Rambling: So much of this is just like. It's all the money, you can't get around the money. Engineering is primarily a cost optimisation problem, so is business, where do you buy your parts, how much do you pay your labour. The companies can make equal quality goods cheaper in China because of the industrial base. Western workers don't want to work in manufacturing because it doesn't pay as much or as reliably as other jobs.
I like reading articles and watching videos about factories and a thing you find with a lot of American factories is they're often highly specific niche industries where they don't have much competition or they're really low volume where less intensive manufacturing processes still work or they have big military contracts that give them their base income. Really it's wild how every little engineering shop in the US requires base level security clearance because they make the cable harness for the Hornet or whatever. And crucially, crucially: they employ 100 people. Planning to work for one of these companies is like planning to be a pro baseball player but you make $35/hr.
I studied in South Africa, and I studied electrical engineering, but like. That was my fifth or sixth choice from a personal interest perspective? As a teenager I was really into biochem. I really wanted to work on like. Bioreactor stuff. South Africa has okay industrial chemistry but not that much biochem. So why would I go spend five years getting a biochem Masters and hope I could find a job at one of like six companies. It's a bad move! Once again, baseball player odds! Mostly if you're lucky you'll get to fuck around in a half-related field for a few years and then you'll wind up with some office job that you found because it turns out running tests on paint shearing isn't personally fulfilling enough to make you stay in a lab job.
Hell, even taking the Good Hiring Engineering Job market, it's a goddamn pain in the ass to find any actual engineering work. I applied to dozens of internship positions every semester at engineering firms and workshops and never so much as heard back, whereas I could go to the software job fairs and get two offers and several interviews for a vacation job in a couple weeks. You can swim upstream to get in there but even if you're willing to take the pay cut, engineering jobs are slow moving and slow hiring, and in small departments your professional progression is often gated behind someone retiring or dying.
A while ago someone (was this Reggie? sounds like him EDIT: YEP) was talking about how part of the reason why no one in the US for the past 20 years can do like, epitaxial growth optimisation isn't because there's some philosophical or educational divison, but because anyone committed and driven enough to spend months optimizing that would just put that energy and commitment into going into software or becoming a quant or some other higher yield option. Meanwhile if you're a driven and focussed ladder climber in China there's dozens of factories looking for someone to do exactly this. The people in the West who are so into this that they still do it are often in academia, not industry, and that's an even more competitive and impenetrable sector to get into. Getting a PhD grad job in academic chip manufacturing is miserable, it's basically a six year long interview process that costs you hundreds of thousands of dollars that has a 0.1% chance of panning out.
Actually, I did once do a factory internship, it was my only nepotism internship, at a construction materials factory where my dad was a manager, and it was really interesting work! I had a lot of freedom in a small engineering team and I spent a while understanding a bag filling machine and reading manuals and tuning the control process and talking to floor workers and designing sheet metal parts to improve their jobs. And when I talked to the engineer supervising me I found out he was on a six month contract that wasn't getting renewed and he would be leaving the company basically the same time my internship ended. That company hadn't hired a full-time process engineer in ages, and probably never would if they could avoid it. Not encouraging!
People often say you should get into the trades because they pay well and are material fulfilling work. This is like. It's an elision. Successful tradespeople are in very high demand, but becoming a successful tradesperson is very, very finicky. I worked with a lot of electricians and millwrights and technicians, and for every tech who was successful and running a roaring business there were five guys stuck in eternal apprenticeships or struggling to make a name for themselves in the industry on their own. Some trades are great for this, other trades are 90% training scams where you spend nine months and five thousand dollars on a course that gives you a certificate almost no one cares about.
Every now and then I talk to an installation tech I used to work with who has a bunch of CCTV and security certs he got in the DRC, and he is just absolutely struggling to get by. There's already enough successful companies to serve the demand, why would you take a risk on this fly-by-night? He could find a technical job, and he does, but it's a dead end, everyone wants a base technician forever, they don't want you to upskill and move on. They hire in an external electrician to come in for an hour sign off on your work, and that's all you need.
You can't develop an industrial base unless it's appealing to work in the industrial base. If you're an industrialising nation, the appeal is "It's not farm work and you might get some real money instead of a sack of barley" but in a modern society you need to pay at least as well as the office jobs. If your industrial sector is small it can afford to only hire the most qualified people because it's a labour buyer's market, and that's how you produce a massive knowledge gap.

How I Got Multiple Remote Job Offers Without Relying on Job Boards
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to share my experience in case anyone else is struggling with remote job hunting. A few months ago, I was frustrated. I kept applying, but nothing worked. No offers, barely any interviews.
So I changed my approach, and it actually worked.
A bit about me
I’m a software engineer. I’ve been working full-time for years, and a few months ago, I started looking for a part-time remote job. At first, it was casual, but due to personal stuff, it became more urgent.
Like many people, I started with LinkedIn and even paid for Premium. I applied to many jobs, got a few interviews, but no solid results. After five months, I felt stuck and knew I needed a different method.
Step 1: Europe - Google Maps + Manual Outreach
I searched for recruitment agencies in Europe using Google Maps. I zoomed into countries like the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands and typed "recruitment." Tons of agencies popped up, and many had websites with resume upload options.
I created an Excel list of over 450 agencies across Europe and sent my resume to each of them. It took two days, but it worked.
I also prepared two versions of my resume, one with a photo for Europe and one without for the US and Canada.
Step 2: US and Canada - Resume Tool

It was a mouthful - he allowed employees of his department to lovingly call themselves CROWS, but only internally. Viago had worked for Advanced Negotiation & Tactical International Vacancy Alignment (A.N.T.I.V.A.) for twenty-five glorious years, and every department he’d ever worked in was the better for it. Viago’s organizational skills were legendary, and though many of his coworkers flinched when they saw him coming, Viago recognized grudging respect when he saw it.Â
This particular Monday marked the kickoff of internal compliance undertaking season; Viago’s favorite time of year. He had circled in on the desk blotter calendar, with the letters ICU written in precise block script, diagonally centered. Viago sat at his desk in his top-floor corner office of ANTIVA HQ (the furthest corner from the front door, but a corner office nonetheless), tapping his long fingers impatiently on his mousepad. The time was 7:04 in the morning.Â
“Arthik,” Viago called softly, knowing his assistant would hear him regardless.Â
“Boss?” Arthik leaned back in his chair, cracking the door to Viago’s office open a little wider. He pulled the vertical blinds open wider, offering Viago a view of Arthik’s desk space and the open office beyond. “What’s up?”
Viago steepled his fingers, elbows placed on the corners of his calendar. “Do you know what today is?”Â
“ICU,” Arthik replied without missing a beat. “We’re deploying the email campaign at 8:30 this morning, just as planned.”
Viago’s satisfied smile was all the confirmation Arthik would get. He’d lasted eight months as Viago’s assistant and was familiar with recognition for a job well done by now.Â
“Coffee?” Viago inquired, but Arthik had turned away to look at a new face, mostly hidden behind a double-stacked tier of Karasu Kafe carryout cups from the cafe downstairs.
Viago knew it was a new face because:
He didn’t recognize the hair that went with it
Coffee was due at 7, and 7:05 was unacceptable
HR had informed him there was a new hire starting this week, and the hiring of said person was not negotiable, nor did he have insight into the hiring process.
“De Riva?” a melodious voice asked. “This is the 5th floor, exec suite T, correct?”
“You’ve got the right place,” Arthik said kindly. “Are you the new guy?”
Before the hair could respond, Viago intoned, “Send them in, please.” He needed to see the miscreant himself.Â
The coffee cups made their way into Viago’s office, followed by the shiny white hair of their bearer. Viago watched with (internal) mild amusement and (mostly) withheld judgment as the person shifted their stack of cups and placed them on the chair just inside the door.Â
“Good morning, Mr. Viago de Riva!” the person chirped.Â
They wore a velvet suit jacket, shiny satin slacks that didn’t reach their ankles, and colorful socks with sneakers. A clear violation of the ANTIVAn dress code, if Viago had ever seen one.Â
“It is morning,” Viago said dryly, trying not to make eye contact.
“I’m Aydenne de Riva, no relation, but isn’t that weird?” Viago didn’t have a chance to process this odd coincidence, because the Aydenne kept speaking. “I’m your new seasonal intern temp-to-hire shadow, and today’s my first day!”
Viago’s jaw dropped. This...Aydenne...with that suit...in his department? Shadowing him? He’d thought the hiring was for a replacement for Arthik, who seemed to show more frequent signs of interest in other roles.
“Leave the coffee. Arthik will show you where to go.” Viago turned his chair to face the wall, as clear a dismissal as he could give, with so little time to prepare himself for this news.Â
There was no sound of a subordinate exiting in an orderly fashion with their eight little coffees (which clashed unpleasantly with Viago’s aroma diffuser in the corner). Viago waited five more seconds in case the newcomer was unclear as to their directive.Â
“Mr. Viago?” the beautiful voice asked, sounding unsure.Â
Just great. Viago now faced the predicament of turning to address this person once more, or waiting to see if they would finally understand what was being asked of them.
Power plays on a new hire’s first morning, before 8 AM?Â
Viago allowed a hint of his arctic annoyance to creep into his tone. “I trust you know which one of us is Arthik?”Â
“I...yes?” the newbie said uncertainly.Â
“C’mere, Rookie, I’ll take you around the office and show you to a desk you can use,” Arthik said helpfully, if belatedly.Â
“Arthik. Please ensure the...Rookie reviews the employee handbook and signs off on their compliance training before you start with the tour.” Viago needed this eyesore to understand what the rules were before they knew which cubicle the headhunters kept their peanut butter and cracker stash in.Â
“My name is Aydenne,” the Rookie said. “I use he/him pronouns, if that helps.”
“I use Excel whenever possible, but it’s nice to meet you,” Viago responded crisply. “Hand me my coffee, if you please, and close the door behind you. It’s an important morning, and I have much to do.”Â
I truly and honestly enjoyed this and it's going to live in my WIP bin because I think I'd commit to a whole story or series about them 🤣 writing about a hapless new hire and their dramatic manager in corporate hell is certainly a topic close to home lolol

Maybe my HR project...
... is not meant to be. In 2023 it got wiped out by windows re-install without me realizing full backup was not done. In 2025 the backup drive itself died. Which means I have no master files intact (i.e. detailed original character sculpts or original textures done in Substance) outside optimized blender versions. Disc has physical (sectors) damage, will see if least something can be salvaged by tech wizards. In 2023 loss was only 4 months of work - some models, some sketches, but now its 2 years of work being lost, and yes the disc was middle of additional copy-backuping process. But due to errors I had to manually baby sit copy process and I had cancelled it due IRL matters twice just before HR project data cluster (its something like hours I would have needed to sit and click yes and retry to every single file)
I am cursed. Before i decide once and for all, i go sleep at the cold northern sea on a big boat... and tomorrow I will likely go contact some tech wizard, that recovery would minimum be 200 euro. Is any of my hellraiser stuff worth it? The blender/low poly files are still nice - or so some "beta viewers" have liked my screen-caps from animations and the assets from libraries can re-downloaded, but the sculpts - like fancy Pinhead and cenobites, Kirsty and my original characters would be lost for times.

We become our best selves, not in ways that allow us to find personal peace and better serve the world around us, but in ways that make us better workers and citizens. Falling in love with someone too quickly is “toxic,” or “unhealthy” but falling in love too slowly or struggling to connect with others is a problem too, and potentially a sign of narcissism. We make fun of the casually cruel, HR-ified social scripts that circulate the internet every few months, but I think those scripts are just extreme manifestations of a more subtle and insidious belief system that we’ve already bought into: we are supposed to be going to therapy to learn how to control ourselves. No more yelling, public crying, or any version of making a scene. No more being in a bad mood at your stupid fucking job. No more falling madly, deeply in love. The world has rendered you so fragile you might break at any moment under the weight of its cruelty. And you’re too weak to change the world (shh, you are) so you have to live in fear. You must be careful, and quiet, and good. This is how you survive.
