What do you think the dokis favorite games are.

Personally, I genuinely think yuri would be into the fear and hunger games. The horror and lore in them just seem like they'd be right up her ally.

I think it's probably easier to assign them genres? I agree that Yuri would like Fear and Hunger tho.

I don't think Monika would be big into video games, and also she sucks at them. She strikes me as a big puzzle game fan. Tetris. She's a tetris wizard. Oh, and the Sims. One day she accidentally burns someone's house down and feels incredibly guilty...but grows progressively more cavalier in her demented actions towards her Sims. The other girls like to push Monika into different games, to varying effect. She's a real sucker for games like Undertale, though.

Sayori's favorite game is Minecraft. She'd probably like games that are slower paced and easy to understand. She's the type to abandon the tutorial and say "I wanna play a game, not read a book!" then shamefully trot back to the tutorial 10 minutes later after dying 30 times in a row. She also kinda sucks at games, but can be surprisingly competitive. She'll kick your ass at Mario Kart.

Yuri is big into RPGs. Every one of those quirky Earthbound inspired RPGs, she's played, and will gush about at length if you let her. She played through a bunch of old JRPGs too, but don't let Natsuki hear that...She gets into a game for its story, typically, and she also is kinda bad at anything more gameplay oriented (Like Hades) but she will keep trying to the point of heavy frustration because she wants more of that story content (Like Hades). She probably used one of those free trial versions of RPGmaker to try and make her own RPG (or one based on a book series).

Natsuki probably has the most varied tastes. She's big into shooters, probably plays a few battle royales and is somewhat toxic (typically as a joke). She's probably the biggest gamer and the most skilled out of the lot. And, consequently, the most competitive. She probably played a bunch of fucked up flash games as a kid. And, predictably, also a bunch of visual novels & JRPGs (don't tell anyone, but I think she mightve even played a few dating sims....)

Sayori gets them all into Minecraft. Natsuki thinks the idea's kinda dumb but gets really into building a cute little house. Monika dies like 12 times on the first night and hides in a hole. Afterwards Sayori helps her learn the ropes and they build a house together. She puts her bed next to Monika's. Monika is clueless. Yuri is quietly mining the entire time and occasionally types in chat rather than using VC.

Evie x Aiden gaming headcanons

As requested by @inlocusmads, here are some of my gaming related headcanons for Evie and Aiden. Many of these are actually some of my oldest headcanons, back from when I first got into Choices. Here's what I've got as of now:

Evie:

Evie is more of a casual gamer, but she does have a lot of games she enjoys. Minecraft, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart DS, and Among Us are some of her biggest favorites. And also a couple of oddly satisfying mobile games. And whatever the Choices universe equivalent to Choices and HSS Prime is.

Evie was also a major frequenter of sites like CoolMath during 4th-6th grade and she still enjoys them. Some of her favorites includes Sushi Cat, Papa's Pizzaria/Taco Mia/Burgeria/etc., Bloons + Bloons Tower Defense, and Fireboy and Watergirl. Luckily she does get a chance to show them to Aiden before the end of Adobe Flash.

Aiden:

Aiden is utter crap at computer games. The only ones he's good at are stuff like Smule Magic Piano (which Evie would struggle with more) and Minecraft creative mode.

And 75% of Aiden's Minecraft-playing is composing or recreating songs with the note blocks.

He sometimes does Minecraft Survival mode but the only way he can really last is if Evie's in the world with him and they're working together.

He barely manages Mario Kart, but can't drift for shit.

He openly insults Fortnite.

Sometimes he'll go into a game like Mario Party thinking it'll be easy, only to be absolute dogshit at it.

Yes, Aiden is even crap at Tetris. His screen legit looked like this on his first attempt at the game.

He is not a fan of Among Us (despite that he willingly played "Mafia" on the boat in after-prom). To him, it's just people "running around and blaming each other". He especially hates being the imposter because, in his own words from the Mafia game, "I can't lie to save my life".

Actually I think Aiden would be pretty good at stuff like Interactive Story games like Evie does too.

Myra is always teasing him about how bad he is at most video games and often likes to mention his least favorites to annoy him.

Evie: "Aiden you're usually very dexterous when it comes to instruments, but you're bad at video games?" Aiden: "Playing the piano and playing on a gaming console are two completely different things."

Both of them:

Evie and Aiden regularly have double dates with Nishan and Sakura where they play 2-on-2 video games, usually battlegrounds-style games. Their rounds are of course very short-lived because Aiden is crap at the games, but they're still fun nonetheless.

I haven't played it myself yet but I can totally see the two of them getting into Fall Guys. Evie likes the cute fall guy avatars.

Evie would try to teach Aiden a lot of the video games she's good at. He'd slowly improve at most of them.

The two of them totally obsess over video games with awesome soundtracks, even if they haven't played the games themselves. But it sometimes may lead them to getting into the games. Eg. Evie loves the soundtracks for the Super Mario Galaxy games, she'd show it to Aiden and they'd obsess over them, and at one point or another, they'd feel compelled to buy the games.

I think a habit both of them would also have in certain video games is: they start a game, but if the soundtrack is really good, they'll just make their character do nothing or run around aimlessly in it so that they can keep the music + sound effects going on because they don't want it to stop. They do this a LOT with Mecha Bowser battle in Super Mario Galaxy 1.

I think they'd sometimes use app versions of classic board games (chess, checkers, etc).

They'd definitely enjoy puzzle games like minesweeper. They're each pretty good at the puzzle games on their own, but it's extra fun to work on them together. Also Aiden sitting in Evie's lap while they play the games.

the cluck shot from Gears of War - a gun that LOOKS somewhat normal. however, instead of shooting bullets, it shoots explosive chickens.

Pretty much instantly. I was like 11 years old when I first played a Souls game (number 3) and up until then my gaming experience had basically been minecraft on an iPad. So this being the only game I’d consciously asked to play led to just trying to beat it through pure furious will. I remember taking 4 hours to beat Iudex Gundyr (I had an Easter egg and only allowed myself pieces when I made progress) and only finding out how to lock on at Yhorm because my feeble 11 year old mind couldn’t even grasp the concept of L3 or R3.

I literally completely missed the whole Fortnite craze even though I was in the right age range and demographic. I only played Dark Souls. Literally all I could think about. It has almost definitely had a knock on effect to my education. The only games I can really play much of without getting bored are other high skill cap games like Vermintide 2 and Tetris (both of which I’d strongly recommend to anyone with this FromSoftware Curse). And now I’ve infected several close friends with the “FromSoftware curse”.

Apart from PvP builds, I’ve been using the same character since then and have around 550 hours on that character alone which is almost a third of my whole play time on DS3.

I’d like to finish this by advocating for any poor soul reading this to join the wonderful Rosaria’s Fingers. Apparently my 699 pale tongues are not enough for her. The more the merrier or something.

Did the ‘Fromsoftware curse’ happen to you, and if so, when did it set in?

The Fromsoftware curse being the term for after you click with a Fromsoft game, every other game you play that isn’t Fromsoft will now feel like it has something missing and will never be as satisfying. I’ve seen people use this term mostly on the subreddits.

For me, it was Artorias in DS1. After that it was over for me, no other game could make me feel that way besides another Fromsoft title.

headcanon that nendo acts absolutely unhinged when ill. I'll elaborate.

-he gets a horrendous cold every winter without fail. he just goes about his daily life as normal with a nose like a running tap and the thickest voice imaginable. he sneezes on average 7 times a minute and his sinuses are under incredible pressure. he asks saiki to observe every single sneeze and this is the only outward indication that he's aware that he is ill

-when he gets the flu he projectile vomits like it's a casual thing to do. he'll invite his friends over to watch a 2 hour youtube essay about the deadliest rollercoaster crashes and in the middle of infodumping just reach for a bucket and throw up in the most VIOLENT fashion before finishing his sentence like nothing happened. the sick bucket just disappears somehow and everyone is just running for the hills and screaming. the following day everyone else has the flu and nendo is fully recovered. 7 wounded 2 deceased

-he lost his voice once and just didn't notice. making these awful scratchy high pitch noises as he tried to speak. didn't shut up for a second, broke akechi's world record in words said per minute. topic of conversation still undetermined.

-he actually LIKES that weird achey shivery flu feeling. he says it's like sweet and sour sauce for his bones. no one's brave enough to ask wtf he means by that.

-he once chugged a bottle of cough syrup and it had no noticeable effect.

-he DOES mask when sick but he has to be told verbally by his mother that he is sick to believe it. he will then fully believe that he is sick until his mother informs him that he has recovered. once she forgot to tell him his cold went away and he double masked for a month straight. no one else said anything bc seeing nendo's chin stick out the bottom of a face mask is actually really funny

-he got chicken pox and thought he was going to turn into a chicken like he thought the spots were the feathers trying to poke through his skin. I have no possible defense for this man at this point.

-he works out when deathly ill bc he thinks if he's going to be sweating anyway he might as well. god he's so dumb. he's going to die. someone help him please.

-he can't swallow pills. he just can't. it is funny to watch him try tho

-he coughs like that one meme about how toddlers cough. hang on let me boogle it

Is there any way for you to tell that a game is going to be actually good and/or fun during production? Or a point in development where it becomes clear that it will, or won't, be a good product?

I wouldn’t say there is a single method for determining this, but rather a point during the development cycle where we get a better feeling of the potential of the finished game. Obviously that evaluation gets adjusted as production continues, decisions are finalized, and things come together, but there’s often a real question mark on things until development reaches certain milestones. Those milestones greatly depend on the kind of game we’re building.

With some games it can be quite early. These games have a core gameplay loop that is really compelling even from early prototyping and we can already tell the game will be fun to play in a larger setting. Games like Tetris, Katamari Damacy, Portal, Minecraft, Breath of the Wild, Dance Dance Revolution, etc. fall into this category. Nintendo’s first-party titles especially adhere to this principle of a fun core gameplay loop right out of the box. These are often “concept” games, where you just engage with a single gameplay concept (or a limited set of concepts) repeatedly in different ways.

With most games, we really depend on all of the disparate elements and systems to come together into a cohesive experience before we can make that call. That usually won’t happen at earliest until we finish building the [vertical slice] when we have playable elements from all of the systems within the same gameplay session. Many games fall into this category - Street Fighter, Grand Theft Auto, Hitman, PUBG, League, FIFA, and so on. There’s more to these games than just the core gameplay loop, there’s resources and secondary gameplay systems interacting with each other to form a complete and engaging experience. The vertical slice experience here is representative of all other gameplay experiences in the finished game.

The hardest games to gauge tend to be the heavily narrative-driven games because we can’t take a “representative chunk” of narrative from anywhere. These tend to be the longer RPGs, where the regular gameplay of battles and stats and inventory management take a back seat to the overall ongoing narrative that’s going on. In this situation, lackluster character development or a disappointing overarching storyline can sink the overall game even if the individual gameplay systems are pretty fantastic on their own. Mass Effect 3 is the probably the prime example here since it had so much riding on its narrative. The moment-to-moment gameplay experience in ME3 was pretty fantastic, but the story (especially the ending) was what hurt its reception and overall experience. That’s not something we can prototype or get done in the vertical slice, it is only something that we can evaluate once the entire game comes together.

- I’ve already said that i don’t think they’re evil, and I’ll stand by that opinion until the day of my death

-that said, their plan was flawed. I mean, obvi. the things they did, such as attempt suicide on 2 occasions,  and succeed on one with the help of Asriel (as well as taking him down with them !) were wrong for quite a few reasons. I think ultimately they were blinded by the pressure placed on them, whether it was intentional or not, and not having a place to diffuse that anxiety, they sort of absorbed it and honed it into a plan to save everyone important (monsters, who showed some bare minimum decency and kindness) and kill everyone who wasn’t (that being themself.) And, once the first part of that plan succeeded, they sort of exploded; being on the surface, with humans, the people who hurt them, the people they hated, was a good enough motive to release all that built up tension .

-also, i might as well go into no mercy- I think Chara winds up with a lot of power, a lot of anxiety, and anger built up, so when every monster in the underground is killed theyre sort of gaining power bit by bit- until the end, after you kill flowey, and we get to meet them for real . I think they’re pissed off, and they try to convince you that you’re in the right, they thank you, etc; they try to appeal to the player, who throughout the run weve only seen as a mindless killing machine, in an attempt to get you to erase the world and go back on your decisions . When you don’t, they get frustrated, explode, using all the power they’ve gained through the run to erase the file themself.
