Fu-Schnickens

Picks and Shovels is a new, standalone technothriller starring Marty Hench, my two-fisted, hard-fighting, tech-scam-busting forensic accountant. You can pre-order it on my latest Kickstarter, which features a brilliant audiobook read by Wil Wheaton.

I can't remember where I first heard dancehall reggae, but I do remember where I bought most of my dancehall cassettes: at Play De Record, a great hip hop/reggae DJ store on Yonge Street in Toronto whose bins were all killer, no filler. I'd go into the store every couple weeks and more or less pick three albums at random and love every one of 'em. I just discovered that PDR is still in business, which makes me extremely happy:

Look, I know that mostly I use this blog to talk about tech politics, monopoly, impending fascism and the climate emergency, with the odd science fiction review. But all that other stuff (modulo the sf novels) are weighing on my heavily this week, and I feel like posting something a little more lighthearted. So I consulted my editor (me), who called a special meeting of the editorial board (also me), who kicked it up to the publisher (still me), and they all agreed that I could write a post about a weird hip-hop album that's been earworming me in the best way imaginable since 1992.

I'm pretty sure I bought Fu-Schnickens' debut album "F.U. Don't Take It Personal" at Play De Record. Certainly, I have a memory of stopping on the sidewalk outside of the store to wrestle the cellophane off the cassette and pop it into my walkman. I definitely remember my first walk through the city with the music in my ears. I laughed aloud. Several times. I might have even danced a little:

At the time, I knew nothing about Fu-Shnickens. In the years since, I have listened to F.U. Don't Take It Personal approximately one heptillion times and somehow managed not to learn anything about Fu-Schnickens. Today, I read their all-too-short Wikipedia article and learned that the group was together between 1988 and 1995, that their second album (which I remember not being as impressed with) had a top-40 novelty track with vocals by Shaquille O'Neal, who said the Schnickens were his favorite hiphop group:

I get it, Shaq. They're great. First of all, they're incredibly silly. Long before Wu-Tang Clan, they were doing this weird kung-fu movie schtick in their songs (which, admittedly, walks an uncomfortable line between "parodies of racist depictions of Chinese people in the movies" to "racist parodies of Chinese people in the style of those movies"). Their songs are jammed with pop culture references in a way that puts, say, Paul's Boutique to shame. You can get a sense of this by looking at the lyrics transcribed over at Genius (where they are criminally under-annotated):

Take "La Schmoove," a song that references "The Jeffersons," "Leave It To Beaver," "Superfly," Honey-Nut Cheerios, Popeye, Elmer's Glue, Elmer Fudd, Pippi Longstockings, "Married With Children," "Three's Company," "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," "Do-Wah-Diddy," the board game Battleship, and Pepe Le Pew. It features rhymes like "we in there like swimwear," "Adios muchachos dorme vous unbuckle my Fu-Schnick shoe," and "Yo zilch kaput me nada none son." It's legit bonkers.

But also: they're really good. The frontman, Chip Fu (Roderick Roachford) raps really fast, has amazing flow, and periodically just starts rapping backwards, like literally saying the same syllables he just said, but backwards, with that same amazing flow. They are steeped in old dancehall, and it shines through (they more-or-less single-handedly revived Tenor Saw's now-familiar "Ring the Alarm").

Many of their songs feature a kind of hiphopified Phil Spector wall of sound, a kind of melodic drone that underlays the beats and lyrics. As soon as I hear that drone, I start smiling, because I know what's coming.

I have been earwormed by these tracks for this entire century and much of the past century. It's always really hard to explain why you like something, but I think that Fu-Schnickens' pop culture stream of consciousness and nonsense syllables are a kind of rhythmic version of my own internal monologue, which is a kind of endless babble of fragments of books, music, movies and TV; dumb jokes; words repeated until they lose all meaning and become meaningless phonemes, all kind of splinters of ideas and words floating around, bumping into each other.

There's lots of dancehall and dancehall-adjacent stuff that's arguably better than this album, like "The Good The Bad The Ugly & The Crazy," the amazing and underappreciated collaboration between Necka Demus, Junior Demus and Super Cat:

What's more, this is one of the very few (non-Talking Heads, non-David Byrne) albums that my daughter and I like listening to together in the car. It's so perfectly silly, virtuosic, funny, and danceable. Still as good as it was when I was young and had the hips I was born with. I've owned it on cassette and CD and as MP3s. I somehow own the vinyl (though I have no turntable).

Red egg anon, bless you for your information. This is why when I finally do manage to get into quail, I would love to buy from you. If you still have them that is, when I finally have the opportunity

No problem! I do have SOME search filtering via extension on my browser (and firefox seems to do better in general) BUT as a good rule of thumb, if you're trying to find scientific articles (as opposed to, like.... blog posts or facebook or something), try your search term and just add "science" after it.

This is such a silly little trick, but! when I searched (even on google) for "red egg coturnix science," the study I linked was the second result, so it typically does work very well! This is normally how I find stuff when I'm trying to research something, and once I have some leads, I can take that title and search it, and/or check the citations area for related publications I can search for and read through. Sometimes stuff can be trickier to find, but a good 85% of the time, just adding 'science' to the end gets me SOMEthing to work with right off the bat.

And I would be happy to help you acquire quail from somewhere reliable, even if I'm not doing it anymore. Though, I don't have any intention of stopping with the quail any time soon! They're such fun little guys!

Two weeks ago, @agramuglia uploaded the cut version of the stream he did with Charlie Knight on disability representation in fantasy worlds. And given that around the same time we had a bit of a discussion in my blog about the same issue in regards of BG3, I want to share some thoughts on this. Mind you, I am also picking up some stuff in regards to the amazing videos that Oakwyrm does on disability representation.

Because there are two topics that are so often not brought up in this context. And I am kinda saddened and a bit annoyed by this. So, let me talk about it. Because the topics of what kind of disability we see in fantasy and science fiction and what kind we don't see is actually a big topic.

Generally most fantasy disabilities fall into one of two categories:

Acquired disabilities (often in forms of missing limbs or a missing eye) that were acquired under dramatical, tragic, or heroic circumstances.

Fantasy-setting specific disabilities (for example a character who cannot fly in a setting, where everyone else can fly, or of course the classic "non-magic character in a magic world").

The first kind is the stuff we see probably most of. Again, often we see this in form of missing limbs, that depending on the setting are either replaced with some sort of magic prothesis. Ideally this is handled at least like it is in Fullmetal Alchemist, where the prothesis does not always work perfectly and needs some maintanance. Sadly, though, in a lot of cases the magic prothesis is perfect, and also other stuff that usually comes to play in regards of missing limbs (like phantom pain and related issues) do not really come to play.

Same goes with some sort of magical glass eyes and so on, if characters are missing an eye. I will not even start with the fact that glass eyes in fantasy are always perfect little balls rather than how those actually look in reality.

And either way: Usually the way those limbs and eyes have gone missing, there is really a big story behind it. In real life very typical ways for people to loose limbs is stuff like simple injuries that lead to infections, or accidents that were really kind of silly. Not in fantasy or scifi. There you do not geenrally lose a limb, unless you lose it to a dragon or devil (or I guess in a desperate attempt to revive your mother). There is always a good story behind it.

And then there are the other kind of disability we see, which the more metaphorical disability. Yes, within a world were everyone can do magic, the person who cannot do magic is disabled. Yes, within the world where everyone can fly, the person who cannot is also disabled. And yes, Karlach in Baldur's Gate 3 with her engine that is killing her has also a disability within the context of the world - as does Gale with his orb, or Shadowheart with her magic pain attacks. Heck, you could make the argument that in a way Astarion as a vampire also has magical disabilities.

But what bugs me so much about this is... The lack of all the stuff that does not get shown.

A lot of people have already spoken about how rarely we see some sort of wheelchair in fantasy settings. (In SciFi we often then see the flying wheelchairs, that are an issue on their own, though that is something I will have to talk about at another time.)

But there is so much more that we usually do not see.

Missing limbs make up around 7-8% of all disabled people. And those are mostly older people, given that - again - limb loss usually occurs because the body struggles to heal a wound and the limb needs to be amputated to prevent infactions from spreading and such. (Almost 90% of people who loose their limps are also older than 45 when they do.)

A lot of disabilities (the vast majorities) are in fact some sort of cognitive disabilities. And sure, we do see quite a few characters that are autism-coded or ADHD-coded in media. Exhibit A would be Dungeon Meshi, of course, but I mean, we all can probably name a few characters that read very autistic or hyperactive. But those are also usually the variations of those where yes, the characters might experience some disability from it, but... We do not have an autistic non-verbal protagonist, do we now?

And then there is of course all those other disabilities. I mean, I cannot imagine a single example of a character with trisomnie in fantasy or scifi media. I also have not seen a character with my disability (severely limited lung function) in fantasy or scifi before - even though, mind you, scifi could probably easily create a device that would allow someone like me to live fairly normally. You will also rarely ever find a character with something like athritis or other forms of rheumatic illness in fantasy and scifi settings. And generally speaking, with a few exceptions there are barely any characters who were born with their disabilities or have acquired their disabilities through sickness of one way or another - even though this is by far in the real world the most common way of acquiring a disability.

Other stuff we do not see: Limb differences, anything that is perceived as disfiguring (and even if those are described in books, they usually get toned down HEAVILY in movies or games, and of course anything that is related to food.

With this I am not saying that the other disabilities - those we see - are bad. But I am saying that we absolutely deserves to see those other disabilities too. And not just in some realworld drama stuff. (I mean, when it comes to depictions of a character with down syndrome in media, I can only think of one good example, which is Ansel in Stumptown, which is very much just crime drama. But that is like the one time I can think of that a character with that disability who is given agency by the plot, and who gets to have his own life, with a job, and a girlfriend and everything.)

And yeah...

Like, the two pieces of fantasy media I wanna point out as being actually pretty darn good with disability representation of a wide variety of disabilities are:

Witch Hat Atelier: This series basically focuses on the question of morality in regards to using magic to cure - and using magic to cure disabilities, too. Because of this, we see a variety of disabilities, including disabilities people were born with, disabilities acquired through sickness or through dramatic plot reasons and so on. This is really, really good in that regard.

The Witcher novel series: I hate it so much that this is something that all the adaptions just ignore. The Witcher books are very, very heavy in dealing with disabilities in a lot more realistic matters. The fact that magicians mostly are disabled people, for whom the society does not have any other use than learning magic (for whcih they get cured of their disability, and the books actually dare to quesiton "Is that a good thing?") is one part. But Geralt himself is fairly disabled, as he is dealing with chronic pain and has a limp. Gods, I would murder for a good adaption of these books

s3 episode 20 "jose chung from outer space" thoughts

dare i say it, once again… new favorite episode??

okay, my previous favorite episode was an ENTIRELY different direction from this one, but i’d say there should be one best episode for serious stuff and one best episode for the silly!!! and this takes the silly crown!! and tbh i can't make an actual hard and fast rating anyway because there are so many great things to choose from- but this is amongst them, for me, in terms of legendary episodes!

please, join me on this ride, which i enjoyed each second of, and will need to someday rewatch without pausing every 0.5 seconds to jot something i noticed down. the live experience begins beneath the cut.

it’s been 84 years…. (3 days since i’ve seen an episode)

ooo, this sounds interesting! is scully going to work with an author?? are we gonna learn more about the things that she reads?? this is prime content to a person like me

stars…. space ship….. filled with tubes and wires and other such things…… just kidding!!! it’s a guy working on some electrical stuff. whilst two people drive by!! i thought they were mulder and scully at first but they are not

“um, i don’t want to scare you, but i think i’m madly in love with you” says this guy who is not mulder but actually named harold to this girl who is not scully but is actually named chrissy. OH! and this is the first date. so that was a weird thing to say. i thought it was quite sweet at first but that changes things for sure.

GASP! UFO be upon them. creatures are coming out to get them. she asks what they are and he says “how the hell should i know?” ooo ooo i know! they are aliens 👽 and then the two fall on top of each other like they are knocked out… and the aliens drag them away????

until a king kong looking fellow rolls up. very puppet-y. and the aliens don’t know what this creature is either!!! and also ask what that thing is and the response is “how the hell should i know?” haha i see what you did there... out aliening the alien

bum bum bum bum…. (<- my attempt at recreating the noise of the intro)

now, what was that? i'm stuck on the king kong and godzilla love child puppet….

scan up on mulder’s iconic poster!!! and a guy is here who is yet again not mulder. his name is mr. chung and mulder will NOT talk to him… oooh, what is their beef…?

mr. chung is saying he always felt alienated on this planet, who can even imagine actual aliens! and he has a point there.

oh! scully is a big fan of this fellow, which is why she agreed to talk to this guy!!! he calls her beautiful, which is true, but time and place

so he isn’t even interested in aliens, but his publisher said he should write a book on the matter. he is going to create a NEW genre: non fiction science fiction, a gimmick that will give him money. this seems somewhat disappointing to scully, who must be a believer in artistic integrity, but i find his honesty refreshing.

she wants him to tell the truth, but apparently he spent 3 months in kass county where all this stuff went down, and NO ONE could tell him what actually happened. the truth is just as subjective as reality. which sounds like something i learned in history class. and, it helps explain why everyone with an alien story starts with some variation of, "i know this sounds crazy, but"...

so he wants HER version of hearing of the case. also he touches her arm and... let's slow down a little there, mr. chung.

OHHH we are seeing a story told in flashbacks!!!! narrated by scully!! how wonderful!!!

this girl is suffering from “missing time”, a phenomenon we have come to know well here on this blog. also her clothes are inside out and she has signs of abuse. not looking great for her.

apparently mulder prefers the term “abductee” to “experiencer”, which mr. chung has valid disagreements with. we go on, however.

this poor girl is seeing aliens that are not there and her nose is bleeding. WAIT! it’s the guy from before! harold and chrissy! he comes to her window to say he did everything he could but she rejects him, thinking he had drugged and assaulted her. yikes.

harold is testifying that he was abducted by aliens, but no one believes him. he stuck to his story UNTIL our agents arrived!

(MULDER SAYS SOMETHING VERY OUT OF POCKET HERE ABOUT GOING TO PRISON BUT LET'S KEEP MOVING)

despite this announcement of presumed prison time, mulder brings chrissy in for questioning. asking her if she has all the symptoms of “post abduction disorder”, which she confirms, while scully rolls her eyes with great force in the background. and he talks the girl’s parents into letting her do hypnosis.

“what is your opinion of hypnosis?”, mr. chung asks scully, which is something i also have been dying to know! i mean, we saw her do a little bit before, but it didn’t seem to be a positive experience. she says it has therapeutic value, but has never been proven to enhance memory; it even makes memory worse. a very balanced and doctor-ly answer!

LMAO scully is so cute… mr. chung mentions another book he wrote and she proclaims it “one of the greatest thrillers ever written” <- STOP I LOVE HER SHE IS SUCH A NERRRRD 😭😭

mr. chung said the FBI knew nothing about how hypnosis worked back during the MK ULTRA days… and he is fascinated by the idea of a person’s consciousness being transformed by listening to words. admittedly very fascinating! you could probably say the same about meditation, no?

(but he speaks to the power of storytelling, i realize now in hindsight! how we find ourselves wrapped up in the tales of things that never happened, how it fills us with sorrow or joy! how fascinating! i see what you did there, writers!)

cutscene to hypnotizing chrissy. who is seeing aliens. she is on a space ship wearing a fit that looks very similar to a lady gaga chromatica era performance, but it has tubes attached to her. harold is in a very similar contraption!!!!

she says the aliens are arguing without moving their mouths and she hears the lead alien in her head saying it’s for the good of her planet. and he is stealing her memories? um. for what purpose...

scully is serving looks in the corner while this goes down, looking mad as hell and very good. she says chrissy's abduction story seems a little TOO typical… and i have to agree! but mulder says no, there are TWO people with the same story! they can't both be lying, surely!

LMAOOOO they play with censoring the dude who comes in and yells at them… “well, of course he didn’t actually say ‘bleeped’”

(BAHAHA i’m loving this insight into how scully’s memories operate. so this angry man is named detective manners)

“you still gonna hold the boy?” “oh, you bet your blankety-blank bleep i am” <- i am a simple woman, and an actor delivering these lines with a straight face whilst surrounded by other actors keeping a very straight face is going to make me cackle. look at her looking so bored while he says that. i’m howling!!!!

anyway, harold has a very different story on what went down that night, that did not seem to involve gaga-inspired fits, but instead they were both placed in electrified cages. while another alien in a nearby cage smokes a cigarette. he seems to be what i would call “an unbothered king”

in this story, harold claims that he will protect chrissy and never let anything happen to her, and of course something immediately happens to her while he hides in the corner like a baby. lmao.

and this alien is talking in english! not telepathically! he keeps repeating “this is not happening” until harold ALSO gets taken by the thing that took chrissy.

mulder is trying to figure out what is going on, but his predictions aren’t lining up with what happened to harold. scully is pacing and looking pissed, and again, very pretty.

“you know when you’re a kid, and you tore the legs off a bug for no reason?”, asks harold (cutscene to mulder’s face with visible confusion) LMAOOOOOOO

scully getting to business: did you engage in consensual sexual intercourse that night? she is not messing around! she's had it up to here with the shenanigans of harold and chrissy!

harold is very very quiet until he says that her father will kill him if he finds out!!! gasp!!! confirmation!!!

so is this whole story just… a cover up??? for fornication???

scully vs mulder time. “so what if they’re having sex?” he asks, which is funny coming from him; and anyway, he claims it happened BEFORE the alien stuff went down. but she thinks they’re traumatized, and that is more likely than alien abduction.

until detective manners bursts in and claims he has an eyewitness to what went down! he used more blanks and bleeps and again the straight faces killllll me

and ALL OF THEM telling their stories start with “i know how crazy this all sounds” just as mr. chung had described LMAOOO. now who tf is this dude who says he was an eyewitness?

(i’m taking soooo many notes because i keep laughing and noting things. which is a good problem to have!)

this dude, named roky, spent 48 hours straight writing down what he saw, and said that by looking at this, they are putting their lives in danger. so okay. better be juicy.

he says his garage door opened up, a car pulled in, and a man told him some facts about venus. he says they put him in a trance! and that they were in all black……

mr. chung says that myths of men in black garments are nothing new!!! so take THAT, men in black legends, you are one of many.

back at roky's place, the other dude in black says jimmy carter thought he saw a UFO once, but it was just venus. roky is scandalized, grabs his paper, and states that he is a REPUBLICAN.

(omg jimmy carter is going to be 100 in a few months god willing…..)

this man in black is saying that roky saw VENUS and nothing else, just VENUS. and not to tell anyone he saw anything but VENUS or he will die. and then the car drives away.

so after that build up, he gives mulder the manuscript, and says he is packing up and leaving. bye bye roky. hope you find some peace.

mulder is reading this story to scully who is sprawled on the bed, looking, again, angry and hot. it seems he is describing that earlier puppet-y action.

oh! roky was the electrical guy from the very beginning!!! he hides in his truck but the king kong looking fellow says “be not afraid” and that he is needed for the good of the earth? what is with the good of the earth here.

cutscene to a very baffled looking scully laying in bed as mulder continues to read LMAOOOOOO

AND ROKY’S STORY SAYS HE WENT NOT TO OUTER SPACE, BUT INNER SPACE HELPPP!!!! now, inner space is towards the core, if you, like me, were unaware. also, king kong godzilla dude’s name is Lord Kinbote, so jot that down.

mr. chung says he has a copy of roky’s manifesto- which was sent to his publisher? and LMAOOO the story is disturbing both for its soul orgy scenes and the fact that it is written as a screenplay

well, surely your partner didn’t believe any of it, mr. chung states! “mulder’s had his share of peculiar notions” is scully's carefully worded reply... LMAOOO

cutscene to her sitting up from the bed and calling him nuts <- LMAOOOOO but HE says that whatever roky saw may have triggered some delusions, and that the only story that doesn’t add up is chrissy’s, so he is calling to get her re-hypnotized, much to scully’s indignation!

so back to the hypnosis. and chrissy is now mirroring harold's story exactly. oh! she says the people who took them are from the air force?? so where did the gaga slay outfits go...

the air force men are arguing in front of her. and then they say to “rinse her out”. saying it is for the good of her country. and stealing her memories!

so WHO is doing the real memory stealing here….. the aliens or the government?? an age old question!!! one that is at the heart of this series.

scully and mulder fight over what is going on, and he thinks that this might have nothing to do with aliens, until detective manners shows up with news that a crazy blankety blank claims to have an ALIEN BODY!!

(what if it’s a raccoon with mange…)

again, the man recounting this story begins with “i know how crazy this is going to sound”, but then says he wants to be abducted by aliens. well! i’m sure that’s a sexual thing i don’t care to unpack.

cutscene to mr. chung interviewing this same man, who wishes to go where finding a job is not a requirement. he was looking in a field for UFOs. and when he called the authorities upon spotting one, the agents show up!!

he says that scully was a man dressed as a woman but not pulling it off??? RUDE AS HELL! jail for 10,000 years. "HER HAIR WAS A LITTLE TOO RED, YOU KNOW?" LMAOOOOO and mulder was the “tall, lanky one” with a blank expression. well yeah that is an accurate depiction.

AND ACCORDING TO THIS GUY'S ACCOUNT, WHEN MULDER SEES THE BODY, HE SHRIEKS LIKE A STARTLED SQUIRREL I’M CRYINGGGG. so scully says to wrap this body up!

BUT THEN SHE GRABS HIM AND SAYS TO NEVER TELL ANYONE HE SAW THIS I’M CRYINGGGG... that had to be such a silly scene to film

okay, seeing the part about subjective truths now. this is so funny... why is this loser making scully a hater in his version!!!

she’s PISSED to hear he claims she said this LMAOOO and that is ridiculous!! they even let him view the autopsy!!

so mulder takes this weirdo’s camera and records the autopsy?? scully cuts his brain open. and the tape ends up on late night television LMAOOOO

SCULLY IS SO EMBARRASSED THAT SHE IS ON THIS ALIEN HOAX AUTOPSY TAPE... I’M CRYING SOMEONE SAVE HER!!! and the host of whatever show they end upon is STUPENDOUS YAPPI FROM THE CLYDE BRUCKMAN EPISODE!!!! i'm howlingggg

she’s mad that whoever got the film edited out all the important scientific findings!!! like the two layers of skin!!!

wait. it’s a zipper. this is a dead guy in an alien suit. LMAOOOOOOOOO

the weird UFO cameraman kid is ill after realizing it was an ordinary dead guy, and scully looks deeply pained as he runs away to get sick LMAOOO

so: who is this dead guy? he was in the air force! and his name is robert. but who arrives but more people from the air force!! are they here to bury him?? or question the agents…

the folks from the air force want robert back, so she has to break the news that he is dead, and being kept for investigation into kidnapping. can they see him? scully is like yeah sure but mulder says no!!! but you CAN talk to the other AWOL guy we brought in. GASP!! a bluff!!! and it works!! from this they learn there is another missing guy!

LMAOOOO except it doesn’t go as smoothly as intended, and mulder is all “hmm he was here a few minutes ago… guess he’s still AWOL… anyway wanna see the body?” I’M CRYING THIS MANNNN IS SO RIDICULOUS

but bad news: the body is gone.

cameraman UFO guy is sitting on his floor watching the autopsy tape. when in bursts… the men in black from the earlier garage scene!!!! they knock him out.

he claims mulder slapped him back to reality. and that he ALSO threatened him... me when i lie.

so mulder doesn’t have the tape. but when he drives home a fully naked man is walking about in the woods. it’s the other missing lieutenant, jack!! he is repeating “this is not happening” in the same voice as the alien as before!!!!! HUH WHAT IS GOING ON?

mulder takes jack to eat. he claims to have piloted the "UFO", and that all the abductions are military stuff, and at the base the abductees are messed with mentally, until they come out convinced they were probed by aliens.

well okay, if its all the government, than what abducted YOU, jack? he isn’t sure about anything at all anymore, even if he exists. until who walks in... but the military!!

wait, mulder points out, it can’t all be fake- who was the third alien? jack seems to know him by name- lord kinbote. HUH?

and mr. chung heard a story about that same night from the cook at the restaurant! apparently mulder ordered sweet potato pie? huh, that’s interesting. and he kept ordering more and more pies with each question he asked the chef. LMAOOOO I just KNOW that scene was hard to film!!!! scenes where people eat always make me wonder how many times they had to have that damn bite of pie.

but he claims there was no jack, nor any air force personnel at all. just a hungry mulder. again, so what is the truth...

mr. chung points out that scully doesn’t seem too phased to learn about all the contradictions in this story, and she says well no, not after what happened next. because when he got back to the motel, the men in black were in her room, going through her stuff! they claim she went to get some ice. he’s got 'em at gunpoint, screaming WHERE IS SHE!!! all protective, okay i see you. but she really did go to get some ice???

okay… man in black says that some alien encounters are engineered by the government and then exposed to discredit truth seekers. and mulder counters, well, people say the men in black also do purposefully strange things, so that anyone describing them sounds crazy! they proceed to… try and hypnotize him?

BUT IT’S ALEX TREBEK WHO IS DOING THE HYPNOTIZING???? LMAOOOOO HAS HE BEEN THE QUIET MAN IN BLACK THIS WHOLE TIME??

mr. chung is GAGGED, and wants to know if it WAS alex trebek, but sadly scully cannot confirm, for has no memory of this!!

she woke up the next morning to mulder in her room….? and mr. chung is also gagged to hear this. me too tbh like did he just sleep on the couch? well we know that is how he sleeps at home so i guess i'm not shocked.

mulder’s trying to explain that she didn’t just "let him in" last night, but detective manners calls and says they found a bleeping UFO.

and what is it but…. a plane!! a secret plane!! and who are they carrying away on stretcher but the missing airmen, jack and robert???? SO HOW DID THEY DIE!

mr. chung puts his pen down, baffled, and scully points out that this story may not have a lot of closure, but it’s more than some of their other cases, which is funny because it is true. and she’s playing with her earrings and it’s so cute.

cutscene to mr. chung typing at his place. until a shadow approaches and he holds a tiny gun!!!! he is ready for a showdown but it’s… mulder at the door?

WAIT how does chung recognize him… did scully show him pictures i'm crying

mulder is in chung's apartment, asking him to not write the book, because it will do a disservice to a field that has always struggled to maintain credibility. we can’t understand these alternate realities yet!!! well. compelling argument... but mr. chung needs a paycheck.

OH! and mulder suspects that the book is a “covert agenda” of the military industrial complex. always theories upon theories with this guy...

mr. chung says the book WILL be written, but he needs an explanation from mulder: what really happened to those kids on that night?

his answer: how the hell should i know?

(it was so perfect, i thought the episode would end right here)

mr. chung says he has deadlines, and mulder looks very sad, very previously neglected shelter dog rizz, and walks out. back to mr. chung’s furious typing.

okay, so the cameraman now works for the electrical company roky worked for. because roky moved to california, preaching on purification and the inner earth and core enlightenment. right right right makes sense.

cutscene to scully reading the finished book by mr. chung!!! she is fictionalized as “diane” who is “noble of spirit and pure of heart” but “nevertheless a federal employee” LMAOOOO

and mulder is “renard muldrake” LMAOOOOO that is such a funny name... he's watching something in bed shirtless as his fictionalized self is being described- “a ticking time bomb of insanity” AND HE’S WATCHING THE BIGFOOT TAPES BAHAHAHAHA

chrissy now is an environmental advocate and harold still loves her but it isn’t required. aww harold :(

mr. chung ends by saying that we are not alone in this universe, but in our own way, we are all alone.

NEW BEST EPISODE CONTENDER???

this feels like one of those posts where people make up a bunch of information and then it all gets proven wrong so it is described as a "net zero information gain" bahaha

but don't get me wrong, i don't fully understand what happened, but i loved it. i was laughing, i was enjoying seeing the subjectivity of one story to the next, i was enjoying scully and chung time, and despite all the silly, we still got clues on the whole "is it aliens or the government" thing. and sure, maybe it doesn't make immediate sense, but you have to ponder these matters to learn what is at their heart!

so what DID we learn? well, some alien cases might be the government! but i guess that is still a "might", so maybe we can't truthfully say we LEARNED it. we learned that scully is a big fan of mr. chung!!! we learned that mulder is fiercely protective of his line of work from all his years of being ridiculed! and that he watches the famous bigfoot tape for fun and also maybe like sweet potato pie? it was unconfirmed.

i really enjoyed the playing with perspective, seeing how one character saw things, and then another. and seeing mulder and scully threaten that dweeb was so funny because it was so out of character and had to be silly to shoot.

and i thought it was impressive how it managed to tie back to the big alien and government mystery while still making me laugh so hard. how many past episodes can be analyzed through the lens of certain things being faked for exposure? and what REALLY happened to those airmen? we still don't know if mulder's convo with jack even happened! and we never will!

i came to appreciate the company of mr. chung immensely, even though i thought he was gonna be creepy after calling scully beautiful and touching her arm, but i suppose that he was just a genuinely sweet fellow. you can't blame me for being suspicious after some of the things she gets put through, but i'm sure that if i picked one of his books off the shelf, i, like scully, would be a fan.

overall, i am deeply pleased, and would love to give this a rewatch sometime when i am not taking notes so i could appreciate the pacing in more detail. man, season 3 has really been killing it, huh? and i'm nearing the end!!

My name is Ley (pronounced like "Lee," she/they) and I'm a fiction writer/editor based in the PNW. I haven't done a proper writeblr intro in a while, so I figure the new year is a great time to reintroduce myself to the community!

An important thing to understand about me and the way I talk about writing is that this stuff is literally my entire life. Even outside of work, I don't think I have a single interest or hobby that doesn't relate back to storytelling in some capacity. I'm an avid media consumer and critic, and will hyperanalyze just about anything that catches my fancy for more than a minute.

I love science fiction and fantasy, and my goal as a writer is to take all the genres I loved growing up and create stories that are a little more diverse, inclusive, and queer.

I came to writeblr mostly to share my work, but also to find an active community where I can get excited with other writers and talk shop. Marketing is obviously a really important part of the publishing industry, but I get tired of having to filter every thought I have about my work and experiences through the lens of aesthetic micro-trends just to put it out in the world. Sometimes I just want to pop off about scenes I'm proud of, you know?

Above all else, I really just want to connect with more writers like myself, ones who got their start in fandom spaces and are working to take their writing from a hobby into a career. I see you, I am you, I love you, let's be friends!

I write a lot, though most of it is disconnected nonsense. Flash fiction and short stories are where I really thrive as a writer. I don't tend to commit to long-form projects, but I have a few projects that I'll occasionally share details about!

I like to describe my style as "earnest and character-forward," which is a fancy way of saying that I like driven protagonists who think too much and are emotional to the point of it being a character flaw.

My goal is to share more of my original writing moving forward, so hopefully you'll get to see all of this for yourself. If I'm totally honest, though, you'll probably see more of me discussing my work than actually writing it.

Agnomen: A sci-fi retelling of Hamlet and Coriolanus, currently in its very preliminary stages. It is literally my Roman Empire, except it's set on a moon of a planet that I'm calling Jupiter as a placeholder (but please note that it isn't actually Jupiter, as Jupiter is a gas giant and therefore a scientifically impossible setting for large sections of the plot).

Alter Ego: A superhero fic in which not-so-mild-mannered reporter Drew Derrick fights for mutant rights and can't seem to get his act together when it comes to keeping the complicated parts of his life separate.

Untitled Fantasy Project: The very first project I ever wrote, and the piece I return to every so often when writing is feeling more like a slog than a fun hobby. I set a lot of one-offs in this world and follow a few key characters around without them having a real plot.

D&D: I write a lot about Baz, my Wild Magic Barbarian. He's a regency noble with a lot of problems, and I care about him very much. I also have various other settings and characters, but he's my most active PC at the moment and therefore gets the most attention.

Short Stories: Sometimes I write these, and sometimes I like them enough to share!

Hen is a hard-working office worker who does their best, Despite having this sweet and confident personality, Hen has self-doubts and insecurity that they’re won't show. Hen is very friendly and nice to everyone at work, they’re not exactly extroverted people but not introverted either. Hen is stubborn and persistent and don’t gives up easily;

Hen met Michael and Mark in high school, the three went from classmates to friends; Hen was shy back then since she was a new student. Hen has a mischievous and sassy side, especially when when they and Mark are gossiping. Hen doesn't hate their boss but they doesn't like him either. They try to be as polite as possible with him even if they are insulted;

Mark is a office worker who doesn't give a damn and just do his job on impulse.

No one knows how no one fired him or he didn't quit himself even though he dislike his job, or better said...his boss; Mark can be indifferent, blunt and sarcastic. He’s generally uptight, deadpan and rude sometimes despite having a rude and tough attitude, he’s a nice guy;

He has been friends with Michael since elementary school and during high school he met Hen who went from being classmates to friends. Mark doesn't have a good relationship with his boss, and he mentally curses or talks badly about him behind back;

-Mark is pathetic and awkward around women, especially tall ones. He’s afraid to talk to them because he thinks they’re pretty and will rip his head off;

-Mark can fix computer problems and stuff since he has a degree in computer science. Speaking of computers and technology stuff, he loves playing video games;

-He gets irritated easily by disorganization, repetitive noises and when he has to repeat the same thing the person don't get it;

-Mark was religious like his family when he was younger but now he is not. And that's ironic, since his bug form is a praying mantis;

-He consumes a lot of energy drinks, and you can imagine his trash can full of cans;

oh gosh. i think you accept drabbles like mychlapi does sometimes? oh gosh if this is weird just delete it i may die of embarrassment bc i never like… talk abt smut ever. but you might be the only person who understands My Thots and i’ll otherwise explode so

Tarantulas. and Prowl. they’re gonna try again. you know. make some Springer 2.0s but now while antagonistically and lovingly married and also. yknow. less test tubes and more closer to how organics do things. but both their sparks are kinda busted right and it’s better if you have all the forge business and the sparkbudding business going on in the same frame so uh

so they ask First Aid. and that’s a good fit because he’s a little freaky but also he’s been visiting to dabble with Tarantulas’s lab stuff together so it’s not even that weird to ask and he’s supportive and says yes. and. well. i’m going to die of embarrassment! but okay

Aid. is kind of into pretending to be a science experiment, sometimes. soooo he and Tarantulas get silly with it and that’s a good time. and then Prowl is actually kinda chill when he’s relaxed and having sex so that’s good too! um. there’s other stuff but i’m too fckin shy and might perish so. that’s all for now, thanks for reading

Also the idea of First Aid visiting Tarantulas' lab... Intriguing! Very intriguing! Never thought about that dynamic, but I'm interested now.

Anyway. To the weird sex part! Love that Prowl and Tarantulas got back together after everything, the absolute freaks. And immediately get into baby making as well alfjalkgkalf. They probably went "ah yes, more babies... Wait fuck. We both had terrible self care. Neither of us can support a baby"

*cut to First Aid walking into the lab*

"hey you guys! what's going on?"

Prowl and Tarantulas, sharing a look: yeah, he'll do.

They probably come up to him with a whole power point of reasons why he is an Ideal Candidate to become their surrogate, plus a like 50 step plan for how they'll achieve this. Meanwhile First Aid is just like "you want me to spend my time getting constantly railed by two mechs? Sign me UP"

They then get to the part, and of course Prowl and Tarantulas are like, highly meticulous about it all, which low-key turns First Aid on. The detail is very flattering. On GOD they're going to get him robot pregnant. And if he proves to be successful with the first one... Well. It'd be a waste of an experiment to see if there's not a faster way for them to knock him up. Gotta do a few more.

Headcannons: Urahara Kisuke

Heyo tumblr, for anyone that knows me it's no surprise I love this dork and have a slight bleach hyperfocus (not slight at all, thanks Philza for getting me onto it). And Urahara is probably my favorite character, not only in bleach, but in fiction, I do have a sort of list of characters I love in general and he is on number 6 in a list of 262 characters. So needless to say I got A LOT of hc of him.

Note: yes you can count some of them for C!Philza, bc I'm silly and Phil def got some inspiration writing wise.

Also thanks to @saranel (which is one of my fav blogs bleach wise even though it has no updates in AGES) since she inspires a lot of my headcannons and analysis for Kisuke.

Without further delay, let's get into it.

These headcannons are a bit all over the place but I talk a lot about science related stuff (but I do plan on making a separate post ONLY about scientist Kisuke, more specifically MAD scientist Kisuke) it's a bit of everything so enjoy

• First of all, Kisuke is a person with trust issues, this is obvious considering how he acts towards others during the series, but even more so when you notice we've never been shown his lab, room or any interiors that he spends a lot of time on aside from the shop, which makes me think he never lets ANYONE inside. The only exception being Yoruichi, Tessai, Ururu and Jinta. After all, they are the closest thing he has of family (a found family if you will), and spaces such as his room and lab are too personal, a place where he put his soul and time onto, not only to feel comfortable but bc is where he can hide from the outside and focus on his projects and curiosity without worrying about others or being too vulnerable.

• His lab is quite neat normally, but, when he gets IN THE ZONE. He definitely has a messy lab, coffee cups, snacks (if he even cares about eating), papers, components, materials, and everything scattered, probably has a futon laid on the floor (which Kisuke didn't want to place, it was Tessai worried for his friend's health since HE WAS SLEEPING UNDERNEATH THE TABLE OR IN THE CHAIR FOR *DAYS OR EVEN WEEKS*) which has some plushie and pillows and a single blanket, prob has a ton of books in the tables too and in general a messy place that only makes to him

• Kisuke IS a clingy sleeper, Yoruichi can't escape when they are together sharing the same bed since he clings onto her like a pale octopus, or a claw arcade machine and with a bear tight grip. So he def owns a couple of plushies or soft pillows for hugging when he can't have her near this way he doesn't feel alone

• Kisuke definitely spends some time searching about random science facts, experiments and so on, I like to think while he is smart, he is more smart towards technology,human mind wise and battle wise science fields, so he tends to search more about those specific topics in depth, being a poison master.

• Due to his passion for science, he started collecting books, rare documents and archives, rare samples of experiments, things like specific components still in development and so on, and keeps it all in a secret place in his lab

• Sexuality and gender wise, I view Kisuke as either bi or pan, he definitely experimented a bit of everything and that included different gendered partners and he found out he likes it, so yeah. Gender wise, Urahara in at least japanese uses non-binary but also female speech, which made me think perhaps he would be interested in crossdressing but also that he falls into the category of a man who doesn't care or want to fit the male stereotypes and expectations, plus probably wouldn't care THAT much for gender, so you can say either he is a cis man that only vibes with feminine stuff, or he is agender (which I like a lot), hell you can go as far to say he could even be genderfluid.

But in a resume so I don't make a whole ass post about this: pan or bi, agender or just feminine man.

• Video game nerd, BUT MORE IMPORTANT, A NINTENDO STAN. I view that his favorite Nintendo franchises would be Zelda and Mario, hell maybe he would even cosplay Link

• he totally went NUTS when Minecraft was released (considering bleach takes place in 2002 in the beginning so...yep) and def loves to play Minecraft (cof cof Philza) in his free time, would make a server for everyone to join, be a redstone nerd and only play in hardcore or in super modded servers.

• He would absolutely LOVE to make complex farms that break EVERY SINGLE LIMIT in the game scripts, plus make builds that take AGES to make and call it simple, plus he'd love the game since it's a great way to teach the kids stuff and practice everyone's creativity while hanging around in a fun way

• Would get famous in Karakura due to being a REALLY good player in any types of videogames, but then would brush it off as "just a hobby" to make kids feel better and keep trying to improve (while maybe selling merch in the shop to improve in the games.)

• When he came to the human world, he became CRAZY for coffee, he likes it pure black, no sugar, sometimes adds cream but that's it

• Loves to watch announcements of new technologies and discuss how he could improve them, or how he is impressed by how far they are coming, plus he loves 64 and 32 bits but was MARVELED at the first 3D he saw like a Nintendo 64 type or 3D and couldn't stop talking about "how realistic" it was getting and how he is excited for the future of technology

• He isn't a programmer, but I think he has knowledge of how to code stuff, I could imagine if he needed to expand his store or be away for too long or be needed in 2 different places, I can imagine Kisuke coding an 64 bits version of himself to welcome people to the store, kinda like a recording or prototype ai to talk with people about certain things while he is away and it would be a lot of different screens with different dialog and functions

• Loves to paint his nails and would make the craziest designs and show it off to everyone, but his to go nails are either:

A- plain black

B- green and white nails matching his hat

• I'm 100% convinced he owns multiple pairs of the same clothing. I'm talking like straight up 50 hats, same samue, same pants, same geta, SAME EVERYTHING. AND HE WILL POUT AND GET MAD IF FORCED TO CHANGE.

• autism codded. That's all I'm saying

• Probably a fan of metal music, baby metal too, hell he'd be CRAZY about vocaloid and his favorite would be Miku, Vflower and Len (perhaps kaito too)

• He is a big fan of going to temples to talk about the history of the place, how religion shaped the culture in Japan, why each temple is special, and despite being an atheist (and proud of it) he prob bought one or two fans from their gift shops because he finds them extra pretty and detailed

What's the origin of your blog title? "Vol'jin Deserves Better" comes from my belief that the character, Vol'jin deserves a better outcome than he got. Sure they may bring him back, but he was just kinda sloughed off like rotten bark, and it pissed me the fuck off ):

OTP(s) + Shipname: Jayvik and Zaundads. (That's Jayce x Viktor and Silco x Vander both from Arcane) I don't think I had a pairing before that I was as invested in as I am with Jayvik, so I can't really say I've ever had OTPs before this, in a more serious way (I have bought fanmerch for Jayvik which I have never done before)

What were you like as a child? Unruly. I was diagnosed with ADHD and Aspergers as a child. (Really unusual for AFABs to be diagnosed, but I was. I was 11!)

Favorite subject at school? History. I was always good with that.

Least favorite subject: Maths. I'm TERRIBLE at math.

What's your best character trait? I had to phone-a-friend for this one (Thanks Figaroni!) She says I'm a passionate and excitable person!

What's your worst character trait? I can be immensely negative about circumstances or if I can't find a solution to a problem, I can shutdown and become critical of the situation. Additionally, I get frustrated easily too and deal with what's called Low Frustration Tolerance. This is common for people with ADHD!

If you could change any detail of your life right now, what would it be? I would change out my GI tract for a functional one so I'm not stuck not going out and not doing things as often due to GI problems.

If you could travel in time, who would you like to meet? I'd like to meet Mozart, I think!

Hi guys! I’m bored so i made a blog for my kinito AU, you guys can ask them stuff if you want. Here is some stuff about the silly guys in this AU plus some other random yapping

So uh, this is a lil silly guy. He’s very obsessive over his friends/the user and gets jealous easily. He really likes vintage stuff and collects dvds (even if though he doesn’t have a dvd player) he just likes collecting random stuff. His section of the web world kinda looks like a mix of the ocean, glitchcore, weirdcore, and like, the bliss image core, whatever that aesthetic is. If you couldn’t tell already, one of his eyes is…. Silly, we’ll say. Anyways hes usually really friendly but sometimes can be a bit possessive.

Though sometimes he’ll stay in his room for days at a time and refuse to leave cuz he’s researching stuff/coding. Because he’s so sleep deprived he’ll often fall asleep either at his computer or randomly when hanging out with his friends.

okay full disclosure:

(1) this is sort of a response to all the different things i've seen over the past few years re: general media and shipping discourse and chucking it all into 1 post. this ended up being longer than planned so it's a lil staggering but w/e.

(2) lots of stream of consciousness ahead, i'll be throwing out a lot of ideas out at once, because i just need to ramble and felt the need to get all these thoughts off my chest lmao, and it feels silly writing all this out considering i try to maintain a 0-discourse policy on my blog (at least at length), but if you do make it past even a few paragraphs (no fr this is stupid long, but i feel better now so that's what counts LMAO), i give you a salute and this: 🎖

i feel goofy using terms like 'pro' and 'anti' b/c it feels very high school to me lmao but anyway-- i'm not really trying to set the stage for a panel discussion and debate (i have this fear of being dragged into some public spectacle and i have no intent to squabble with people, respectfully) but it's effective shorthand for now.

anyway, i think pro/anti ship discourse is bleak (particularly wrt people who ID w/ the 'antiship' school of thought), and a net 0 all around.

you'll walk down the street and ask people to define what each term means and they'll all have different answers, particularly antis. 'problematic' is subjective. 'icky' is subjective, and mealy-mouthed.

like. portrayal is not endorsement. depiction is not normalization. you're entitled to your tolerances, but avoiding what you find disturbing or off-putting is your responsibility.

but also? it's... healthy to live with some discomfort. learning to regulate your emotions, responses to things, etc. that's. that's part of life. i agree w/ curating your experiences online but i still follow people who said things i disagree with because it's good for the ecosystem. some biodiversity. echo chambers can be bad.

i've seen young adults (trying to extend some grace/understanding to teenagers in this context) equally clutch their pearls at the most and least dramatic 'questionable/dark' stuff. like. a 15-year+ age gap btwn 2 adults feels just as much of a suckerpunch as incest. idk, have your squicks, but the lack of varying tolerance for things is nuts.

if everything just outside of a coffee shop au is bad then there's no real meaning in anything anymore. you can't attribute the same value to things that can carry different weight contextually.

anyway lmao there are many things i find abhorrent, but i think the blanket approach taken in anti circles is reactionary and reductive, if not simply parroting others.

too many terms have been overused and conflated where they shouldn't be - 'trigger' when you mean discomfort or disgust, 'problematic' as moral damnation when you really just find something off-putting or questionable, 'romanticization' when something merely exists as-is onscreen, with no spoonfeeding finger-wagging to you the viewer about how bad and evil xyz thing is, etc whatever.

i think this whole phenomenon is strange, and it's created a wave of people who are not only hypervigilant when it comes to media but also lack some, idk, basic common-sense level of good faith in an audience. terrible people can produce really moving work, and kind people can produce really disturbing work. i hate sounding snarky about it, but this isn't rocket science, and yet people keep relearning it over and over again.

it's interesting how fast things move on the internet. but i've noticed consistently the pearl-clutchers tend to be <25-26 y/o. and, like. i say this with concern but no judgement because it seems to be a strong combination of personal tastes and preferences, exacerbated by circumstances/culture.

i don't seek out discourse blogs, and i make an effort not to hatescroll because all it does is raise my blood pressure lmao. but i've observed enough over the years to recognize that some trends are still holding p consistently. i just kinda hope that whatever 20-something y/o is losing their mind over a ship with a 10 year age gap for ex, they'll grow out of it.

like, i get it. some set dressing i suppose: i struggled with it, too. not in the 'is this problematic?' sense b/c IME that really wasn't a framework back then, but simply put - certain things fascinated me in fiction but felt forbidden, questionable, too 'dirty.'

i also grew up in a xian household and the whole purity/'god is watching' element also stuck in my head for a good while. idk. life things.

using the word 'peers' here feels silly, but i noticed the ones who are more lax about it tend to be older -- i guess we simply grew up in a different time. our relationship to books, movies, media, fandom/ships, canon-divergence/crack, etc, the internet -- everything was different. pre-homogenization of the internet, back when things were less sanitized (as an aside - man does anyone remember how gnarly Antz was? i rewatched it and i was like damn this movie got dark lol).

I don’t even really consider myself a Fandom Old, but I did grow up while the internet was still pretty new - and seeing the cultural shifts in real time has been jarring.

i guess when you grow up in a time where the internet was new (and i'll use the beheading videos, a dramatic example but bear with me-- it's meant to be illustrative, the real disturbing stuff was easier to run into back then), you can compartmentalize and determine what warranted moral outrage. like. I think being aware/exposed to certain things, things that have materially impacted people, puts more stuff in perspective.

But people are more vocal now, and groups tend to treat the loudest voice in the room as the authority on any given matter. a lot of the self-censorship and anxiety around what we see when it comes to engaging with media, processing, or even creating anything now is taught, reminds me of learned helplessness.

and, idk. my grandma married my 20-something y/o grandpa when she was 14 (no, this did not happen in the US). it's very hard for me to drop to my knees at the sight of some questionable fictional content when i know things like that happen irl. again. compartmentalizing. putting things in perspective. real people can hurt people. i don't think anyone is entitled to my history, but it's very possible that someone else in my shoes might react more strongly to a depiction of things i experienced than i do. like, that's fine, but the sweeping generalizations and assertions of what is acceptable, what isn't by mere virtue of having experienced them... it doesn't help anyone. i've seen multiple people in 1 thread more than once argue over what is ok and what isn't in fiction, and using their own experiences as a gotcha. and it just. didn't go anywhere. dldr, maybe.

it's sad, in a way? the virtue signaling, the bad faith, 1-dimensional arguments ('oh so you MUST be a pedo 💀’) and lack of nuance. like idk man i have rl friends who shipped shimadacest and wincest and they have perfectly normal relationships w/ their siblings with no skeletons in their closets, and we'd just go to dinner and gab and laugh about all sorts of things lmao. people contain multitudes.

I wasn't sure where to insert this additional point - but re: “darkfic.” What does that mean, really? (Rhetorical, don’t answer this.) why is whump and angst socially acceptable, but not whatever your-individual-definition of a dark ship or darkfic? I’ve seen people portray a 14 y/o fan-favorite character as brutally injured, ill, and abused, but the moment he’s aged up to be shipped with an adult — you see nothing but outrage.

Whump is very kink-adjacent, even if it’s not overtly sexual, yet somehow socially acceptable. It’s still charged. Idk. Again. These lines are informally taught, these lines are arbitrary. I would say it’s dishonest to argue otherwise. we joke about putting our blorbos in scenarios, make that man bleed and cry!!1 but consider where you draw your lines. why? do you find yourself cherry-picking scenarios and casting moral judgements based on what is socially acceptable? the point isn't that whump and angst should be a taboo, but there's like an awareness when it comes to this stuff that people seem to conveniently meander around.

and, arguably, all this stuff -- it's not that deep. (if you want to distill any point from this accidental dissertation, it honestly? would be that.) it isn't that deep. the call to action could be really just to sit with your discomfort, and dig into why you feel the way you do. where those feelings come from. what should matter. introspect and reflect on your relationship w/ media and norms/expectations, and where some of your ideas may have come from, and how some others may have become internalized.

do you need to cast a moral judgement on everything you dislike or could you simply just say you think it sucks. a lot of things don't pass the vibe check for me and i'm content being a simple hater instead of exhausting myself with moral gymnastics or pathologizing people who are into a certain ship, trope, whatever.

a 'dni' is loaded in its own way. you're reducing your own ability to compartmentalize, and you're also reducing others to what 2d dolls they smash around in their head. it's strange, it's stilted. i cannot relate to it as an approach to navigating social spaces as a whole. i was hanging out at my friends' apartment a few weeks ago, and a group of us were just talking about how bizarre and alienating and sad it must be to grow up in today's internet. i'll repeat myself on this, but there's no room to experiment with your interests, there is no room to make a mistake. no room to give someone the benefit of the doubt, or engage without distilling them based on whatever content they consume or produce. and this stuff ends up hurting indie/queer creators anyway - they're an easier target if you're (general you!) sweatily writing up a callout post with the intent of making sure it hurts. and look at you! you spoke up, our town hero.

there are things i find disturbing. upsetting. i can, and do, question the intent. (like i watched a serbian film a million years ago. i still dwell on it. it was fucked up, as intended) but it's, at the very least in most cases, subjective and relative. life and people's inclination to tell stories are both too big to put into these types of boxes.

i think there's a greater conversation that can be had about media education/literacy, red flags, etc -- but on a basic, bare-bones level. like. the lines i see people draw are nuts. i don't mean to sound older than i am, but i've seen how the panopticon's grown over the past few years -- and it feels like it's only accelerated as a result of corporations swallowing everything up + the political climate. and when you're younger, you want to belong, being cast out feels like the end of the world. but ultimately, there is no room to make mistakes or change anymore. you're either a 'pedo 💀' or not. it's. it's no way to perceive the world man LMAO.

with all that said /gestures vaguely - i guess i'm just frustrated because on one hand, it's the nature of the beast, esp if you're young. we want to be accepted by others. you probably grew up in a conservative household, you want to be a good person - i hope we all do. you might very well be repressed and fearful of making a mistake at the same time. but on the other, i'm not seeing as much consideration for what it means to be uncomfortable, and why the sandbox that fiction offers can simply be fun. i know some describe it as cathartic, depicting XYZ Problematic Thing if you were a survivor, and how that helps, but only then can you produce such work!! and those hard rules are arbitrary. and absurd, for many reasons.

i'm thinking about a couple -- married cosplayers who came out and mentioned that a showrunner (take a shot if you know who!) had - from what i recall - essentially harassed them in their dms, made them feel insanely uncomfortable and violated. really seemed like he was fetishizing their relationship and preying on them being fans of the show for gratification and engagement. it was weird, and gross. but the fandom this happened in - it's small. word travels fast. and i noticed, after a few minutes of scrolling on one of the wives' twitter pages, that one in particular was really into shipping some underage character and it had the whole deal like underage/incest all that. and she was very honest about it being problematic, etc. i found it off-putting because it doesn't appeal to me, personally, but my feelings there are ultimately irrelevant. taking some perspective -- these people were impacted in the real world by a flesh-and-bone bad actor, with no evidence they themselves did anything untoward outside of unsavory fictional content.

and -- idk -- but i noticed how quiet people got when there was a golden opportunity (to be frank here) to collectively shit on a showrunner the fandom not only loves to hate (and, yeah, justified - dude's a weirdo conservative and has a mean, noxious, boorish personality from all i can gather) but looks to dunk on every chance they can. but the crickets were very... telling. you had real-life people who were actually harmed by another real-life person, but i saw little to nothing about it in a space that typically prides itself in being so victim-oriented and progressive.

my conclusion is that people wanted to distance themselves from the shipping baggage. i saw a couple people essentially punctuate the news with "but watch out!! they're problematic :/" lord forbid your sympathy could be perceived as negligence, as an endorsement of the victims' fictional interests beyond the scope of what they actually experienced irl. the fictional character take precedence, not these real-life people who were harmed by someone who had an established reputation for being a terrible boss, validation-seeker, and an alt-right ally.

i'm being redundant - but it felt very strange when culturally we lean towards believing and uplifting victims, and then when an opportunity arose, there were crickets, on the most part.

i'm not seeing this post as a way to talk shit about antishippers. i personally reject IDing as pro or anti; i struggle with embracing either/or because i'm not convinced that one true definition exists for either. it continues to be warped, and while it can be a good starting point for meaningful discussions about your responsibilities as a creator or as an audience member, and how you internalize messages in stories, i just... find it flawed for all the reasons i outlined above.

if you assign a label to me, or perceive this as some weird manifesto defending all evil in the world, i can only say that the spirit of this entire post went over your head, and there's nothing else i can really do about it. it's just shortsighted- even if well-intentioned.

i think there are too many things going on w/ this particular topic of discourse to untangle all at once, and that's why this post is so stupid long LMAO, and one thing i've sworn to myself is not to discourse myself to death with randos online. i'm more likely to ramble to myself to death first honestly and we’re halfway there already lol but idk! you don't need to assign a black/white rubric to everything in life. it's maddening.

I think you can still have convictions and maintain a fluid yet grounded philosophy about the way all these elements intersect and what is really worth prioritizing in terms of outrage and what really demands moral judgement. layers. 🧅

Yeah, I probably could've done that. But, well, here we are, partner! I'll go first on the introductions!

You guys can call me Juliana--or Juli, for short! I've been a student at Naranja Academy for a year and a half now--and it turns out you can do a lot in that time! I wound up accomplishing a lot! Champion, beater of Team Star, a-and other stuff... Though you'll find I'm waaay more interested in learning about history, nowadays. I think I've got all of Naranja's library read by now...alright, your turn, partner!

Really? Must I? ...I suppose I've little choice. My name is of no importance, but you may call me 'Green' if you wish to designate a name for me. As Miss Juliana has stated, I am something of a partner to her research into the legends of Paldea. It is a pleasure, I suppose.

We'll be talking a lot about our findings and hopefully posting a lot about what we can find--we're especially interested in finding out more about the Treasures of Ruin in this region, and finding out more about their history! But we're also down to battle! So feel free to talk to us!

HELLO welcome to another ~bad sable decision~, this time presenting: an AU Juliana who has been living rent free in my head for months! Time to pay-up and become an actual blog girliepop.

Anyway. As for how this Juliana is AU? It's very simple: girlie here got fused with Wo-Chien after shit went VERY decidedly awry during The Way Home. I'm going to hopefully reveal the details very slowly, but this Juliana is actually a little more villainous in nature, though in a very innocent sort of way. She's already freed Wo-Chien and I'm sure you can all figure out what's going to be the gimmick of this blog a bit. :3c

Some ground rules!

Juliana is a minor. If I see even a singular anon getting weird I will utilize the block button liberally, so don't be weird.

Juliana's circumstances are...I'll be honest, they're a fair amount darker because she did technically fail to stop the Paradise Protection Protocol herself and basically told her world's version of Nemona/Arven/Penny to run for their lives. And it haunts her. Oh does it haunt her. But while she technically lost, Wo-Chien basically won the rest of the fight and got Juliana out, though nobody is really aware of the whole. Fusion situation. As a result, some things have changed--particularly the Teal Mask, it plays out VERY differently here, and Juliana received no invitation to go to Blueberry as a result. And yes, she's basically kind of a villain now. :3c

Any description of the fusion and stuff will be kept minimal but uh. Just a general warning for body horror if you do decide to ask. Please do not fuck around and find out without proper prep. 🙏

More details of her canon circumstances will come out in time as she answers asks, and I ask simply for no godmodding! I may let some details slip OOC early but don't bring them up until I feel the time is right please!

Let me know if you're not okay with Juliana or Green interacting! Green is going to be keeping up a facade as a Totally Normal Human, but I imagine it's not going to take rocket science to figure out what Green is hiding. But I am treating canon like silly putty here, and Green will interact with people of their own accord. If you're not cool with that, let me know. Or if you want Green and not Juliana, or neither, just let me know!

Yes there are two Koraidon on the trainer card. Juliana does not fight with either of them despite Bitey basically being that one meme with the cat on the stairs going "FATHER I CRAVE VIOLENCE". And Buddy is basically still scared shitless of battle! So she basically only fights with three of her Pokemon, but she is pretty strong despite the handicap.

Juliana herself can tap into Wo-Chien's moveset. She absolutely HATES doing so, though. She pretty much only ever uses Protect in a panic, usually, but uh. I figured I'd bring that up in case anyone asked!

besides being a silly gay queer nerd artist and writer, i'm atypical, a furry, a fan-enby of a bunch of characters, an adult and a game dev. i'm an introverted, shy, and asocial person. somewhat antisocial too; sometimes i can be completely silent and spend weeks alone when too overwhelmed from socialization. (i'm INFP and pisces, but i don't take these seriously, although i can relate at times)

i'm completely atheist. i don't mind religion, even if i might take it as stories and thoughts, but i just don't mind as long as it isn't fanatic christian stuff — i was raised around these people and it got me very tired of those things.

i graduated on a game development technical course i took along with high school (public education, got in through an entrance exam, got in first place on the classification list), and i'm often studying things on my own, like languages. i draw, design, paint, conceptualize, illustrate, make pixel art, research, edit, write, and can animate and code too — sometimes i also try music, acting, photography, and cosplay. i'm still working on being an indie game dev; for now, i'm mainly an artist and writer

as for how i identify as LGBT+, i'm queer as in all pan a-spec atractions-wise. gender-wise, i identify as pangender, which in my case includes agender; i'm transneutral and non-binary (and — it's obvious but just to mention — gender non-conforming). i usually put it all in short by just saying i'm a queer enby, or a pan a-spec enby, but i don't shy away from just saying i'm gay (as in i'm definitely not straight)

as an enby, i'm also dionysian (more often known as diamoric), and any kind of relationship with me would be called this — 'cause they'd have an enby (me) in them. you could call me almost anything from the LGBTQ+ definitions and that'd still be almost fitting, but if you were to call me something accurately fitting, that's queer, pan a-spec, diamoric/dionysian and enby, heheh

i could be considered legally blind, as i can't see anything a few inches away from my face without glasses (8 degrees in each lens, but i've been needing a new prescription for some years... couldn't afford it yet). i suspect i might be neurodivergent (ADHD, ASPD and autistic, mainly), and i have lots of symptoms of depression, anxiety and C-PTSD, but also can't afford to look into those. (funny fact: i managed to get in a psychology college earlier in 2024, and for a good while was studying psychology there before even being able to go see a psychologist-) (i still do deep researches about those topics of mental health)

from the way i understand relationships and concepts related to it and to living in society — understandings that have some connections to my pan a-spec (includes asocial) pangender agender way of being —, i'm also non-monogamous in attractions and beliefs. i could be either in a monogamous or non-monogamous relationships romantically, though. i'd do fine in any, i can adapt quite well to who i love and/or like and care about! it could even be an undefined relationship — it all would be up to who i'd be with. (i'd develop an attachment, and even a hyperfixation on them, too, which would make it even easier for me to adapt,,, anyways-)

i know spanish and french, besides portuguese and english. i don't have a lot of practice with those other two languages, but i can understand them well (speaking portuguese helps, heh). i still want to learn more languages — for now, i'm also studying japanese, LIBRAS and ASL from time to time

i also like to roleplay/perform as characters at times, and used to play D&D, besides liking the RPG genre in videogames itself

as you see, i'm all over the place — i'm not completely organized, and i allow myself to let some things be messy (like tags); it's what works best for me, as far as i noticed

i like lots of things! and, though i enjoy horror, i don't make much art of this kind. plus, i create original stories, art, and characters of my own, like Safey — they're my mascot persona, and they're the fox creature on the pixel art by the start of this blog post. i have a bunch of projects i develop on my own, including ideas of comics and games! and sometimes i write poems, generally in portuguese, but i mix languages and write in english at times

i usually make cute things! whenever i happen to make something scary or with sensitive topics, i let it with the warnings i think it needs. personally, i'm positive about NSFW topics, specially sexual-related ones, in regular conditions. however, i very rarely allude to NSFW — if anything, it can be there as subtext, if i ever even include anything like that at all. to my mind, these are not NSFW, but either way: i do enjoy artistic nude art, i do like philosophically/sociologically/literarily analytical thoughts and texts that could be about/related to sexual topics, and i also do like (well, you know) horror. i take a different approach on my own art that's around these, but you can avoid it if i ever make it due to the warnings, and i hope you will use the warnings' opportunity to avoid it if you're sensitive or just don't want to see it.

overall, specially for other people like me, i want my space to be a safe space

Undertale, Dead Plate, and Married in Red are my most favorite pieces of media, so i'm drawn towards them most of the time. for the characters in those respectively, Flowey and Sans, Vincent, and Bok-su are my favorites (i know, they're the popular ones... sorry, heh, i genuinely love them)
