c.ooper h.oward was never a violent person. he was not aggressive. he did not use force against people unless as an absolute last resort. he did not grow up being hit as punishment. he grew up in a household where it was known and taught that there cannot be love in a relationship that also contains abuse. the abuse inherently strips away any true 'love' that is/was perceived. both things cannot exist at once. that's how he was raised.

the ghoul is a very violent person. he was shoved violently and painfully into his new existence in a new world and that's what he became. he is violent, he is aggressive, he uses force at every available opportunity. he hits, grabs, pushes, pulls, whatever just about everyone save for people he truly respects, and there aren't many people that fit that.

now, he was c.ooper h.oward for roughly 50 years. he's been the ghoul for much, much longer. this violence and aggression is so deeply ingrained in him now.

when he starts to develop feelings for lucy, he has a very hard time reconciling w/in himself how he treated her and the things he did to her. and not only that but he has a hard time making sense of the fact that his violent tendencies and aggression when directed at others on her behalf could be found in any way attractive to her.

Does it stop him from indulging? no lmao. He’s not an idiot. it just takes him a very long time to believe that she could/does forgive him for what he did to her bc he does not forgive as easily. and he hasn’t forgiven himself for what he did by the time they start sleeping together.
