*Kit and Lienna trying to get an ambulance out to a supernatural crime scene* Kit, talking into a radio: Hello, how's it going out there? This is, uh, we need help. We are at West End and there's been a horrible accident- attack. Some stuff's bad here. We need your help. Uh, there is a swarm of bears and they are everywhere! And there's these hunters too and they seem to be shooting at the bears, but also at us. Um, which is not good, and a few of our friends are hurt, and uh, we are in desperate need of help. So, please, there's vicious bears, and uh, we don't know what to do. So, please, uh, come help us. S.O.S. This is an emergency. S-Save our ship. Come on down, please help us. *Puts down radio* Lienna, staring at him: Swarm of bears? Kit: . . . Yeah. Lienna: Herd of bears. Kit: Yes, I've heard of bears. Lienna: Oh, my God.

Penelope's weaving
aka I, an archeologist, am here to review the accuracy Penelope's loom in the 2024 movie 'The Return' because I want to avoid thinking about all my papers due next week. For context, I am currently writing my bachelor paper on Minoan textiles, and while I am definitely not an expert, I do know a thing or two about bronze age textile technology
So first point of pedantry: that is not at all a bronze ago loom.
Tumblr media
I can't say exactly say what kind of loom this is, as I've only studied bronze ago looms. Whatever kind of horizontal/draw/treadle loom this is, I can confidently state that this would not have been used in Mycenaean times. I'd say that we only see these kinds of looms in Europe from the medieval period, somewhere around the 11th century.
In the bronze age, there are three types of looms in use (as far as we know). The horizontal ground loom, the two beam loom, and the warp-weighted loom. Most traditionally, we see iconography depict Penelope weaving on a warp-weighted loom, like this beautiful vase does.
Tumblr media
We can clearly recognize this as a warp weighted loom, because we can see the weights: they're the little triangles at the ends of the vertical threads (the warp). The warp-weighted loom is also the only loom we can find archeological remains of, as the loom weights were often made of clay (sometimes pebbles), while the other types of looms were purely wooden.
Furthermore, I have genuinely no clue what she is supposed to be doing with her weaving in this short clip. There is no visible shed, which is the separation between the warp yarns, through which you pull the weft, so that you can actually weave something.
Tumblr media
Here's a picture of the shed, as you can see, every other thread is pulled up, and the shed can then be switched around to create a woven pattern.
In the short clip we see, she seems to just be drawing some threads through the warp, which is more than a little nonsensical. If one was weaving a smaller fabric or a tapestry, one could perhaps use a pin or sword beater to pick up individual threads of the warp to pass your horizontal thread (the weft) under, and create patterns that way. That is still not what she is doing here. Additionally, she is weaving a solid red fabric, which would not make it a very interesting tapestry.
Perhaps she's undoing her weaving in this scene? It would make a little more sense if that was what she was doing, as no one would ever be actively weaving at night! It required a lot of light to be able to see what you were doing. Candle light just did not suffice. It still looks a little strange to me, as I don't actually see any woven fabric on the loom that she could be undoing. It's all just loose warp threads.
Honestly, it kind of looks like they picked up a loom from the nearest interactive history museum and plunked it into their movie without doing any research. I think it's a little sad that when adapting a work that centers weaving as much as the Odyssey does, the filmmakers did not do any research into bronze age weaving. You really don't need to be writing a paper on this stuff to find sources for this!
Tumblr media
I'll just leave you all with this: a beautiful reconstruction of a warp-weighted loom, with the beginnings of a tapestry as Penelope would have woven it. You can see the loom weights at the bottom, and the sticks in the middle called the heddles, which were used to create the shed I discussed earlier. This is part of the Penelope project.

really an inexplicable train of thought but i feel like taako is the kind of person who in a modren era au would just decide to go to a shooting range and learn how to shoot a pistol for funsies, but would consider learning to spin the pistol all cool like they do in cowboy movies to be his first and foremost priority. like hes already bought a holster and the moment he is given a gun he immediately starts trying to twirl it. the instructor has to tell him to stop or theyll take the gun away from him. he keeps trying to lead the conversation back to it anyway because he really feels like theyre putting the cart before the horse here if hes learning how to shoot the gun before even knowing how to dramatically reholster it if he were to get in some sort of cowboy duel. hes actually really good at the shooting part but he gets kicked out of the class after his eighth guntwirling attempt in which he accidentally flicks the safety off mid twirl and shoots one of their light fixtures

I don't understand why everyone was so surprised Brennan and Katie studied without knowing they'd be doing it all again. If you just badly failed naming a basic thing on a competitive TV show, of course you'd go home and look up all the fucking pasta shapes you completely blanked on

idk at some point I think we need to stop lying to city people about what a no light pollution night sky looks like bc some of the saturation boosted long exposures folk are using as proof of what the nebulous they have taken from you are getting silly.
like this is a photo from the McDonald observatory obviously, but this is like. almost what you would actually be seeing under decent but not exceptional circumstances (ie sea level with low moisture/dust in the air, and no time spent intentionally avoiding light before hand)

long question ahead for a fic i want to work on soon!! but if you don't want to read all that (fair enough) then the tldr is basically that I want some ideas on where Tashi's first childhood home might've been :) bc I don't have the best grasp on American geography so I don't know the vibes of different areas and what would fit best <3
for the conceptually complex tashi lily fic I've been writing in my head for a while I'm having a hard time settling on a location bc I don't know enough about American geography </3 I would like some thoughts on where you guys could picture Tashi growing up (specifically her childhood home up until the age of about ten ish so before any tennis money etc)
the concept is based on a film that i love (and i might combine it with a book i read as a child too) but the film is french (and the book is British) so as far as translating that to an American setting I'm not sure what state (or city, town, etc) would work best
for my idea I would need a setting where it would be plausible to have a forest/woodland area surrounding the house or basically just an area with lots of trees that a child would be allowed to play in alone because it is so near to home (but is hidden enough that they aren't being watched by parents the whole time)
my problem is that when I think of forests in America I'm thinking either really rural like a cabin in the woods or if it's suburban it's more east coast which I don't know if that fits Tashi (I am probably very wrong about this which is why I'm asking bc I don't have a grasp on the vibes of American states and general geography)
So if there is no way the type of setting I want can work then I can rework my idea and instead set it in an apartment building in which case also let me know where the best setting for that would be 😁
sorry this became a really complex question it's just I need to get over this hurdle before I can begin writing 💔
also the more specific the better for settings so that I can look it up and get an idea of the visuals

Okay, so, I didn't read a whole lot this month. Hear me out. I'm not mad about it. I got SO much crafting done across different mediums. Nothing to show for it, really, but I'm having so much fun being creative in a way I haven't felt in a very long time. I think I might actually be able to set up some type of tiny shop about it, too. Got my embroidery machine up and running in a way that allows me to create my own designs, and when I tell you the creative juices are flowing, boy howdy it's like a dam has broken. I also started pokemon Violet, and while that's slow going, I'm having a lot of fun with it. So, no I'm not mad at my reading habits this month.
Tumblr media
In the Ravenous Dark by AM Strickland ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Phew. Okay. This was. A very bumpy ride. The first half was a slog, honestly, and the writing and pacing is not great, but the last third or so reminded me a lot of Beyond the Ruby Veil which was also not outstanding, but it was fun. Fucked up, feral lesbians. Poly family friendship going on. The plot is so basic, the magic neat, the worldbuilding lacking. I would not read it again, but at the end I'm not entirely mad I did.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch ⭐️ - I don't even know what to say. I didn't expect to be wowed, I went in expecting no more than a mediocre thriller. What I got was A Book Written By A Man™️. How many times can a guy fridge one wife? Infinitely, apparently! I was semi on board until he started fighting his other selves. That was dumb as shit.
The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - *Gordon Ramsay voice* Finally, a good fucking book. This took me most of the month to read, but I'm not mad about it. It was nice to sit quietly with this book, and while it took it's time, I never felt bored with it. I can't really pinpoint what keeps it from five stars, and maybe my rating will change in the future, but I did really enjoy this. It has a wonderful cast, everyone felt very real and well rounded, it was bloody, but never felt gratuitously so. It was a good book and I very much want to continue the series.
Favorite of the month was most definitely Art of the Prophecy. Kind of unfair because Dark Matter was such a disaster, but Ravenous Dark had it's perks. Mainly being batshit crazy and ending in polyamory.
My friends, as always, have been incredibly kind to me. I could not have gotten through the last couple months without them. Would like to do a couple of buddy reads in the coming months. I really did like taking my time with a longer book, and I think I'm ready to tackle the final book in the Rook and Rose trilogy. My library also finally got a copy of The Bone Maker on audio and while I haven't listened to an audiobook since December, I'm excited to give that a listen. As always, be kind whenever possible.

man like... i really love my life. yesterday a friend and I helped another friend move, and I got to spend the whole day Doing Stuff (mostly while listening to Chapelle Roan's The Giver, because, yk, we get the job done!!) and also got to show them some clipping. songs. Today I woke up, cleaned my room, took a shower, had a nice chill breakfast and now I'm relaxing and later one of my girlfriends will come over and we're probably going to cook together. And tomorrow I get to go to work and pipette and centrifuge blood samples and enter data into the database and leave at four. And maybe next week I can go to a fun dance workshop thing and maybe next weekend I can go bouldering with friends.

#rambly little life updates in the tags. just chatting!#anyways this last little bit of Method Acting isn't going to be much over ~2k and I actually mean it this time.#I know I go over projected word counts constantly but I really think I know what I need to do with this and it shouldn't take long#and yet I can't get it down. I've got some parts of it in another doc but it's not cohering yet.#Why do I have to have an actual life that I need to do things in? why can't I just stare at google docs 24/7???#worrying about life stuff is my number one writing block inducer and unfortunately it's a busy time of year.#I'm finishing my degree in the next month which is great but the job market is... not the best right now ❤️ which is stressful.#so I guess I'll have a lot more time on my hands soon but I'm not really happy about it lol. I'd rather be employed but alas.#I live in a federal worker heavy area so you can imagine that the local job market is a little chaotic and crowded at the moment.#lots of very experienced people are back to job searching right now.#I think I'll do some volunteering with either the library or some clerical work with the local fire/rescue squad and see how that goes.#I need to pad my resume. I HAD a good one to go into the veterinary field but that derailed circa 2020#and unfortunately I don't know how far I'll get in non-medical non-animal fields with a skillset like 'reading dog radiographs'#or 'proficient in catching and handling reptiles'. they don't really need that in a hotel receptionist.#well. nobody THINKS they need that until there's a rat snake where it doesn't belong (which is their favorite place to be) but I digress.#so anyways now I'm kind of aimlessly wielding a gen studies degree amidst a collapsing... well. everything. a collapsing everything.#but hey. I've got The Characters to get me through it.#if nothing else then I have some yeehaw escapism and other wips/some oneshot ideas to start messing around with.#this got very off topic but oversharing online is ALSO something I've got to get me through it 😅#we do what we can these days.
