god the pilot had the tone down. nat trips on acid pre-crash and sees her creepy classmate misty across the flames in a way that could just as easily be misty stalking her/the team from the outskirts as it could be a hallucination (i go back and forth on this all the time). then the bonfire turns into the fire from their cannibalistic rituals in the wilderness which seemingly implies that nat sees into the future for a moment but it could just be part of the nonlinear editing. pj harvey's eerie down by the water holds you by the hand and pulls you in deeper as the screen gets engulfed in flames. such a loaded and dualistic and tone-setting sequence. i want to live inside it

Rambling but
Trey is a very subtle character. Unlike most twst memebers a lot about him isn't explicitly said. He spends a lot of his time crafting a perfect image, so an outside perspective of him is difficult to present without there being certain biases in the way characters view him (Leona expecting there to be something more to his dream before realizing no it's just him wanting to bake to his hearts content or Rook believing that he's making tarts filled with love for Riddle but he himself is doing it out of necessity.) He keeps a lot of his emotions close to his chest too so it's not like he's going to talk about it himself. He doesn't soliloquize often. If you noticed in the maze section of Riddle's dream, he barely verbalized his own thoughts about the change in leadership, it was all "cater" driving the conversation. He's introverted and worries a lot about his perception to the point that he stifles what he wants to say in favor of smiling and tentatively manipulating the situation to remain comfortable. (Which Cater points out in Book 1 but THAT got mistranslated from Cater scolding Trey to Cater scolding himself about being more honest with his opinions which doesn't help the lack of understanding that people seem to have) Because he puts so much emphasis on his normalcy, fans seem to have a high expectation for his weirdness when it's kinda been in front of us the whole time. We're not the characters. He's not trying to fool us-- we have an omniscient view into everything he does. So it's obvious looking at it that he has a habit of being smothering/overdoing things. Vil points it out in maschef that he never really gives others space to grow because he's always there to cover every mistake. He hates mustard but believes he can get over it by forcing mustard into every food he can think of until someone had to stop him from putting it in cake and eating it. He's super fixated on dental hygiene and he gets tempted to bake so many different things, purchasing recipe books for fun, before reminding himself to reel it in because making too many would make it so that there was nowhere for those sweets to go. I feel like a lot of people missed a key point of his dream and that is I think Trey feels helpless a lot. A lot of the situations he ends up in are not in his control. So that's why he dotes and placates so that he can try to keep some semblance of it. An illusion of it. So his dream is a place where he doesn't have to do all these things to keep control. He just has it. He has his freedom to do as he likes without it costing him anything. A friend, his parent's dignity, the dorm. He doesn't need to be afraid of any of it. So he allows himself a faulty degree of overindulgence because peace and normalcy doesn't hinge on him. In the real world, every cake he prepared was for peace. But this time the cakes were just cakes. They weren't secretly disguised peace treaties or white flags. In the real world each baked good is within a rule or serves a purpose. In his dream, they can just exist. Just like him. Well anyway sorry brain went all over the place.

what's with the sudden "anti" obsession??
not very active lately so it's a little surprising, especially since both your and fox-guardian's versions are different than the og "anti-tulpar" au and all
not complaining or anything just a little confused and curious
Don't even worry about it.

tim drake would rather die than kill innocent people and tim drake killed hundreds of supervillain henchpeople with long-range detonation explosives that one time are two separate headcanons that, contrary to what the fandom discourse would have you believe, can actually coexist at the same time.
there’s even a psychologist term for it.
it’s called compartmentalization!

So, while I am happy that Sinners is/has been receiving so much love and acclaim, drawing in a big fanbase and such, a discussion needs to be had. While I normally don't go telling people what to write, there's something deeply unsettling about how certain fics for Sinners are being made. While I don't necessarily mind Remmick fics, as I see the appeal, it's deeply uncomfortable to hear about some writers creating a Remmick x reader, who is the daughter of a slave owner, or having the reader be a part of the Klan (this is wild just to say alone). Sinners features a predominantly Black cast and has a large Black fanbase, some of whom can be found on Tumblr, so imagine this being the case and coming on to this app and seeing someone write such a thing. That, on top of how many instances there are with the Black characters, who are the main characters, being pushed out or written in ways that go past mischaracterization to borderline dehumanizing/stereotypical (the Sammie/Remmick fics being in more abundance than Sammie/Pearline, who often gets ignored or is villainize....tale old as time, but disheartening none the less). Don't even get me started on the incest fics. There's something deeply disturbing about, again, a predominantly Black movie with majority Black characters, being, not only, misinterpreted but also sidelined for the minor white characters, especially when Black people already struggle with attempting to get representation as a community in fandom spaces, let alone on the big screen. And for a movie like Sinners, which holds deep historical ties within the narrative, it makes it even worse to see.

much more the one in the background than the one up front, still at least he has the collar and the weapon we saw in the first trailer of things that never happen in the end (like so much else)

Apparently reblogs are off for the cool post about aliens that have a billion babies and wait to see which survive, and that's a pity, because @lillyjen had some great ideas that are worth sharing:
Makes me think of species that go to one specific place to breed, because the young need very different conditions than the adults. And the journey is often arduous & perilous, & the time you're able to spend there is very limited. And nowadays breeding isn't a death sentence (though it probably requires a recovery period), because they're intelligent enough to overcome most of the pitfalls, but since breeding requires those very specific conditions, as do the offspring prior to maturation, you still can't live there. There's monitoring equipment, nowadays. Plus a research station, of sorts. But the incompatible environment means there is very little adults can do to intervene (though they do try - the bulk of their resources are probably reserved for emergencies, though, since they're limited). I think a species with this kind of maturation cycle probably wouldn't have the same communication in juvenile & adult forms, too, so it would be like monitoring a wild animal population in more ways than one. Sort of "I am intelligent enough to recognise these creatures as my offspring" but also "we are entirely seperate species until they reach their first maturation". (Might also be a case of "one of our kids", i.e.: this is where x community goes to breed, therefore these are the kids that belong to those people. They get sorted into homes based on how many survive, & who has what resources. They're aware of genetics & direct descent, but it's just not something that really concerns them.) #most examples of this kind of breed em & leave em I can think of are marine based #reasons for inhospitality: #eggs need a certain temperature #adults die with prolonged exposure to that kind of heat #infants thrive in the heat #(no need for internal temperature regulation) #but once they reach a certain mass it becomes too hot#plus there's not enough food #OR #breeding season follows feeding season #which follows patterns of boom & bust #we lay our eggs in the barren places because we cannot afford to carry them with us #(& modern attempts to try have shown that the conditions are too variable & they die) #& there are no predators that will eat them in the barren places #unfortunately #that also means there's nothing for the offspring to eat once they've consumed their eggs #(probably some cannibalism on the way out of the barren places…) #we bury our eggs in the sacred grounds #(which science tells us has a specific blend of temperature & minerals that are absorbed through the soft shells #& is nigh impossible to recreate artificially) #& must wait for our offspring to return to us #since treading on the sacred ground defiles it #(risks disturbing it's delicate environment) #etc
This makes a lot of sense! I didn't think that there could be reasons for the adults to not stay in the area itself, aside from predators. But if the region itself is inhospitable -- or in danger of damage from the adults -- then that is an entirely valid reason to simply wait for the hatchlings to make their way out and join the rest of society.
I'll bet there are some very interesting social structures for how those self-sufficient feral children are welcomed into society, too.
