star wars outlaws
#star wars outlaws#kay vess#nix#did a brief detour into this game it isn't bad! but certainly lacks in polish for core loops. tutorialization pipelines are ass also#performance - also ass. had to play quality on ps5 for it to have any clarity at all. but the open world is gorgeous#and it certainly nails the very narrow target of horse girl star wars fantasy (ripping across tatooine on a speeder with a little Guy)#nix is everything I love him. modern star wars rarely captivates me but they do know how to do lil guys real well#my photos#star wars#also-also. would be remiss not to mention. never played a game with unregulated scope creep this noticeable before. it's baffling#I KNOW people crunched on this it's in the walls in the floorboards it's everywhere. unmitigated hodge podge of mechanics and pillars#and those pillars are often unbalanced between each other. storytelling payloads are an issue too. there's pre-rendered in-engine cutscenes#real-time in-engine cutscenes. and digic-produced full CG cutscenes. and their placement and prioritization feels insane and inscrutable#like three different teams were working on the game at the same time and never in congress or coordination#it also suffers from the open world 4th and 5th priority narrative payload issues - many secondary and sometimes even primary questgiving#and expository dialogues are in-game zoomed camera lipsync exchanges. or flavor text#on the other hand - surprisingly deft mission design itself? side quests reward either cosmetics or actual unlockable deployable skills#it has fleeting genes of a metroidvania spread across a wide open world in that sense. but only fleeting. the rep system is a smokescreen#and progression in general has a very open and unsatisfying end to it. this game needed less scope and maybe no space stuff at all#the resulting resource allocation adjustment would truly make for a captivating open world adventure. as it stands it feels like#a product of overworked people misusing mismanaged budgets and managing to sprinkle some love into it regardless#games should never be good on the merit of their perceivable seasoning of overwork and passion. that really only bakes a sadness cake

I think it was better when new players didn't as easily get spoiled about humans piloting the warframes. The Duviri Paradox shouldn't be playable until at least around the time of The New War.

I have come to the realization that I have not done either of the things I planed to do with Bigby when I got the inhuman bondage dlc, so I have decide to amend that while I replay confessions mode for candles. Now my goal will no longer be trying to complete all of the confessions with the same team, and will now be how fast can give Bigby a lobotomy.
I will update once my new goal is completed.

I've been having so much fun with the chatting system it honestly felt jarring to suddenly hit an Entire Convo with Quincy that was just completely, unsalvagably out of character for my own Drifter
The whole "my people in the Origin System don't love me, the only home I've ever known was the Zariman (an answer I've so far managed to dodge bc it's Untrue), they sent me here bc they don't care about me/want to be rid of me, etc etc" shit is just. So completely inaccurate for North and I'm shocked that that's the only option DE have considered for Drifters?
Like yes North is depressed as shit and still wonders if everyone only cares about them bc they're Kohlrabi's inferior shadow, but like. they know they are loved. They consider the Orbiter and the refurbished Dormizone corridor their home. They consider these people their home. They went to 1999 of their own choice, knowing they were the only one who could help, and it was a painful fuckin choice and a painful goodbye and a lot of grief bc What If They Don't Find Their Way Back. The only reason they're managing to feel somewhat at home in Höllvania in the meantime is bc Higgins is also there, bc of course he's somehow managed to follow
RIP to Canon Drifter I guess but North has a family, damn it

In terms of tone, out of all the fantasy video game series I know, The Witcher is still my favourite. Bit too heavy on the grimdark maybe, but possibly I enjoy that. For example, it's the only series that does the "Human racism against elves and dwarves" idea well. I don't care about dull soggy "perfect victims" and stories that try to make their side the extremely obvious choice. TW has elven terrorists, elven guerillas, elves who commit atrocities that make you consider whether and when justice (or just revenge?) without mercy can ever be appropriate, ineffectually bitter elves, elitist arrogant elves, impulsive elves who lash out in short-sighted ways, calculating elves who send others to their deaths. You can see that they're all coping with their shitty situation in their own imperfect way. It's a similar situation with the Witchers themselves, being that they're treated by humans both as superhuman and subhuman, sometimes as both by the same people in the same day. I love the series' treatment of racism, conformism, resistance, statecraft, mental laziness, self-righteousness. TW2 is my favourite. Other fantasy games that try to take on this topic just don't measure up.

It's always interesting to see how UO gives to its local church a neutral role in the world - dare I say neutral good as in the faith is cited by some characters as their source of inspiration and strength to endure the various events the game puts them through...
And then, apparently, the decision of not having the option to kill Sanatio is controversial?
albion thoughts under the cut
Albion was undercooked because bankruptcy and all, and I already wrote a bit about the general wtf of that arc that can basically be summed up as "Scarlett's dad told his two right hand men that his daughter is away/in hiding and made them swore to never reveal anything about her to anyone, including themselves", so when Scarlett's dad kicks the bucket, they both know a heir exists somewhere, but they can't trust each other and have a fall out instead, which leads them to fight and, ultimately, to the "plot" and "antagonism" of this arc.
Sanatio's basically in charge of the Orthodoxy - Nigel is in charge of its knights? - and the Pope's second.
Pope told Sanatio Scarlett exists and went away for a "mission", but never told him where she was sent to - something only Nigel knows.
The Pope kicks the bucket - given how Galerius laments his death in Cornia, I doubt Arant was killed by his goons or something after unlocking 5 out of 6 sanctuaries, that's why he's super happy that they finally found Scarlett to unlock the last one - and then Sanation, as the de facto dude in charge of Albion is faced with a dilemna.
Not knowing where Scarlett is, he either reveals to his people and the faithful that the Pope is dead and is line is extinguished - which would send the faithful and the people of Albion in disarray because 1/the pope and his line are revered/sacred in Fevrith's religion 2/the orthodoxy falls apart, including the local churches etc etc, and we see and are told that the faith is the only thing some people rely on to withstand and survive the Zenoiran invasion -
Or Sanatio hides the Pope's death - asking Baltro to sort of preserve his body from decomposing too much - thus lies to the people of Albion and the Faithful, but at least they can still have faith/believe that somehow things are going to be better, and the Church is still, somehow, allowed to do its stuff (Zenoira apparently doesn't mind the church helpind people and doing Sharon things).
"But that means working with Zenoira, the ones who invaded his homeland and the baddies of the verse!"
Having replayed that part in Bastorias, we have a NPC who's basically telling us that while Albion apparently "accepted" to work with Zenoira, their autonomy is nothing but a façade since Zenoira stationned a good chunk of its army there : in a way, Albion is occupied by the Zenoirans.
Without any clue about Scarlett's survival or location, I suppose faced with "we destroy you and what makes your people withstand our occupation/nonsense" and "you will lie to your people and we won't turn you in minced meat, you'll be left with some degree of autonomy (lel) but we won't kill your people (not overtly at least)", it was basically having him be stucked between two hard choices, but only one meant immediate doom, so it's the one he avoided.
Of course it sucks - and a half baked plot being a half baked plot - means that when the Liberation Army manages to boot Zenoira away from Albion, Sanation's choice to accept the Zenoiran rule, if it means temporary respite for his people is seen as fishy/inacceptable, but iirc his Raenys rapport is pretty upfront : some people resent him for siding with Zenoira, and yet, he picked what was, at that time, the "lesser evil" between the two.
Albion is interesting because it's one of the few recurring motives in this arc, and it contrasts well with what we saw in Cornia in the beginning.
Clive's rapports with Joseph are all about him coming to terms with what his father did - and how it wasn't useless - even if it mean his and his family's death : he fought and resisted against Zenoira. Clive himself seems to have little love for the lords who "turned against the crown" and sided with Zenoira after the invasion.
We could have had a confrontation with Monica (and Melisandre!)'s pov, because Monica's grandpa apparently supported Zenoira under the promise/assurance that Galerius and his army were going to let their people alive/alone if they sided with him (as much as Zenoira follows on those kind of promises lol). But then, it's revealed that Monica's grandpa was actually supporting, in the shadows, the Liberation Army.
In the last arc of the game, this is echoed again through Jerome - the knight who bakes sweets. Sure, there's not a lot to say about him since we recruit him so late in the story, and he has nearly no rapport convos to flesh him out : and yet we see in his mission that he is a local lord who is very much appreciated by his people, but immediately surrendered when Zenoira invaded Albion, instead of fighting them (like Fodoquir!) because if he surrendered, it'd mean his people would be spared.
And they were untouched (apparently?) by the Zenoirans.
However, Jerome still thinks he deserves to die (Alain can execute him if the player wants to be an ass I guess) because, even if it was for his people's sake, the thing is he still worked/accepted the Zenoiran rule.
Interestingly, in an era where some people cry everywhere they want "morally grey" settings, it's the second time that when some characters are faced with impossible dilemnas, some part of the fandom revile them for picking a "wrong choice".
in both cases, those people are in charge of that setting's major religion, maybe it's just a coincidence?
Clive wonders if his father made the right choice to priorize "the cause" over "his people", when Jerome immediately abandoned "the cause" for "his people".
and then you have Fodoquir who abandons both when his people sacrifice his son
I guess I'd really have appreciated a rapport conversation between Jerome and the Cornian knights, but VW ran out of time/money.

Today’s gameplay progress:
I went from running Vanaspati to unlocking Ktisis Hyperboreia. In seven hours. That is approximately 27 quests. There are only about 27 more quests left in 6.0 itself. (this means there’s a non-zero chance I could finish 6.0 this weekend, but I’ll admit that’s not necessarily a given, considering that I might be busier this weekend than I was today and also how long cutscene-heavy the last part of the game is.)
Levels-wise, pictomancer is now up to 98 because I played as it in Vanaspati and also an alliance raid roulette. I have figured out the point at which it shifts from having not enough to do to suddenly having too many things to do, and it’s when you get a second charge of Hammer Motif(? the button you press to get three lots of a hammer attack) + third charge of Pom what’s-it-called (the button that turns into Mog of the Ages), because then all of a sudden you have to find good times to cast the long cast motifs to refresh charges much more often while in fights that are a lot more constantly demanding (thus giving you far fewer moments where it feels like doing your long cast motifs is the best use of your time).
I also managed to get astrologian up to level 39 from a levelling roulette. This does not mean I am anywhere near confident with being it, but it’s nice to get it more experience regardless. Also, 39 is one of my “favourite”/“lucky” numbers, so that’s nice.

anyway I liked Veilguard a lot and I'll probably play it again, especially since it runs okay on lower settings on the steam deck (still prefer big fights on a bigger screen). the rogue class was everything I really wanted combat-wise and was a hell of a lot better than Inquisition, which felt like a complete slog when I replayed it.
plus I wanna romance Harding and Emmrich and Bellara and everyone and yeah. good companions, good cast. and it's a very pretty game.

ok im sharing because it's been my theory for years and i was surprised when i realized it's not something i really see in the fandom? (granted i do avoid the fandom a bit but i've been lurking since da4 was announced)
But i'm like. convinced. deep in my bones. that the Nightmare Demons in DAI is actually Fear from Dirthamen's codex entry. And Envy is Deceit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
they're also mentioned in Falon'Din's codex entry like this:
Tumblr media
Nightmare's realm is full of the Crow's status we usually see in Kirkwall, which would make sense to link to Dirthamen. (also note how the first pieces of Red Lyrium and Corypheus himself are found under Kirkwall, which has adopted the Double Raven's Iconography as its own. Note also that the Lost Temple of Dirthamen is on the other side of the sea, nearby the Free Marches, possibly implying the Free Marches used to be Dirthamen's domain -- especially since Inquisition calls the Double Raven's aesthetics "Free Marches" in the decor settings).
Yet we're in Orlais, and while the Fade does what the Fade does, it's odd to see this iconography here after we associated it to the Free Marches for so long. Unless it represents Dirthamen's minions even more so than the Free Marches. (especially since otherwise we see the Double Raven in Elven Ruins or, even more accurately so, in the Shattered Library, place of Knowledge (which is credited to Dirthamen), in which "Librarians" are currently turned into Terror Demons alike to Nightmare.)
Nightmare's realm is also where we find that one codex that is most likely about the Evanuris talking through the Blight:
Tumblr media
Nightmare=Fear makes so much sense to me. It's a Fear Demon. It has knowledge of the Blight, the ravens are everywhere in this realm, and this codex would suggest it is working with Corypheus because it knows it can help the Evanuris be freed one day.
Meanwhile the other demon who actively helps Corypheus is Envy, from the Champion of the Just questline. A Demon who physically approaches the appearance of Terror Demons, who swap its appearances to look like the people it envies, deceiving people all around in order to start shit. In COTJ the Bad Future is told to us by Envy showing what it intends to do once it takes our appearance- making US be the one person to deceive our allies to do Corypheus' bidding.
in the myth, Fear and Deceit were left without master to wander the Fade and prey on the souls of the Deads. The idea that they could be lurking, waiting for someone with whom they could team up?
And who's best to help the ex-representant of Dumat, God Of Silence, than the two minions of the God Of Secrets?
