My Favorite Cards from 2024: Foundations
The year is pretty close to over, so let’s go back over the sets released this year (with new cards at least), and go through a few of my favorite cards from that release. I’ll group together stuff released together, in this case it’ll be the main Foundations set and the Foundations Jumpstart cards. Particularly welcome reprints might also get a mention.
I've been having a lot of fun with Raise the Past, and it's an excellent example of what new Foundations cards should be: a card that's simple, yet still powerful and at a rate we haven't really seen before. In the wake of Rally the Ancestors and Return to the Ranks. A mass of small creatures is a very white way to use the graveyard, and very fun.
A very splashy 3-drop, if you'll pardon the pun, Kiora has made an impact in quite a few decks. The base rate of a 3/2 that loots twice on etb isn't bad, but then the opponent has to deal with it anyway even if you've already gotten your value, because they can't just let you have a free 8/8 from your three drop. The looting helps to get to Threshold, wrapping the entire card into a nice package.
Doubling minor graveyard hate with fun copying and stealing effects is a good way to my heart. Abyssal Harvester does that, sadly it's held back by its fragile body on a creature that doesn't do anything until you untap with it. Still, I like the design!
Look at the kitty! It's like the cute dog but not an enchantment! I also love the cute dog, and I love cantripping bodies in the color that can best use them! A cat that'll make its way into plenty of my decks.
A lot of graveyard stuff in this list, but we don't see those kinds of rewards too often in blue, and a card every time is really good. Neerdiv does her best River Kelpie impression for half the cost and available in the command zone, and then she even enables herself!
I do not know why green got this card, but Spinner of Souls sure exists and is good! Not every green creature deck will reliably have creatures dying enough to make it worth the inclusion, but considering that Fecundity sees a decent amount of commander play, and Foster should see a bit more, there are definitely homes there. I do love an Evolutionary Leap. All of that on a body big enough it gets a chance in competitive formats? I'll take it!
Efficient engines that can both attack and draw cards at 2 mana are a really nice place to be in mono-white. Brigone is niche enough to get the counters with her own effect that she's not oppressive, and adds a nice tension between keeping her able to smack people with a lot of counters and getting cards to trigger her. Using her in other counter decks that don't rely on her Heroic effect is also possible, and makes her not just confined to those very few decks.
Twinflame Tyrant is the big mythic dragon for Foundations, and it passes the muster! Not oppressive without haste by itself, it pushes up an effect two mana from when we last saw it this widely on a body with Angrath's Marauders. It's simple, which is a plus, and impressive and gets people excited! Also an art that looks great in foil.
Sadly, I'm not the only one that likes Rev's design, and as a result she's currently at an unreasonable price. Moving past that, getting mana and cards out of every attack is very much something that's worth the four mana, and I do love stealing other people's cards. Being able to get up to three cards and treasures per turn in commander by attacking multiple opponents seals the deal on the design for me... If I can ever get some copies for a price I'd pay for a card in a commander deck.
I like Celestial Armor more than Maul of the Skyclaves, which it compares to. Targeted protection spells are generally too situational to warrant a slot in decks, so one that pulls its own weight by also being a decently threatening equipment in decks that would want that allow this one to be played. This in turn makes the game more interactive, because now players have to play around the possibility of the opponent running some protection spell. Everybody wins! Except the player who's removal spell just got fizzled.
Again, Archmage of Runes is simple, clean and effective. Combining two popular effects into one, not prohibitively expensive card, repaying the one mana more you spend on this compared to an Archmage Emeritus by the time you cast your first discounted spell.
A new Alesha! Who wouldn't love old lady Alesha, still turning sideways and still bringing back creatures to fight. Getting some potential immediate value compensates well the loss of some of the tricks of the original Alesha, but it's still a card I love being in the foundational set of magic.
Reprints:
Seeing this angel package return in Foundations is a welcome sight. Plenty of players love angels and that's a great entry point. Plus Youthful Valkyrie gets an ACTUAL printing this time which should help greatly with supply.
The vegetables package! Duress and Negate kinda HAD to be in the set, it avoids them having to reprint it in a standard set every couple years. Burst Lightning is a welcome surprise in this package of efficient base spells for standard.
In blue, we got the return of Witness Protection, which still holds some of the best trinket text in the game, beautifully tying together the design. Just for the sake of that, it deserves a place here. Brineborn Cutthroat is just a solid way for a flash deck to actually finish the game, and plays into the aspects of blue that appeals to many players (and gets it hated by many other players.)
Vampire Nighthawk more than any other card in Foundations sent a pang of nostalgia through me, and I wasn't even actively playing last time around!
Liliana, Dreadhorde General is a great card that sees play in plenty of commander decks and has seen play in standard, and seeing another reprint to keep the price low is very encouraging!
Scooze is back! I love Scooze! As long as it's not exiling my perfectly fair graveyard strategy, of course. Anyway, it's very funny that Scavenging Ooze started as a card from a commander precon and went on to become a "Foundational part" of Standard.

Honestly, I like it from both a lore and a design perspective. Long post incoming, more under the cut
Lore - I’m a vorthos first and foremost and while I didn’t super like the choice at first, it has really grown on me, especially in Duskmourn and through the storytelling of Mira Grant. After WAR, many people were saying that there had been no consequences because no one had died. There’s plenty of juicy storytelling consequences in the aftermath (pun not intended) of MOM. First off, in the reactions of planeswalkers, both former and current. Tyvar is perfectly fine with losing his spark bc he’s no longer “on easy mode”. Niko is upset about losing their spark bc to them, it was a literal representation of them choosing to defy destiny, and now, they are questioning what that means for them. Characters like Ajani are trying to atone, Nahiri is trying to keep Zendikar free from planeswalkers, Kaya and others, especially from the strike team are super traumatized, Will and Rowan are at odds with one another and Jace and Vraska are plotting to restart the multiverse or something. For many characters, the desparking has made them more dynamic and interesting characters. And that’s just the planeswalkers and former planeswalkers.
The nonplaneswalkers can now go anywhere, for better or worse (Kellan found his dad and also himself, there’s a colonialism of Thunder Junction and Valgavoth can now open doors anywhere, practically at will) This opens up our cast of characters more and gives us more opportunities for interesting stories.
Speaking of which, there’s so many new stories to tell: from how people from vastly different planes interact and how that cross-cultural interaction affects the planes, to the return of fan-favorite characters without having to return to the same plane over and over again. (Case in point: Gisa and Geralf Cecani, who have proved again and again that their dynamic is one of the funniest in magic fiction, again primarily due to Seanan McGuire, whose side stories featuring them, “The Dance of Undeath”, “Family Game Night” and “A Pleasant Family Outing” [MID, MOM, and OTJ, respectively] are must reads). Even in a story more focused on the plane and its inhabitants, rather than visitors, the aftereffects of the invasion have left their mark on the world and its population. A story like MKM, which was amazing and imo super in flavor for Ravnica, even if the card set didn’t leave everyone with that same taste, is an example of this. The whole story takes place due to wrongs, both real and imagined, done during the Invasion (Krenko war profiteering vs Teysa spying on Phyrexia and Zegana/Vannifar experimenting with the oil in secret to find a cure). That story (and this three year arc in general)was about trauma and its lasting effects and wounds, to Kaya, to Trostani, to the plane of Ravnica as a whole. This form of storytelling that builds off of previous stories to tell something larger, is reminiscent of the Ixalan era story, which is widely considered to be some of the greatest magic storytelling.
There’s a lot of storytelling opportunities here that couldn’t be done before the Desparkening.
Card Design - I have a lot less to say about this because I know less about it. I think the thing I like most about the effects of the Desparking on card design is that we get to see creature types of former planeswalkers, many of whom had never really planeswalked all that much or who hadn’t been a part of the story for years (case in point Kiora). Also, I feel that there’s relatively not a lot of design space for planeswalkers. Now that there isn’t 3+ a set every set, planeswalker designs can be more out there and dynamic (case in point Kaito, Bane of Nightmares).
I also recall seeing that planeswalkers were fairly unpopular and in many cases unfun to play with, so I would have thought that people would have been happy to see less of them?
These are just my opinions but I really do think that the Desparking has been a net positive for magic.
So seeing the Wander just be another legendary creature in Duskmourne really hit home to me how much the desparking story line was not a good choice. So I do like how non planeswalker characters can move between planes, that is a huge plus plus, but you didn't have to despark any planes walkers to do it. Now the 100 pound gorilla in the room is commander, and having your story focused characters not be allowed to be commanders is a massive problem. But the solution of just making the planeswalkers unspecial to fix this commander issue was just not a smart solution. I think from conception most walkers weren't going to stay desparked and I hope the feed back from the player base excels that story point to happen faster than planned. I also have to say that having 1 Walker per set, pretty much means you never see them in ladder on MTGA. There are some lists running one or two total in the more control lists, but you don't see control every game and they are one or two ofs, so there representation in actual games are far less than you think. Functionally its kinda like Planeswalkers got deleted from the games I see on MTGA.
One final note, I can't stress enough how much I love that other characters can now move between the planes and the many doors this opens up for card designs and stories, I am totally fine with that being the new norm going forward, but making planes walkers just another legendary creature was a total fail IMO.
How do others feel about us despairing the majority of the planeswalkers?

rubiesintherough asked: ∗ 22﹕ sender finds receiver [ injured / bloodied ] . ( kiora )
IT WAS A TRETCHEROUS TASK, BEING CONNECTED TO YOUR TWIN BY SOME divine bullshit, and yet, there she was. Laid upon the ground, the firebird was choking on her own blood despite there being no one there or any sign of physical injury. To hurt her or her brother, was to hurt the other too. Both a blessing and a curse at times, today it was definitely the latter. She could feel the excruciating pain; the blood as it filled her lungs, caused her to couch and heave every breath that she could whilst extended talons clawed frantically upon the hard floor beneath her.
The figure that came towards her was blurred ~ her vision was fast failing her as she felt her brother weaken and subsequentially, her too. She believed it to be her older sister at first with how their outline came across to her. “ S --- S --- Si...m... ” She hadn’t the strength to talk or question who’d come to her aid. All that she knew, was that she was growing colder and colder by the moment and all that she could manage, was the faint hints of desperate whimpers. She did not want to die, not like this.

love how a good portion of these placements are basically just based on fully canon interactions, like how Kiora fought one of her plane’s god-figures and got her ass handed to her (though she did best Thassa, so maybe she should be a bit higher)

Intro-Worldly

Some worlds we’ve been to, some worlds we’ve never seen. Here’s the difference between how we as players planeswalk to worlds and how planeswalkers interact with this stuff: We have tropes. We have points of observation. Kaldheim has a mix of Scandanavian lore and Viking tropes, which is something we can see in bits of pop culture. However, when Kaya went there, she had no idea that this was anything other than a way of life, that this was a world that could exist anywhere else. The anchoring is always different.
Cultural tropes and story observations go hand-in-hand as well! The culture of Ravnica is filled with oddities, and the ten guilds all have their own quirks, but it’s up to visitors from other worlds to come in and look at, say, the Simic and think that it’s weird to grow ferret-cuttlefish hybrids in test tubes. And on Zendikar, any planeswalker from a world with solid ground would marvel at the Roil, and through their eyes we get that sense of perspective. What is this world? We see all angles from behind the card, but they see all lives from inside it.
And what better way to introduce cool parts of a world than through the eyes of a multi-dimensional observer?
This week’s contest: Design a common card, set on a plane of your choice, with flavor text quoting a planeswalker not from that plane.
The Goals (M.E.O.W.):
>> Mandatory: Your card must be a common card and be appropriate in terms of power level and complexity. Your card must be set on a specific plane, but how you show that is up to you. Your card must quote a planeswalker in its flavor text, and therefore must have flavor text. The planeswalker being quoted must be a visitor to the plane on which your card is set, although it doesn’t necessarily have to be their first time there.
>> Encouraged: I think you can be a little quippy here. Imagine that you’re setting up something new for players, getting them excited about this world with characters we already know. You don’t have to tell a story necessarily or interact with the characters on the card, but what changes when you do? Think about the card types. Think about whether or not your planeswalker is an active participant or an observer. What are their goals on this plane? A winning card will show something about that planeswalker that makes me excited to see them on this world, for whatever reason that may be.
>> Optional: The plane doesn’t have to be one we’ve seen before* and it doesn’t have to call back to a previous story, although these might be helpful anchor points. Maybe it’s just a planeswalker going somewhere and saying “this is cool!” or “well this is messed up.” The level of involvement is up to you. And you don’t have to make it some grand observation! Look at some printed examples for cards that aren’t directly story/planeswalking related.
>> Warning: Make sure you read up on where planeswalkers are originally from and where they’re going. Make sure that your FT is an actual quote and not a expository snippet merely featuring your planeswalker. You can use any character that is established to be a planeswalker, but the most resonant planeswalkers will be ones with which we are familiar in some way. Keep tabs on their characterization. And again: COMMONS.
*Clarification: By this, I mean a plane we’ve seen in terms of canon but maybe we haven’t been there in a set. Azgol, Vryn, and Muraganda are examples of this.
Some good printed examples include, but are not limited to:
Soul Parry
Inspiring Roar
Negate (AER)
Kiora’s Dambreaker
Spined Thopter
Demonic Appetite
Rottenheart Ghoul
Unexpected Fangs
Bloodbriar
Seismic Shudder
Colossal Might
Soul Manipulation
Ondu Champion
NB: Not all the above cards necessarily tell the story of their plane, but are good for examples of personable quotes. If you have a very plane-specific card, you can make the quote more vague if it carries. If you have a vaguer card, you can make the quote more story/walker specific to explain it.
The goal of this contest is twofold. Firstly, I feel we could all use a little bit of a nice planeswalker story in which the planeswalking matters. Secondly, common design is actually pretty difficult to do in an exciting way, so I’m giving some flavor constraints to give a new edge to that excitement. This contest is half design and half creative writing exercise. Have fun!

The Celtic Princess Chapter 1
A/N: Totally thought this was posted? Apparently not? XD Anyway, hope you guys like it.
Warnings: None
Words: 2,708

Moodboard made by me, none of the pictures are mine
~
Ivar remembered seeing Kiora when he was a child. Her father brought her along with her older brother, Tadgh, when they visited Kattegat, shortly before Ragnar sailed for Paris. Her father, King Esca, was a Celtic king that wanted the raiding to end in his land and proposed a treaty. Before an alliance could be formed, Ragnar disappeared after Paris, the last they heard about him was his death at the hands of King Aelle. Esca passed soon after Ragnar, leaving Tadhg as king and Kiora in his care.
While Ivar and Kiora were mere children and their interactions brief, as Ivar remembered it, he always found himself thinking about her from time to time, even once he became king himself and married Freydis. But with Fredyis’ future as queen and Ivar’s wife hung in the balance, his eye wandered. He didn't stop himself from looking at the other slaves and women that passed through the hall, even in her presence. The fights between husband and wife were routine at night, often ending with Ivar storming out, or crawling if he was so angry he didn't care about his braces, and the slaves picking up the shards of broken bowls and things that Freydis had thrown at him.
In the weeks that followed, King Tadhg sent a messenger to try to broker another alliance between the two young kings. 10 years since their first meeting, Ivar would once again come face to face with the Celtic princess.
~
As Kiora’s boat came to dock alongside her brother’s she looked over Kattegat and gave a small smirk. It looked bigger than it did when she was a child. There were more houses that lined the forest and the market seemed to have grown as well. Tadhg appeared at her side, holding out a hand to her. She turned to her brother and gave him a sweet smile, taking his hand and stepping off the boat. While Tadhg was married, his wife, Davan, fell into step behind the siblings as she was not yet crowned as queen. As such, Kiora held a higher position over her and walked beside Tadhg as they were escorted through the market and the town until they came to the hall, where they waited to be escorted inside.
Once the doors opened, Ivar couldn’t help the smile that jumped across his face when he saw Kiora. She was a rather gangly child, but he always loved her eyes; The way the green emeralds glittered and shined. Freydis glanced at her husband before giving the princess a brief glower as Tadhg bowed his head to Ivar and Freydis with respect. Kiora did the same if only to hide the smirk from seeing Ivar so happy to see her. She knew his eyes were on her the entire time because she couldn’t seem to look away from him either. Ivar had grown into quite a handsome man. She had heard that the crippled son of Ragnar Lothbrok now walked and from the braces on his legs and the crutch in his hand as he stood made that rumor quite clear.
“King Ivar,” Tadhg said, rather graciously. Ivar chuckled and made his way down from his throne, waving for the blonde woman next to him to remain seated. This woman glared at Kiora so fierce, she wondered if she had done something wrong simply by walking in. She’d never seen this woman before, not even a recollection from when she was last here. The hatred this woman seemed to have for her didn't stop her from accepting Ivar’s embrace and kiss as his lips brushed across her cheek.
“Tadhg. Kiora. It has been too long.” Ivar said. “I am glad to see you both are well. And I am sorry for the loss of your father, King Esca.”
Kiora bowed her head and said, “Thank you, my King.” She looked him over and couldn’t help but skew her lips in a smirk as she said, “Glad to see you’ve outgrown your little cart.”
Tadhg gave his sister a warning look, but Ivar simply chuckled and took her hand, bending to kiss it. “And you’ve not changed at all, Kiora.” He said. He looked down at her as he stood straight and said, “And now I’m the taller of us.”
Kiora chuckled as Ivar went back to his throne, casting a glance at Freydis. Kiora noticed the subtle change in his face, more so his eyes. They held the same distaste that Freydis held for Kiora. Motioning to her, Ivar said, rather unenthusiastically, “My wife. Freydis.”
Tadhg bowed his head to her, stepping up with his hand outstretched and said, “My Queen.”
Freydis gave him a small smile and allowed him to take her hand to kiss it before he stepped back beside Kiora. Ivar held out his hands, and in a booming voice, he said, “King Tadhg, Princess Kiora and their kin are welcome here! If any man holds resentment for these Celts, it shall be handled between myself and King Tadhg! There is to be no bloodshed while they are here!”
The hall roared to life, Tadhg and Kiora glancing around at the men and women that had gathered in the hall with them. Both Tadhg and Ivar knew there were at least a few men and families with grudges against the Celts from battles passed and while Tadhg ensured that none of those men accompanied them, he had no control over how the Vikings felt about their presence in Kattegat.
“If anything happens to the Celtic King or those in his company, consequences shall be given. Ragnar made peace with the Celts before. There were no such objections and there will be none now.” Ivar called, making the hall go silent. Kiora couldn’t keep the pride from her face as she watched this manhandle his people. She remembered Ragnar wielded the same power of presence and it was clear that his son inherited the same. When the people remained quiet, showing their silent obedience, Ivar waved them away as he motioned for Tadhg to come to him. Tadhg obeyed, stepping up and bending down so Ivar could say, quietly in his ear, “I should like you and your sister to join me for dinner tomorrow tonight.”
“With you and the Queen?” Tadhg asked, softly, casting a glance to Freydis as he straightened a little to face Ivar. Ivar didn’t even glance in her direction before shaking his head and saying, “No. Alone. I shall send a slave when you are ready.”
Tadhg crossed an arm over his chest and stepped back before turning to Kiora and giving her a look.
“What have I done?” She asked as she turned to follow him out of the hall.
“You must remember your place, Sister. Ivar has a wife. You are not children any longer.” Tadhg said. Kiora let out a soft scoff, rolling her eyes as she let the conversation drop for the time being.
~
The night went on, the feast was had and every Celt and Viking enjoyed in the festivities and each other; drinking, fighting and laughing. Kiora sat next to Tadhg, Davan beside her, while Freydis sat beside Ivar, the two kings next to each other. Their usual feasts took place in the hall, but for such an occasion, one both their fathers wanted to see happen, Ivar allowed Tadhg’s request to have it out among the people, complete with a roaring fire for their women to dance around. Soon enough, the women of Kattegat joined their Celt sisters, each chanting in their language to the gods.
Once the men joined, Davan excused herself from Kiora’s conversation and took her husband’s hand, leading him to the fire and beginning to dance. Ivar turned to Freydis and whispered something to her that made her glare at him, leaning away from him. Ivar sat back and turned to Kiora with a smile. He called to her, “Kiora. Come sit by me.”
Freydis gave a soft huff and stood, hurriedly making her way back to the hall. Kiora turned to him and smiled, switching seats. Ivar smirked and pushed a few curls behind her ear as she looked up at him.
“Tell me, Ivar.” Kiora started with a sweet smile. “When did you start walking?”
Ivar chuckled, as did she, and reached for his cup to take a sip. Balancing the cup on his knee he said, “Back in York. About a year ago, now.”
With a soft chuckle, Kiora said, “And I bet I can still outrun you.”
Ivar snickered and said, “On foot perhaps. But not on horseback, my sweet Kia.” Ivar brushed the backs of his fingers across her cheek and smiled. They met more than once as children, as Esca sailed back to Kattegat, hoping to find Ragnar and continue their talk of an alliance, but when he found only Aslaug, Bjorn and the 4 little Ragnarssons, he was much dismayed. With permission from Aslaug, Esca stayed an extra day to let his men rest from a long trip. 5 years since they first met, Kiora only caught a passing glance at the youngest Lothbrok, as he slithered around with his brothers. A passing glance for her, but Ivar drank in every sight of her he could. She had grown from a small child of 8 to a young woman of 13. While Tadhg was the only other one to call her Kia, Ivar took a liking to the name, often using it to tease her as he and his brothers chased her down through the streets of Kattegat, Ivar’s cart rumbling as he shouted at her from it.
Kiora’s face softened a touch at the name and leaned closer to say, softly, “Tadhg hardly calls me that anymore. Only when he truly means it.” Ivar chuckled and said, “Then you are my Kia, and only mine.”
Kiora chuckled and shook her head. She knew the look in his eye, she’d seen it in many men back in Ireland. She looked at him and said, “Ivar, you have a wife. You are married. I belong to no one.”
Ivar shrugged and said, “Soon.” When Kiora tilted her head, giving him a questioning look, he simply chuckled and took another sip of his ale, watching his people and hers dance.
~
“How did you find the king?” Tadhg asked as he watched Kiora braid her hair. Kiora glanced at him with a small smile and said, “Very changed. He’s a man now. No longer the sniveling little boy that chased me from his cart.”
Tadhg chuckled at the memory and nodded in agreeance. “That he is.” Tadhg shifted and gave a soft sigh, waving one of his slaves over to pour him more ale. “I’ve heard rumors about him, Kia.”
Kiora paused her braiding for a moment, slightly taken aback by the nickname, and glanced at him as she tied her last braid off. “What have you heard?” She asked, tossing her hair over her shoulder.
“I’ve heard his wife, Freydis has convinced him he’s a god,” Tadhg said. Kiora blinked and turned to her brother fully.
“A god,” Kiora repeated in shock. “Why would she do such a thing?”
Tadhg shrugged and stood. “I do not know. But it seems as though ever since he married Freydis, things have changed.” He said. Glancing over his shoulder at his sister, he added, “You are aware she had a child?”
“His child?” Kiora questioned at the addition. Tadhg smirked into his cup as he turned away. Kiora stood from the bench she sat on and said, “Was she pregnant before they married?”
“No. She was a slave before Ivar freed her. Apparently,” He cast a glance to the slave girl at his side, “According to the rumors, she made him believe with just his blood she could conceive a child, a god’s child.”
“He made no mention of a child, his or otherwise,” Kiora said. Tadhg turned back to her and set down his cup shaking his head. Bracing his hands on the table in front of him he said, “They found the child in the wild. Left for the wolves. They say it was disfigured.”
Kiora put a hand to her chest and gave a small sigh. “How did it get left in the wild?” She asked. When Tadhg didn't answer with the same quickness as he gave the others, Kiora tilted her head and stepped closer to him. “How, Tadhg? Why won’t you tell me?”
Tadhg looked at his sister and said, “Do you still want to love him?” Kiora straightened, surprised by the suggestion. But she couldn’t cover up her shock, as she stumbled over herself to say, “Who-What makes you think that? I’ve met him all but once.”
“Twice.” Tadhg corrected. Kiora shook her hand and waved her hand at him, dismissively, as she turned away from him. “In passing.” She said. “I never spoke to him.”
She stood by the fire for a moment, arms crossed over her chest before she turned to him and asked, “Is she going to get in the way of this alliance?”
“She shouldn’t. Ivar doesn’t want her anymore, yet he cannot bring himself to divorce her.” Tadhg said, scooping up his cup to drain it dry. Kiora gave a soft snort and said, “Why doesn’t he just kill her then?”
“You could be killed yourself for such talk, Sister,” Tadhg said, giving her a look. “She is still Queen.”
“Yes, Brother.” She said, giving him a look back. “And I am the sister of the King. You are my blood. She is not blood, nor is she royalty.”
“It would not matter. If you anger Ivar, I cannot go against him. We do not have our men here, Kiora. We cannot fight them.” Tadhg said. “Keep your temper long enough for us to make allies of these Vikings.”
“And if I cannot?” She questioned. Tadhg gave her a hard look and said, “Then you will join Father sooner than you think.”
Kiora straightened, indignant at his blunt response, but knew he was right. Tadhg let his gaze linger on his sister a little longer to make his point before he moved from his place and said, “Get some rest, Kiora. We’ve a long stay in Kattegat.”
As Tadhg moved past her, he stopped to give her forehead a soft kiss, then headed to his room where his wife lay sleeping. Kiora didn’t move from her spot, but as she straightened and raised her chin, she asked again, “How did the child get left in the wild, Tadhg?”
Tadhg stopped in the doorway, giving a soft sigh before he, as well, repeated, “Get some rest, Kia.”
~
“So. How is the king?” Freydis asked as she brushed out her hair. Ivar sighed from his seat on their bed as his braces were removed and said, “As I remember him. Ever his father.”
Freydis gave a soft ‘Hmm’ then said, “And the princess?” Ivar turned to her, his face scrunched up in annoyance.
“Why are you pestering me with your questions, Freydis?” He asked. She tossed her brush onto the table and said, “Am I not still Queen? Should I not know these visitors that come seeking an alliance with us?”
“Not for much longer, my love.” Ivar sneered before turning his back to her. “I will find another to warm my bed in your place.”
“I am your wife and your Queen, Ivar. You cannot-” Freydis’ words were cut off by Ivar flying across the bed and clawing at her dress to bring her down to his level, holding her by her throat.
“You were nothing before me!” He hissed at her. “I freed you. I am the reason you are even queen at all! Do not speak to me this way or you’ll lose your place sooner than you think!”
Ivar launched her across the room before he crawled under the furs and glared at her. “You may find another room to sleep in tonight. It has been a very long day. Get out of my sight.”
Rubbing her neck, Freydis picked herself up and slowly made her way out of the room, leaving Ivar by himself.

1, 14 and 20 for Bearach & 3, 9 and 11 for Kiora pls!
Bearach
1) Are they woodier or leafier? Succulent, deciduous, evergreen? Woodier and evergreen. His skin is pretty tough, though some parts of it look softer than they really are. He’s never bloomed, so he doesn’t know what the flowers would look or feel like, either. (They’d be little pink flowers like on a dogwood tree!)
14) what did they see in their Dream? Dragons, armies, and people rallying under him. All signs in his dream pointed toward him leading the fight against the elder dragons and he’s never once doubted or shied away from his responsibility.
20) their biggest secret? He’s a bit lonely. There’s so much he has to look over and take care of that it doesn’t leave much time for socializing. He’s always been more of a lone wolf anyway so he usually doesn’t mind, but sometimes when he sees the rest of his team and the Pack laughing and having a good time together he wishes he was able to, too.
Kiora
3) what kind of climate are they most comfortable in? Something wet and warm with frequent rain. Better if its by the ocean.
9) what are their opinions on Trahearne? She never really met Trahearne. She saw him from afar in Orr while she was with the Vigil, but never needed to interact directly with him. Being from another Mother Tree she didn’t have that family connection to him, either. He was just another sylvari fighting against the dragons to her.
11) random headcanon! She loves taking baths, and when she found out bubble baths were a thing she spent hours refreshing the bubbles and warm water and just lounging in it.

Gatewatch Predictions for War: Oaths or no Oaths, that is the question.
Who (if anyone) is joining the Gatewatch during WAR?
Recently Maro gave one of his infamous ‘maybes’ to whether or not there would be Oaths in WAR, and that got me thinking. See, with 36 planeswalkers in the set, they obviously have to have a significant portion of the set care about them (either to buff or kill them). Oaths would be a perfect subtype for this environment, but Magic isn't just going to throw them in for no reason - it has to make sense in the story. So the question shouldn't be ‘Is there any Oaths in WAR?’, but instead ‘Would anyone who will be present want/be willing to join the Gatewatch?’. That is what this piece is all about.
A quick disclaimer: I'm not like VorthosJay, SEV7, or the other big vorthos. I don't usually have the time, resources, or energy to make big speculation pieces, and on top of that I haven't read the art book on Ravnica, so I may miss something in there. On another note, writing this piece doesn't mean I am convinced someone will join this set, it's just how likely do I think it could happen.
So… where to start? Well, the first thing we can do is some basic elimination. First off, Maro has stated there will be other planeswalkers in the set not in cards, and we can eliminate them off the bat. There is no way they will give an oath to someone who doesn't get a card. Next, we can remove the Gatewatch itself, for obvious reasons, as well as Bolas. That reduces us from 36 to 29.
For the record, I reference a lot of stories that have been written over the past several years, all of which can be found in the story gallery on Magic's website. For each walker, I'll do a rating of 1 (least likely) to 5 (most likely). Here's more detail on what each number means:
0) If this walker joins the Gatewatch in WAR, I give up Magic.
1) I mean.. there's a chance, I guess...
2) Its possible, but unlikely
3) It could happen, I'll give you that. Maybe even likely. Maybe.
4) This walker has a good shot, if the story calls for it. Not guaranteed though.
5) If this walker does not join the Gatewatch in WAR, I give up Magic.
Now, let's do this from order of their pics in this website, starting with...
SAMUT
So not only does Samut hate Bolas, she knows the members of the Gatewatch too. Seems like it should be a shoe-in. Buuuuuut… last we saw her, she was pretty devoted to trying to rebuild Amonkhet, and much less interested in leaving her world. Now, she could say something like “I want to make sure no world ends up like mine”, which would be a good reason to join, but I'm not holding my breath.
Chance to join: 3/5
ASHIOK
Ashiok is a big mystery, and Maro has made it clear they want to keep them that way. On top of that, they are definitely in the antagonist category. No way this will happen.
Chance to join: 0/5
???
If Ashiok is a mystery, this character is even more so at the moment. People have… 2 main ideas, from what I can tell. The biggest is Elspeth, which to be honest I doubt because her in the Theros underworld is a huge reason to go back and no way would they deal with it offscreen. The other big one I have heard is Tacenda from the novella Children of the Nameless (slight spoilers for the novella below), but Tacenda seems like a strange choice for this particular artwork for a few reasons. Firstly, we don't know if Tacenda is a planeswalker, it is kept intentionally vague. Secondly, the art screams a white/blue walker, where as Tacenda is decidedly not white/blue. There are a few other theories, but regardless, we don't know who it is so I can't speculate on what they might do.
Chance to join: ?/5
DOMRI
Domri is at the moment on Bolas's side, but here's where I get to another interesting piece of speculation of mine: Bolas does not really care for the walkers he uses, and I fully believe he intends to sacrifice them with all the others. That being said… Domri is a teenager, who just took control of his guild, and I suspect a bit of classic gruul rioting from him. Doubt he'd be interested in joining the Gatewatch.
Chance to join: 1/5
TEYO VERADA
On the one hand, Teyo is on the cover of the upcoming Magic book all about WAR, which makes me feel like they're a more major player than some of the walkers (or they just wanted one of the new walkers on the book to promote speculation like this). On the other hand though, like the mystery character before, we know nothing about this individual. The real issue is that they are new. So far, every walker added to the Gatewatch has been an established character, which is (as far as I can tell) because the Gatewatch is the main protagonist group in Magic and they want popular characters the players have established connections with to be members. Now, the book could go a long way to developing Teyo, which would help big time in making us invested, but that's still an unknown element. While I suspect Teyo is the most likely of the new characters to join, I still doubt they stand a chance.
Chance to join: 2/5
RAL ZERAK
Does anyone else remember that twist when we learned Ral was working for Bolas? I was shocked! Over time though, we have learned bits and pieces of how this might not be an entirely… loyal relationship. The biggest reason comes from the artbook (I know I said I haven't read it, but lo and behold I HAVE FRIENDS) , where we learn he owes Bolas “an old debt”. What's more, he is also working with Niv-Mizzet to combat Bolas, and is only foiled at the last minute by Dovin. If he was really on Bolas's side, then he would have sabotaged it before Dovin needed to step in. Couple this with my sub-theory of Bolas sacrificing his walkers, and Ral is definitely ending on the side of the Gatewatch. Does that mean he'll join? I think no, for 2 reasons. One, he is very devoted to his guild and plane, like Samut, but secondly this guy crossed Bolas. I suspect at least one of the characters to cross Bolas will realize that can be a fatal mistake. He's currently my number 2 for most likely of Bolas's minions to bite the dust. Whose #1? Keep reading!
Chances of joining: 2/5
TAMIYO
Tamiyo made it clear back at the end of Shadows over Innistrad why she wouldn't join then… or did she? When I reread ‘The Promised End’ to make this piece (an excellent Innistrad story if you haven't read it), I realized they never gave her reason, and it seems to me that it's far more likely she refused because of what she just went through (Spoilers, she literally was taken over by Emrakul and used to power up the spell trapping Emrakul into the moon). So what about now? Her friend Ajani is currently involved, and not only does she know the Gatewatch, but she is friendly with Jace as well. While the pieces are there, she's a storyteller and a scientist, not a warrior, and in the end there's a good chance she'll continue that route and not join.
Chance to join: 3/5
KARN
Just last world, Karn declined joining the Gatewatch because he plans to work towards destroying New Phyrexia once this is over, and I don't think anything in this set is going to change his mind. Finally, a short and sweet one.
Chance to join: 1/5
JAYA BALARD
Just like Karn, she declined, stating “I'm not a joiner”, and just like Karn, I don't think this set will change her mind. Boom, even shorter!
Chance to join: 1/5
TIBALT
No. (I HAVE REACHED THE PINNACLE OF SHORTNESS)
Chance to join: 0/5
???
This character is widely suspected to be Mu Yangling, one of the two walkers from the first Global Series. From what little we know of her, I don't see any reason she would or wouldn't join, but I suspect she is still too new to the scene to be added in by wizards.
Chance to join: 1/5
KIORA
Kiora is not what I would call a willing team player, if her actions during Battle for Zendikar showed anything. Thinking her world was lost, she even tried betraying the Gatewatch, and last we saw of her was walking in shock along the shoreline. So where does that put her now? She's a teammate in a pinch, but for the same reasons she didn't team up with the other walkers in BfZ will be the same reason she doesn't join here, as much as I would love her to. Still, she's established, and the team lost their G/U member recently, so I won't completely shut the door.
Chance to join: 2/5
SORIN
If we don't hear how he got out of the rock, and he doesn't have the rock with him, I riot.
On a serious note though, I really don't see this happening. What I do see happening is a massive issue between Sorin, Nahiri, Ugin, and Ob Nixilius. This will be the first time in literally thousands of years that the three who locked away the Eldrazi are together in one place, and if that is not addressed in some way, even minor, I really will riot.
Chance to join: 1/5
Chance to cause drama: 5/5
ANGRATH
Oh man, Angrath. Like Tamiyo is a mother, our boy Angrath is a father, but being he is B/R he is definitely much more of a… angry person. Why bring this up? Because he just got home to see his kids after years of being trapped on Ixalan, and now he's being dragged to Ravnica. The only one more likely to riot than Domri is Angrath right here. But will he join the Gatewatch? While I think there's potential, it just doesn't seem likely to me.
Chance to join: 2/5
DOVIN BAAN
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Dovin has to really dislike the Gatewatch, given the events of Kaladesh. Even if Bolas does sacrifice his walkers with all the rest, there is no reason I can come up with where'd he would want to join the Gatewatch.
Chance to join: 0/5
ARLINN KORD
Hmm, this is an interesting case. Our solo werewolf walker who can't transform when not on Innistrad, meaning she is stuck as wolf or human depending how she leaves Innistrad. She was on Innistrad during SoI block, but didn't interact with the Gatewatch at all. I don't think she'll join, but who knows, she could be the dark horse candidate here.
Chance to join: 1/5
OB NIXILIUS
Hey, remember how I said Dovin probably really dislikes the Gatewatch? Well Ob here flat out despises them, given the BfZ block. I wouldn't be surprised if he actively sabotages them in some way or shape, and the only reason I could see that not happening is because someone he hates even more is here: Nahiri.
Chance to join: 0/5
JIANG YANGGU
Yanggu sits in the same spot as the mystery character people suspect to be Mu. For sheer cuteness reasons though (Mowu is adorable, and no one can tell me differently), I'll bump him up one number.
Chance to join: 2/5
HAUTLI
Like Arlinn, I don't think this one is likely. She has no major connection to the Gatewatch, and she's still relatively new. Hoping for some cute moment with Saheeli or Angrath though… oh, who am I kidding. This is WAR, cute moments are probably not happening.
Chance to join: 1/5
SARKHAN
Here's my principle question: where does Sarkhan go from where he ended on Tarkir? Unlike Narset, he's not connected to the Story Circle (that we know of at least), so what's left? In the last story from Tarkir, called Unbowed and Unbroken, he tells Ugin that he wants revenge for what Bolas did to him and to Ugin, so if the Bolas saga was still going strong I could see him join but this seems very much like a finale. The other thing he says, this time to Narset, is that like Narset he is exactly where he wants to be. So… that means one of two things, Narset or Tarkir. If it's Narset, then depending what she does, I suspect he'll follow. If it's Tarkir, then he's going home.
Chance to join: 2/5
SAHEELI
Saheeli is the first one so far that I feel ok giving higher than a 3. Saheeli has worked significantly with the Gatewatch during the Kaladesh block, and when asked if she wanted to join (during the story titled Breakpoints), at first she told Chandra that she was more worried about the current fight, and then stated that she wasn't sure because there was more to do on Kaladesh in the aftermath. Since then we got a glimpse of her at the end of Ixalan block with Hautli, but nothing substantial there.
Unlike others, her decline to join was more of an “Ehhh, not right now”, then a straight no. She has at least somewhat of an emotional attachment with the fans, with many disappointed she didn't receive more screen time on Kaladesh, and even people asking Maro on tumblr to add her to the Gatewatch. On top of that, it's been a bit of time in game, several months, since the end of the Kaladesh block, and honestly I could see her agreeing to join if Kaladesh has healed somewhat and she sees just how dangerous the threats that could reach her world are.
Chance to join: 4/5
NARSET
Narset is another I feel could fit in the group, but for different reasons than Saheeli. Narset has never met even a single member of the Gatewatch, with the possible exception of Ajani offscreen. But, Ajani gathering allies very easily could acquire the help of members of the story circle, namely Narset. Fans really have taken to her, so much so in fact that fans are the reason Narset is in the story circle in the first place, so the attachment needed to be eligible to join the Gatewatch is much more in place than most of our contenders here. Narset would be an interesting addition, but there's a big roadblock: the group already has a W/U walker, and while I suspect this to change at some point, so far there are no walkers in the Gatewatch that are the same colors. Due to this, I'm not as confident she'll be joining this time around.
Chance to join: 3/5
NAHIRI
Oh, Nahiri, the only other person on this list beside Sorin that I feel the need to add a drama chance counter to the end of her paragraph. She caused the entire Emrakul fiasco on Innistrad, and with both Sorin and Ob pissed at her, as well as her possibly pissed at Ugin, joining the Gatewatch seems low on her to do list.
Chance to join: 0/5
Chance to cause drama: 5/5
UGIN
Last time he met the Gatewatch, Ugin left them on, while not bad, certainly not good terms either. It remains to be seen how he'll react to the evolved and larger group now, but I honestly believe having Ugin as a Gatewatch member would be a disservice to both his character and the Gatewatch as a whole. He's basically a less evil but still morally-grey (to us mortals) version of Bolas, and having that type of power in the Gatewatch would really destabilize what Magic has been trying to build. So no, this is not going to happen.
Chance to join: 0/5
DAVRIEL CANE
Now here is an intriguing fact. During an AMA Sanderson did on Children of the Nameless (where we met Davriel) on reddit (link here), Sanderson mentioned that Magic specifically requested he make a walker as they had a role for a walker in the future, and they wanted this new walker to fill it. Now, Davriel is in his first set, and I have a few questions. This role… is it for this set? What exactly is this mysterious role? Is he to be a villain, an antihero, or even a hero (though that last one seems unlikely)? While there's nothing here pointing to him joining the Gatewatch (plus the negative that he's a new character) I would love for him to join just to see the interactions between him and Liliana. I bet they would haaaaaate each other, and it would be hilarious.
Chance to join:1/5
VRASKA
Now here's a fan favorite to join! I would love for her to join too, and the pieces are all aligned - she knows a member of the Gatewatch (that's kind of an understatement), is an established character, and the fan base has a huge attachment to her at this point. What could go wrong? Well… three things. Firstly, she doesn't seem like the type of person to join the group (but frankly that one is just my opinion and the most minor of the three) and secondly, she is now the leader of the Golgari, and that's been her goal for awhile. To join the Gatewatch would probably mean giving up her position, and why would she do that when she worked so hard to get where she is now? As for the third… I hate that I am writing this… but she could get murdered to death.
Let me explain.
Remember how I said with Ral how one of the walkers betraying Bolas may realize this can be a fatal mistake? Well, she's my number one pick for this, because if anyone were to die outside of the Gatewatch, I firmly believe that Vraska would result in the most emotional response from the audience. Even worse, with her connection to Jace, there's a chance she could get fridged, though I hope and plea Magic is better than that.
Pushing that uncomfortable thought aside, if she can A) survive this set, and B) figures out how to juggle the Golgari with the Gatewatch, then she's probably poised to join. It's just doing those two things that are the issue.
Chance to join: 3/5
KAYA
Kaya's a mercenary, and that alone makes me hesitant in thinking she would join the Gatewatch. But before writing her off completely, let's do a deeper dive into her character. To begin, she's of noble blood, but “she and her kin had never stood on ceremony” (taken from “Laid to Rest”), and in that same story we see that while she's a mercenary, she doesn't do thievery, murder, or espionage. Kaya focuses on getting rid of ghosts who have overstayed their welcome. While I don't want to give spoilers, the last thing we learn in this story is that her sense of justice is greater than her desire for coin, which we see again in Ravnica when she begins releasing all the Orzhov ghosts from their debts. Speaking of Ravnica, she joined with Bolas in exchange for him helping her family, which screams to me that she doesn't actually know Bolas. Couple that with A) Bolas is likely to sacrifice his walkers, and B) she's one walkers on the cover of the book, and I'm expecting big things from her. Joining the Gatewatch? Still not totally convinced, especially since she's newish, but big things nonetheless.
(Last Minute Edit: In the Weekly MTG that just came out yesterday, link here, Greg Wiseman says he enjoyed writing Kaya and she has to make a big decision at some point - this totally fits with me expecting something big!)
Chance to join: 3/5
NISSA
I know what you're thinking, either “SHE SHOULD HAVE NEVER LEFT THIS IS AN OUTRAGE WE NEED HER BACK NOW”, or “SHE ALREADY LEFT THE GROUP YOU IDIOT WHY WOULD SHE JOIN NOW!?!”, and to both I say, please stop shouting. Besides, calling me an idiot is kind of rude.
At one point, awhile back, Maro stated on his tumblr that if a walker were to leave and rejoin, they probably would get a new oath, which is the only reason Nissa is on this list. Do I think she will rejoin? Depends largely on if and how her reason for leaving in the first place is addressed. Remember, in the story she is disgusted at Liliana and says, “I can't bear to see another plane broken before I make my own home whole. I'm sorry, but my watch is over.” (This is from Return to Dominaria, Episode 1). The Liliana bit is not ending well, as while Liliana is being forced to work with Bolas, Nissa doesn't know this and instead will probably assume the opposite. As for the second, we have no idea how Zendikar has healed.
All that being said, two things do work in her favor. Firstly, she came to Ravnica instead of ignoring whatever beacon Ral created. That has to mean something. Secondly, she just evolved from monogreen to G/U, and while it was slowly and sneakily well done, it seems a waste to remove her after such a change. Hopefully they address the reasons she left so she can return.
Chance to join: 3/5
VIVIAN RIED
Now we come to the last walker in our list and the newest walker to our roster pre-WAR. If you have read her bio and the series of stories on her, then you know that she hates Bolas with a passion, which is good for this scenario. So other than her newness, she would work great, right? Ewwww, I doubt it. Vivian truly seems like a force of nature, who can be good or bad depending on the situation. She dislikes civilization in general, so I would bet we'll see that in the city plane of Ravnica. Despite not being red, she's too chaotic of a character to be a good fit for the Gatewatch, and even if she joined she would eventually leave, just like Nissa but probably with more violence.
Chance to join: 1/5
So that's it! Let's quickly recap by looking where everyone ended up (subtracting the mystery characters):
0) Ashiok, Tibalt, Dovin, Ob Nixilius, Nahiri, Ugin
1) Domri, Karn, Jaya, Sorin, Arlinn, Hautli, Davriel, Vivian
2) Teyo, Ral, Kiora, Angrath, Yanggu, Sarkhan
3) Samut, Tamiyo, Narset, Vraska, Kaya, Nissa
4) Saheeli
5) none made it this high
You may be curious why I didn't rank anyone at 5, and that leads into my final thought for this piece. Just like no one has to die to make a good story (though, maybe this is hypocritical, but I'll amazed if no one falls in this particular story, especially after watching yesterday's WeeklyMTG… well the first 20 minutes, then I fell asleep cause I was watching it at like 11:30 at night), the Gatewatch doesn't need new members every new world/arc. We have seen this on both Amonkhet and Ixalan, and it could happen again here. Still, if someone does join, I am convinced it will be one of the 7 walkers listed in either groups 4 or 3. I admit I ranked all the new characters low, and there could be a surprise oath from one of them, but history has shown they don't add new walkers to the Gatewatch, so I feel comfortable with their standings in the rating.
This has been fun to make! Feel free to share and discuss, I would love to hear others thoughts on this! Until next time!

About the Character: Kiora Trevelyan
Tagged by: @red-wardens ((and here’s the post!))
Tagging: @thedisc0panda and @zeesqueere and anyone who sees this! Tag me if you do it so I can see!
———–
― your muse’s name:
Kiora Trevelyan
― a favorite picture / faceclaim of your muse:
— More under the cut! —
― two headcanons you have for your muse:
Kiora is the closest thing to a demonologist that Southern Thedas has to offer. Her “profession” isn’t approved by the Chantry, of course, but she’s far more knowledgeable about the inner workings of the Fade than most Circle mages, as she’s not only spent far more time asleep and observing the dream world than most, but she wasn’t shy in approaching spirits. Where most mages try to avoid spirits in the Fade—as they may be demons—Kiora wasn’t scared to introduce herself. She’s been possessed a few times, but not only was she able to distract the more hostile demons long enough to exorcise them, but she was often pleasant enough to convince them to leave before they turned her into an abomination.
She’s well-versed in the world of elfroot. Kiora loves almost nothing more than relaxing with a good elfroot cigar, a cat, and a horror novel. She managed to convince the Templars of the Ostwick Circle to let the mages grow elfroot inside the Tower, lowering the conflict considerably. Mages, when they’re just giggling and sleeping, require a lot less discipline—just more corralling.
― three things that your muse likes doing in their free time:
Smoking: Kiora loves smoking. Loves it. Despite already being a very calm person, she finds elfroot smoking relaxing, and loves the steady rhythm of inhaling and exhaling and feeling the warm smoke curl around her lungs. Smoking was one of the few things in the Circle she could count on to be non-stressful. Having another person to smoke with only makes it better.
Cuddling with her cats: Kiora loves her cats! So much! Socks, Duke, Duchess, Spook, Miss Match, and Patches all hold a special place in her heart. Trevelyan castle had no shortage of fluffy, pampered housecats, and the Ostwick Circle had the cutest little mousers. Her magic is infectious, and if she spends enough time with a cat, she can meet up with their spirits in the Fade, granted that they’re sleeping. Whether it be in the waking world or in the Fade, Kiora is always happy to have a sleepy black cat in her arms.
Reading horror novels: Even if her sweet personality convinces most people that Kiora is simply an innocent girl with an affinity for black and violet, her more Gothic appearance actually does reflect quite a bit of her innermost being. She loves to sit and relax with a good horror novel, enjoying the gory, graphic ones the most. She’s so passive and soft-spoken she just needs to read about a horrific murderer every once in a while...
― seven people your muse loves / likes:
Sera: Kiora is in love with Sera. So much. She could rattle on for ages about how much she loves her hair and her voice and her energy and her smile and her everything. Her and Sera’s relationship is an “opposites-attract” one to most looking on—what with their polar opposite looks, dress, energy levels, etc—but they’re actually quite similar, and agree on the fact that everybody deserves a chance to live free as themselves. And that nobles are annoying.
Anders: Kiora has a love for Anders that most non-mages could never even hope to understand. She was terrified of the idea of being free from the Circle at first, as she had no idea how to survive outside thick stone walls, but as soon as she got her first taste of freedom, she couldn’t have been more grateful. No more long nights consoling abused mages and shooing away all the persistent demons that dwelled in the Tower. She longs to meet him one day, to finally be able to thank the man that made it possible for her to breathe fresh air and fall in love. She knows she’d never be able to express her love and gratitude, but she would love to try.
Cole: Kiora loves Cole and Cole loves Kiora. She all but adopted him as her weird little spirit son the second she saw him, and he immediately grew to like her. She may not be stupid, but her thoughts are quiet and gentle, and he appreciates hearing the memories of a kindhearted stoner than some of the more... intense companions. Her cats love him, and they help ground him to reality when he gets too lost in the loud thoughts of the tavern patrons. Once he becomes more human and starts sleeping, she visits him whenever she can to talk to him in the Fade. Her and Cole are close enough to force Sera to interact with him, and, with enough time, even Sera came around to liking him. Even if he is a little creepy.
The Iron Bull and Blackwall : Kiora adores Bull and Blackwall the same! They’re so sweet to her, and despite the two of them being so different, they both care for her like a kinda simple, sweet little lesbian daughter. Kiora loves cozying up on Bull’s giant lap, and she loves sitting in the stables and watching/listening to Blackwall whittle. Sometimes, she’ll drink and play cards with Bull and the Chargers, and other times, she’ll paint the toys Blackwall makes. She’s got very delicate hands that are quite good at detailed little hobbies.
The Warden (Redren): Kiora, when first hearing about the Warden, was utterly terrified of him. An apostate mage who could rip darkspawn apart with a wave of a staff, known for being aggressive and unfeeling, getting into bloody conflicts with Templars, and who maybe killed the King of Ferelden? The eleven-year-old Kiora was utterly terrified of ever meeting such a man. However, as she got older, and especially once she got shipped to the Circle at fourteen, she came to appreciate the Warden more. How was it possible for a mage to stand up for himself like that? When she became Inquisitor, her respect for the Warden doubled. Leading an organization was stressful, it was a wonder he hadn’t gone mad...!
Dorian: Kiora loves Dorian very much. Of course, learning he was from Tevinter made her nervous—as such a fact makes most in the South nervous—but once she got to know him, she came to really like him. Of course, he can be a little too confrontational for her at times, but for the most part, he’s fun to be around. He’s certainly more flamboyant than her, but they both share a love for eye-catching fashion. As a very empathetic person, she could relate to being a family outcast, and took Dorian in with open and squishy arms.
Vivienne: She and Vivienne may disagree on Circle politics, but Kiora really enjoys the presence of another Circle-raised mage. They were both well-respected in the Circles, and they’re both willing to agree to disagree. They appreciate fine clothing, intricate magic, and a nice glass of red wine. Not to mention, Kiora’s cats love curling around Vivienne’s waist, and no amount of white clothing can keep those cats from cuddling a mage.
― a phobia your muse has:
Kiora’s incredibly terrified of being useless. She’s spent her entire mage-existence being used by others, and she’s been so indoctrinated into the fact the usefulness equals the right to exist, and being tossed aside because nobody needs her is a terrifying concept. Mages that weren’t useful were Tranquil. Kiora helps keep her fears at bay by not only throwing herself into situations where she could be used to help, but by making sure that she’s always taking care of her cats and making herself useful to them. Constant reaffirmation is the best way to keep her from doubting herself, whether that be through thanks, smiles, or happy little purrs.

Faves
i.e. stuff you can definitely expect to see me write something about in the near future:
Ob Nixilis, including polyships with readerxDack and readerxDavriel, both of which were inspired by interactions within War of the Spark, DESPITE THE FACT that I ignore it as canon and denounce Ob Nix’s characterization in it.
Other characters, in short: Sarkhan, Vraska, Kiora, Lazav, Gonti, Nissa.
Modern AU’s for sure, and likely several others
Which is not to say I won’t write anything outside this list, these are just my darlings. I’m also finding the fact that I haven’t actually read that much canon yet to be pretty limiting - imagine that. So I’m working on that too.
I plan to start posting one ficlet per day once I get a few built up. Consistency is a challenge right now, but I’m SUPER enjoying 4thewords!!
