, a beachball and the tv once.

the beach vlog is one thing but the rocks? entirely different. everyone paints at least one rock. kyle's done three by the time guy's halfway done with one. they've all got sick little designs on them that have been executed with varying levels of success and cohesion. and then they get to line the soil beds with their little creations. the house becomes home :)))

the funniest part about hal and simon is that it really doesn't take much to set them off. you breathe those keywords in their general direction and they will materialise to tell you all about "how they're being held together with FUCKING GLUE JESS". it's a nightmare. and they're both so disgustingly passionate about their fields too, which is super endearing to everyone who doesn't have to live with them. but no, now no one can go outside and see a cybertruck without simon genuinely wearing a look in his eye that screams 'i'm seriously considering property damage.'

the barbeque is one of the most perplexing videos yet. did the cat talk? no one is entirely sure. the camera moves too quickly to really make out anyone's faces but those...don't look entirely human. would it be racist to say that? who goddamn knows. jess once again explains nothing. the viewers live in (not) blissful ignorance. her channel is thriving and bruce is still mad about it.

With the end of Ramadan rapidly approaching, I'd like to give attention to another Muslim doll line. Though unlike the others, this one is far less obscure...

You know them, you love them, give it up for the Arabian Friends!!!

While Fulla is objectively more popular than Arabian Friends (having a longer span of releases and merchandise), I'd definitely say Arabian Friends are more talked about in western doll collecting circles. This is likely because while all the other Muslim doll lines I've found use Barbie proportions, these moreso resemble Winx or W.I.T.C.H.

Arabian Friends were released by Newboy, the company behind Fulla, in 2007. They were first teased in issues 08 and 10 of Fulla Magazine, before being officially revealed in issues 11 and 14 (the latter seen above).

Only 8 dolls in total have been released for the line: a Deluxe and a Budget doll for each of the four characters. The Deluxe sets came with two outfits, accessories, and an Abaya. The Budget sets came with one outfit and a matching Hijab. Each doll had 7 points of articulation, with bend-and-snap knees.

A third line was announced in 2008 in Fulla Magazine issue 19, advertising that whoever could answer which character had which profession would enter a raffle with the chance to receive a full Arabian Friends collection, but this ultimately never came to pass. (The answers were: Muna - Fashion Designer, Amal - Kids' Teacher, Dunya - Coach, and Ahlam - Air Hostess)

It's said on Dollect there might have been an accompanying animated series, but the most I was able to find were two videos. One seems to be a trailer for the animated series.

The other includes a Back To School merchandise advertisement, and what might be an animation where the girls reminisce on when they were younger and how their aspirations led to their respective careers (the trailer seems to re-use animation from both of these).

A comment beneath the Trailer claims these were actually meant to advertise for an upcoming movie rather than a series, but no further news came out after these videos were released. If this is true it's honestly a shame, and might have been cancelled around when the third series was intended to release. The animation provided reminds me of Sailor Moon, and I would've loved to see it in a full storyline!

First character up is Amal, whose name means "Hope"! Her description reads:

"Never forget that hope is the key that opens all closed doors. With hope in your heart you will never be alone and nothing in life will seem impossible.."

Amal reminds me the most of Usagi from Sailor Moon, as the animation seems to portray her personality as being kind yet clumsy. It's ironic that she eventually becomes a schoolteacher as well, considering she apparently had a habit of arriving to classes late. She's also seen tucking a child into bed, so perhaps she's a mother, older sister, or aunt as well?

While depicted in the animation as having honey blonde hair, her doll has dirty blonde hair in two low pigtails (possibly tied by pink ribbon or thread). And ironically, despite her Deluxe doll using more patterns than her friends, her Budget doll is the only one without a patterned shirt.

Next is Muna, whose name means "Wish". Her description reads:

"Wishes are like bright stars in a dark sky although they are only small they fill our lives with happiness and make the darkness beautiful."

Muna is a Fashion Designer with an eye for intricate design and detail. She spends a good amount of time in her studio, seen drawing on her friend's leg cast and her highschool classroom's chalkboard. At one point, Muna is also seen helping an elderly woman across the street, so clearly her devotion to her work doesn't stop her from being charitable when she can be!

Her fashion style in both doll and animated form definitely seems the most bold out of her friends, reminding me of when 2000s-era fashion would draw inspiration from the 70s! While in the animation she and Dunya were depicted with tanned olive skin, their dolls have the same skintone as Amal and Ahlam. She has brown hair with red highlights. In the animation her hair was often depicted with side part bangs and a headband. However, her Deluxe doll has a red beanie, and her Budget doll has a middle part with braids coming down on either side of her head.

Ahlam's name means "Dreams". Her description reads:

"Dreams are like beautiful butterflies that fly in the wide blue sky. It is good to have dreams because they take you to a place where anything is possible.."

Ahlam is apparently a pianist in addition to her Air Hostess job, having dreamt of flying since she was in school. She seems to be portrayed as considerate and low-key, which aligns with her cool blue color scheme!

Her doll's fashion style seems to be Boho Chic, with beads, frills, and florals. In the animation her hair is short, with a side part and a blue butterfly barrette. Her doll, meanwhile, wears her black and blue hair beneath a navy cap in her Deluxe look, and a middle part tied back in her Budget look. Visually, she reminds me of Ami Mizuno!

And last but not least, Dunya! Her name means "Life", and her description reads:

"Your friendship is like a beautiful flower to me. Your nice words, kind deeds and positive attitude are sure to be rewarded with happiness and love.."

Dunya seems to be a healthy eater, going to someone's house with a bowl of greens (salad or kale perhaps?), and making a smoothie while on the phone. She also does stretches and runs on her treadmill. All of this makes her the perfect fit for a coaching position!

Weirdly enough, her hairstyle in the animation is exactly like Amal's doll, with two low pigtails tied by pink ribbon. Her doll, meanwhile, has brown hair in a side part tied in a high pony with silver elastics (giving me Vidia vibes tbh). Her olive green fashion seems to be relatively modern (at least for the 2000s) and urban. Her clothes are the ones I can most easily see on a Bratz doll!

Overall, I simply adore this line!!! It feels more character-focused than other ones I've covered, and I'm a sucker for such strong color-blocking! It's hard for me to even pick a favorite, since their centralized aesthetics are all so compelling and unique! If anyone who knows Arabic would be able to translate what they say in the animations, I'll happily add an addendum to this post for clarification!

It's a shame the line and its movie was cancelled before it could receive the acclaim it deserved, I would've loved to see what more it had to offer! Regardless, I'm thoroughly impressed with what they managed to put out, and hope the designers have been able to apply their clear talents in other endeavors!

My day has been alright so far! I am presently pondering whether I should plunge into my inbox, save some of the early asks into my drafts, and delete everything else that has already been delayed for months. Looking at almost 700 messages now and I'm not too happy about ignoring most of them, but I don't like the prospect of a never-ending inbox. Remains to be seen.

TW: Transphobia

I had my first ever encounter with a transphobic member of the LGBTQ community this week.

At work on Monday, I overheard some co-workers discussing Transgender Day of Visibility and how President Biden issued a statement acknowledging Trans Day. Since it just so happened to occur on the same day as Easter this year, my very close-minded co-workers took that and Biden's statement as evidence that Trans people are trying to take over Easter!

Now, I consider myself to be Non-binary (specifically Demi-girl/Agender), but I tend to fly under the radar, which is very helpful since I live in a very, very red state. It doesn't hurt that my normal sense of personal style is very casual and all black. So, I can wear traditionally "men's" pants, and no one pays much attention to me, which is the way I prefer it. I hate anything that draws attention to myself.

So, I bit my tongue and hyperfocused on my work. Then, when I went home, the non-binary gremlin in me just couldn't be contained anymore; I opened Reddit and made a post about how no one is going around trying to steal stolen holidays.

Now, I was fully anticipating pissed off Christians to rain their uninhibited fake outrage down onto the comment section (which happened) but I wasn't anticipating a self-identified 60 yr old gay man to come into my comments saying things like, "Why would you put a Trans holiday anywhere near a religious holiday knowing every seven years it's gonna land on said holiday" and "As a gay man I believe that the one part of our community is stifling the rest of us."

Tell me you're transphobic without telling me you're transphobic.

Now, since I can't just ignore the sheer inaccuracy of his math; according to Google from 2001 to 2100, Easter will only land on March 31st 5 times. Five times in an entire century. The last time Easter was on March 31st, it was 2013. So, 11 years ago, or over a decade ago. No one gave a shit in 2013 that Easter and Trans Day were on the same day. But let the president acknowledge it in a statement and everyone loses their fucking minds.

So, why would you avoid celebrating something important in your life on the off chance that it might coincide with someone's religious holiday? Of course, you wouldn't. If your birthday is on Christmas, do you no longer have a birthday?

"Next, why wouldn't you place it in the month of pride then each day of pride month could have a different day celebrating each letter of the lbgtq+ community."

Yes, that is what Pride Month is for, celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. But are you gay only in June?

But sadly, even some in our diverse community isolate and vilify trans individuals just like what this old gay dinosaur is doing. For 15 years, a vast majority didn't know or even give a shit that Trans Day existed. That is until a president acknowledged it.

"May I point out there's no gay holidays that coincide with Yom kipper or Ramadan."

True, Yom Kippur and Ramadan don't coincide with any "gay holidays," but Shavout is directly in the middle of Pride Month. Any outrage there?

"So just piss off the Christian's so they have one more thing to hate us for. I find many in our community asking for acceptance while giving none, just my opinion and nothing more."

How very accepting of you to say, my lord.

"Maybe it's time we all in the gay community and cis people give the whole year to the Trans community."

But they aren't asking for the year, or even a month. They just want one day that is their own. And even members of our own LGBTQ+ community can't even give them that.

"I'm gay so I can't be transphobic."

Your statements say otherwise. Just because you're gay doesn't mean you are absolved of your transphobia.

Perhaps it's time we stop placating these dusty ass old gay dinosaurs and call them out on their hateful thinking. Their "I got mine" attitude only harms our communities. Just because you won the fight for same sex marriage doesn't mean you're safe. The fight for equality is never-ending.

More and more of us are having our rights stripped away right before our very eyes. Roe v. Wade has already been overturned, and they aren't going to stop there. They never planned to stop there. They are very methodically chipping away at our rights. Right now, they are focusing their efforts on the trans community, slowly outlawing their very existence. And while they have you distracted by that, they are quietly overturning same sex marriage laws. Your rights aren't safe and never will be safe as long as we have members in our communities who subscribe to this kind of thinking.

Hey guys. As you guys have seen my last post, I'm taking a break from art for a month. But it's not because of my mentality- I mean kinda but it's mostly connected to my religion.

I have read that drawing humans, animals and anything etc. With eyes is prohibited. Unless the facial details aren't complete. For example a person with glasses and a mask is ok. A person with an eye patch and mask is ok. An person that has only glasses on and no mask but the eyes aren't visible is also ok.

Similar with animals.

The main part is, the face is not allowed to be complete. I cannot explain completely why because I was only told a bit of why it is the rule. But a rule is a rule.

So please be mentally prepared that I will post less and less about human/animal art and will maybe draw skies, places and etc other than people and animals.

And I please you to understand my decision and to understand.

I want to do as many good deeds as possible this Ramadan and later in my life. And stop all my habits that could be sins.

I'm sorry it turned that way but I just really take the day of judgement Serious unless like my family. I am a little ashamed of my family because of how unserious they take the day of judgement. I wanna change. I don't wanna be like them. I wanna do good.
